9 people you'd like to get to know better
This is my second super-unexpected-tag-game this week, is that considered a good or bad omen on this site? Anyway, thanks @andromedaholic, I'm extremely bored today and this is fun!
3 ships: the main ones are Bucky Barnes/Helmut Zemo (MCU), Corvo Attano/The Outsider (Dishonored), and James "Biggles" Bigglesworth/Erich von Stalhein (Biggles Series). I like many others, but that would be too long a list.
First ship: I'm pretty sure it was, and I have no idea if anyone knows these people even exist, William Lubber/Arabella Drummond from the book Pirateology: A Pirate Hunter's Companion by Dugald Steer. Just two people hunting each other with murderous intent... My tastes haven't changed much, by the way.
Last song: My Church by Aviators. I'm very normal about Aviators.
Last film: Clive Gordon's Cargo (2006). Don't watch it. I only did it for Daniel Brühl and to make gifsets for my friends :3
Currently reading: nothing, but I'm thinking about reading The Terror. The last book I read was The Alienist by Caleb Carr.
Currently craving: more than four hours of restful sleep.
Fav color: black.
Relationship status: single.
Last thing googled: plexiglass. Saw the word in a post and wanted to know what it was. It's called differently in my native language.
Current obsessions: Daniel Brühl (especially his role in The Alienist) and Dishonored (this obsession started many years ago, and it has never gone away, in fact it may never leave me at all).
Tagging (no pressure whatsoever): @six-demon-bag, @hiddenxplaces-blog, @takuventures, @ithilien-wolf, @winterbonesthings, @evilwinterfruit, @milarca, @cass-without-the-andra, @karnaca78

For the fic writer asks - 6, 18 and 26 please :D
6. What ship(s) captured your heart?
well as you WELL KNOW, friend of mine, this is the year i tumbled headfirst into biggles fandom. as a result i now have a Very Healthy attachment to james bigglesworth/erich von stalhein and a swiftly growing appreciation for algy lacey/ginger hebblethwaite. i also had my dalliance with the terror and goodsir/collins, as well as bridgens/peglar. OH AND WORRALS/FRECKS. truly this year has been a bountiful one
18. What was the hardest fic to title?
third time lucky! anyway i hated titling the pragmatic sex lichen fic because it was the moment i realised i had to think about it in the time between finishing writing and reveals. and i ended up with an okay title but not one with real pizazz
26. If you had to choose one, what was THE most satisfying writing moment of your year?
it's not been posted on ao3 but being honest: it has to be the cursed au i've been putting on dreamwidth, in which biggles & co are a very niche rpf fandom in present-day canonverse. it's my best idea ever and if i ever think of an actual plot to use in that context it will be my magnum opus, much as #strongpoison was my best work of 2023

far worse things awaiting man — 3900 words, james bigglesworth & erich von stalhein, gen. vampire triplane bat monster erich von stalhein survives.
Surely the Baron, at least, still flew—and yet from where von Stalhein stood he might have been the last, the rest of Germany’s aces wasted on this single catastrophic assault.
In which Biggles shows up aboard the Attila, and Erich von Stalhein chooses his enemy over his commander. (A rewrite of Chapter 43 of The Bloody Red Baron.)

tag game: answer these questions, then tag 9 people you want to get to know better
Thank you to @monkiedude for tagging me! I had to learn how to tag other Tumblr users recently so I can relate lol
3 ships:
Steve Rogers/Tony Stark (MCU): Enemies-to-lovers, opposites attract, what's not to like? I was all in on this ship from 2012 to 2019 (when Endgame torpedoed everything goddamnit), and to this day I still have the most fic bookmarks for this ship.
Superman/Batman (DCEU): I got into the enemies-to-lovers Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice version in 2019 when I was mourning MCU. The scene when Bruce has a nightmare about being chained up at Superman's mercy...these are what EtL dreams are made of >:)
Rodney McKay/John Sheppard (SGA): McShep was one of my great fandom loves of the 2000s, and I genuinely believed they were canonically in love. The sci-fi setting allowed for so much creativity, and the fic writers took full advantage. Also, McKay is one of the few characters I've ever shipped who was Canadian, so I have a special fondness for him <3
First ship: Draco/Ginny, because I liked the visual contrast and the EtL vibe (my tastes have remained consistent lol)
Last movie: Glass Onion! It wasn't quite as clever as Knives Out, but I had a terrific time.
Last song: Lotus Rain by Adio.
Currently reading: Role of a Lifetime, in the Biggles fandom featuring the book series by W.E. Johns. The titular protagonist goes undercover as the antagonist in order to uncover a sinister plot, but then the real antagonist shows up! Thoroughly delightful. For anyone who's used to reading fandom-blind, all you need to know is that James "Biggles" Bigglesworth is a British aviator during WWI with an honourable enemy in Prussian aristocrat Erich von Stalhein. They initially meet when Biggles is undercover as a British defector to Germany during WWI, and so starts a cat-and-mouse game where Von Stalhein suspects Biggles and tries to expose him.
Currently watching: Wednesday. I haven't seen the original Addams Family movie, but the gifs of Wednesday dancing won me over!
Currently consuming: Blueberries. I'm trying to eat at least 5 servings of fruit/veg a day.
Currently craving: Tikka masala.
Tagging @sereshaws, @aortaargent, @qin-ling, @sholiofic, @marsupialcore, @storiesforsorries & whoever else feels like it!

AI, space and augmentation: the future according to a serial tech investor
For the aeronautical designer, business visionary, worldwide explorer, and Virgin Galactic future space traveler Julian Ranger, that book series was William Earl Johns' Biggles series.
There were almost 100 Biggles volumes distributed somewhere in the range of 1932 and 1999 portraying the endeavors of pilot and globe-trotter James Bigglesworth. The narratives were composed as Boy's Own experiences praising the British upsides of courage, impressive skill, and sophistication.
For Ranger, Biggles' experiences as a pilot in the Royal Air Force roused his three dreams: to work with planes, to venture to the far corners of the planet, and… all things considered, we'll get to that.
Addressing Verdict, he made sense of: "I cherished airplane so I needed to work in flying so I did a degree in aeronautical designing. I've contacted a portion of the world's quickest flies. I've done Tornado, and Eurofighter, and JSF, and Air15, large planes and little planes, and air traffic the executives."
Officer started out chipping away at the Tornado F3 contender, however it wasn't well before he was accused of incorporating an early form of the tactical web on the airplane. He guarantees that this was an especially fortunate case of being perfectly located with flawless timing:
"I turned into a world master in information and systems administration and all the other things in the tactical when there were not many other world specialists. At the point when you're fortunate, you're fortunate; and you must be a piece fortunate. However at that point you need to benefit from your karma."
By the age of 23, Ranger was at that point a world-master on the frameworks and on the ball. He before long understood that he had accepted it to the extent that he could in the military. Abandoning the job, he established Stasys, an innovation and counseling firm gaining practical experience in network correspondences and safeguard interoperability.
In 2005, Lockheed Martin — the world's greatest safeguard organization — made Ranger a proposition he was unable to afford to ignore. The business person sold Stasys for an undisclosed total and he remained on as Lockheed Martin's VP of worldwide procedure.
By 2007, Ranger decided to resign late in life of 44.
It was then that he accomplished his subsequent desire: to venture to the far corners of the planet. He and his little girl endured two years voyaging and had "an impact", as indicated by Ranger.
Subsequent to getting back to the UK, Ranger became exhausted and looked for another test. He established Digi.me, another organization pointed toward permitting clients to have more command over their own information. He likewise kept putting resources into new tech organizations.
Notwithstanding, Ranger's definitive life desire actually lies in front of him.
New skylines "The creator of Biggles likewise thought of some less great space stories," Ranger advises Verdict when we plunk down to talk about his most recent undertakings. "However, that got me into Isaac Asimov and all the other things. So I needed to go to space."
That fantasy was stirred up by the moon arrivals, which Ranger saw as they were first communicated when he was six years of age.
"We as a whole imagined that everybody would be in space. So on the off chance that you'd say I could be perhaps the earliest thousand human in space, I'd have said 'sign me up'," he adds.
In any case, it's a desire that is far from simple or easy. Initially Ranger wanted to join to be a space tourism case study as a young person. Tragically, an especially terrible mishap at 18 forestalled that. All things considered, he thinks he would likely have bombed at any rate, as everybody needed to go into space.
However, nearly when he sold his business in 2007, along came Richard Branson and his scandalous Virgin Galactic venture. He reviews:
"Branson goes along and says he will take individuals to space for $200,000 dollars. At the time it was $2.04 to the pound. So that is under £100,000. I had the cash, I'd quite recently sold my business, so I needed to purchase a pass to space. That was in 2007. We're here in 2018, I'm as yet not going to go up until the back finish of the following year or mid 2020. Simply over 100th in line."

The books that made me
The books that made me
Once I had overcome my problems with reading at school, see it’s probably the way I’m wired; I read whatever I could get my hands on. As a young girl, I was drawn more to action and adventure and a sense of ‘derring-do.’ So, the stories and books that caught my imagination included: Biggles – a series of books written about the flying ace James Bigglesworth and his adventures flying in the…

In the 'Biggles' books by W. E. Johns, which of Biggles' friends has the surname Hebblethwaite?
'Biggles' is a series of children's adventure books written by W. E. Johns. The series contains around 100 books about James Bigglesworth "Biggles", a pilot and adventurer. Biggles first appeared in 'The White Fokker', published in the first issue of 'Popular Flying' magazine in 1932. Later that year, a selection of stories were published in a book called 'The Camels are Coming'.
Ginger Hebblethwaite, a teenage runaway, first appeared in 'The Black Peril' (1935). His real first name was never revealed but Biggles immediately nicknamed him "Ginger" because of his red hair. Ginger had run away from home because he wanted to become a pilot.
Biggles lied about his age to serve as a fighter pilot in the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) during the First World War when he was only 16. Since the war, Biggles occasionally completed secret missions, often accompanied by his cousin Algernon ('Algy') Lacey and his mechanic, Flight Sergeant Smyth.
Ginger joined Biggles on his adventures and proved his worth by rescuing the pilot from some enemy agents. After this, Ginger became one of the regular team and was often Biggles's chosen companion. He also became a talented mechanic.
William Earl Johns (1893-1968) was an English First World War pilot, who wrote the 'Biggles' adventure stories under the pen name Capt. W. E. Johns. Some of the stories were loosely based on his experiences as a pilot.

18. What was the hardest fic to title?
they're all always horrible to title but shifting into biggles fandom this year meant my usual mainstay (wordy mountain goats lyrics) felt wrong and so i've started... shudder... Making Up Titles Properly. hardest was probably covert operation, because i wanted SO BADLY to name it after a transgender dysphoria blues lyric but i also wanted it to have cross-appeal with the biggles forumites so 'they just see a faggot' might have ruffled some feathers
20. Share your favorite ending line
my Favourite favourite ending line is (alas!) from one of my yuletide fics, but of ones which are available under my name:
Biggles smiled wider. “True enough.” He put out a hand ready to shake. “James Bigglesworth. You can call me Biggles, if you like.” “I won’t,” said von Stalhein, automatically. Then he caught himself, and took Biggles’ hand.
it's from down on the cards, which i loved writing and was my first attempt at the algy vs evs situation, a perennial favourite.
21. Share your favorite piece of dialogue
this one is long, but: i love writing dialogue, and one of my favourite pieces is from my second the terror fic, in which goodsir is having a not-good time at all.
“Sorry,” said Harry. “I – didn’t mean to.”
A child’s excuse. Harry wanted quite badly to do something equally childish to avoid himself; hide under a blanket or in a cupboard, perhaps, knees to his chest.
John looked at him. Harry tried hard not to squirm like a schoolboy about to be thrashed.
“I know, Harry,” John said, eventually. “I came to find you to ask about your morning, actually. Not to send you into a fit of hysteria.”
“I’m not hysterical,” said Harry. “Leaving aside the strict diagnostic criteria, the etymology alone–”
“I was being facetious,” John replied. He sighed, running a hand through his hair. He’d taken after their mother, hair straight and fine. “Doctor Litefoot sent a telegram. He was not pleased to have his assistant surgeon vanish halfway through an autopsy, let alone one I’d told him would be of great diagnostic help.”
Harry couldn’t speak for a moment. His chest felt tight. “Then I apologise for disappointing you, and him. I thought I would be able to – tolerate it.”
“But not enjoy it,” said John. He looked oddly sad, his forehead creased in a frown. Harry wasn’t sure why.
“Was I supposed to?” He remembered feeling excited about autopsies in the past; his anatomical studies had interested him at the time, of course. He didn’t see how it was relevant.
“You used to enthuse about this,” John replied. “Could hardly keep you away from the museum, or the lecture theatre. Always hearing about some new advancement in surgical practice. And now – Harry, you knew you didn’t have to do this, didn’t you?”
“Of course I did,” said Harry, automatically. “I have to do what you tell me, or–” He stopped.
“Or what, Harry?” John’s voice was gentle; it scraped against Harry’s nerves.
Harry said nothing. He set down the rag and went to the sitting room, where John’s pet tortoise was busily eating half a head of cabbage. The cat, an ageing Persian that Harry had helped nurse as a kitten, padded over and pawed at his leg until he sat on the chaise longue and lifted her onto his lap.
She purred happily as he scratched her behind the ears. She was warm and soft and very content to curl up and doze.
John came to stand in the doorway. Harry glanced up at him, words drying in his throat.
“I don’t know what happened, that you’re so frightened of us,” said John. “I wish I did.”
“If you did, you’d wish you didn’t,” Harry said, softly. “I’m quite sure of that.”

I've been watching old Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads, and in one episode Bob (who's definitely Carl, even though he looks so much like Pete) admits to having wanted to be Biggles. Made me wonder if that's anything to do with Carl getting the nickname - do we know?
Hey there! Oh cool, I missed that! It’s a good theory. To my knowledge we don’t know the origin story of the nickname, though it’s been assumed it referrs to the pilot James Bigglesworth, nicknamed Biggles, from the series of children’s books. I assume the movie refers to one and the same? May well have been where the idea came from, if it wasn’t simply from the books. x
