Did someone notice in the new Somerton's video that he didn't adress any of the misogyny or transphobia accusations? Like, yeah, he said "people say I hate women but that's not true" and only that. And he also addressed the misinformation, in which we can include the misgendering, but he still didn'h fully talk about this even when those accusations were, along with plagiarism, the most talked about on the internet.
This dude didn't give any reason for why "he doesn't hate" women or trans people, it truly was a "source: dude trust me" and Somerton expects us to believe him, when no, he threw shit on women in every chance he got, he showed transphobia in many times for no fucking reason other than he's got something against women and trans people.
And he also didn't address any of the racism people has pointed out since a long time, but more specially since HBomberguy and Todd's video. This dude only focused on plagiarism, and even that he sucked at since he implied it was an accident. How can you plagiarize on accident?, you have to write, to read, to check what you're doing, he read and Nick's scripts, he must have noticed the copying and still left it with no citation. He said he loves investigating and reading, then he must notice the copying, yet he also said he "didn't notice", like this dude can't recognize he did this on purpose, it was all "an accident".
Also, he just tried shifting the blame, placing it on Nick or, again, like it was an accident and he didn't mean to it. Somerton knew what he was doing, all of us are taught at school, specially college, that plagiarism not only is bad, it it diminishes the quality and credibility of the person that stole those words, it can get you expelled or fired, and let's not forget the people you're hurting by stealing from them, and this case the people whose experiences and words were stolen. Somerton is in a more privileged position than many people in the LGBTQ+ community since he's a cis white man, and yet he decided to attack this way many POC and trans people, not only he stole their words, but he also used racist and transphobic rhetoric, he misgendered, he erased sexualities and put all of us on the same box of "cis straight white women".
"I wanted to make my channel a safe space", yeah, sure man, like saying all the negative things of an MLM media is straight cis women's fault, or misgendering, erasing the bisexuality of a woman or changing "trans" for "queer" is going to make to make your channel a safe for queer women and trans people.
I just deep down know he won't change at all, maybe except for the citations, but we must expect he'll continue being a misogynist racist transphobe dumbass that will keep ignoring this accusations and using the homophobia card.
I really feel sorry if he truly felt so bad he harmed himself and ended up on an hospital, if that's real I hope he gets better and never gets to that point again. Maybe I'm naive, but I want to believe this is not a tactic to manipulate us to forgive him, but... idk, I just expect anything from this man that has used the homophobia card to protect his ass from any criticism.
But talking by myself, as a genderfluid AFAB person who consumes and creates queer content and felt so insulted by his racism, his misogyny and transphobia, and noticing how he avoided the topic, I don't accept his apology and hope he disappears from the internet before he can do any more damage.

Oh, golly! A known youtuber was recently exposed for plagiarism also turns out to be an extreme misogynist?? Who could've noticed such a thing!
It's not like in multiple videos he went on rants about how female authors are big bads for writing about MLM couples and female fans are big bads for daring to enjoy those ships.
In his Killing Stalking video, he attacked women for enjoying the manga and (it's been a long time since I watched that video, and considering that he nuked everything, it's not like I can go back, but I'm pretty sure that he said that) we are raised with the belief that the abusive relationships between two gay men are ok to fetishize while we'd never read the same thing between a man and a woman (not only this is stupid and untrue, but notice how a third kind of couple is missing, here. Wonder why.)
Later on, he talked shit about the author of Love, Simon, forcing her to come out, then proceeded to keep addressing her as a "straight" woman, and whined that the book/movie erased the characters of any kind of sexuality despite the women wanting to see gay men do the nasty.
Later, later on, he rambled about Red, White, and Royal Blue, and this time he complained about that the evil women who fetishize gay men were against genuine displays of sex acts between two gay men (???).
For years, he blabbed about how women are the true enemy of gay-men-focused medias, and even then he couldn't keep his story straight (do we like to see these gay men fuck or not?? James, which one is it??).
Not to mention the fantastic take of "Queer women had it easier throughout history," because that's such a punch in the chest that we can't ignore it.
Guys, this shit was always in plain sight. He never tried to hide it, there was no need for a bald bisexual man to make us notice it. We gotta stop turning our faces to blatant misogyny simply because it's being expressed by a gay man.
--
Yuuuup.
I'm genuinely sorry for the people who didn't spot it, but I am not sympathetic. Somerton was not even a little bit subtle. He was a toxic, rancid piece of shit for many, many years.
Also, even the plagiarism accusations are years old. People just didn't listen because nobody youtube-famous had made a big video about them.

I am beating a dead horse I know. but I thought of something else about James Somerton.
Because it recently came to my attention that, right around when the video that destroyed his career came out, Somerton had been fishing for Neil Gaiman to like his Good Omens video.
Now, this in an of itself is nothing weird. youtubers fish for people to share their stuff all the time, sometimes it is reasonable, other times it is rude. and other times is like "Please dont force creators to interact with you". but it is nothing weird or uncommon for what is Youtubers.
Neil Gaiman being associated with Queer content is also nothing weird. The guy was the "Thor god of Lesbians" before Thor was a thing. He is such an ally there is a whole section of the community ready to explain to people the context of Wanda in the Sandman comic. So Somerton trying (excuse the expression) "to get Gaiman-Senpai to notice him" (Yes, go ahead shoot me i deserve it) is also not weird.
but I cant help but see it as part of a certain pattern.
Because we all saw the video, and how Hbomberguy points out the inherent misogyny in a lot of Somerton's views and how he erase people's gender and orientation in order to shit on women (and how that also ties him to transphobia, biphobia, and a lot of other things). And also how he will dismiss criticisms by claiming it is white straight women harassing him.
Except between that video and Todd in the shadows, I did find one particular instance of him talking positively of a woman. Jo Rowling. A Cis Straight Woman who nowadays is defined by the transphobia she constantly tries to rules-lawyer deny she ever expressed.
Obviously, the video wasnt about him Defending Rowling, but it was a weird video in which he tried to claim Rowling was more progressive than she actually was, at one point even claiming when the books were written she was pro-trans folk. Which is a lie. There was this need of him trying to sell Rowling as this tragic figure, this person who changed for the worse. And this was from the guy who was quick to dismiss the intentions of any woman or GNC person.
And then I remembered his weird claims about Bob Iger. This... honestly revisionism of the fight of Gay Marriage (the thing he also dismisses in importance in a different video) as Iger pressuring Obama into making it law among other things that tried to elevate Iger, a Cis Straight Man, into an important role in queer history.
And then there is the "Stupid Sexy Nazi" stuff I wont even go into detail.
My point is, there was this weird trend in his videos that I noticed. That he would rather elevate straight and their participation in queer history at the same time he dismissed plenty of non-cis gay men. Sometimes even doing revisionism to describe a version of history that did not happen, but which weirdly feels like the version of history he would want.
And again, Neil Gaiman is an ally and there is nothing weird in and of itself for him to want Gaiman to like his stuff. But when taken into context with everything else, both his antagonism with actual queer people, and his elevation of non-queer people, I feel that says something.

when i first watched somerton the first videos i watched we’re fine, i never found him super engaging, i always found his presentation to be very monotone (as if he was reading an article for the first time perhaps) but he definitely had some good one liners (…now we know why) but the thing that made me stop watching him was truly the misogyny?
it didn’t fully occur to me at the time, and obviously the h bomb video put many many things about somerton’s work in perspective, but yeah can we please talk about how this white gay man just always had some shit to say about women? like yeah he’d say white woken or whatever, maybe sometime even call them straight! but idk he just always gave the vibes of “Chelsea didn’t invite me to her sweet 16 because i told her her party dress made her look fat, she was only ever friends with me because i was her gay BFF anyway she just wants a cry-on” to “i don’t talk to women anymore, us men are only here to talk about the classics” to finally “i’m a gay white man on grindr who has no POC in their bio”
i know the entire discussion about this basically just culminates into the “ you gay bc you like men in gay bc i hate women, we are not the same” meme but truly fucking awful that someone can be see as a PROMINENT lgbtq+ voice that was seen primarily by younger people/people generally less educated on the topics of lgbtq history

i've kinda been rotating the whole james somerton situation around in my head all day because i really liked his content and, like i said, i am super disappointed but i'd like to point out one point about the misogny that i noticed in some of his vidoes that i kinda ignored because i liked the rest but i think it's weird to call all women who shil mlm ships "straight white women fetishizing gay men" because queer women exist... Also, unfortunately because in a lot of pieces of media there are more well developed male characters than female characters so obviously mlm ships will end up being more popular if the characters already had more interesting dynamics...
I'm not saying it's not a thing at all or that queer women can't be guilty of this as well but it did kind of rub me the wrong way to be this one sided about it... Mainly because a big part of my Instagram bubble is queer bookstagram where Heartstopper and RWRB are really popolar but there are also a lot of really popular sapphic books (sometimes even by the same authors). it's just really weird to frame it like there are a lot of people framing the Heartstopper fandom as a whole as toxic straight women because a lot of people in the fandom are queer and can relate a lot to the characters even thought there experiences isn't the exact same... (i relate a lot to Nick's journey with his bisexuality and i really didn't expext the comic to resonate so much with me when i started it i was just curious what the hype was about and i already liked radio silence)
i guess i'm just frustrated about dismissing the experiences of queer women and non-binary people when you also talk about queer erasure in your videos (AND PLAGERIZE WORK ABOUT QUEER ERASURE??? DID HE NOT SEE HOW MESSED UP THIS WAS????)
