The difficulty is that while The Tudors still downplays Henry's intellect and talent, it regularly displays his cruelty, not only on climactic occasions like the executions of Fisher, More, Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard or the burning of heretics, but also as a routine aspect of his day-to-day relationships with others, in his profoundly abusive, exploitative, and misogynist[ic] relationships with his wives and mistresses, and in his unmitigated narcissism. If possible, the series makes Meyers' Henry [...] worse than the real king.

#i mean...i sort of agree #i default to this being my favorite merely because it is the only full-length series that truly centers on him #but the moments of vulnerability are few and far between #and for them to be so rare makes when they're misplaced (henry fitzroy dying at five...my kingdom for an onscreen teenage fitzroy!) feel #even more egregious...it's a lot that That All happened in 1536 but that IS what happened . in succession . #i do wonder if henry is ever going to get his cromwell moment #those vulnerable moments depicted i mean #mantel popularized what was missed about him in the picture of his brutality... his 'dearly beloved wife' #losing her and two of his daughter to the sweating sickness in either 1528/9 #anyway tl; dr this is a very good critical review #i might post more quotes later #it details what tudors got right vs wrong #but i would still say it is a very good primer on the period #there is none more detailed or better #there is none with such accurate detail even if the details aren't 100% so #there's probably smth to be said for this era of television being the sopranos #or...i think the sopranos and the tudors are to this date the top rated showtimes series #*the sopranos' heyday #but i also like it as a time capsule; it's very instructive of the pop culture died in 2009 of it all
