Reread Monstrous Regiment last week & got hit with gender feels again. Rereading Wee Free Men right now and am going to cry from nostalgia bc its audiobook on long car drives was my intro to Pratchett & the Disc growing up

We Will Not Do That also we're not+ #planning on dating or crushes any time soon anyway #and the MC eventually mentions she googled and saw something called the ace spectrum but she doesn't know anyone irl like that #and her friend is like sounds legit also we love you the way you are no matter what - and then it doesn't really come up after that #(which makes sense for 12yos though I think it could have been more narratively concluded) #a bit that made me laugh was when a magic person is talking about bad things that happen in the waking world and she's like: #what; like.........atrocities? #you know. ive been trying to figure out the anja/lilith divide because its so strange and i think its mostly just to signify that isa's mom never actually receives a concrete personal appearance or name and that everything we see is purely isa's own internalizations of things which are never depicted or even overtly described

#because the only two characters who like Are Real are isa and erika and both those are actual japanese names #which by coincidence are also german names #and every other character is given a german first name despite every character being associated with the sinosphere #which seems to serve to indicate distance and alienation from the Real #and the literal in universe replication of isa's mother is all but thrown away containing only a single appearance in a note #in which she instructs you how to get into the book shop #vs lilith being an incredibly obviously unrealistic name for someone to actually have by birth due to its connotations #and alongside the fact that alina is already a semi mythical invented character within isa's own head #likely from a picture of someone she saw with her mother without ever learning her actual name

Reflection of Happy Hour by Marlowe Granados ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is like Broad City in a book.

It’s such a good slice of life of a 20something living(struggling) in the big city

If you’re looking for a plot this isn’t the book but what is so great about it is how Marlowe describes the things , like things that you’ve felt but never put words to it (see fav quotations section)

Notes I took down while reading

- It’s like stream of consciousness but witty and similar to mine and my friends (so maybe it’s just the brain of a 20 something)

- “I wonder what I’ve done in life to be subjected to Alice Langley (bankrolled by her mother) telling me to grow up. What hypocrisy.”(100)

- Broad City if one of the friends was a bitch ,

- Wait she’s turning around

- actually nope

- But the chapters with Coop were definitely white lotus vibes

- Favorite chapter: August 6 (moms, grief)

- she never says “I feel like…” it’s always matter of fact

- This book reminds me of the song Rave Angel by Blusher

- SPOILER! it would’ve gotten 5 stars if the ending wasn’t hinting at the book being her released diary🤦‍♀️

i saw your tags about ir*n w*dow and im ngl i've had it on my to-read list for aggeeess but i havent actually picked it up.. all everyone seems to do is rave about it but the plot does not sound like it jumps out at me tbh... kinda wanna see what everyone is raving about but i dont wanna waste my time if i don't like it :/

i'm always pro trying stuff out for yourself, so maybe borrow the book from a friend or the library and just see if it appeals to you!!

personally i have to say that i thought it was a very immature book, from the shallow characterisation, to the clunky writing, extremely vague worldbuilding, and shaky plot. it was definitely rushed due to the online success of the author, it didn't feel nearly polished enough to be published.

i could forgive honestly a lot of these gripes (as much of it is down to my personal taste), HOWEVER. i absolutely cannot forgive that it is marketed as a feminist book when the main character hates every single woman they interact with, and apart from the main character there really are not ANY important characters that are women. it is an angry book for sure, but it is not an "angry feminist" book as so many people say.
