Nara is a special ink used in Irezumi tattoos. The word, “Irizumi” means to insert ink in Japanese. In Japan, tattooing has had its own distinct style created over centuries. It is a painful and time consuming process, done by a limited number of specialists. The Lady of Nara hails its inspiration from Yayoi Kusama’s usage of dots and stippled value. In the following Yayoi Period (c. 300 BC–300 AD) tattoo designs were observed and remarked upon by Chinese visitors. Such designs were thought to have spiritual significance as well as functioning as a status symbol. In this piece, I wanted to draw connections to Yayoi’s heritage while stippling dots for love and piece in the representation of a woman. The woman shown has sunken, deep, startling, elongated eyes. The The Lady of Nara clearly depicts a woman set in the 1920′s, the era of the Flapper, a time when girls could revolt- at least in the evenings. Makeup played a vital role in helping women recover from the horrors of war. Women were now able to assert their new sense of feminine power. Kusama was a woman born in 1929, so I wanted to give an example of women empowerment in this time period.
