i AGREE! world building is amazing. anyways whats up with Arson Lawrence?
Sorry for not seeing this until now!
So! Arson (they/them) is a cursed flavor of shapeshifter where they can turn into beasts, but like, instead of a magical transformation it’s like. Horrific. Bones breaking and stuff and it generally hurts.
They also have an ability to channel magic over long distances very well, so for the first portion of their career, they were making a living acting as essentially an extension cord for people that are drawing magic from more powerful entities, because sometimes a patron wants their warlock to go do something but said patron can’t reach that far.
Through this line of work, they met Geryon Amnes, a generally shitty dude who was at the time a fairly big villain (he still sort of is but his title and command has been passed on by now), who gets all his magic from outside forces. And Gery has a temper and a bad habit of setting people on fire. So Arson was in some shit, and a local demon ‘took care of them’ for him, because said demon wasn’t exactly a stranger to murder, although his adopted kids had given him a change of heart by this point.
So Arson has to lean into faking their death or this villain is gonna throw a whole fit. So they go to a friend for help, and the fact that said friend is Aljena Cole, the right hand woman to the villain in question, is mostly a coincidence. They bond over the time it takes for Arson to settle into a new life, and they’re pretty good friends by the time Geryon gets murdered (twice) and Aljena takes over as Noren, at which point, she promotes Arson to second in command.
Aljena is trying to take the power of this villain role and kind of make other villains generally less shitty, and Arson is more than happy to let out a bit of pent up rage. They’re tired of being nice, and they want to go apeshit. They realize they’re nonbinary a little before Aljena takes over as Noren, so they find their new name in a joke about suggesting they just burn everything to the ground. Also they set several houses on fire, but they’re the houses of other villains, so it’s fine. Probably.
They are very loyal to Aljena, and at this point, she’s their main moral compass. They’re spending most of their time with generally evil people, so they don’t super mind where they sink their teeth, as long as it helps. …also sometimes there’s a bit of personal motivation behind it, but… the end result is the same.
