Internship, Weeks 1 and 2: Orientation Part 1
Hi guys! So in my previous post, I’ve talk about the first 2 weeks of the internship, now here’s week 1!
Pre-internship:
Before starting internship, I of course have to do pre-internship stuff. That means filling out form after form and submitting the resume and resume cover letter. After I was accepted, I need to fill out more forms before the company contacted me about the first week. Believe me, this over with, let’s move on to week 1.
Week 1, days 1-4:
Hopping onto the shuttle bus that leads to the company (I’ll call it ICom since that is much simpler to type) and once it arrived at the bus stop (there are 3 inside the premises by the way but I alighted at the 2nd just to let you know) and head over to the training room at one of the wafer fabrication centres (there are 5 of them). Despite being surrounded by a variety of new employees ranging from China to India and even Spain, I was not daunted by the sheer number of new people because all I wanted to do was to get the orientation out of the way.
For the next 4 days, I was put into a series of talks about everything, even those unrelated to my profession. I am taking up an accountancy course and here I am listening to stuff about cleanroom protocol, safety (in the cleanroom that is) as well as anything unrelated to accounting. Regardless, I move on and in all honesty, I really enjoyed interacting with new people and bosses.
Lunch was provided for days 1 and 2 and for days 3 and 4 we went to different fabs to eat. There are a wide variety of food available including my personal favourite, zha jiang mian from the fab I was assigned with. Overall, it was on par with the food I had at middle school but with larger portions and slightly higher prices.
Towards the end of day 4, we were given the tour of one of the various cleanrooms around the facility. While it was a fun and enlightening tour, the problem is that I have difficulty wearing the smock and booties that I was given. The smock was of different colour (I was wearing dark blue while the rest wore the standard white) and the booties given was too big. Nonetheless, while my mind was swimming with those discomforts, I ignored those thoughts as this is my one and only chance of visiting the cleanroom to discover how the wafer chips were made. After all,I still need to know the inner workings of the company’s specialty.
With orientation done, it’s time to move on to work! As this is a rather long one, I will post part 2 tomorrow. Have a great day and to the Irish, happy St Patrick’s Day and I’ll see you next time. K thanks bye!
