I got so into the joy of Boops I didn't even check my mail and almost MISSED this Important Announcement yesterday!! Article under cut in case they take it down:
The producer of Willy’s Chocolate Experience has announced that the Roald Dahl rip-off will transfer to Broadway, with an opening-night performance slated for April 25 at 11pm — just in time for Tony Awards consideration.
The interactive show made international headlines in February when it played a warehouse in Glasgow. Lured by AI-generated images of a fantastical candy wonderland, Scottish ticket-buyers plunked down £35 each to enter the workshop of “Willy McDuff,” a whimsical chocolatier assisted by green-haired “Wonkidoodles” and haunted by “The Unknown,” a rival candy-maker who inhabits the walls of the factory.
Derided as “Willy Wonka’s Meth Lab,” the immersive production fell far short of the expectations set by marketing material, with actors struggling to bring coherence to a script that was obviously authored by ChatGPT, on a set that looked like a daycare on Riker’s Island. An audience revolt prematurely ended the run, with several ticket-buyers demanding refunds from the event’s visibly frazzled organizer.
“We learned so much from our out-of-town tryout,” the upbeat producer told TheaterMania, reframing the whole thing as a brilliant publicity stunt.
“I’ve been closely collaborating with our script doctor, Goog LeGemini, and I think we’ve solved the major problem of The Unknown being too…unknown. She is now an unhoused victim of Willy’s gentrification, a socially relevant backstory that I think makes for a much richer narrative. That was all the Glasgow run was missing, really.”
TheaterMania can exclusively reveal that Willy’s Chocolate Experience will play the defunct McDonald’s on 42nd Street next to the New Amsterdam Theatre. “It’s a perfect opportunity to snag tourists unable to get into Aladdin,” the producer enthused. “They might feel a little disappointed at first, but just wait until they get a load of our show.”
While the shuttered 42nd Street McDonald’s has not previously been considered a Broadway house, our investigations revealed that a certain former Broadway League president quietly elevated the venue on February 15 through an obscure administrative procedure that has gone unnoticed by the theatrical press until now.
“Between Here Lies Love and the revival of Cabaret, it’s clear that producers are seeking more versatile venues,” said the ex-prez when reached for comment, “and I can think of no better space for immersive shows than this hamburger palace with a theatrical marquee. You’re welcome, Broadway.”
Readers interested in a deeper dive should return to TheaterMania on Friday, when our desperate Story of the Week columnist will have banged out 2,000 words about why this is happening and how it will have absolutely no impact on this year’s Tony Awards.
Until then, we wish you a very happy April Fools’ Day.

AUDREY HEPBURN
Audrey Kathleen Hepburn (née Ruston; 4 May 1929 – 20 January 1993) was a British actress. Recognized as a film and fashion icon, she was ranked by the American Film Institute as the third-greatest female screen legend from the Classical Hollywood cinema and was inducted into the International Best Dressed Hall of Fame List.
Born into an aristocratic family in Ixelles, Brussels, Hepburn spent parts of her childhood in Belgium, England and the Netherlands. She attended boarding school in Kent, England from 1936 to 1939. With the outbreak of World War II, she returned to the Netherlands. During the war, Hepburn studied ballet at the Arnhem Conservatory and by 1944, she performed ballet to raise money to support the Dutch resistance. Hepburn studied ballet with Sonia Gaskell in Amsterdam beginning in 1945 and with Marie Rambert in London from 1948. She began performing as a chorus girl in West End musical theatre productions and then had minor appearances in several films. Hepburn rose to stardom in the romantic comedy Roman Holiday (1953) alongside Gregory Peck, for which she was the first actress to win an Oscar, a Golden Globe Award, and a BAFTA Award for a single performance. That year, she also won a Tony Award for Best Lead Actress in a Play for her performance in Ondine.
Hepburn went on to star in a number of successful films such as Sabrina (1954), in which Humphrey Bogart and William Holden compete for her affection; Funny Face (1957), a musical in which she sang her own parts; the drama The Nun's Story (1959); the romantic comedy Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961); the thriller-romance Charade (1963), opposite Cary Grant; and the musical My Fair Lady (1964). In 1967, she starred in the thriller Wait Until Dark, receiving Academy Award, Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations. After that, Hepburn only occasionally appeared in films, one being Robin and Marian (1976) with Sean Connery. Her last recorded performances were in the 1990 documentary television series Gardens of the World with Audrey Hepburn, for which she won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement – Informational Programming. In 1994, Hepburn's contributions to a spoken-word recording titled Audrey Hepburn's Enchanted Tales earned her a posthumous Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album for Children. She stands as one of few entertainers who have won Academy, Emmy, Grammy and Tony Awards.
Hepburn won three BAFTA Awards for Best British Actress in a Leading Role. In recognition of her film career, she received BAFTA's Lifetime Achievement Award, the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award, the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award and the Special Tony Award. Later in life, Hepburn devoted much of her time to UNICEF, to which she had contributed since 1954. Between 1988 and 1992, she worked in some of the poorest communities of Africa, South America and Asia. In December 1992, Hepburn received the US Presidential Medal of Freedom in recognition of her work as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. A month later, she died of appendiceal cancer at her home in Tolochenaz, Vaud, Switzerland at the age of 63

Dramatic Soprano Elisabeth Ohms was born on 17 May 1888 in Arnheim in The Netherlands. Her interest in music was evident at an early age, when she began studying violin and piano playing. She did not turn to singing until she was 28, getting her training at the conservatory in Amsterdam and in Frankfurt am Main. Her first engagement was at the Stadttheater in Mainz, but after just two years she joined the company of the Munich State Opera, where she remained for two decades. With Munich as a base, she went on extensive guest tours all over the world. One of her admirers was Arturo Toscanini, under whom she sang Kundry and Isolde in 1927 and 1929 at La Scala in Milan; another was Richard Strauss, who was especially enthusiastic about her Isolde. lt goes without saying that this fine Wagner soprano was heard in Bayreuth, too; Toscanini asked for her as Kundry when he conducted "Parsifal" for the first time there in 1931. Her appearances at the Metropolitan Opera in 1930 and 1931 were outstandingly successful. As an exception, she began with "Fidelio"; then came the Brünnhildes in the Ring, Ortrud and Venus, and finally, to crown her work there, Isolde. After these years of international successes, Elisabeth Ohm limited her sphere of activities to Munich, where she performed only rarely and ended her stage career in 1942. She then resided in Marquartstein, where she died on 16 October 1974. Gertrud Bindernagel was born on 11 January 1894 in Magdeburg. She studied at the conservatory in her home town and was only 17 when she was engaged by the local Stadttheater as a practical trainee. From 1913 to 1917 she continued her studies at the College of Music in Berlin. After finishing them she went to the opera house in Breslau, where she stayed until 1919. In 1919-20 she was with the Regensburg Stadttheater. From 1921 to 1927 she was a member of the company of the Berlin State Opera, where she scored enormous successes in a repertoire ranging from Nedda in "I pagliacci" to Isolde. From 1927 on, Gertrud Bindemagel was heard mainly at the Städtische Oper in Berlin; guest tours took her to Barcelona, Hamburg, Munich, Vienna and Mannheim. Following a performance of "Siegfried" at Berlin's Städtische Oper she was shot by her husband under the arcades of the opera hause. Domestic quarrels had led to the attack, from which she did not recover. She died of complications on 3 November 1932. Marta Fuchs, the celebrated high dramatic soprano of the 1930s and 40s, began her career as an alto in concerts. Born on 1 January 1898 in Stuttgart, she made her opera debut, after five years of concert work, at the Stadttheater in Aachen, still as an alto. Only in the course of her next engagement - with the Dresden State Opera beginning in 1930 - was her voice transformed into a high dramatic soprano. After 1935 she was also a member of the Berlin State Opera company and went on to become one of the most famous Wagner sopranos of the time. In 1933 she was already singing at the Bayreuth Festival, and until 1942 she was hailed by audiences there as Isolde, Kundry and especially Brünnhilde. In 1933 and 1935-37 she took part in Wagner performances in Amsterdam. In 1938 she sang Isolde at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees in Paris. In 1936 she was heard with the Dresden State Opera ensemble in London's Covent Garden as Donna Anna, the Marschallin in "Rosenkavalier", and Ariadne. In 1942 she was acclaimed at the Vienna State Opera. After 1945 Marta Fuchs lived in Stuttgart, giving only occasional guest performances and concerts. She died in Stuttgart on 22 September 1974. Anny Konetzni, bom on 12 February 1902 in Ungarisch-Weisskirchen, got her vocal training at the Vienna Conservatory, where her teacher was the renowned heroic tenor Erik Schmedes. Later she studied with Jacques Stückgold in Berlin. She began her singing career at the Vienna Volksoper (1925) with alto and mezzo roles, but the change to the big dramatic soprano parts was not long in coming.

“A Little Life” is ending.
That’s the question that has dominated this summer, after you watch Alcaraz beat Djokovic (a surprising number one) Luke Thompson as Willem and James Norton as Jude in ”A Little Life.” A non stop audiences walking to the West End’s hottest ticket 🎟️ it runs until August 5.

Hanya Yanagihara’s book, as conceived for the stage by Ivo van Hove and starring a lot of James Norton. The first is the emotionally hardcore, for whom nearly four hours of self-cutting and rape scenes is a feat to be endured. James Norton’s a star

Korean Film Industry
SOUTH KOREAN FILM INDUSTRY & TOP BEST KOREAN FILMS
One salient feature over the past decade has been the increasing success of Korean films on the screens, where they have proved capable of attracting new spectators - a phenomenon similar to that witnessed in some European countries, according to what emerged during MEDIA Salles' Focus on Europe event at Cinema Expo International 2002, in Amsterdam.
Considering all these points, the following two reflections on the Korean film industry, especially from the 90s up to the present, may be offered to European movie concerns.
Increasing market share of Korean movies
From 15.9% to 45.2% within 9 years, the Korean film market share increased..Until 1993, the Korean movie had a very small market share, because of its low quality, due to the limited budget for production and the lack of a well-developed system compared to the mighty Hollywood majors, which had been present on the Korean market since 1988. Accordingly, the market share of Korean movies had been steadily decreasing for the above mentioned period, finally dropping to 15% and threatening its very existence.
However, in 1999 the film Shiri brought a positive turning. It was the first Korean blockbuster movie, recording around 5 million spectators: it catapulted to the top of the South Korean box office and ended up toppling the record previously held by Titanic. This exceptional event was enough to initiate large-scale fund-raising and the creation of a production system by SEG (Samsung Entertainment Group). Shiri's success, representing the opportunity for the market share to soar to 39.7%, inspired many Korean film-makers and convinced them that Korean productions could be successful if they were based on a good financial support and a selected, quality background.
Subsequently other Korean movies, like Joint Security Area and Friend were of great impact in the Korean film market, so that in 2002 the market share settled at 45.2% in terms of admissions and at a higher 46.7% in terms of box office. It should be remembered that, at the end of the nineties, the number of foreign movies released in Korea was six times higher than for domestic movies.
Apart from the development of the Korean movie in itself, the spread of multiplexes, mainly belonging to the Orion Group and CJ, and the legislation on the "five-day working week" have tempted the Korean people to visit theatres more during their longer weekends. As a result the Korean film market has continued to expand by 17% to 18% each year and total audiences in 2002 amounted to over 100 million.
In addition, major distributors of Hollywood movies, such as Warner Brothers, MGM, and Dreamworks began to obtain the copyright for remakes of several movies that had been big hits on the Korean market. Fox, Walt Disney and other direct-distribution companies also started to take Korean movies on board their global distribution runs. Most recently, Columbia signed a contract on world distribution and investment with a local production company.

Artist Research - Martin Wong
Retrospective in the Stedelijk, Amsterdam.
Exhibition description: Wong’s multi-layered universe as seen through his early paintings, poems and sculptures made in the euphoric 1960s and early 1970s environments of San Francisco and Eureka, California, where he grew up as the only son of American-born Chinese parents; his iconic 1980s and 1990s paintings of a dilapidated New York City, made during his time on the Lower East Side; as well as his reminiscences on the imagery of the East and West Coast Chinatowns, made prior to his premature death from an HIV/AIDS-related illness.

wong's work presented to me a new perspective and intimate look at the counterculture movement of the 1960s. his work is visually easy to digest and pleasant to look at, there's a poignancy in the closed shop fronts he painted, marking a decline in inner city prosperity. his paintings don't shy away from the AIDS epidemic, by which he was heavily affected.
the 1960s movement was massive, creatively. it saw the emergence of Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters, the Beat generation like Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg and Neal Cassady (who drove the merry pranksters bus for a time), the Acid Tests, free jazz, festivals, blues and rock, Frisbee for some reason, Joni Mitchell, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, the Situationists International, Fluxus, Guy Debord, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, Michel Foucault, Janis Joplin, Richard Pryor, Andy Warhol and countless other visionaries that changed my outlook, and that of many others, on the world.
side note: so upset i didn't get to see nan goldin when i was at the stedelijk. time slots were sold out, i didn't even know the show was on 🥲

The Evens Arts Prize 2019
Tumblr media
The Evens Arts Prize 2019 was awarded to choreographer and artist Eszter Salamon. Composer Éliane Radigue received the Special Mention of the Jury.
The laureates were selected by an independent jury, who chose from a list of 45 internationally acclaimed artists, nominated by representatives of major European cultural institutions.
The Jury of the 2021 edition was composed of Cristina Grande, Head of the Performing Arts Department, Serralves Foundation, Porto; Andrea Lissoni, Senior Curator of International Art (Film), Tate Modern, London; Malgorzata Ludwisiak, Director, Ujazdowski Castle, Center for Contemporary Art, Warsaw; Frank Madlener, Director, IRCAM, Paris | Christophe Slagmuylder, Artistic Director, Wiener Festwochen, Vienna. The Jury Chair was Ernest Van Buynder, former Chairman, M KHA, Antwerp.
Curated by Anne Davidian for Evens Foundation.
The Laureate
The Jury has acknowledged Eszter Salamon’s ambitious and uncompromising work that explores contemporary issues touching upon what has been forgotten, excluded, and repressed in Western consciousness. The Jury has particularly valued the strong European resonance of her work and the way it articulates individual and collective experiences. Building on history to imagine a possible future, Salamon’s œuvre embodies an immaterial inheritance of gestures, movements, and dances to reaffirm art’s insight into the contemporary world.
Born in Budapest, Eszter Salamon lives and works between Berlin, Paris, and Brussels. Her work has been presented at Centre Pompidou, Avignon Festival, PACT Zollverein Essen, Ruhrtriennale, Holland Festival, The Kitchen New York, HAU Hebbel am Ufer Berlin, Berlin Documentary Forum, Kunstenfestivaldesarts Brussels, and Manchester International Festival, as well as in museums including MoMA, Witte de With, Serralves Foundation, Jeu de Paume, Akademie der Künste Berlin, and mumok Vienna.
The award ceremony and a discussion with Eszter Salamon took place on April 12, 2019, at the Akademie der Künste, Berlin, during the opening evening of the conference A Soul for Europe.
The Special Mention of the Jury
The Jury recognised and awarded with a special mention the unique path of French composer Éliane Radigue. One of the most innovative and important contemporary composers, she has been a major influence for generations of composers, musicians and artists alike. Exploring minimal rhythms and changes in different harmonies that unfold into intricate sonic webs, Radigue’s work has been deeply shaped by a constant interest and curiosity towards the world appealing for unique forms of introspection, empathy and attunement with the world.
Pioneer of electronic music, Éliane Radigue began a renewal of her creative process in 2002. Enriching her compositions with new timbres and resonances, she has been collaborating with acoustic instrument performers, for whom she composes without scores, according to the principle of oral and aural transmission.

In ANGELA (a strange loop), the latest creation by Susanne Kennedy & Markus Selg, a woman's life unfolds before our eyes in a space that constantly transforms, switching between real and virtual as we follow Angela through waking and sleeping, being born and giving birth, sickness and healing, ageing and dying. But what makes Angela Angela? With their metamodernistic aesthetic and multimedia approach, Susanne Kennedy and Markus Selg, delve into the fundamental inquiries of existence, identity, consciousness, and the nature of reality. Through their unique artistic lens, they provide a distinctive analysis that explores the experiences of the diseased rather than the healthy. By challenging societal norms and perceptions, they beckon us to question the very fabric of our existence, inviting contemplation of the intricate nuances of human experience and the interconnectedness of our shared realities.
