My name is Ro, though you may know me from my main blog (@jorisjurgen) and art blog (@atchamcrepin). On this blog I had posted random dissections of Dofus Aux Tresors episodes in a rewatch liveblog format, and now post about other Jurgen-Crepin related things.

My goal is to solve Crepin-Jurgen related lore.

Online/Offline [C.S] - ten | F, senpai

You sat, like every other time you streamed, in front of your computer with the room lights off, but a strip of soothing red LEDs on so you could still see your desk. You were a faceless streamer and could comfortably sit in the darkness since no one needed to see you. Your blue light blocking glasses rested on your nose as you set up the chat and everything else you needed for a hard night’s work of being silly on the internet.

“Oooookay. Can you hear me guys? One, two. One, two. Mic check, mic check. Sob in the mob with the Rob Bob Bob?”

A few people in the chat helpfully answered that your audio sounded too quiet. You adjusted it.

“How about that? Price check on prune juice, Bob. Price check on prune juice.”

Everyone started sending thumbs ups and happy faces, with a few saying “You’re good!”

“Thank you, kittens. I guess I have to do the intro, huh.” You took a breath and - as fast as you could - said: “Hey everyone it’s Jageun Geomeun Goyangi, JGG, the Little Black Cat, coming to you live out there in radioland. We got a great stream tonight; a few indie games, I might play an old favorite, who knows where the night will take us? I hope you enjoy the stream and I hope you enjoy the jokes and remember, no backseat gaming., or I’ll turn this car around! If you like the video, like it, if you dislike it, dislike it, but let’s waste no further time and get to gaming.”

You paused. and inhaled deeply.

“How long was that?”

This was an odd little game that developed between you and your chat. When you first started, you tried to make your intro as personable as possible and it just got longer and and more ridiculous. Now you said it as fast as possible to see if you could beat your best time.

The times rolled in.

The chat flooded with emojis of potatoes that were meant to be chicken nuggets. Truly a crime against humanity that there wasn’t a nugget emoji.

You navigated over to Keeho’s Twitch page to find him, as your spies informed correctly, already streaming. As you and your chat made your way over to his, and his chat was suddenly filled with the same message of five nuggets in a row, over and over again.

Keeho chuckled.

Questions for 15 Friends Tag Game

ARE YOU NAMED AFTER ANYONE?

Not that I know of. I think my middle name was after someone but, if that's the case, I don't know who.

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU CRIED?

This weekend watching Days. That game breaks me every time.

DO YOU HAVE KIDS?

Nope and don't ever plan on it.

WHAT SPORTS DO YOU PLAY/HAVE YOU PLAYED?

Uhhhh, none.

I tried out for the basketball team twice in elementary school but didn't make the team either time. That school, and especially the coach, had it out for me though (I am neurodivergent had behavioural issues so they didn't let me do much).

If it counts, I was on the Improv team in middle school. That was a ton of fun and I would've kept doing it into highschool if the teacher who was in charge of the competitions didn't retire (no one stepped up after that)

Other than that not really anything.

DO YOU USE SARCASM?

Oh definitely. I grew up in an incredibly sarcastic household lol

WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU NOTICE ABOUT PEOPLE?

Uhhh, I haven't really thought about it...

Probably hair? That's how I tend to recognise most people, which is most definitely unreliable (thanks for that brain lol).

I'd feel weird saying anything artistic, because honestly I consider those skills more than talents (since they're something I actually work towards improving and not something that I can just do for some reason lol).

So alternatively, I think my talent is simultaneously have the worlds worst and best balance. Like I can fill up a cup completely (and I mean completely, there's a meniscus and everything) and I can bring that up to my mouth without spilling a drop, but at the same time, there have been several occasions where I have fallen out of chairs while doing nothing but colouring. I can walk across a completely rounded balance beam (like curtain rod look and size) eyes closed and backwards, but walking I'm tripping every other step.

I can also quack like a duck so convincingly I've tricked hunters lol

Drawing, animating, reading, writing, and playing video games (and doing stuff for local theatre productions if that counts).

Yes, currently I have a dog, Neve. She's a Golden Retriever-Labrador mix and she's very strange.

My brother also has a cat, but she lives in the basement and I never see her lol

HOW TALL ARE YOU?

I couldn't tell you the last time I measured my height, but I'm only a bit taller than my mom (4"11 and a bit), so probably 5"-5"1.

FAVOURITE SUBJECT IN SCHOOL?

Chemistry.

I love chemistry. I love balancing formulas. I love the experiments and demonstrations (even if when I was doing them I kept burning my hands... I swear I was being careful I'm just cursed lol). I love learning about all the elements properties and stuff. The math isn't awful (like in physics). And it makes me feel smart.

DREAM JOB?

My dream job is whatever I have to do to be able to make my own show (my current plan is making an indie studio) and also being able to make a living off of doing tables at cons.

I'm actually slowly but surely working towards both right now. A lot of just saving and planning at the moment but I'm getting there.

Gonna start applying for grants soon-ish, so wish me luck lol

Favorite color: Green!! I feel like this would be really hard to guess, even if you could see my wardrobe. I hardly ever wear it but it's my favorite! Like, in the summer, if you look up through a maple tree when the sun is right behind it, that's my favorite color.

Last movie/TV show: Today I watched Metalder episode 17, also known as 'That Time Ryusei Serenaded Topgunder With His Own Theme Song on the Saxophone". It's a very good episode. Every episode of Metalder is a good episode. It's a very good show.

Sweet/spicy/savory?: Sweet-Spicy. Ginger and cinnamon and turmeric.

Last thing I googled: "pov indie genre", I did my spotify wrapped and I did not know what that meant.

Current obsession: I am so obsessed with my DnD characters. I'm playing this Phantom Rogue right now who is SO self indulgent and I love them so much and they have a whole spotify playlist I'm constantly updating and I write little dramatic speeches that I'll never use but they give me insight into their character and ahsajhfdhgnvhdvndvhdh OH I can't stop reading Undead Unluck. I genuinely have no idea what's going to happen next whenever an arc ends, it's really fun. The first chapter is a HORRIBLE first impression but if you keep going... I'm like 99 chapters in and it makes me feel insane. (also it's... actually very romantic!!)

According to a tweet from last year, The Clientele “do not self identify as indie-pop”, a comment I was reminded of during the “we’re not like those bands!” discourse from earlier in the list. Which is fine tbh, they can identify however they want: they’ve always formed part of the bedrock of UK indiepop in my opinion, but there’s something a lot more epic and considered about their sound than some of their more shambolic brethren, and they’ve never been shy of the odd 8 minute rock-out either. Still, where do we find On A Summer Trail? As a limited release 7” single on a tiny subsidiary of a tiny indiepop label that’s named after a Huggy Bear lyric. One is reminded of the adage about walking and quacking like ducks. Anyway…

This was one of two singles from 2014 (the other being the American release Falling Asleep) that heralded a new era for The Clientele, with both featuring a heavy emphasis on the Iranian Santur dulcimer. But rather than giving Summer Trail a Middle Eastern vibe, the effect seems only to emphasise the band’s Britishness, adding a baroque psychedelia to their (don’t call it) jangle-pop sound. It’s a song that feels like an English summertime: the chord progressions descend like a path into the woods, while the cornfields and long grass of the lyrics lend a kind of rustic innocence to the romance at its centre.

As the rain batters down on the flat roof above me, it does feel slightly perverse in late Autumn - that most Clientele of all the seasons - that I’ve picked their most Summery single here. In my defence, I think we were still in August when I started putting the list together and this was one of the first on the team sheet. I was moved to revisit my choice recently in light of the changing situation but, of all their UK singles, there’s not really even anything from their phenomenal early run that matches up to this late period favourite. While most of the acts in this stretch of the list have a natural home in the 10s, it’s comforting to find a band 15 years into their career who I can confidently place this far down, safe in the knowledge that they were better than they’d ever been and as good as anything else too.

90's Watch: Slacker (1990)

I'm pretty sure I saw Slacker during a limited run in Houston before it was in wide release in the summer of 1990. Apparently wide release occurred in 1991, but I know I saw it in 1990. The film was part of the dawn of the indie film movement that would define film over the next decade. In some minute ways, it also opened the door to Austin, TX as cool, hep city - which is a designation which will eventually fuck up a city beyond all recognition, which is where we're at today with the Capitol City.

But in the summer of 1990, just moved from Austin to Spring, TX, somehow my brother and I talked our mom into driving us downtown Houston from our suburban enclave to see the movie. To say "art film" is not my mom's bag is putting it mildly (it's more of a "what are you talking?" than an angry aversion), but she knew she'd see familiar sights as the movie was shot around the central core of Austin as it was then, and heard the movie was a comedy. So. We loaded into the GMC conversion van and made our way downtown. I believe film-participant and former Butthole Surfers drummer Teresa Taylor (RIP) was in the audience with us, but could never be sure.

Like any white kid of a certain age from Austin, Slacker can feel weirdly personal. By the age of 15 when I moved away from town, we were already making voyages down to the University of Texas campus to explore and shop at the college-kid record stores (and covertly see college girls). And in a town the size of Austin at that time, there was some bleed between the college and 20-something culture and hep high school kids looking to emulate what they say near campus. In short - even at 15 I was pretty familiar with the look and whatnot of the cast of Slacker as folks I saw around town and whose ranks I would be joining when I returned to Austin in '93 for five glorious years of undergrad.

The folks in the film have a decade or more on me, so they aren't peers. The film was shot using locals - actors and otherwise - and this time I did check the credits to see if any colleagues from over the years were included in the cast. (I have long known my Film I instructor was the Greek cousin who appears briefly and doesn't want to have her arm licked to get a stamp to get into a show for free. I also once pee'd next to Moonlanding Guy at Baby Acapulco - on my 21st birthday, to be exact).

I've seen the movie within the past decade or so, and my shock at seeing the Austin of my memories is now slightly muted- but on one viewing I had a deeply emotional reaction, like seeing a long lost scrap-book of family photos. The intersection of 6th and Lamar, in the film a low-lying auto-dealership across the street from the now-gone G&M Steakhouse, is now the HQ for Wholefoods, and a massively trafficked cross-ways in town. Austin was not a wealthy town, and it often seemed like we were living in the remains of post-war prosperity, depending on where you were - especially on side-streets where clubs would sit. Storefronts were often boarded up, former warehouses had broken windows and rusting equipment inside. Curbs were broken and crumbling.

The initial boom of the late 90's started the change, and now all of that has been cleared and built over. The old-style houses occupied by cast in the film are all now gone and replaced with skyscraper condos for well-to-do college kids. The Half-Price books shown was a pretty good bar and grill at last check. Les Amis was plowed under for a strip-center featuring a smoothy place and a Panda Express and a short-lived Johnny Rockets. Fuck. How did Quack's ever close? And I miss Sound Exchange.

But what is Slacker about?

It certainly captures a critical moment. Other movies tried to get it on the heels of this film (see: Reality Bites), but only Coupland's Generation X also reflects the generation that came to be in the wake of the Boomers, growing up with a certain nihilism and in the wake of the ego-centrism of the Woodstock-reliving, Me-generation, which spilled no small amount of ink constantly asserting themselves as *very* important. The characters of the film live on a sunny Austin summer day (the sun is so oppressive), able to survive on meager means as long as you can afford beer and cigarettes. This is before the internet came along five years later and everyone suddenly had jobs and money. But there was a hot moment when we really weren't sure what we were supposed to do for a living as overly educated people raised to be white collar workers but with minimal interest in what that looked like peered into the future. We took McJobs. We drank beer. We tried to find perspective and enjoy whatever this was going to be.

The characters of Slacker are a medley of under-employed college graduates, as Austin often was (the gag was every waiter had their PhD in Medieval Literature, and it was often true), waxing rhapsodic as they piece through the philosophy classes they took, what it means to perform actions or not (and isn't not performing an action an action?), and kind of cooking with the idealists hope for a revolution if only someone would do that for them, maybe they'd join in if it doesn't conflict with band-practice. Within a few years, all of this would be a little *too* familiar, and if you weren't one of these folks (I wasn't really) you certainly knew them. It's both a truth and a bit of the film that really sticks out now that these folks live in the remnants of better years, in houses built for families and professors, now occupied by a rotating cast of friends and acquaintances, walking between repurposed and derelict buildings with paint jobs that haven't been touched since the LBJ Administration.

There are recurring themes, like Tolstoy, anarchism as a romantic (and possibly fraudulent) concept, self-perfection versus societal expectations, what it means to travel and have roots or not, utility of philosophical conversation. Conspiracy theories may all be true in the world of this film, from government moon-landing and cosmic kidnappings to the many JFK theories. And there's a blase attitude to horror and potential horror that I think The Kids don't get is a hallmark of a certain stripe of Gen-Xer (y'all didn't grow up being told you'd die in a mushroom cloud every day the way we did, nor with people who were in the Holocaust, Depression and other joys of the 20th Century). But it's also a particularly Texan flavor of all this, which I think gives it some charm.

The scenes are mostly bite-sized, moving swiftly from one collection of thoughts to another, the film following each person as they touch each other - another thing that feels 90's Austin is that you were usually only 2-3 degrees away from knowing somebody - it was a small town. The actors aren't pros, but somehow it feels more believable that way as awkwardly phrased conversations spill out ideas all over the table. I have favorite scenes and less favorite scenes, but on the whole, I love that someone took the idea they warn you NOT to do in film school - think your late-night convos with your pals would make for great cinema - and makes it absolutely work. If you have patience for it.

The film is trying to find beauty in the mundane, in the hilarious intersection of action and in-action, of the absurdities of trying to sort it all out over beer and cigarettes rather than doing. It's not judging too many of the characters.

It's not impossible to imagine Slacker in 2023, even in Austin, but the lifestyle presented isn't affordable here anymore, the bars are now swarmed by tourists, and the collection of young people has shifted to the East Side, which is nowhere present in the film (the deep Whiteness of Austin is also very, very present in this movie, likely by accident, but reflects the core of the city of the time). The internet and smartphones have no place here. This is a quotable but not a memeable depiction of reality.

I know the movie would drive some people insane. The do-nothing bo-ho's of the film, sitting around pondering imponderables or celebrating violence, or the fact it seems almost unAmerican to eschew industriousness kind of misses the mark. There's massive potential here, but this is what a world we've created that we're still sailing on the momentum of decades prior, looks like when you have time and aren't sure what to do with it during your time on this planet.
