#in this one she's struggling with her self-image a lot especially compared to sophie
man, drafting kotlc exile rewrite is making me realize how much potential there is to give Quinn (my oc) a villain arc.

hi i want to write about korin and vil’s relationship because it’s a lot and even though this verse is literally a meme to me at this point, i’ve accidentally gone and got attached to some of korin’s dynamics with characters.
i want to preface this by saying i’m clearly not a vil roleplayer and i’m not someone that knows like ... a lot lore nor character wise. all of this is based off of my personal interpretations and what canon (the wiki KHGLDF) has provided me. so with all that in mind i’m sorry if something in particular might not fit in your mind.
to begin it should be noted that despite maybe not appearing so right off the bat, korin absolutely fits within pomefiore’s dorm. the seeming obsession and pursuit of perfection and beauty that both vil and the dorm as a general vibe exhibit are qualities that she has, just in a uniquely subtle way. so in a way korin and vil are extremely similar. it’s their methodology, however, that’s at complete odds and thus where their strife starts.
korin’s fixation of beauty and being perceived as pretty is undoubtly connected to her childhood. she’s always struggled with her appearance and as she grew older made it a point to always present herself in a certain manner.
i think before epel’s inclusion within the dorm, vil’s “project” was korin. which led to a lot of the scrutiny that we see epel under in ep 5 being focused on her instead. at first it was actually very pleasent for her. she wanted to change and vil was just the catalyst she needed in order to start that. plus, it was ... almost kind of like bonding? in korin’s mind it felt like a friendship that she had never had before — i.e like ones you see in teen movies.
vil for their part has never been cruel or melicious with their comments and nitpicks, however. from what we see it comes from a genuine place and a wish to help. but korin, on the other hand, is highly sensitive and predispositioned to an extremely negative self-image. something not exactly known to anyone, let alone vil. so those critiques, instead of being seen as a way to improve, began to quickly worsen her already low self-esteem. they felt more like attacks on her being and as korin isn’t someone really capable of verbalizing her problems it goes on until she does finally snap.
basically they live in a sick cycle of vil not knowing what they’re saying hurts more than helps and korin, instead of explaining that, gets defensive and incites an argument instead. obviously this would wear down literally anyone pretty quickly so after a certain point all their interactions just become ... extremely passive agressive.
there’s, of course, other problems too. korin’s lack of care towards school and her grades in general is also a pretty big sticking point because by all accounts she’s a representative of pomefiore as a fellow third year. it’s a bad look to have an upperclassman be so indifferent and downright disrespectful at times. especially when said third year does often get in trouble and the responsibilty falls to vil to clean up her messes.
ALSO! a big inspiration for these two actually comes from howl and sophie from howl’s moving castle. more specifically, from the scene where howl starts to break down over his hair and sophie’s reaction to it. i think it’s extremely fitting in that korin sees vil’s struggles as ... almost trivial compared to her’s even though they’re the exact same.
howl: i give up. i see no point in living if i can’t be beautiful. sophie: fine! so, you think you’ve got it bad? sophie: i’ve never once been beautiful my entire life!
at the end of the day though i believe they both deeply care for each other but just aren’t really meant to be friends until they both work out their personal issues which may have started after episode 5 but i can guarantee it hasn’t fixed everything.

18.11.2020 - Ryan Gander Wednesday Lecture Documentary – Me, My Selfie and I
This week’s lecture was about Ryan Gander and about the influence of things such as ‘Selfies’ and online influence such as social media.
The first topic to be talked about was Instagram and a woman called ‘Sophie Lee’ who is a model and fire-breather. She only had a few thousand followers after having Instagram for a few years. But she had an accident where the air conditioning in one of the venues she went to stopped working and as a result when she breathed fire the fire blew back in her face. It left her with heavy scarring and burns along with swelling. She didn’t come out with this story for months on Instagram, but she had the realisation that she had to since she was just lying to herself. But ironically, after coming out with the story and images she gained thousands more followers and people from all around the world were there to support her. She was being her true self without lying and people looked up to her more for it.
When talking about modern selfies, Gander goes on to talk about how if 5 years ago he saw someone holding their phone out and posing for a picture he would have found it completely vain and narcissistic and disgusting and embarrassing. He then said but now people have become immune and used to narcissism and vanity. When first hearing this I disagreed with it as when thinking about myself personally and my relationship with selfies they always make me feel just a little better about myself. I have always struggled with my self-image my whole life, especially more now after the years of coming to terms with my identity of being a trans man. I don’t often take selfies of myself, but when I do, and I see myself as masculine, it helps me just that little bit more with my gender dysphoria. Although, I do understand where he is coming from with this point. There have been countless times where I’ve seen people take pictures of themselves and use them as a way to shame others and put other people down because they aren’t as attractive as them. Or when people would wear a face full of makeup and heavily use filters and brag about how much better they are compared to everyone else.
He then talks about one of Freud’s theories about ego. He makes a comparison to bugs bunny where he would have a devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other. The ego would represent the self (you), then there’s the id which represents our impulses and desires and our constant need for gratification and then there’s the superego which represents our morals and the person we want to be.
Gander then went on to talk about someone called ‘Emma’ who 20 years ago completely cut herself off from technology and lives in a house made of mud. She likes to live disconnected from technology and when Gander entered he was asked to leave his phone in the car. Although it’s not something I’d do myself, I have always found it interesting to think about what it would be like to live away from everyone else. I always go back to the same image in my head of living in a small wood cabin out in the woods with my girlfriend where we can just relax and not have to worry about everything all the time.
Another person he went to talk about was a Youtuber called ‘DanTDM’ and he spoke about how he couldn’t remember the last time he took a break or a holiday from working just for himself. He then started to talk about how he enjoys video games and how he sees them as an escape from everything around him and how sometimes you can just get stuck in the moment with them and just fully relax. I found myself fully relating to this point as I always find myself getting so lost in games such as Skyrim or Zelda: Breath of the Wild. When I play these games ill just stop what I’m doing and just take in the landscape and scenery around me, and mixed with the beautiful music with these games I’ll just be fully wrapped up in these games. Whenever I’m feeling stressed or I just need an escape from my everyday life, I’ll simply pick up a game and play it and I’ll immediately feel all of the stress and worry I felt before just melt away.
The next topic he went to talk about was a ‘trans-humanist’ called Zoltan Istvan who is also a Journalist. He visited him as he explained how trans humanism is born on peoples need to want to improve themselves. He spoke a lot about wanting to constantly evolve himself through technology and altering his own body. Something that Ryan said that stuck with me is how he is completely happy being himself and he would never want to change himself. I felt myself relating to this a lot, I never want to have to change for anyone, and I want to keep being myself and I want to keep my individuality. But Istvan felt almost addicted to technology in a way by saying in the next 10 to 20 years how he would want to have a robotic arm and how he would want to be mostly composed of mechanical parts. He then went on to talk about how humans aren’t a very good species, but how were getting better. He then said how trans humanists want power over all of nature.
After talking to Istvan, he then went to talk to someone helping run a company by the name of ‘ALCOR’ who people will pay upwards of $250,000 to cryo-preserve your body. Or you could opt for the smaller price of $80,000 to just preserve your head. I agreed with Gander when he said how it all feels so odd and unfamiliar. I personally don’t know what to think of technology like this. As Gander said some people would and do call him mad for doing things such as this as people would be paying thousands of dollars to preserve their loved ones that they’d never get to talk to again, since the technology for them to be brought back to life would be years and years into the future after they had died themselves if the technology was to ever exit in the first place. It’s something that’s still a highly political conversation that goes along with morals and even consent. For example there was a case of a child who just about made it to her third birthday and she ended up passing away from brain cancer. Her family then decided to put her though this procedure themselves. But she’s too young to consent, and she couldn’t have given this consent for a life changing procedure to be done to her to begin with. Whether her parents will go through the same procedure with her or not, it’s still a case of her not having a choice in this decision that was made for her.
Although Gander didn’t talk about any of the work he has made himself, I still don’t personally relate to his work around social media and selfies. It’s not something I would personally do with my own work. Although I did find this documentary to be interesting overall as it opened up a range of questions centred around technology and social media that I had never really considered before along with some aspects of it that I heavily relate to such as gaming being a big escape for me. Overall, when listening to this documentary I found it to be interesting from all of the different routes and paths Gander went down and explored when thinking about social media and how it has changed people.
