Being held up at home has caused a great deal of reflection on my life, on my work, on our culture. As isolated as we are I can’t help but feel a sense of solidarity with all of you. The world has literally come together and collectively decided to tank the economy for the sake our safety as a species. That is beautiful. It inspires me and gives me a sense of hope for the human race, which I can’t say I had a month ago. We are all collectively cocooning, recreating ourselves and developing new patterns within our culture. It reminds me of the metamorphosis process. If you aren’t familiar with the mystery of the Imaginal Cell, read on. Interesting factoids await you! A Story About the Imaginal Cell: When a caterpillar experiences metamorphosis, it must first come to terms with its mortality. Amorphous cells, known as Imaginal Cells, multiply within the chrysalis, impervious to the caterpillar’s immune system. When the Imaginal Cells finally reach critical mass, the defeated caterpillar accepts its mortal fate, and metamorphosis begins. At this point, the newly awakened cells band together, transform, and become the mysterious creature that we know as “butterfly.” I see this as a metaphor for the transformative, creative process of not knowing. Sometimes we must let go of the traditional constructs that we “understand” in order to discover something new and beautiful within ourselves. As I mentioned before, we as a culture are cocooning. We have no idea as to what what we will become, but I have faith that there will be beauty. I LOVE GOLD! Ok, I guess that isn’t all that profound of a statement coming from a jeweler ... But I don’t care. I love it! I didn’t always. This love affair is relatively new. It’s softer feeling than most metals. Richer, but somehow it also feels harder and more rigid than other metals I’ve worked with. This is what a brand new sheet of keum boo gold leaf looks like. It’s color is so rich, it’s texture is so delicate. Looking at an untouched sheet like this, all I see is pure potential. I’ve always been fascinated by the art of keum-boo. I even experimented with it a little bit when I was in school. This line of jewelry, the Imagine Cell Collection, is only the beginning of my exploration of this technique. SLUMBER is one of my favorite designs in the Imaginal Cell series. I wear it all the time. There is something about this teardrop shape ... perhaps it’s simply the marquise silhouette. That is one of my favorite shapes, after all. This is the oxidized keum boo, but it is also available in the raw silver with the gold trim. I will post photos of those soon. Choosing which piece to showcase in the July issue of British Vogue was a difficult task. I finally decided to use the Chrysalis design from the Imaginal Cell Collection because it is one of my most popular and also one of my favorites. Choosing to follow through with this three month showcase was a big commitment and quite scary.
