🔍 In this paper, we introduce YoloV8-SLAM, a groundbreaking approach that revolutionizes Visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (VSLAM) systems. Our method skillfully integrates dynamic object identification and advanced multi-view geometry techniques. By employing YoloV8, a leading-edge object detection algorithm, alongside Enhanced Multi-View Geometry, we effectively handle various dynamic scenarios.
📊 Our extensive experiments reveal that YoloV8-SLAM significantly outperforms existing and state-of-the-art SLAM systems. We achieved remarkable reductions in Absolute Trajectory Error (ATE) and Relative Pose Error (RPE) - up to 89.1% and 88.0% respectively when compared to ORB-SLAM3. The superiority of our method is also evident against DynaSLAM, ORB-SLAM2, and DM-SLAM, with reductions exceeding 39.8% in ATE and 66.4% in RPE.

The 5G World Forum is now in its third year. Since its inception, the conference has sought to be the primary meeting place for stakeholders in the field of wireless technology. Due to COVID-19 and the need to protect the health and safety of attendees, this year’s conference will be virtual. What will not change, however, is the event’s importance as a forum for the latest advances in 5G.This year’s theme is “5G and Beyond: A Comprehensive Look at Future Networks.” As such, the conference will focus on how 5G innovations will change wireless technology—and our global society as a whole. More specifically, the event will cover the development of novel mobile network architecture. This architecture stands to improve the physical data rate of 5G networks and also create a new ecosystem for the deployment of novel services and applications.The conference program features renowned keynote speakers and worldwide industry fora, as well as panel discussions, workshops, and other opportunities to learn and network. The program also features ten topical/vertical tracks that conference attendees can explore. Meta creates a new custom chip.  In this week's roundup, find out what it does. We're also excited to show you some new VR apps that aren't necessarily games but can be just as entertaining. We also featured a few VR gaming developments that you should be aware of. Let's get started. 
New Custom Chip from Meta 
A prototype of a neural network accelerator chip was presented by Meta in a paper published for the 2022 IEEE Custom Integrated Circuits Conference.  This custom chip was described as the “that achieves energy-efficient performance for running eye gaze extraction of the Codec Avatar model”.
Codec Avatars surfaced way back in March 2019. It was presented by the same company, which was then Facebook. Codec Avatars have multiple neural networks. First off, it will have to be generated by an image capture of 171 cameras. It is then driven by a prototype VR headset that has five cameras. Using the VR headset the Codec Avatars can be controlled in real-time. It has gone through evolution through time. Today, Meta is providing a possible solution to driving these realistic avatars using a standalone VR headset. 
The custom chip is just an experiment. It is expected to function for a limited aspect of Codec Avatars’ system. Other processes are still mainly handled by the Snapdragon XR2. Such new capabilities, though, are very important in the future.
Which headsets will Meta launch in the following years?
If The Information was right about all its claims inside information about the roadmap to Meta’s next steps, four new headsets will be released leading to the year 2024. The headsets will be made available in the markets in the following order.
1. Project Cambria - September 2022 2. Stinson - 2023 3. Cardiff -  2023 4. Funston - 2024
Additionally, Meta reached out to The Information to correct the supposed price range of the Project Cambria headset. It will cost more than $800.
2 new treadmill VRs by Kat VR
Kat VR is adding two more new treadmill VRs to its lineup of consumer-ready treadmill VR. One is KAT Walk C2 which is compatible with all major platforms:  Meta Quest, PC VR, and PlayStation VR. The other is the KAT Walk C2 Plus. Beginning May 13th, the KAT Walk C2 and C2 Plus will be available for funding on Kickstarter.
The latest treadmill VRs are simple to use. It would provide consumers with a natural walking experience with 360-degree movement. It allows you to safely run, walk, leap, and crouch in any VR game that supports free locomotion.
The Kat Walk C2 Plus is the pro version, featuring incorporated haptic technology that is compatible with existing motion controller haptics. It also has the brand-new Smart Sitting Posture System. This will allow gamers to instantly transition from a standing to a seated position.
New VR dating app
Flirtual is an online dating software that matches VR users based on their interests and then arranges a meetup in VR. What makes dating in VR different? VR, of course, raises the ante by providing the sensation of being physically present with others while also incorporating a large amount of body language. Learn more about the app here.

Prototype Meta Headset Includes Custom Silicon for Photorealistic Avatars on Standalone
Researchers at Meta Reality Labs have created a prototype VR headset with a custom-built accelerator chip specially designed to handle AI processing to make it possible to render the company’s photorealistic Codec Avatars on a standalone headset.
Long before the company changed its name, Meta has been working on its Codec Avatars project which aims to make nearly photorealistic avatars in VR a reality. Using a combination of on-device sensors—like eye-tracking and mouth-tracking—and AI processing, the system animates a detailed recreation of the user in a realistic way, in real-time.
Or at least that’s how it works when you’ve got high-end PC hardware.
Early versions of the company’s Codec Avatars research were backed by the power of an NVIDIA Titan X GPU, which monstrously dwarfs the power available in something like Meta’s latest Quest 2 headset.
But the company has moved on to figuring out how to make Codec Avatars possible on low-powered standalone headsets, as evidenced by a paper published alongside last month’s 2022 IEEE CICC conference. In the paper, Meta reveals it created a custom chip built with a 7nm process to function as an accelerator specifically for Codec Avatars.

According to the researchers, the chip is far from off the shelf. The group designed it with an essential part of the Codec Avatars processing pipeline in mind—specifically, analyzing the incoming eye-tracking images and generating the data needed for the Codec Avatars model. The chip’s footprint is a mere 1.6mm²
“The test-chip, fabricated in 7nm technology node, features a Neural Network (NN) accelerator consisting of a 1024 Multiply-Accumulate (MAC) array, 2MB on-chip SRAM, and a 32bit RISC-V CPU,” the researchers write.
In turn, they also rebuilt the part of the Codec Avatars AI model to take advantage of the chip’s specific architecture.
“By re-architecting the Convolutional [neural network] based eye gaze extraction model and tailoring it for the hardware, the entire model fits on the chip to mitigate system-level energy and latency cost of off-chip memory accesses,” the Reality Labs researchers write. “By efficiently accelerating the convolution operation at the circuit-level, the presented prototype [chip] achieves 30 frames per second performance with low-power consumption at low form factors.”

By accelerating an intensive part of the Codec Avatars workload, the chip not only speeds up the process, but it also reduces the power and heat required. It’s able to do this more efficiently than a general-purpose CPU thanks to the custom design of the chip which then informed the rearchitected software design of the eye-tracking component of Codec Avatars.
But the headset’s general purpose CPU (in this case, Quest 2’s Snapdragon XR2 chip) doesn’t get to take the day off. While the custom chip handles part of the Codec Avatars encoding process, the XR2 manages the decoding process and rendering the actual visuals of the avatar.

The work must have been quite multidisciplinary, as the paper credits 12 researchers, all from Meta’s Reality Labs: H. Ekin Sumbul, Tony F. Wu, Yuecheng Li, Syed Shakib Sarwar, William Koven, Eli Murphy-Trotzky, Xingxing Cai, Elnaz Ansari, Daniel H. Morris, Huichu Liu, Doyun Kim, and Edith Beigne.
It’s impressive that Meta’s Codec Avatars can run on a standalone headset, even if a specialty chip is required. But one thing we don’t know is how well the visual rendering of the avatars is handled. The underlying scans of the users are highly detailed and may be too complex to render on Quest 2 in full. It’s not clear how much the ‘photorealistic’ part of the Codec Avatars is preserved in this instance, even if all the underlying pieces are there to drive the animations.

The research represents a practical application of the new compute architecture that Reality Lab’s Chief Scientist, Michael Abrash, recently described as a necessary next step for making the sci-fi vision of XR a reality. He says that moving away from highly centralized processing to more distributed processing is critical for the power and performance demands of such headsets.
One can imagine a range of XR-specific functions that could benefit from chips specially designed to accelerate them. Spatial audio, for instance, is desirable in XR across the board for added immersion, but realistic sound simulation is computationally expensive (not to mention power hungry!). Positional-tracking and hand-tracking are a critical part of any XR experience—yet another place where designing the hardware and algorithms together could yield substantial benefits in speed and power.

Toy Story Animation Analysis
Before "Toy Story," it was estimated that the investment of animated films to feature films takes a few minutes or a few seconds. This project aimed to construct an entire feature film depicting an entirely digitally generated universe, populating it with participants who seem to behave on their own volition and knowledge and rendering it with the colors, shapes, and textures of real stylized life.
Pixar's graphics projects have included the Pixar Image Computer, RenderMan software rendering products, collaborative technological advancement of Disney's Computer Animated Production System (CAPS), numerous short films, including Tin Toy, which won an Oscar in 1988, as well as the creation of organic television advertisements.
An animator begins the conventional hand-drawn method of creating animation by sketching primary poses for each character in a frame, roughing out the extremes and flow of the motion. The primary poses are determined by an exposure sheet, a breakdown of the action in the shot, and a dope sheet, which is a written indication of where the words and tension fall in the dialogue. The shot is then passed on to a cleanup artist, who redraws the primary poses while ensuring that they stick to the characters' existing look. Finally, they hand over the job to animation assistants, who complete drawings for each of the 24 frames in a second film. A single shot can take up to thirty people to complete, while thirty animators completed toy Story. A series of refinements achieve computer animation. In contrast to traditional animation, in which key poses are defined for an entire character, computer animators can arrange overlapping keyframes for different parts of the body at different frames in the shot. As the animation progresses, more subtle secondary and tertiary movements can be added to the central movement, which is then completed by facial gestures.
With "Toy Story," the first full-length computer-animated film, with "Toy Story," the first full-length computer-animated film, Pixar changed animation forever in 1995. However, "Toy Story 4" demonstrates that it is far from finished changing the game. Over 77 minutes of animation spread through one thousand five hundred sixty-one (1,561) shots in the film. To manage all of this video, they had to create a new program called Renderman.
