I know some people are still pushing to broaden "neurodivergent" to mean "literally anyone with any mental disorder" and I'd like to reiterate that as an autistic person it's really useful to have a term for the subcommunity of similar folks and taking our term from us just because you want it is uh. well.

folks with mental disorders of all sorts deserve community, support, and destigmatization, but you don't have to take our term to do it is all.

#someone I follow mentioned it #and I did also reply to them directly about it #I just also wanna restate my thoughts in my own space in case anyone was unclear on that. #someone else who follows them lashed out about it #which they are allowed to do even though I am allowed to permanently disengage with them #but they said something about me not wanting to associate and it's like. #did you miss the whole broader umbrella thing. #nd folks are a subcommunity not some special unique unrelated thing. #and surface symptom overlap doesn't tell me jack shit. #I'm guessing op isn't going to engage in either direction since I was disagreeing with them in the first place #which sucks a little cuz I was like 'hey I'm kind of uncomfortable with this use of this term and here's why' #which I don't think warrants 'hey can you shut the fuck up? what's your problem?' from a total stranger yknow. #idk I feel like 'you don't deserve to have a subcommunity let alone keep the term you already had for it' just feels like a rancid take #not exactly the solidarity people claim to want to appropriate the term for. #okay for the record the op of the actual post saw what happened and reached out to me (and agreed it was disproportionate) #and we had a much more constructive conversation about both the incident and our differing perspectives on the actual issue being discussed
