10, 15, 20, and 25 for the song asks!
Ooh, thanks!
10. Songs for spring, summer, fall, or winter (since you didn't specify, here's some of each!)
Spring: I love listening to "The Lusty Month of May," "Five Minutes of Spring," and "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning" on repeat just as it starts to get properly warm. That golden age musical - sound is just perfect for that time of year.
Summer: can't beat some old fashioned rock for summer. My picks today are "Do You Wanna Dance?" "Listen to the Music," and "Thunder Road."
Fall: I like a sort of quiet sigh in my music for fall, if that makes sense. "Don't Fence Me In," "Comes and Goes (In Waves)," and "Come Away With Me"
Winter: Would you believe that winter is the only season for which I don't have a playlist? I think because I just listen to Christmas music, idk. With that in mind, I think "Tundra," "The Silence of Siberia," and "We Cannot Waste the Light" are all no-brainers for me.
15. Most beautiful instrumentation
I'm recently obsessed with the sparse and lovely instrumentation of "Chasin' Wild Horses" that builds and builds throughout the piece. There was a good period several months back where I listened to it every night on the way home from work. Along similar lines, I love love love the track "Changing Seasons/Wild Horses" from the Legends of the Fall soundtrack. That's gotten a lot of play lately from me too. "Cathedrals" has a lovely little string and piano line that makes me feel very buoyant. Finally, I absolutely adore the piano line that goes to the choral piece "Nigra Sum." Have, since the first time I got to perform it.
20. Songs that make me think of my friends
Right now it's "Same Drugs," which my friend R played for me in the car, and "Levitating," which we danced to at a wedding recently, and "American Kids" from the line dancing, and "Part of Your World" for the way that E laughed when we sang that parody.
25. Songs I would kill for a chance to perform
War Requiem!!!! A little bit of a cheat since it's a major work and not just a smattering of songs, but bear with me. When I was much younger, I heard about how wonderful it was to perform from some friends a few years older than me in my HS choir. Just this last week, I got to attend a performance of it out at Yale and it. Was. Incredible. And it simply must be heard (and performed) live. And I would absolutely kill for the chance. Oh my goodness.

What's Bella's favourite kind of music? Does she like choral stuff?
Im sorry, I'm obsessed/lh
Dude, when it comes to my ocs, I do not mind at all!! Everyone should feel free to ask whatever they want! I get excited seeing questions about my ocs haha.
When it comes to music, she really likes lullabies of course.
youtube
^ the song she was singing in the ref. (Also kinda my voice claim for her haha)
She would probably like choral music, yeah! I don’t see her disliking many kinds of music…maybe ones that are too loud for her would be jarring (heavy metal, screamo) but other than that I can see her enjoying some pop music and soft rock.
She’d probably be a broadway musical nerd…

hello i came across your page and found you super interesting and a good source to go to when in need of some not sugarcoated opinions
im an army, been an army for a bit more than four years and just a few months ago i got super into enhypen and now well im obsessed
ive given other groups a chance… no one and when i say no one did it for me like enha i can’t believe they managed to turn the scale with bts for me im obsessed with both of them and now i have 14 babies
enha are really captivating and theres smth abt them thst idk its just special HOWEVER lets be real they are not doing so good with streams and charting and it pisses me off like crazy bc god do they deserve a lot more and i keep thinking what is it that they lack?
so i wanted to ask you do you think enha would make it big (armys pls dont come for me at the comparsion) but do u think they would make it big like bts? and secondly what are they lacking as a group in terms of everything (music, style, personalities, personas… etc)
***
Let's get the obvious out of the way lol. Unless it's a group from Big3, it's going to be near impossible for any currently active group to become as big as BTS this decade. For Big3 + HYBE groups, it's possible but difficult. Enhypen surprisingly doesn't follow BTS's playbook as closely as some other groups do. The three boy groups most closely following BTS's playbook right now, are:
RIIZE - in their whole concept being a coming of age odyssey with a rap-spin;
Stray Kids - practically everything about Stray Kids is BTS-inspired (and it's something I've talked about before);
Ateez - it's in their lore-heavy branding and performance focus, also utilizing rappers.
The key thing lacking for those three groups in reference to following BTS's playbook, in my opinion, is the music. Other things too, but it's the music that's the key limiting factor here. This doesn't kill their momentum and I'm not exactly saying the music bad, just that going by my taste, there's a lot of room for improvement.
ENHYPEN doesn't lack at all in the music department. I'm probably biased but it's also true many of their songs are produced by BigHit's team of producers who made the music that got BTS this big and who generally make stuff I like. So, Enha's got great songs, but like I've said before, currently, they're not a rap-focused or even rap-present group, and it's unusual for vocal-centered boy groups to become massively popular unless they're from SM, and even then, rap groups still outperform... I mean, we've seen that movie before.
But to follow BTS's playbook, they'll have to mitigate this lack of rappers - Bang PD/Belift has to push for more involvement from ENHYPEN into their song-making process. Having members with writing credits helps to show a more direct connection between the members and the song. It adds to a sense of ownership and legitimacy for a lot of fans (whether or not it actually reflects it). So far, in ENHYPEN Jake and Jay have contributed to songwriting and it's been very good. Ni-ki also takes part in making choreography. But for Enhypen to grow massively, the members need to be seen having more direct and consistent input into the creative process, whatever form that takes. Also, if I were them I'd lean even more into their choral, hiphop sound. Nobody does it like them and it's pure magic.
Also, ENHYPEN's lore is somewhat clumsily tacked into their MVs, making it difficult for people to understand the group's identity. Enha is a 'concept group'. Their concept trailers are beautifully shot, frankly a work of high cinema, something beyond the quality of most MVs. But then, all that complexity and subtext kinda disappears in their main MVs. Maybe it's because I've never been a theorist, but the presentation of lore symbolism in their MVs can be confusing and difficult to parse even with reading the WEBTOON. Ateez's lore by comparison is in a sense, 'simpler'. People might struggle to understand what ENHYPEN is and connect with them, when as a concept-heavy group, their lore is difficult to understand. It's up to Engenes to better compile and present the narratives around the group, to get more people to connect with them.
ENHYPEN are easily some of the best performers in their generation, but because of their style of music (vocal-heavy, limited rap/chanting verses paired with intricate choreography and floor-work), live concert performances can be very challenging. They pull it off amazingly well, but I worry for them tbh. Here, Ateez has figured out a formula that works to keep their performance energy consistently high: rely on simple rap/chant verses, focus on open, simple choreography that travels across the stage, and utilize props to add to drama.
Like I said earlier, Enha's music-scape and choreos add a layer of difficulty that make it harder to replicate BTS in terms of performance, as they currently are. Enha's vocals would need to improve, as will their stamina, to bridge the gap. But they are well on their way to getting there. If thing's continue to improve like it has so far, within a year or so they'll be seen as beasts. They're already incredible, but if they keep growing it will become more apparent to more people the unique mix of talent that exists in Enhypen.
Because that's what you saw that made you write this:
"a few months ago i got super into enhypen and now well im obsessed
ive given other groups a chance… no one and when i say no one did it for me like enha i can’t believe they managed to turn the scale with bts for me im obsessed with both of them and now i have 14 babies"
All seven of them are naturally, incredibly charismatic, and they seem to be very decent and talented people. That's why you're obsessed. Lol. In my view, Enhypen at their core is a high-performing hiphop team that does 'haunting and dramatic' contemporary pieces extremely well. Their performances are insanely intricate, and it frustrates me to no end that it's usually near impossible to translate all of what's happening in the practice to a stage performance.
Take for example their MMA2023 dance break:
youtube
It's been a source of fiery debate in my group chat since it dropped and I'm not even kidding. The amount of floor work, the precision, Heeseung, Ni-ki, Jungwon, Jay, Sunghoon's dance styles show best in krump breaks like this. Ni-Ki and Sunghoon trained in ballet and as a figure skater, respectively, and you can see it in how they move. Jungwon is a powerhouse, and Heeseung and Jay embody the sort of dual charisma that one can only be born with. You either have it, or you don't. They're all special and this is a performance that is just that good. But with the camerawork of the main show, the clashing outfits with the backup dancers, the poor lighting, means so much of this performance can be missed. The boys still did amazing. But when you see the practice and see what it's supposed to look like, it hits you just how limited they are by their intricate performances not captured better on stage. Engenes can work around this by hyping up good fancams, and dance practices that capture their effort.
The final thing I want to say in where ENHYPEN is lacking, is one in which it physically pains me because this is easy to fix: American roadshows/interviews. BTS had only one barely fluent English-speaker but he was also the person often most involved in making the music, and so he could better respond to questions about it. The rest of the group also made up for not being fluent English-speakers by doing comedic antics while remaining as engaged as possible in the interview. The person who usually contributes to Enhypen's American interviews is Jake for obvious reasons, sometimes Jay, but each time I've watched Jake speak he seems worse than unprepared. To be blunt. It's not enough for a group to show up on Western talk shows, they also have to effectively communicate who they are and why they're special. Enhypen does this so much better in variety content like this:
youtube
this too:
youtube
But in situations like this interview below, it's clear Jake sometimes struggles to explain some things, but he recovers quickly later in the interview.
youtube
Jungwon answers questions very well but speaks in Korean. It's fine, but working on his English can only be a positive in this scenario. For Jake too.

sometimes i feel ashamed of my past self for how she went around telling everyone, anyone who would listen about her musical director trauma. she wrote essays about it and turned them in for class credit, for graduation requirements. she stayed in teachers' classrooms and poured out her heart to them. she broke down in tears when chorale didn't fit into her schedule and she sobbed to her choir director that she was scared she'd never do ensemble work again. she said 'you want to know something fucked up that happened at rehearsal last week?' with a falsely bright smile to acquaintances who shifted uncomfortably in their seats and looked at each other out of the corners of their eyes. she wrote it into application essays for two universities and got rejected from both. how shortsighted of real struggle she must have been, how obsessively desiring of validation and attention she must have been. how embarrassing she was. get therapy, my old friends would probably tell her, not caring that talk therapy never got me anywhere but worse.
and then i can't help but forgive her. because all she wanted was for someone to listen. because her parents were quicker to blame her for sticking with hopes got up too high. because everyone seemed like they were so much better than her and she felt miserable, unwanted, ignored. because all she wanted was to be believed. i'm more selective of who i tell and what i reveal than i was before, but sometimes it's hard to keep it back. but one thing is clear now: whoever knows what happened to me knows for a good reason.
sometimes i still can't help but feel a little embarrassed. but i know now that i'm happy. i'm valued. i'm seen. and i'm believed. maybe if the ending wasn't happy, i wouldn't reconcile with it so easily; but that's just speculation. and speculation goes nowhere.

🐛 🗓️?
Thanks for the ask! I'm going to give you two songs from my Nightcrawler playlist, since the time I was super into X-Men and specifically Nightcrawler is super nostalgic to me. I must have been, what... seventeen? Yeah. This is music from when I was seventeen.
🐛 A song that gives you nostalgia / sounds nostalgic - Ode To Joy, but in German. lol. My darling teenage self did a lot of listening to German opera and choral music when I first got obsessed with Nightcrawler.
📅 A song that calls up a very specific time and place for you - Christmas when I was just barely eighteen. Again, a German song—but this one in German and English. Silent Night / Stille Nacht, sung in memory of the Christmas Ceasefire of World War I.
I remember that was the first Christmas I made my family a Christmas playlist, too! I had them listen to so much Stille Nacht. I would play it from my high school-issued Chromebook in the kitchen while we did after dinner chores.

OK so what i was actually up to looking through the samples (here's the actual comprehensive sheet) was verifying the use of Giygas soundfonts across UTDR. i should have done this in the music post in the first place but what can i say im not a respectable analyst im a fucking Gaster Guy for christ's sake (i'll be honest i totally forgot the sample sheet even existed until today)
so anyway:
in Deltarune so far, it looks like Giygas soundfonts are used only in ANOTHER HIM ("Giygas Static")
in Undertale, Giygas soundfonts are limited only to Amalgam ("Giygas Breath," "Giygas Static," "Giygas 3") and the Barrier ("Giygas Breath").
i don't think the Barrier sfx is relevant to anything i'm thinking about but i figured i should mention it for completeness. (i'm guessing it's a genuine instance of Yeah This Just Sounds Right For This Scene. even IF giygas samples are now "reserved" for whatever reason as of DR, that may not have been the case back then. it still may not be the case in the future!)
otherwise yeah, despite EB soundfonts being all over both games, Giygas soundfonts in particular are almost exclusively limited to ANOTHER HIM and Amalgam (which share the same "Giygas Static" soundfont, in fact). whether or not that constitutes a Connection or what that connection means is debatable but it does so far seem to be an intentional choice.
here are some other odds and ends from bouncing around the Music Zone today. these observations are pretty disjointed and probably not super interesting? i'm ambivalent about most of this as Worthwhile Data but i figure i might as well make note of it
mus_st_him.ogg uses the Chrono Trigger "piano." this isn't inherently super interesting. it's been identified in 3 other in-game UT tracks (Uwa!! So Temperate♫ ★, Reunited, Battle Against a True Hero) and one unused track (Bereavement). i don't think there's supposed to be like a pattern or anything there lol. many others have brought up Chrono Trigger more generally as a source of inspiration for tfox and raised the possibility of references to it (beyond music i mean) in Deltarune. given CT's frankly legendary status in RPG history it's not unthinkable to put it up on the Potentially Lore-Relevant Sound Design Choices pedestal alongside EarthBound but i don't wanna grasp too much at those straws right now lol
slightly more interesting is that this specific soundfont is only confirmed to be present once in Deltarune (so far), in ANOTHER HIM. given that this track is basically a straight up remix/re-imagining of mus_st_him.ogg it isn't really surprising that it uses the same soundfont, but i think it's a neat detail all the same.
also interesting is that the Chrono Trigger "piano" seems to be "reserved" now in DR, though none of the other Obviously Gastery Songs use it either. Darkness Falls uses Earthbound "Mellow Piano" (used one other time so far in that game, in Big Shot) and man.ogg uses SGM "Piano 3" (seemingly just an otherwise normal, all-purpose soundfont used in various places). honestly the CT piano might have just been brought back for that mus_st_him.ogg callback specifically and then shelved lol
oh except. the thing about "confirmed" instances. one of the sheet's contributors thinks it might be very quietly playing a countermelody around 0:33 in THE HOLY, which.......... veRY VERY INCHREsting,,,,, but also i don't want to get too invested in that if it hasn't been confirmed. it's pretty hard to hear but i can kind of detect something just before the choral voice kicks in again around 0:35. idk what to do with this honestly. i think the Man motif Possibly being used in THE HOLY is interesting enough without having to obsess this much over a tiny detail most people will never notice but w/e
Chrono Trigger soundfonts in general seem to be used much more sparingly in Deltarune. the "str" (string) is used in Powers Combined and ANOTHER HIM. moss_fanfare is composed entirely of 4 CT soundfonts for that nostalgic snes rpg achievement sound LOL. again i don't think this Means anything (probably just a stylistic/aesthetic choice more than anything.) just making a note of it
i also decided to double check for the G Sequence in Here We Are & Amalgam because why not. i haven't seen many claims thrown out about it around the Inter's Nets (at this point, i think if it were meaningfully present there'd be like 7 years' worth of duplicated Reddit posts about it lol) and yeah, i also don't hear it myself or really see it in any of the fanmade transcriptions i've found. Here We Are is clearly Alphy's motif more or less head to toe (which yeah. of course it is. true lab is About Her). Amalgam doesn't use any recognizable motifs as far as i can tell, which makes sense if we consider it's probably not supposed to sound familiar or grounded in the UT world (even in like a bad way), it's supposed to be completely alien and disorienting.
there are still some things about those songs that are rattling around my dome but given the fact that i'm Extremely Biased in favor of my own interpretations i'm worried about teetering too far into the Reading Into It Too Much Zone. idk why i'm so interested in this suddenly in the first place when we already have plenty of reasons to link G with the true lab (aside from him having been. u know. a royal scientist). i just really like these songs lmao
anyway noting this stuff for the sake of thoroughness but yeah i don't think it's worth thinking too hard on it tbh
Amalgam in particular is a pretty high-octane execution of the same techniques used in mus_st_him.ogg (lack of tonal center & resolution) but there kind of isn't any reason to get all weird about that, there are clear mechanical purposes to it. those techniques were used here because they elicit unease, tension, confusion, etc. and they're shared across both tracks because both tracks are intended to make us feel those ways, not because there's necessarily a thematic connection between them
i want so bad to make wild leaps about the parallel harmonies in both songs but again i think this is probably a disorientation tactic (makes it hard to distinguish the key) more than anything else
the piano the PIANO in Here We Are. the melody (sorry gonna butcher some Terms again here) from 0:45 - 1:28 is clearly (to my ear) riffing on Alphys's motif in the counter-melody but the shakeup from 1:28 onward, when the counter-melody ends, is. idk. nothing in that part of the fan arrangement i've been referencing seems to obviously match the Ideal progression of either the G Sequence or the Man variation and i'm not going to stretch too far on it. but yeah i think the idea of that bit being some form of G Piano is conceptually very interesting. it's just not really evident at this point as far as i'm concerned
as a note: Waltz of Seccom Masada predates Undertale's release by at least a year or two so it's not impossible that tfox could have had plans for it in UTDR by that point. do i think it's likely that it shows up at all in UT? no not really lol but it's not impossible i guess
Here We Are uses... the Mario Paint dog soundfont... I never would have noticed this otherwise but yeah you can hear it subtly barking under the 0:45-1:28 melody. i choose to interpret this as God bemoaning these crimes against his Creation

Okay so yes the first artist my friend gave me was Daniel Caesar. He has two albums Freudian(2017) and Case Study 01(2019). The genre is R&B and I don't really listen to that so I'm excited for the change.
Edit: I'll put it under a cut so there isn't a novella on the dash
Freudian (2017):
Oh I've heard this one before! Slow guitary alright. It's a duet
I've heard this before too! I must have heard them when the album first out. Another duet with a female voice. Love song.
All the songs sound very similar (not a bad thing). Breakup vibes..pls choose me. He uses a lot of female vocals so far which isn't a bad thing. she isn't a named feature.
More unnamed female vocals. All of the songs have been about relationships so far. Songs feel short
I really like the organ sounds. I feel like it would sound awesome in a car or overhead headphones. Lol the phone call frightened me lol
I didn't realize the song changed untill the middle lol. I like the choral (chorus? choir?) sound/vibe
Love song? I like the production in the last min. Makes it feel big
So many of the songs sound the same. I'm sleepy. Love song. Bring me with you
Another song. Had to look at the lyrics they were all melting together. About mutual obsession.
Last song! Help me this whole album sounds the same and has been about the same thing. Sounds nice. He has a good voice.
Okay I'm done. 4 named female features and some unnamed women as backing vocals. It suited his voice though. All of the songs sounded so similar I liked the vibe and production but wow they were the same. His voice is very nice. All the songs were about love and relationships I believe (I got lost at the end there). I wouldn't complain if I heard it again but I won't choose it for myself. 4.5/10
I simply have to take a break before the next album. This one made me so tired.
Case Study 01:
Oo spoken words. I'm trying to listen to the lyrics and I can't. Lol am I okay
Jamaicans?! I really like the vibes of this one. My favourite so far
Oo a brandy feature. Love song lalala
No what girl has Daniel on his knees so bad damn. Another love song. Used to be ugly now I hit from the back lol okay bestie. A voice mod falsetto fun! Wow Pharell feature. Big step up on this album. That last note was so extra for why
What the HELL is he talking about. This song sounds like the rest. I'm getting Sick of it now
I'm so tired help. I swear I'm trying.
Omg not a love song! His voice really is beautiful. Wait did John Mayer even sing?
These songs are all guitar. I'm trying to think if I've heard a drum more than twice. I guess they wanted me to shut up and now have drums near the end. It feels like a totally different song
I can't wait to be done. I guess I always knew but I didn't realize how much the production affects how much I enjoy music. Also it's so slow it's literally irritating me. My chest is getting tight.
Oh my god I'm almost done. These songs are giving sitting on a couch and someone singing to me and I HATE that. Why is this song so long. Why do people have songs that could be two. Why are we doing that. Just make two songs
Daniel Caesar is a wonderful vocalist. I simply do not like his music and won't listen to it again.
