like man i know Stoker was racist and probably never met a single foreign person in his life to have written stuff like that but i’m getting the impression that most people in the tags have never heard a person without a solid grasp on english speaking, because the stuff they point out as “obviously Stoker making stuff up as to how foreign people talk” are stuff i didn’t even pick up for having used those sentences structures back when i barely knew english or that i’ve seen from other people who are just starting english.

#the reactions everytime van Helsing speaks is genuinely giving me a headache at this point #i would not account for if it'd make sense for a Dutch person with poor grasp on English to talk like that #but the overdramatic 'we can't understand anything he's saying!' is really getting on my nerves #the sentences structures still look like stuff i'd see people without a good grasp on engish use #me when i was a teen learning english from stubborningly roleplaying online with dickheads who would laugh at my english mistakes included #like it's crazy Stroker was def racist as fuck and everything #but i read the way some people poke fun at it #and all i see is wow you've never talked with someone who didn't have a solid grasp on english in your whole life have you #ichatalks #ichasalty #ish??? if that makes sense??? #i'm not defending Stroker or saying the speech is not problematic in any way #just that the extreme reactions to it feels disconnected to the non-english native reality of how we pick up english #also just in general the comments themselves on stuff i didn't notice #because to me it's sentences structure i could do or that made sense to me #makes me SO insecure about my grasp on English #and i feel worse reading comment about it than i was reading Stroker's attempt at a foreign speech #so this is kinda sad lmao #(* Stoker for the tags bc i'm not correcting the tags)
