thinking about vampires
#the lifelong appeal of ‘the blood is the life’. sorry. just rewatched the stakeout#the thing that always haunted me about vampires when i was a child— and still does today— is the concept of eternal life.#to be that hungry. forever. eternally a predator under the moon. i’m still a little hypnotised by the concept#of course it’s the cliché thing of a child that strange clinging to a strange creature from folklore but. oh.#dark and strange and hideous. not alluring BECAUSE they killed but alluring AND they killed. to be blood-toothed#i was fascinated by the vampires in the skulduggery pleasant book series in particular. demure nervous victorianesque pale men with names#like anton shudder or caelaen who had to shut themselves in cages overnight because they would rip their own skin off and kill#indiscriminately. the animal characteristic of it all— and that being forever and innate. you walk the world for centuries or more unable to#tell anyone. you eventually give up relationships because they always wonder in the end why they age and you don’t.#as a kid i really was fascinated by the loneliness much more than the blood. although of course that was enticing too. the ultimate#nourishment from another…… i may have spoken about cannibalism too much on here though. anyway#i remember reading…. darren shan? is that the name? cirque du freak. in year seven english class. and at the end he’s left with this curse#of vampirism and has to leave the mortal family behind. i suppose it’s a sort of ultimate primal forbidding loneliness…. no wonder i was#intrigued. an old folklore reason to be alone. you know? and the old wives’ tales talk of salt water doing this or garlic doing that.#i don’t know. and even now somehow compared to other supernatural creatures you can modernise them. put them in dark corners in cityscapes#at three in the morning flitting and hunting. they’ve modernised like martin (1977)#was there a vampire story in the whitechapel tv series? that atmosphere too. in a long black coat at the end of the alley under a streetlamp#with my hair dyed black. column-pale and blinking at you#dracula
