Are YOU ready to suffer? Are YOU ready to listen to me rant and suffer and cry and giggle and throw my phone?
Well guess what? It's happening. All that and more because TODAY... is tfs tuesday (but it's actually a Thursday)
I have read the first two chapters of it but it's been a while and I haven't been able to do much reading recently SOOO today I'm to binge all of it cause guess what? It's winter break! I don't have to go to bed early for anything! Not school, not work, not my family's peace of mind, nothing. In fact it's two in the morning. (I have a teeny tiny migraine so I can't sleep, being awake rn is not necessarily my choice.) While I wait for the Tylenol to kick in so I CAN sleep, I'm gonna read this.
Let's get ready for pain and suffering on planet Earth. Or Mob. Planet Mob. PLANET TFST ALRIGHT DONE

explorers of arvus: heading back / 3.11.21
Tumblr media
zoom and enhonse
LAST TIME ON ARVUS taure passed out and we are now down a healer! also we met a disciple of halvkar, and surprisingly did not murder her. this is fine. we have instantly gotten distracted by our various carts. cats. our various cats
DID ANY OF US CATCH TAURE, SHE FELL OVER sieron tried to catch her and smacked charlie+thorne in the face (he rolled a nat1, f) BUT the catboy is to the rescue bc silje is the designated Not Incompetent of the group today
CONSULT THE CHILD hewwo yrel yrel: her mind is being consumed by the serpent of nightmares. :D charlie: HELLO?????//
so, dendar(?) the night serpent is imprisoned beneath arvus! she was formed from the nightmares of the first sentient being, and sometimes she eats people's nightmares. if she's exceptionally hungry, she'll force nightmares onto people for her to feed off their fear. yrel thinks taure will Probably wake up. there's a thing on arvus mentioned by the locals called a "sleeping sickness" where people will fall asleep for a few days, sometimes longer, but will wake up. its magical in cause, the people afflicted by it have horrific nightmares, and its just kinda. a thing. wowza
(i have gone back to spelling yrel's name as yrel bc i think it looks nice)
OH HEY SOMEONE POSTED A THEORY ON ONE OF MY STICKMOLUS ANIMATIONS man i should get back to stickmolus sometime. once dsmp releases its awful grip on me.
i keep getting distracted by seeing myself in the camera preview. i have a tooth gap! what the fuck its cute?? K I KNOW WE'RE SUPER BLURRY IN FRONT RN BUT PLEASE HELP ME STAY FOCUSED I SWEAR -leo

[discussion about what to tell everyone at camp vengenace] thorne: the last thing we need to do is a witch hunt charlie: --and we already hunted the witch! the witch has been hunted.
time to discuss strategy! we need to figure out how to head back to camp vengeance, eg if we want to follow the path we already took or if we wanna do some trailblazing. looks like we're gonna try and take the most direct path! which means we'll prolly risk tangoing with some undead but im willing to risk it TINY HUT STAIRCASE sorry i just remember it now and then
nyx: [meowing at his cats] thorne: uh... why is silje meowing? jorb: silje's food bowl is empty jorb: you look at silje's food bowl and there's a divot in the middle and the food is all on the sides emotionally, we must bully the catboy silje saw something interesting and started meowing
thorne: ill take first watch silje: ill also take first watch. charlie: [quietly] gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyy (but, like, extended for 15 seconds)
silje: [takes watch] [rolls a nat1 and gets distracted by looking at his crush]
Tumblr media

i am perceiving some deer. sieron is not perceiving some deer. silje is perceiving some deer, but better the deer are fucked up and undead! silje has gone from "we should hunt these deer for food" to "we should hunt these deer for sport"
charlie: i do not feel like being jumped by five thousand skeletons
charlie takes first watch with sieron! WHY ARE OUR ROLLS SO TERRIBLE taure is super cursed right now. that's not very pog charlie: this place sucks. thorne: to be fair, we havent-- charlie: YOU'RE ASLEEP, SHUT UP

Title : Say When Part VII
Previous Chapters | I | II | III | IV | V | VI
Pairing : Shouto Todoroki | Momo Yaoyorozu
Rated : T
It’s not something he expects, the odd churning feeling that leaves distaste in his mouth when they walk into something they obviously shouldn’t have seen. Momo has never been more flushed and begrudgingly he admits the color rather suits her.
He feels bothered and he doesn’t understand why. It’s not like Yaoyrozu and him are anything more than…friends. Logically, he knows it doesn’t make sense to get upset, but he can’t help it, not with his mark suddenly pulsing with irritation. It’s been a long time since he’s resented having the mark, but the feeling returns in the most spiteful way. Of course, even with all the odds in his favor, the one person he’d be slightly interested in would have no interest in him.
She appears mortified, as she should be, and she starts to apologize profusely like it’s her fault the group hadn’t had the decency to knock in the first place. Bakugou is uncharacteristically quiet, for once, which unsettles him even more. In fact, Bakugou is glaring at them with such a passion, its as if they would catch flame if he so willed it.
After a few unbearable moments of awkwardness, Momo manages to find a way to scurry away muttering about checking on Jirou and Hagakure, who should be wide awake by now.
As soon as the door closes behind her, Kirishima is the first to recover and sends a devilish smile to the blonde. “So, you and Yaomomo, huh?” Shouto wants to hurl.
Bakugou blanches in response and seem to regain the ability to speak, or snarl rather. “Fuck no!”
At this, Midoriya begins to laugh nervously and Iida begins to shift his gaze between the all aggressively.
“Something funny fucking, Deku? What the hell are you even doing here?” Bakugou snips causing the other poor boy to choke and Iida has pity on him and speaks up while patting his back.
“You can hardly blame us for jumping to conclusions. After all, we walked into you two in a compromising-“
“Compromising?! You’re all fucking retarded, someone get me outta this shit hospital, or I’ll end up killing my goddamn self.” Bakugou snarls as he moves to rip the iv out, fed up at the whole situation. Kirishima, Midoriya and even Iida all rush to keep the impulsive blonde down, but Todoroki doesn’t move, he hasn’t even spoken yet.
“Come on, no need to get so worked up! We believe you! I was just kidding” Kirishima tries to placate him while the other two nod enthusiastically causing Shouto to sigh in exasperation. “You got something you wanna say,you half-and-half prick?”
Shout is not phased in the slightest. “Not necessarily, no.”
Bakugou just scoffs. “Whatever. Listen idiots, I’m only gonna say this once. That was nothing, just little virtuous ponytail making sure I wasn’t dead; something about guilt. This better not leave this room or I swear-.”
His words do little to comfort Shouto but he only shrugs, determined not to care. Even if what Bakugou claimed was true, there was still explanation for the sight they walked into; Bakugou taking off his shirt and Yaoyorozu hovering extremely close to his skin.
It doesn’t matter, Yaoyorozu is her own person, Yaoyorozu can make her own decisions, Yaoyorozu can- Shouto suddenly excuses himself and swiftly walks out ignoring Bakugous calculating eyes. He goes to the bathroom and immediately runs cold water over his wrist. Not cold enough at first, he brings his right hand up to cool his throbbing skin.
There is a brief second where he wishes the mark had been on his right side so he could have just burned it off before banishing the stupid thought away in frustration.
 --
When Momo finally manages to retreat into Jirou’s room, she’s met with a face of mild amusement. It only serves to further fluster her even though there is no way her friend knows why she is all but burning up in embarrassment.
Mortified, absolutely mortified. As bad as it was to be caught in that predicament at all, Todoroki’s presence made it no better. In fact, it completely decimated her. She could not tell what would be worse; Todoroki feeling disappointed, or him feeling nothing at all.
“Do you want to talk about it?” Jirou asks after a moment. Even thought she can still see traces of amusement on her face, her voice is tender and fond. It’s tempting to tell her friend everything, but she only shakes her head and moves closer to her.
“How are you feeling?” Jirou smiles and points to a bag beside her hospital bed. “I was actually on my way to change. I’ve been set free!” To further emphasize this, she raises her arms to show her free of bandages, scratches or scars. Momo smiles in return feeling a pang of guilt for not being with her friend when she needed it.
“So, I heard you where apart of the ragtag that rescued Bakugou.” Jirou comments airily while making her way to the restroom to change out of the hospital gown she was currently donning. Momo’s cheeks blushed at the mention of the Bakugou and it unfortunately did not escape Jirou’s attention.
“Oh, we are totally talking about it.” Jirou announces before she shuts the door of the restroom leaving Momo to simmer in her never-ending dilemma. She glances over to the hospital bed with a sudden urge to crawl into it and hide.
Jirou doesn’t take long and when she comes out looking far more comfortable in her own clothes than the gown she was in earlier, Momo’s guilt resurfaces. “I apologize for not stopping by sooner, I’m a horrible friend.” She grimaces and Jirou waves her off and stretches lightly.
“Not from what I’ve heard.” Jirou begins, almost hesitantly. “You went out on a ballsy rescue, I’m not hurt about it.”
“We were lucky.” Momo admits and Jirou instantly makes a sound in agreeance. “I saw some of the fight on the screen with Hagakure and I have to say, I thought even All Might got lucky.”
Jirou chuckles at the look of remembrance and alarm that flashes on Momo’s faces before shaking her head at her friend. “Don’t worry about it, she was released yesterday she just kept me a bit of company.”
“I’m a horrible friend!” Momo groans as Jirou finishes packing her bag causing her to snort. “Stop it, you’re not! You were out there saving lives!” At Momo’s look of doubt, she continues while slinging her bag over her shoulder. “Honestly Momo, no one thinks ill of you. They needed you more anyway.”
“But I feel so…selfish.”Jirou rolls her eyes at her poor friend and drags her out of the room by the elbow. “Why? Did you ditch me for a boyfriend or something?” Jirou sniggers and Momo turns pink and thinks. ‘Or something.’
As they continue to walk through the hallways, she feels her mark itch and she decides to take it as a sign. “Jirou, can I ask you a question?”
Jirou glances at her friend in curiosity before nodding her head.
“How do you feel about your soul mark?”  Momo throws the question out before she can chicken out and Jirou all but trips over herself.
“I’m sorry, what?” Jirou breathes and Momo starts to think of the best way to pull back. “Uh,”
“Wait a minute, Momo you don’t think…” Jirou trails off while scrutinizing her as she decides to increase her pace. Jirou may not hold the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd spot in class in terms of academics, but she’s not at all dull. Especially when it comes to Momo. She pulls Momo to a stop by catching her wrist. “Who?”
Momo decides to avoid any sort of eye contact with her and scans the empty reception area before letting out a defeated sigh. “I don’t know.” She answers honestly.
“Well, we have plenty to talk about. Let’s walk to your house and pick up a change of clothes for you.” Jirou starts, pausing to think for a minute. “I mean you’re welcome to use my clothes, but I don’t think you’ll be comfortable in them…no offence.
“P-pardon?” Momo manages to stutter out and again she’s being dragged by her friend.
“You’re obviously staying over my house to bring me up to speed with what I’ve missed, which seems to be quite a bit. Honestly, I feel like I’m the real bad friend here.” Aside from her building anxiety, Momo allows herself to smile at her friend feeling extremely grateful to have her.
 --
After some time, Shouto makes his way back into Bakugou’s room only to find it empty, save for Bakugou himself who was angrily staring at the ceiling.
“Did they leave?” He asks, causing the blond to snort. “I fucking wish, went to stuff their faces with the disgusting slop this pace serves.”
Deciding not to make it more uncomfortable for himself, Shouto goes to excuse himself before Bakugou speaks up.
“You’re a fucking idiot.”
Shouto doesn’t expect it but frowns nonetheless. “Excuse me?”
Bakugou only huffs aggressively before finally looking down to look at Shouto. “You’re a fucking idiot, you’re worrying over nothing.”
In that moment, Shouto isn’t sure how to react, so he doesn’t. After a brief pause, he nods his head and turns to leave. “Feel better.”
Closing the door, he catches Bakugou muttering “What a pussy”, and decides that he really can’t stand him. Not one goddamn bit.
A/N: Todo catching those jealous feelings, finally- I know!

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening remake
-Note: It’s kind of embarrassing to admit but my comments around the visuals of A Link to the Past and Link’s Awakening are straight-up incorrect. The two games did not share the same visual style and I honestly don’t know why I said that; I most definitely knew better. Still, I’m not going to get rid of it because the internet needs more examples of people admitting to be being wrong.
I say a lot that I want to be positive, but it’s really gonna be hard with this one. See, at the latest Nintendo Direct it was announced that they would be releasing a remake of the 26 year old game, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. As it happens I was already considering writing something about this game in a “Games from my Childhood” article, but that would actually have been positive! This one is… well, I’m going to at least try and balance every negative with a positive.
Tumblr media
-at least the title screen looks good-
So where to begin: I won’t cover the story because spoilers but how about some personal background? The game came out a year before I did (ha! bad jokes) and I have no idea when I got my grubby little paws on it, but it was a part of my life genuinely for as long as I can remember, along with the Pokémon games. I never completed it as a child, but my memories of it were so good that I returned to it as an adult and completed it, learning its sad secret.
Tumblr media
-hey! according to this it released the same year I did; me getting my years mixed up I guess-
Link’s Awakening (LA) was originally a pet project made outside of work hours which is why it borrows resources from other games such as the Mario series, but it was eventually released to critical acclaim. The gameplay is much the same as its immediate predecessor A Link to the Past (LttP), but with a number of new items and a unique soundtrack. Visually it is much the same as well, although its original release was black and white for the GameBoy with Link’s Awakening DX adding colour for the GameBoy Colour.
So let’s start with the visuals as that is most of what we have right now: the original shared its visuals with LttP what with them using the same assets (tools, resources etc) and LttP had a sequel recently that looked really nice. But the upcoming LA remake looks nothing like it; I wouldn’t expect it to but when a defence of the artistic choice is that “it’s an update of the original graphics” (so why not use the assets from the LttP remake?) or that it somehow “reflects the atmosphere of the original” except there’s no reason for it to be any different to, again, the LttP remake. And in response to the “atmosphere”, LA was one of the darker yet in some ways more whimsical games; this new style is childish to the extreme.
Don’t get me wrong, I love something that is good and childish, but there is a level when it stops being great and starts to feel like they condescend to the player. Bright colours, simple faces, high pitched noises- Oh god the noises!! I’ll expand on the sounds later but I’m still on the visuals. I’ve heard the game described as looking like Claymation, which isn’t wrong, but my immediate thought was that it looked like cheap plastic. And after watching it again and again as I discussed it with a friend, this opinion stuck.
Tumblr media
-tell me this doesn’t look like claymation; this isn’t a game, it’s an animated short film-
You know how shiny and tacky cheap plastic usually looks? Imagine an entire game like that; an entire world like that. Fans of anime may understand what I say next, but there is a large element of “chibi” in this new game. Large head, tiny body. It’s often seen in short 4 minute spin offs of popular series.
Tumblr media
-as you can see, chibi is hardly meant to be taken seriously-
Tumblr media
-just to hammer things home-
So shiny plastic, silly chibi art with a soulless expression. Oh yeah, that. Link’s eyes have zero soul behind them. Zero. He’s a freakin’ monster. Have you seen those Funko Pops? You know how empty they look? Some have said it somehow reflects the original game’s art again, but back then they didn’t have the technology to make him look soulless and young me always thought he looked determined; it was really cool.
Tumblr media
-determined; dead inside-
Okay, so I said I would try and be fair, and I have shat upon the plasticine toy-box long enough, so here’s what is good visually. The areas are actually really nice.
Tumblr media
Ignoring the nail varnish sheen on everything, things are really detailed. There is an unfortunate trend in games, likely due to technical limitations, to have flat textures. Basically, imagine the difference between a tile or wood panel floor, and a picture of a tile or wood panel floor. But this game looks to have really tried in these areas. The grass looks thick and lush, tiles look like more than a photograph on the floor and even the flat flowers on the ground look decent. Just a shame it all looks like LEGO. Actually, a LEGO Zelda game would be awesome. But this is not that.
I haven’t explained that very well, it’s an area that I am new at but I will say that clearly a lot of care has gone into the assets and the world. It is not a lazy game in any way.
Tumblr media
-don’t tell me those trees and rocks and- well, everything, don’t look like LEGO-
Next I’m going to talk about the sound. First of all, I’m convinced that they have artificially increased the pitch of Link’s voice so it is painfully sharp to the ears. I’ll admit, I have an unusual sensitivity to lights and sound and thus I prefer darker colours and quieter sounds; I avoid clubs like the plague and not just because I’ll likely catch it there. So maybe, just maybe, I’m noticing something that won’t be a problem for most, and is just unfortunate for me. And let’s ignore that it doesn’t match the darker tone of the game.
And the music? Also quite high pitched. And super cheery. It doesn’t have either the dreamlike or dark tones that could be expected (and just thinking of how it could be dreamlike gives me shivers; it could be so good) but is instead inanely cheery. In fact, I hope they sped everything up for the trailer and the pitch is just an unfortunate side-effect.
On the plus side, the trailer opens with a cool cinematic and I swear the music changes from a nice, cheerful rendition (I don’t dislike cheerful in-and-of-itself) of the Zelda main theme to the death squeals of various instruments that I mentioned before. On top of that, it ends on a really nice vocal version of the LA theme, Ballad of the Wind Fish. If the trailer had been the cinematic and that closing song alone then I would be beyond excited about the remake. Thank heaven it wasn’t, I’m not sure my love of the series could survive such a plummeting disappointment.
youtube
-and here’s the actual trailer for your perusal-
So I’ll finish here. I was originally very pleased, excited even that they had decided to remake what was a favourite, underrated and apparently forgotten game, but I kept my expectations low because I knew what to expect from these companies. I thought I did anyway. I was still disappointed. I thought I had prepared for the worst. Still, at least it gave me something to write about.
But, the game has clearly had a lot of work put into it and gameplay-wise it actually looks to flow really well so I’m sure it controls like a treat. But the visuals and music are too big of a deal for me to let slide; if it keeps up like this then it could literally be painful for me to play. Still, games do change a lot from the initial trailer to its release and I even put forth an idea of why the sound may hurt me so much here. Maybe the final game will be a lot better. Unfortunately, the things I want to be done in games and such rarely are, and I am often alone in my complaints.
And finally, yes I am aware that the famous and incredibly popular Wind Waker entry in the series also had similar complaints and became, as I said, incredibly popular. I wasn’t a part of that crowd, I was too young and honestly, Link’s Awakening was the only Zelda game I had actually played at that time.

AHUH dead on, theyre going to be discarded pretty soon and then where will bp be? theyll prob go solo paths which is rlly sad but what can you do when the company is run by a prideful asshole? yg is not going to last much longer in the big four if they keep this up.

(sorry if youve said this before) mmmm yeah good decision, i feel liek thats probably a wise decision. this is my first album release as a kpop stan (not counting mixtape oh) so i think ill get it for sentiments sake. yeah! im excited for the new music! mingi was the one who got me into them, but atm my bias is seonghwa followed by san, wooyoung and ateez but jonghos high notes man *swoon* he, yeah atm ive got jake, jay, nikki, jungwon and sunoo down so just trying to get the rest :) heh, yeah kard i rlly only got into cos of bm, ive seen him like interacting with a lot of idols and he seemed nice so i decided to check out the group. ikr gunshot man *another swoon*
no noe! i didnt know what it was until i got it lol. thx toffee ill try and take that to mind :) yeah lol im on a waiting list thats not going to be free until late september so hopefully i can hold on until then. hope ur okay, that sounds like it sucks, hope you can find someone. maybe ill just take you along on my phone and the therapist can get a two for one patient deal lmaooo. mmm, sorry no i havent mentioned it before, i dont rlly talk abt it much. uhhh basically hypermobility? if you google it, it doesnt seem bad, jsut joint flexibility but ive got the severe end of the stick, leaning towards ehlers danlos syndrome so thats fun. basically it just makes it hard for me to exercise, run, jump, stand or just walk for long periods of time and gives me a lot of joint and muscle pain so... thats fun! but obviously so many other people have it worse than me, so i try not to complain. normally in young people it will improve as they get older, but my doctor said bc its severe in me, its unlikely to get much better. but again, i dont have the worst lot in the bunch, so its all g.
oh its good that its not the bad type of rain, a light sprinkling can be relaxing sometimes. aww thx darl, the concern is appreciated but it went pretty well and i managed not to cough too much on stage or kill myself trying to run around to the other side of the stage in the pouring rain so thats good! oooh tea buddies! my dogs a labradoodle, but shes a bit more of a feral poodle lol not much labrador in her at all, unless its her relentless urge to hunt down every bird that has ever walked this earth smh :((( hopefully they can come back on soon, does uni have dances?
ahhh a mood if i ever heard one. hopefully things will get better for you soon, ik anxiety sucks ass. ooh thats always good! when its sunny here, its always melt ur thongs to the pavement hot so the nicely cool sunny days are a lovely change. hehe impatience is not so good for you, but good for us that get to see ur beautiful theme early. ahh no worries, itll come eventually hopefully. and if not, then just things that make you not anxious are good. it doesnt have to be black or white, sometimes gray is good. mmmmm sames i have midterms this week to catch up on and then two weeks of end of terms so thats fun! i hope u can overcome that a little, heres some channie to be ur motivation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8LWyNjzOww. hah! i hear that all the time, he seems to be everywhere. did you see that tiktok of hans slowed back door rap, i stg it sounded EXACTLY like namjoon, it kinda scared me. also teh beginning of another day, sounds so much like joon i swear.
that reminds me! idk ur biases! i feel like this should be smth i should know so please! feel free to elaborate!
ahh im glad, i was worried it is. mmm same, so no hard feelings if either of us misses a day or smth. ill start worrying if weeks/months have gone by, but if its just a little while thats more than fine. ill just picture you studiously completing notes and i wont worry lol
<3 w.a. 🐺
at some point i really think i'm going to start blocking accounts because blocking tags won't be enough. i saw ask tags the other day and it just made me want to bleach my eyeballs.
i could talk about god's menu felix for hours man. the teaser for god's menu that featured his part on the bridge made me look forward to the mv release. you: biases chan, also you: lixiesbabyhands. yes you are more whipped than you think. i can't believe orange haired minho was given NOTHING during that era but they kind of made up for it in the b-sides. i also hope it stays that way. the distribution for this era was pretty fair.
"torturing another poor character's soul" in all honesty, i used to live for this. 2017 me leading up to early 2020 wrote nothing but angst. i have another aussie friend on twt and tbh i'm still really (O.o) about the seasons! jyp should be terrified skz could easily take over that company. heck if skz grow old and start their own company, they'd probably do a great job at running it. PLEASE. i have issues on muting/notifications both mentally and in real life. sometimes, i just wish to disappear.
some people in my country are just disgusting tbh. not only racist but homophobic too. they label kpop as 'gay' and it DISGUSTS me. it's a problematic behavior/mindset people in my country need to fucking get rid of. anyway, HELP ME 6 MONTHS??? and i've been in this shit for like a decade eye. tbh, i’m not fond of kpop groups trying to appeal to the western audience :// it feels like they’re losing their identity in a way. yes recognition but at what cost? yg has my favorite groups but that’s one shitty company when it comes to promoting.
okay my ult! it’s haechan from nct but i consider chan an ult too. like a close second above my whopping list of kpop boys. oh yes! you should get the album just for like a keepsake? remembrance? how did mingi appeal to you? omg did you start getting interested in ateez back when he was still on hiatus? NOT YOU BIASING THE SAME PEOPLE I DID WHEN I FIRST STARTED STANNING. the infamous ateez thot-line. jongho is easily one of the best fourth gen vocalists out here, no one can change my mind :( good luck with memorizing the rest of enhypen! just in time for the comeback too. i hope i’ll get into kard soon but i’m pretty content (and a tad bit overwhelmed) with the amount of groups i stan right now.
please hold on though, feel free to vent here if you like. thanks for the offer tho HAHA but like i’ll try to get checked here too when the cases die down a bit. i’m sorry to hear about your condition though :( please don’t ever overwork yourself to the point that your joints/muscles would ache. it’s completely valid to complain about it tho. i get that you have others in mind but keeping that mindset really doesn’t do you (like you internally) any better? so if you need to, vent your frustrations out and don’t keep it in.
oh my god, about your performance last sunday. was the stage out in the open? glad you didn’t cough too much and did well on your concert. i’m proud of you! i can never understand dogs and poor birds T_T uni doesn’t have dances unfortunately. i think there’s just one party at the end like a graduation ball. what year are you in anyway? if it’s something that you’re fine with sharing. if not, it’s cool.
good luck with your exams! and thanks for the link! AHA what a cutie. i think he does this motivation thing once in a while during his lives and it’s just comforting. yeah joon and han my irl just freaked when we made that discovery. ult crumbs for her. oh god not me forgetting about every biases when you asked. you can ask for my biases in a few groups just list down the one’s you’re interested in knowing.
i missed yesterday because i was grinding and finishing what if we stay + school work. finally did it today. i’m sure i’ll reply in like a day or two, definitely not a month unless i state otherwise. if i ever decide to abandon this blog, i’ll let you know.

Which Alternative Cold and Flu Remedies Actually Work?
Sneeze in a room full of family, friends, or coworkers, and you're bound to receive buckets of unsolicited cold and flu remedies people swear by—assuming they haven't put on their gas masks and run away.
Given the ineffectiveness of this year's flu vaccine (although it’s still worth getting—here’s why) and that forever-elusive "cure for the common cold," many of us have found ourselves turning to some combination of Grandma's home remedies, health food stores, and integrative health specialists for help. But even as we're meticulously dosing ourselves with vitamins and herbs, we'll be reading the latest headlines about scientific studies indicating it's all snake oil.
EDITOR'S PICK
Who should we believe? Is there a Big Pharma conspiracy out there, or are alternative medicines just another product in a for-profit system? If I think my favorite homeopathic cold medicine makes me feel better... can't I just trust my anecdotal experience?
"I don't think mainstream medicine is looking to be proactive," says Deepa Verma, M.D., AIHM, an integrative health physician, says of the mainstream approach to cold and flu viruses. "They're reactive—they just wait for things to happen and then treat it. That's what I was taught in med school."
Natasha Bhuyan, M.D., the district medical director of One Medical in Phoenix, Arizona, explains that unfortunately, money often plays a role in whether traditional doctors recommend alternative medicine.
"Doctors can't often endorse these treatments as there is a lack of trials and research on them," she says. "This is simply because funding a research trial is super expensive. It would be amazing if there were a lot more funding support for alternative treatments."
In many instances, alternative treatments may be as effective—perhaps more effective—than mainstream approaches. However, these treatments generally don’t receive the same kind of funding for high-quality clinical trials, so we can’t know for sure about their efficacy.
Where Science and Integrative Health Agree
Verma bases her practice on her own analysis of published research—and most of what she prescribes for her patients revolves around boosting their immune systems.
One of the supplements she recommends for immune system health is vitamin D (yeah, you may have thought we were going to say C—we'll get to that surprisingly controversial vitamin later).
"I live in Florida, and the number of people who are vitamin D deficient here is staggering—so you can imagine what it's like in people in the Northeast or Midwest," she says. "Studies have shown that vitamin D is very powerful in boosting immunity and preventing cancer, and also helping with a host of other things like heart disease, obesity, and diabetes."
Because the FDA doesn't regulate what goes into supplements, Verma said the best bet for patients is to get pharmaceutical-grade supplies straight from an integrative health specialist, naturopathic doctor, or other medical professional. She often administers her supplements via IV, so the active ingredients bypass the digestive system and enter the bloodstream in purer forms.

Verma also relies on established knowledge about how our immune systems sometimes fail us. The thymus gland, for instance, is where the body produces disease-fighting T-cells, but it naturally atrophies with age. An age-old remedy for treating the gland involves consuming the thymus glands of calves, and some current studies support this practice in the form of a supplement, which is derived from the same source but thankfully doesn’t involve actually snacking on a literal thymus gland.
The liver produces the antioxidant glutathione (GHS), which helps us fight infections but depletes naturally as we age. Reduced levels of GHS are associated with upper respiratory tract issues. In hospitals, when patients have overdosed on Tylenol, they’re given N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC), a glutathione precursor, to replenish their GHS. Studies have shown that NAC has also helped HIV patients and postmenopausal women improve their immune function, and some studies have shown it to be effective in fighting influenza. That’s why Verma often administers glutathione infusions after an IV.
Elderberry, aka sambucus nigra, also appears promising. This plant (when processed to eliminate naturally occurring cyanide) has antiviral properties and has been shown in multiple trials to be moderately effective in preventing people from catching the flu and colds, and failing that, in shortening their length.
Bhuyan is optimistic about Pelargonium sidoides, an ingredient in Umcka, a common natural cold medication. "There have been two fairly good randomized studies that show this can reduce the severity of symptoms of the common cold and acute bronchitis," she says.
"This is an herb that has been widely used in South Africa and Europe. Early lab studies show it has antibacterial and antiviral properties, in addition to giving your immune system a boost. However, in medicine, we are always seeking more evidence (i.e., multiple, super-strong trials with thousands of patients). But I still recommend this, as it's safe to use and has good early data."
Remedies Science Isn't So Sure About
Headlines about the efficacy of vitamin C fluctuate about as much as those for red wine, eggs, and coffee. The latest verdict from the National Institutes of Health on vitamin C is that it's an important antioxidant, and adults should consume about 75-90 mg a day, preferably from food. But they say it's not the miracle cure for colds and flu.
"There are fascinating studies on vitamin C," Bhuyan says. "A large analysis of 29 trials showed a small reduction in the duration of cold symptoms, but only in adults taking regular vitamin C (200 mg a day). It didn't really show a benefit for people who start taking it when they feel a cold coming on."
The results have been similarly disappointing for echinacea and colds. But when you go to the research on the immune system, both vitamin C and echinacea seem to do some good work. That's the research Verma pays attention to when she formulates her IV fluids in a combination called Myers' Cocktail, after a doctor who developed the method in the 1960s. When someone comes into her office feeling cold or flu symptoms, she typically uses about 25 grams of vitamin C, plus trace minerals, B vitamins, and glutathione.
"I take all those articles and I just compare them," she tells Greatist of what she does if the latest studies cast some inconclusive doubt on certain supplements. "I look at how the research was done. If they're inconclusive, I just do more research. If I can pull more articles that are saying it's more beneficial than not, then to me, that works. When I'm doing these treatments with my patients, I do check in on them a few days later, or they send me a text or email and tell me they're better or didn't come down with the flu."
After administering her Myers’ IV, Verma sends her patients home with echinacea, thymus extract, and two more ingredients with ambiguous science behind them: medicinal mushrooms and astragalus root.
The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) says the research on Chinese herbal remedy astragalus is sparse and poorly conducted—which doesn’t mean that astralagus isn’t a good supplement, it just means we don't know yet. Studies on various medicinal mushrooms seem quite positive so far—particularly in terms of its antiviral properties in the face of influenza—but very few have been conducted. As Bhuyan notes, it seems there just hasn't been enough money used to look into these naturally available ingredients.
What No One Is Recommending: Homeopathic Medicines
Coldcalm and Oscillococcinum are two brand-name homeopathic medicines widely available in stores. I load up on them every time I feel like I'm getting sick, and I feel like they keep me healthy or shorten my illnesses. But there's a huge chance that's all in my head.
A review of six studies of Oscillococcinum, which is derived from duck heart and liver but diluted down to one percent, found that the only evidence that this treatment shortens the flu came from a possibly biased study. The idea behind homeopathy—that an almost undetectable amount of a thing that's similar to what is making you sick will activate your body to get well—has been met with a lot of criticism, and manufacturer Boiron has been sued for its claims. At the same time, Bhuyan doesn't tell people not to use it.
"It's up to the patient if they want to use this product and spend the money," she says. The benefit of this medicine might be (read: probably is) a placebo effect, which is another way of saying that our minds can make us feel better too—at least a little bit.
"There is definitely validity to the placebo effect," Verma says. "When you think of something, it can manifest. That's why we encourage people to do meditation and think positive thoughts. When you have positive thoughts, you're releasing chemicals into your body that boost your immunity. That mental aspect goes hand-in-hand with the physical aspect. But your thoughts only go so far."
How Can We Make These Decisions?
Read up! Most of this research is available online, after all.
"Patients should feel empowered to read medical studies themselves and discuss them with their doctors," Bhuyan says. "When reading a medical study, here a few questions to ask yourself: Who funded this study and could there be some bias? Is the study well-designed, with enough patients and a control group? Were the end results actually meaningful to my life?"
Sure, these make for dry reading on a sick day—but you can always balance it out with a few hours of streaming Riverdale.
