twst notes 🖋
uh so this is an unorganized/out-of-order mix of some of my thoughts abt twst so far + also things I’m just preserving bc I’m going to forget them otherwise💦 more will be added later probably!!
Tumblr media
The nickname Grim & Yuu came up with for Malleus: Tsuno Taro (basically,, “John Horns”)
Just the fact that Deuce actually owns pink leopard print clothing??
Okay, Daijobu, Relax~!
Cater doesn’t like sweets…. Noted for our dates
Ace likes cherry pie and hamburgers
Grim → tuna, cheese omelets, grilled meat, and pudding
Deuce → omurice
Cater → lamb chops with diablo sauce
Ruggie’s averse reaction to Grim calling him “Deluxe Menchi Katsu Sandwich” bc it’s “delicious-sounding” ….. hits hard when u remember how Savanaclaw is related to that whole Circle of Life thing 😭
Is it just me or do the only really bitchy characters seem to be the background characters–
Yuu’s dialogue options are sometimes cute as shit or rlly fcking funny and uGH I love them
Words cannot describe how much I love all Ace/Deuce interactions too
Ace and Deuce only willing to help Yuu catch a truant Grim if Yuu promises to buy them food from the cafeteria (Ace wanted a chocolate croissant, Deuce wanted a caffe latte)
Deuce summoned his inner Bad Boy when those Heartslabyul bullies made him drop his egg cartons bc he thought those eggs had had chicks in them,, and started threatening them to apologize to the chicks they’d “murdered”…. then when Yuu explained nothing had died he spent like the whole time when everyone was making that marron tart having an identity crisis
When Trey explained that his secret ingredient in tarts is “oyster sauce,” and that all famous patisseries use it, I deadass spent like 5 min googling it to see if this was true 🤡 (it’s not) (he was kidding) (im dumb)
Then Riddle made his punishment tart with oyster sauce!!!!! I’m soft.
Riddle fixing Yuu’s tie for them had me feeling things 😳
Cater reassuring Yuu that he’d protect them if Jack tried to bite at them also had me feeling things 😳😳
Jack breaking into our dorm during his morning jog to make sure we wake up for the magift event??? 🙌 dreams do come true
Seriously tho Jack appeared on screen 1 time and suddenly I had plans to marry him, move out of the country, and have 38 babies
Crowley logic: hmmm several students have been getting mysteriously injured lately…. maybe I should have my singular non-magical (and therefore technically weakest) student investigate
Also Crowley logic: Students break his chandelier??? EXPELLED. But Leona takes part in a plan to KO all his potential magift rivals by sending Ruggie to go abracadabra them down the stairs, makes a deal with Azul to get some shady overpowering magic potion, has Ruggie drink said potion so he can send an entire crowd of people stampeding towards Malleus, then turns on Ruggie and almost breaks his arm, and finally gets so pissed off that he can’t be the best that he overblots ??? “I’ll just disqualify him from the tournament.” BOI—–
So what even was that black stone Grim ate?? That was the overblotted remains of Leona’s magical pen gem right?? So like does Leona not have a gem anymore?? But he must, right?? So wtf did Grim eat??
Malleus being all mysterious & edgy on his midnight walk outside the ramshackle dorm & Yuu’s internal thoughts after meeting him was like “god this place is just full of weirdos” 👏
Grim bringing Trey a get-well tuna can was rlly sweet lmao 😭💕
So, in terms of family:
Ace usually talks about his older brother and his grandma
Deuce rlly loves his mom
Cater seems to hate his older sister
Riddle has an intense kyoiku mom 🔪
Leona is iffy & jealous & resentful of his older brother, and annoyed by Cheka but I bet he’s actually soft for him
Neither of Epel’s parents could use magic, but his grandma and great-grandma were witches
Unique Magic
Riddle: Off with your Head! / 首をはねろ!
Cater: Split Card / 舞い散る手札 (Fluttering Hand of Cards)
Trey: Doodle Suit / 薔薇を塗ろう (Paint the Roses)
Leona: King’s Roar / 王者の咆哮
Ruggie: Laugh with Me /愚者の行進 (Parade of Fools)
Jack: Unleash Beast / 月夜を破る遠吠え (Moonlight-Piercing Howl)
Jade: Shock the Heart / かじりとる歯 (Gnawing Teeth)
Floyd: Bind the Heart / 巻きつく尾 (Coiling Tail)
Azul: It's A Deal / 黄金の契約書 (Golden Contract)

Kim Jae Wook - Actor Spotlight
June 5, 2019 by misvictrix [Soompi]
Tumblr media
Kim Jae-wook is in this week’s spotlight, but he hardly needs an introduction. His recent drama Her Private Life, where he starred opposite Park Min-young, is quickly becoming a cult favorite — and yep, both their performances were fantastic. As the drama has just wrapped up (nooo!), it seems like a good time to take a look at Kim Jae-wook’s acting career.
Born in 1983 in Seoul, South Korea, Kim Jae-wook’s career had an early start in 2002 with a small role in the MBC drama Ruler of Your Own World. He was young at the time, and apparently didn’t enjoy the acting experience. Instead, he focused on his modeling career for many years. When Kim Jae-wook finally returned to the small screen, it was with a supporting role in two now-classic dramas: Dal Ja’s Spring and Coffee Prince.
Although those dramas (especially the latter) should have been enough to guarantee his success, it hasn’t been till recently that he’s starting to get the recognition he deserves. After Her Private Life, he’s definitely at a great point in his career. Quick, make us more dramas!
Here are some dramaland moments from Kim Jae-wook, followed by his full filmography.
Tumblr media
Who Are You (2013)
I’m not quite sure how I got through all of this drama. I don’t like creepy tales, and I especially don’t like poorly written creepy tales. However, I have a soft spot for Taecyeon, and tvN, so it seemed like a good idea at the time. Little did I know that this drama would be my introduction to Kim Jae-wook (*choir of angels*). It’s not exactly easy to steal an entire drama when you don’t even have a single line of dialogue — but Kim Jae-wook sure pulled it off. In Who Are You Kim Jae-wook played the wrongfully-murdered beloved of So Yi-hyun’s heroine. She was haunted/visited by him (depending on how you look at it, I guess) and it’s just a testament to his acting that his character was able to have the impact he did. White as a sheet, more silent than any Jang Ki-yong role, and not even doing much but standing there, Kim Jae-wook’s compelling screen presence held this drama together. Thank you.
Tumblr media
Temperature of Love (2017)
In the face-off of Yang Se-jong and Kim Jae-wook, who can ever win the heart of the heroine? Truthfully, this drama was about much more than its love triangle — in fact, the love triangle was one of the weakest elements. It’s also one of the rare dramas where my perennial second lead syndrome was shelved (it’s a good drama practice to shelve that painful emotion from time to time). In Temperature of Love, Kim Jae-wook was cold, rich, and completely taken with Seo Hyun-jin’s screenwriting heroine. Though I didn’t love how the triangle/tension played out in moments, I never doubted the authenticity of his character’s emotions. Kim Jae-wook was also a nice foil for Yang Se-jong, who seemed extra young and chipper next to the suave businessman with the power to make or break the people around him.
Tumblr media
Her Private Life (2019)
I loved the thought of Kim Jae-wook and Park Min-young starring together, but wasn’t really sure what to expect out of this drama… and boy have I been pleasantly surprised! I’m one of the first people to get drama fatigue over rom-coms with no personality — luckily, Her Private Life has not only personality, but pizzazz, super duper chemistry, and yeah, it’s also hilarious. Kim Jae-wook is great in this role, and it’s such a better character for him than the somewhat (conceptually) similar role he played in Temperature of Love. Here, he gets to have so much more fun, not only because he’s actually in the leading role, but because the script, thankfully, gives him more to do than just be a cold, smitten boss. Not that he doesn’t rock cold and smitten too.

Kim Jae-wook’s full filmography:
Ruler of Your Own World (2002) [Drama]
Kim Jae-wook made his acting debut with a side role in this Lee Na-young and Yang Dong-geun drama, but apparently had a bad time filming, and wasn’t sure about pursuing acting.
Dal Ja’s Spring (2007) [Drama]
Though many were blinded by Lee Min-ki when they watched this drama, Kim Jae-wook had an important (for his career, not really the drama) side role here as Lee Min-ki’s friend. Importantly, this drama was his return to the small screen after a 5-year break.
Coffee Prince (2007) [Drama]
I love long-haired Kim Jae-wook. That is all.
Antique (2008) [Film]
Comedy film based on a Japanese manga about a bakery that starred Joo Ji-hoon, Yoo Ah-in, Choi Ji-ho, and Kim Jae-wook, and got a good bit of acclaim.
Kingdom of the Wind (2008) [Drama]
Kim Jae-wook had a side role in this epic historical drama that told the story of several figures from the Three Kingdoms period.
Pygmalion’s Love (2010) [Drama]
Having grown up in Japan (he spent 7 years there), Kim Jae-wook has a great command of Japanese and it’s helped his career a lot. This short Japanese drama with Kim Joon and Minamisawa Nao is just one example.
Heart of Gold (2010) [Film]
Kim Jae-wook and Hong Kong actress Janice Man starred in this web-released movie about a Koream artist who travels to Japan.
Bad Guy (2010) [Drama]
No matter how bad the hero is, or how bad the plot is, this melodrama is one I want to watch. In addition to Kim Jae-wook, this drama starred Kim Nam-gil, Han Ga-in, Oh Yeon-soo, and Jung So-min.
Mary Stayed Out All Night (2010) [Drama]
This rom-com starred Moon Geun-young, Jang Geun-seok, and Kim Jae-wook and hit some hairy behind-the-scenes drama. In-drama drama was more about love, marriage, and forging marriage certificates.
Save Me (2010) [Film]
Short art film with Kim Jae-wook and Kim So-yi as a couple with a weird hobby.
Who Are You (2013) [Drama]
Getting ghosted by a ghost has never looked so good (see above).
Age of Feeling (2014) [Drama]
Unfortunately, Kim Jae-wook met with more behind-the-scene drama while shooting this ill-fated Kim Hyun-joong historical drama, and left mid-show after its writer swap.
4teen (2014) [Drama/Cameo]
Kim Jae-wook played the adult version of one of the leads in this two-episode drama special about a group of fourteen-year-olds.
Sweet Temptation (2015) [Web Drama]
I’m not sure how Kim Jae-wook wound up in this series of short dramas written for the members of T-ara, but he did.
Planck Constant (2015) [Film]
This art film starred Kim Jae-wook in the lead and chronicled his odd and/or erotic fetishes.
Two Rooms, Two Nights (2016) [Film]
Kim Jae-wook starred as a popular movie director who tried to keep two girlfriends going simultaneously. I’m not sure if we’re supposed to sympathize with him or not? Because I’m not.
The Last Princess (2016) [Film]
Sohn Ye-jin starred in this historical film as the last princess of Korea, and Kim Jae-wook was the Japanese nobleman who married her.
Voice (2017) [Drama]
The first of OCN’s Voice dramas made a big splash, and Kim Jae-wook got a lot of attention for his role in this Jang Hyuk and Lee Hana drama.
Temperature of Love (2017) [Drama]
It might not be perfect but I really enjoyed this drama — and the wonderful cast: Yang Se-jong, Hyun Seo-jin, Kim Jae-wook, and Jo Boa (see above).
Butterfly Sleep (2018) [Film]
Kim Jae-wook starred with Miho Nakayama in this Japanese film about a writer with Alzheimer’s who met a younger Korean man (Kim Jae-wook).
God’s Quiz: Reboot (2018) [Drama/Cameo]
Kim Jae-wook had a cameo in the final episode of the latest/fifth installment of this series about a medical examiner’s office.
Her Private Life (2019) [Drama]
Lion Ryan Gold. Yes, yes, all the YES (see above).
Tumblr media
BONUS: I read somewhere that Kim Jae-wook loves to clean and sometimes cleans for 4-5 hours at a time. I just needed to share that information.

Fruits Basket,Se03, Ep 9 (part 2)
This ep hits the feels simply cuz  we’re finally in tohru’s head! It shows tohru’s skill of reaching ppl’s hearts, not jst within furuba’s world but the viewers as well. However, while the emotion buttons were hit with tears, outbursts, suspense with the knife & cliff looming all over akito/tohru scenes, then tohru’s fall, fear of her death, another surge of emotions when kyo finally kissed her after their tragic encounter last ep, sth is still missing. For me personally, while the feels were 100%, the writing wasn’t.
-Minor writing Issues with akito/tohru’s “ face off leading to connecting moment”:
The akito/tohru scenes were more designed for the audience feel tohru’s pain more than for akito to connect with tohru. We were in tohru’s head more than listening to these two girls talk. That’s why the emotions hit us & we cried cuz we were listening to tohru’s heartbreaking monologue abt leaving her mom & hear her fear of being lonely without her mom. The heartbreaking visuals were all in tohru’s head. Akito didn't hear or see that. What akito heard was few sentences. Perhaps it is due to not having enough time to cover deeper dialogue between the girls, but akito was supposed to change her entire character, feels, demeanor, with one short dialogue. Tohru was talking to herself most of the time akito was facing her, the actual dialogue between the two was so short & touched upon their similarities briefly. Off course, akito slapping tohru multiple times was needed to indicate that “ look we know akito wont be won by tohru’s sincere words just like that on the spot, we’ll add slaps, multiple slaps to convey that it is logical that akito would refuse tohru’s words initially”. Unfortunately, once again furba uses violence to bridge gaps. tohru standing there weakly taking beating is such a bad taste that it bugs me that ppl are labeling it “ connecting”. I get that akito saw that tohru is after all similar to her & it led her to change, but it was done so quickly that we saw a peaceful, embarrassed, sincere smiling akito at the end of the ep. A new akito.
Furuba has this tendency to take long time building up dramatic character struggle & fix it in 5 or 8 minutes of the eps 20 min running time. The tools are: dramatic confrontation in a climactic style. Nothing is wrong with the tools themselves. They’re excellent story telling techniques, but the falling action is where the author’s skill at. Write drama & climax & raise the heart beat with suspense & emotions but the following consequences is what makes or breaks what you do. The ep needed to warp up akito’s realization for atonement so next eps will show her taking actual steps towards that. It also needed to wrap up kyo/tohru confrontation, so one of the two goals suffered on behalf of the other. kyo/tohru was established in the earlier ep, so it didnt suffer when it was wrapped, but akito/tohru is new thing brought in this ep only & was supposed to signal a new change! the villain getting redeemed. it worked in the emotions department, lots of ppl cried, but I felt it’s a bit weakly written. wished the girls “connected” by talking more before akito extended her hand. Oh well~ it is minor.
-Atonement vs forgiveness:
Akito is seeking atonement. Fixing her mistakes which means she’ll apologize to those whom she wronged & won’t repeat the horrible path of abuse. Atonement doesn't necessarily mean forgiveness. No one is obligated to forgive her just cuz she changed. Anyone who was bulled or abused understands how hard it is to accept the nightmarish past & move on, & look to see your bully/abuser doing well & has become a good person. It sucks to feel, “ oh so, I’m part of ur learning journey towards being a good person? Glad I could help in u realizing abusing ppl is bad, have a good time being good, me? I’m nursing my wounds & dealing with my nightmares that u caused, I’m doing way better now, but the wounds wont disappear”. Ppl might pressure you to forgive them cuz it’s the “ right thing” to do since it will help the abuser stay in the “ good” path. However, only YOU can choose how to respond. Only you can decide if forgiving them is helping u to cope or not. You dont even need to be part of their “ healing journey”. Focus on yourself  & live. Seek happiness & understand that sadness is part of the deal.
On the other side, if you were once a bully or an abuser, regardless of what made you choose such a path: an horrible trauma, being wronged yourself or simply not knowing better, you gotta understand that you might not be forgiven. It is ok if you weren’t. It is the other ppl’s right. Focus on yourself. Become a better person, work to fix the mistakes, ask forgiveness & be understanding of whatever response you might receive & move on. There is nothing else you can do. You cant spend your life waiting to hear the liberating words of “ i forgive you”. Those ppl you abused weren’t  liberated becuz of you for a long time, so it is understandable. Just focus on doing what you can to better yourself, atone, fix what can be fixed & live. Seek happiness & understand that sadness is part of the deal.
I like how akito embodies this themes of Atonement vs forgiveness, I just wish it was done with nice pace~ man! Now I’m really annoyed at the filler eps in se01 & 2! XD..-_-’’
-Again: don’t become the foolish traveler:
I cant say this enough. Tohru & kureno are the poster for kindness is an amazing virtue but don’t over do it.  You shouldn’t put yourself in danger & die like the foolish traveler. There is a reason both tohru & kureno are in the hospital & the author is doing a good job explaining that. Akito’s knife that deliberately went deep into kureno’s body, could have cut tohru by sheer panic & anxiety. Be kind but preserve yourself, too. Momiji said it. kind ppl exist & those who took advantage of them do exist as well. Still you can be kind. Reach out to ppl, but above all be kind to yourself<3
Side Notes:
I get that a yuki/kyo confrontation must happen to mirror tohru/akito. From enemies to buddies/friends/not enemies/ cool with each other. I just hope against all hopes that the drama is toned down a bit. But whom am I kidding? furuba has a history of running like a loose bull! >_<...fine! I’ll change my wish, I hope that kyo’s “ making a turn” from his tragic past & choosing better path is done better than akito’s, as in with “ enough time within furuba’s world, not necessarily multiple eps”.
Guessing who will forgive akito from the wronged zodiacs? I already know yuki, hatori & kureno had forgiven her. I want kisa to be spared from all this delima. Kyo’s entire trauma is abt seeking forgiveness, so I can see him forgiving her. I wouldn't be surprised if there were future kyo/akito encounters due to thoru befriending akito! would love to see that! As for Isuzu, the character who got the most severe abuse ( attempted murder) from akito, I can see her refusing this. Why should she care that akito is now “good”? From her perspective: screw akito! I saw death! nothing is wrong with such perspective from a helpless victim.
This ep is where akito & tohru’s Japanese VA shined the most, but kyo’s Japanese VA didnt have the right to steal their crown with his broken voice upon seeing near-dead tohru!! I wasnt even focused on him! but his voice stabbed me harsher than akito;s knife in kureno’s body! What a performance!!! It gave me chills! I’ve always said kyo’s English & Japanese VAs are good. but that moment, kyo’s Japanese VA delivered beyond comparison! well-done!
I’m still holding on shigure’s character analysis. Gotta wait for the bigger picture. but boy, he’s so grey.
The studio ditched akito’s lean boyish design & opted for a girlish design with lots of lashes, cute runs & girl stye of sitting on the bench. ok, cool. but I hoped akito stayed the same in her design even if she decided to acknowledge being a woman. Not all girls are feminine? they could've kept her the same. She spent i duno 20sth years walking & carrying herself a certain way, Now, tohru changed her, so even her style is different?
Also, It seems I need to give up on my pathetic conclusion that yuki will chang his “ akito-like” hair style! XD. That was a nice theory, ok?XD. I mean having a different hairstyle from ur abuser whom u spent ur childhood with is liberating! but I guess... anime is anime.. T_T. they can become grandparents & still same hair! lol !
Momiji is kind but he is NO foolish traveler. He didnt solely let go of his mom, sister, & tohru cuz he’s blindly kind nor cuz it is the best option for them. He considered & respected the other person’s emotions, desires & stance. He acknowledged & respected that his mom didn’t need him in her life, that his sister needs to grow a bit older before choosing to connect with her, that tohru isn’t a toy he & kyo fight for & he just give back to kyo cuz he’s a gentleman. No, tohru’s feelings matter & her choice is hers. He also didn’t blindly forgive akito nor brush her cruelty or quickly accept her. He stood up with judgemental looks, disapproving of her, waited to hear her sincere guilt, then approached her with wisdom & advice. Momiji is the best example of moderate kindness.

Your Wednesday Morning Roundup
The Phillies won’t finish the season with 100 losses. Another small good thing in a pretty bad season.
They defeated the Washington Nationals 4-1 thanks to a two-run double by Cameron Rupp in the third inning. Starter Jake Thompson had a strong outing, going five innings and giving up one run on four hits while striking out five. The Phillies’ bullpen struck out nine in four innings of work.
Record-wise, this season was worse than last year’s 71-91 record, but there have been plenty of bright spots to show the near future. Ever since the arrival of Nick Williams in July, the team has started to become somewhat watchable. Will this change in 2018? I hope. But there’s still plenty of work that needs to be done.
Phils and Nats go at it one final time in 2017 tonight at 7:05. Mark Leiter Jr. goes for Philadelphia, while Tanner Roark opposes him for Washington.
The Roundup:
The best thing I read yesterday was Philly.com’s wonderful article of the oral history of the 2007 Phillies’ regular season finale.
Aaron Nola’s numbers have quietly been some of the best in baseball, from Ryan Lawrence of Philly Voice:
The fact that we’re in the final week of the 2017 season and talking about where Nola ranks among baseball’s best pitchers is somewhat remarkable given where we were a year ago, or even just six months ago with the 24-year-old right-hander. Nola missed the final two months of the 2016 season with an elbow injury and no one was still quite sure what to expect when he began making regular turns in the Grapefruit League back in March.
It’s safe to say Nola has quieted the pessimistic critics. And it’s also fair to say that Mackanin has been more than pleased to have a pitcher like Nola slotted anywhere in his rotation going into 2018.
While Rhys Hoskins is in a home run drought, Nick Williams is currently in a hit drought.
The Eagles brought back a familiar face in Kenjon Barner to replace Darren Sproles on a one-year deal. Barner recorded 129 rushing yards, 42 receiving yards, and two rushing touchdowns in 13 games with the Eagles last season.
Even without Sproles in the mix, the team can still have a diversified running game.
ESPN’s Tim McManus writes about Doug Pederson’s two analytics assistants that help him decide whether or not to go for it on fourth down:
Pederson named one of them at his day-after news conference — coaching assistant/linebackers coach Ryan Paganetti, a Dartmouth grad with a degree in Economics who spent two years as an analyst for the team. Offensive coordinator Frank Reich told ESPN there is a second voice that can be heard over the game-day communications system when it comes to such matters — director of football compliance Jon Ferrari.
The pair weighs in throughout the game, Reich said: after just about every touchdown on whether to go for one or two; during the final two minutes of each half to discuss timeouts, etc.; and when the team gets into what is considered fourth-down territory — usually around midfield and beyond. Sometimes Pederson initiates the dialogue; other times, the men upstairs do.
Carson Wentz now owes Jake Elliott a game check. But he may have worked out an alternative:
Well that escalated quickly…
but don't worry, @jake_elliott22 and I got this worked out…
— Carson Wentz (@cj_wentz) September 27, 2017
An Eagles fan claims Giants wide receiver Brandon Marshall spat at his face.
After losing in overtime at MSG on Monday, the Flyers won the second leg of a home-and-home against the New York Rangers 4-3. Travis Konecny had the game-winner in the extra session.
It was Sam Morin’s turn to be the top young defenseman. The former first round pick scored the Flyers’ first goal and had a team-high four hits.
“I really don’t put pressure on myself. I know I belong here,” said Morin, a first-round selection (11th overall) in the 2013 draft. “I think I’m ready for the NHL, to be honest. I just have to keep working hard and show those guys I can make it.”
With the Flyers in a 2-0 deficit, Claude Giroux  — who again played left wing on Sean Couturier’s line — raced into the right circle, pirouetted, and dropped a pass to the on-charging Morin in the high slot. The big defenseman put a wrist shot behind Pavelec with 1:24 remaining in the first.
“I just saw ‘G’ had the puck and when he has the puck you have to be ready for the pass,” said Morin, who barely missed scoring a second goal when his backhander from the doorstep went wide midway through the third period. “I was coming from the bench and I just shot the puck toward the net and sometimes the puck goes in.”
Is Morin behind his fellow 2013 draft counterparts in terms of development?
Sam Carchidi is not a fan of protesting the National Anthem.
After spending a couple years in the AHL and some limited experience in the NHL, Jordan Weal is part of the young Flyers core.
Make no mistake, Weal was a darling of the Flyers fan base last season. They wanted him to make the team out of training camp. But the coaching staff thought Weal left a lot of meat on the bone in camp a year ago.
“He’s earned [his spot this season] and he’s kind of earned it the old-fashioned way,” coach Dave Hakstol said. “He spent more than a couple years in the AHL. The reality is he probably didn’t have the type of camp that he had hoped last year, but he went to Lehigh and earned it.
“He was arguably the best player in that league for several months. He’s earned the opportunity to be in a different spot [this year]. He works at his game and competes really hard. Right now, like any player, he’s working to get his game to a regular season level a week from now – and he’s earned that.”
The Sixers officially opened up training camp in Camden. After practice, head coach Brett Brown said he wants the team to make the playoffs:
“As I said to the group, our goal is to make the playoffs,” Brown said. “There are several other teams … they are in a room saying something similar. So to me, let’s talk about what that really means.”
The fifth-year head coach was speaking in terms of what his team needs to do to make a playoff berth possible. That’s understandable. But before Tuesday, Brown spoke of the challenges that will come with starting two rookie ballhandlers in Ben Simmons and Markelle Fultz. He never publicly mentioned trying to make the playoffs. Simmons and Fultz have done a great job of that, while Brown and the Sixers’ front office downplayed the heightened expectations.
Brown still loves Joel Embiid, who won’t participate in 5-of-5 drills throughout camp.
There’s two Okafors at camp this season, but they’re not related. Former first round pick Emeka Okafor is trying to return to the NBA after a four-year absence:
“Being back in this environment, being back in the NBA umbrella, with the guys, the team, talking to the press, just feels so good,” Okafor said Monday. “It feels like putting on a suit that’s always been the right fit, or your favorite pair of jeans, however you want to put it. It just feels very, very natural.”
Why, if something feels so right, would he wait so long to come back? The timing wasn’t right and he wanted to continue rehabbing in a way that would promote longevity.
“Making sure I was healthy and strong and ready to come back and play the way I wanted to play,” Okafor said.
What starting lineups may or may not work for the Sixers this season?
Logan Marchi and Frank Nutile will battle for the starting quarterback job this week, according to Temple head coach Geoff Collins.
Villanova head coach Jay Wright reflects on his time with the late Rollie Massimino.
In other sports news, 10 people involved in college basketball, including four assistant coaches and a senior executive at Adidas, are facing federal bribery, fraud, and corruption charges in what could be the start of something big. And maybe the end of Rick Pitino at Louisville.
Researchers at Boston University may have a biomarker to help diagnose CTE while people are living:
In a study published Tuesday in the journal PLOS ONE, the researchers found that the biomarker, the protein CCL11, might also help distinguish CTE from Alzheimer’s disease, which often presents with symptoms similar to CTE and also can be definitively diagnosed only postmortem. The ability to diagnose CTE in the living would allow not only for the development of possible therapies to treat the disease, but also for research into prevention.
“This is a step forward from our knowledge gained in understanding CTE from brain donations,” says study senior author Ann McKee, a MED professor of neurology and pathology, director of BU’s CTE Center, and chief of neuropathology at VABHS. “It’s a hopeful step. The whole point is to understand as much as we can from the individuals who’ve fallen, so we can apply it to our future veterans and athletes.”
Dwyane Wade is expected to reunite with LeBron James in Cleveland once he clears waivers today.
DirecTV is allowing some subscribers to cancel their Sunday Ticket packages because of the National Anthem protests.
It might reach hockey as well, as Joel Ward, a Canadian, may take a knee during the National Anthem:
“It’s definitely something I wouldn’t cross out,” Ward said when asked by the Mercury News whether he’d consider taking a knee during the national anthem at an upcoming Sharks game.
