Let’s Talk About Pokemon - The Ice Type
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Clearly one of the rarer types. But whenever I see all the Ice types laid out all at once like this, I just end up thinking “Wait... That's it?” It doesn't help that the type is so specific to what kind of environment they can be in, snow fields, mountains, and caves. (You would think with the Sinnoh region being known for being up north and really cold would be teeming with new Ice types, but it only gets a mere one completely original line along with some evolutions.)
You'd think this scarcity might mean the type is almost universally good, but nope. Ice, while very good offensively for being able to topple some of the common types as well as Dragon, Ice is notorious for its amount of weaknesses and only resisting itself. Which doesn't even make that much sense. Shouldn't Ice be resistant to Grass, Bug, or Flying? It doesn't help that they keep trying to make Ice types that are on the defensive side. Cause THAT'LL work out. I think the Ice type needs an overall update for its place in the chart. It's fine if they wanted to make a type that's more offensively oriented in the same way Steel is a master of defense but not that good at offense, but I think this goes a wee bit too far.
Ice is up so far on this like if nothing else, because aesthetically it's one of my favorites, and with 6 left I might as well list them out in order of faves. Ice type took a while to find a good stride, but I do end up loving most of the new Ice types, some of the Alolan forms included. It's just a shame that Alola has a sole, lonely Ice type in terms of entirely new Pokemon. Sigh. Back in the day I was kinda hoping Lunala would be Ice type. Cause the moon is cold, and it would be the opposite of DEFINITELY-a-fire-type Solgaleo and all that.
Ice definitely has the potential to go up a rank or two even, if we get more REALLY good ones along the same quality as some of my favorites among the type like Vanilluxe, Aurorus, and Kyurem. I'd love to see Ice be a little bit more common too. Black and White, as I recall, are the only games that have really found a work-around for Ice types having to wait until nearing the end of the game to even start showing up.
Top 10 Favorite Ice Types:
Tumblr media
Wasn't as hard as expected, given Ice's rather limited selection. And as much as I like Glaceon just as a snowy fox thing, I gotta admit there could be a lot more to it.
Bottom 10 Least Favorite Ice Types:
Tumblr media
This was a bit more difficult, and I don't even necessarily dislike even most of these. Sealeo's probably just winning the prize for “Pokemon I most often forget exists”
The Cutest:

The COOLEST (hah):

The Prettiest:

The Spookiest:

I was surprised I could manage to pull this one off. Cubchoo included, because nothing's spookier about winter than catching a cold.
Weirdest/Most Unique:

Most Inventive Use of the Type:
Tumblr media
Snover and Snorunt are just. Such cute and creative little snow creatures. Between Snorunt's shivering and Snover having the whole evergreen tree creature thing going on. Vanilluxe for creatively combining two ice-associated aspect between ice cream and icicles as the cone. That's STILL so genius. Admittedly Cryogonal is just so hilariously blunt with its design, but who the hell comes up with “carnivorous snowflake”?!
ICE TYPE WISHLIST:
NOTE: These Type Wishlists were written out before any news on new Pokemon from Sword and Shield. The Pokemon revealed over time will not affect these wishlists. Just to present them unaltered despite spoilers and in the interest of getting the wishlist out there, and to see which items on said wishlists get fulfilled by Sword and Shield!
Tumblr media
A Snowman:
I'm alarmed at how requested a snowman is given how much people tend to dislike objectmon. I guess this is an exception since Frosty the Snowman exists? I dunno. EITHER WAY, I want one too. I won't even be that upset if it's super straightforward. I just want ANY kinda snowman.
Tumblr media
A Snow Angel:
Seems like the perfect application for the Ice/Fairy type! Obviously it'd moreso have to be a snow angel in spirit, since a snow angel isn't really a physical thing so much as a shaped indent into the snow.
Tumblr media
A Mint Plant:
I kinda just want another Grass/Ice type, but I'd love to see something with a rather minty aesthetic. Even if we incorporate some sort of “gum” look to it, like colored speckles on its hard body or something.
Tumblr media
A Caribou:
Really, I'd be okay with any cervid getting an Ice type Pokemon. Caribou just have really neat antlers as has the excuse of living in arctic regions.
Tumblr media
A Christmas Elf:
Again, got the perfect opportunity for an Ice/Fairy type here. I'd love to see any more Christmasy-associated Pokemon out there. Heck, I could already see dex entries about this thing and how, true the tricky nature of fairies, it love to leave gifts for children. At the expense of it stealing from someone else to get said gift. That's perfect for the Fairy type.
Tumblr media
A Snow Owl:
I'm just never gonna get tired of owls. Fight me. Not super counting on this one any time soon since we very recently got the Rowlet line, but I’d love to see this thing help bolster the number of offensively-oriented Ice types. One that’s actually got the Speed to not get one-shot before it can move in the meantime, too.

An Icy Moth:
I get why we don’t exactly have a ton of Bug/Ice types. Winter/Snow and insects tend not to go together. But there’s still species of bugs that live in the world’s colder regions! Like the snow moth and the arctic woolly bear moth (what a name)! I’d love to see a moth with a really pretty, crystalline design.
