Leo is afraid. Not of you, never of you. Your skill in battle has saved him and his brothers countless times, and you've worked hard to control your explosive emotions.
No, Leo is afraid of the power you have over him. Logically, he knows you would never hurt him with this power, but the dark whispers in his mind murmured otherwise. They whispered of betrayal, of abandonment, of heart-shattering hurt. He hated those whispers that planted seeds of doubt in his mind, hated that he was so needy for reassurance that he's not troublesome, that he's wanted, that he's needed-
It came to a climax one day when you visited. Leo's insomnia had him awake for an unhealthy number of hours, and he looked like a zombie.
"Leo?"
He turned from the bowl of cereal he'd been preparing in the kitchen, dark eye bags nearly making your eyes water. "Y/N!" he greeted quietly. You tilted your head in concern, taking in his appearance. Besides the dark eye bags, his movements were sluggish and his skin was a dull green, not to mention the shadow of the smile he usually wore. He yawned, turning to join you on the couch.
"Leo, when was the last time you slept?"
"Hm?" he looked up, gaze unfocused. "Uh, I took a power nap this morning."
Your eyebrows met. "Rephrase: when was the last time you slept for more than four hours?"
Leo's face scrunched up with the bite of cereal he took. "Hmm... probably Tuesday. I can't remember." It's Saturday.
Shoving the instinct to drag him to his bed to sleep, you stared at him. "Did something make your insomnia act up?"
Leo froze, spoon halfway to him mouth. His unfocused eyes darted to you and back to his spoon, suddenly eating much more cautiously.
"It's just me overthinking, as usual. What sort of toppings might go on pizza in an alternate universe, or something."
You hummed, taking the bowl of cereal. "Ok, now try again without the bullshit."
Leo looked longingly at the bowl sitting innocently at the table, before leaning his head back on the couch. "Stupid mind reading powers," he grumbled, curling up.
"Ah, yes, the power of empathy. Comparable to telepathy," you joked, scooting closer to the slider. "So what's actually up, my dude, my friend, my champ?"
"That."
"What?"
"That- that thing you do. Making me feel like I'm your everything."
You tilted your head, full-body turning to face him. "But you are?"
"See?! How can you say stuff like that and actually mean it? How do I know if you're lying? It would be better if you were, because that would just be easier!"
You reeled in confusion. "Easier? Easier for what? Life isn't easy, Leo."
Leo looked at you, eyes locking. "Easier for my heart, Y/N. Easier for me to lie to myself, easier for me to pretend I'm worth anything, easier for me to-"
"What the fuck are you saying?"
Leo blinked owlishly from being cut off. You continued, "So, let me get this straight- you don't think you're worth my time and effort and love?" He couldn't meet your eyes at that question.
"Well, good thing I get to decide what to do with my time, effort, and love," you said simply, taking his hand. "'Cause I want to spend it all on you."
Leo looked up again, eyes glistening. "And when I inevitably fuck everything up?"
You chuckled, pulling him close. "You have a way of un-fucking things up. Sometimes things turn out better than they were before they were fucked up. That's part of the emotional rollercoaster us humans call life."
"And-" Leo cut himself off, screwing his eyes shut. "And?" You prompted patiently.
"What if- what if you hurt me?" he whispered. "What if I can't come back from that? What if you break me?"
You sighed, pulling the mutant to lay on top of you. "Well, there's always a risk. I'm risking my heart for you too, you know. And it's scary, how much power we have over each other. But... it's a risk I'm willing to take. I won't pressure you into making that sort of decision for me, though, that wouldn't be fair to you."
"Life isn't fair," Leo mumbled a ghost of your words into your shirt. You could feel his breathing slow, and you wrapped your arms around the slider's shell, warmth seeping in from all sides. After a few minutes, you were certain Leo was asleep, until he murmured, just barely above a whisper, "Take care of my heart. It's fragile."
You smiled softly. "Done, Baby Blue." The cereal lay forgotten.
