Marte, I have been wanting to ask you this for a while now. Louis drinks and smokes a lot and that’s his entire image/personality these days. My question is why do you think he is doing so much smoking and drinking and why does he make being a chav his personality? For his image? Is he insecure or ashamed of being flamboyant (thus gay) that he tries to fit into the 'manly man' stereotype? Or is it bc he thinks his music will sell better? Or maybe he wants those type of people to listen to him.
Finally, do you think if Louis came out as gay that this image thing wouldn’t be a problem? Because then the cat would be out the bag and he wouldn’t have to be soo overly straight.
I think these days it's really hard to differentiate between Louis (the one he is in private) and Louis Tomlinson TM (the artist with an image). I think it's for several reasons.
He's not the same person he was 13 years ago. His sense of self has changed and he's been shaped by his experiences, both good and bad. I also thinks he's the type of person who changes behaviour drasticly depending on who he's around. He can go from tough lad to caring soft boy in seconds. He's also very mulitidimentional and is very hard to pin down as this or that. Look, half this fandom thinks he's daddy and the other half a soft baby. He can be both.
The image he's going for is straight chav, common boy who's manking music for teenage alt. boys. His last album was trying to please everyone at once. His music is still 99% pop, and he's got some soft ballads that don't exactly target chav men. I'm picturing a 19 year old chav in Leeds wearing an adidas track suit listening to HOTH in his bedroom and i can't see it. So who knows where that's going...
I don't think he's ashamed to be gay. I think he accepted and embraced that fact long ago. And i think he's open about it to his closest ones.
Do i think he thinks being gay is an inconvenience? In his line of work? Perhaps, yes. He's certainly been told so, and advised to act straight.
Do i think he's willing to play straight to make money and tour the music he loves? Yes, i do. But i don't think he's specifically straight acting because of the men he's targeting.
Do i think it takes a toll on him, lying to his fanbase who mostly knows he's living a lie, playing pretend daddy and keeping his flamboyance constantly in check? Yes, i do. More than he's possibly aware of himself. He's dulled himself down so much in recent years, he's pretty boring now compared to what he used to be. We know he's got a killer personality, but we haven't been privy to it in years. Is being boring a part of his chav image? God, i hope not!
Do i think he's open about drinking and doing dugs as part of his image? Yes, in part, but i also think it's a crutch and a coping mechanism (a very unhealthy one) to manage living with all the secrets he's keeping.
And to your last question. I have always though that both Harry and Louis coming out won't pose a problem. I think they'd both be better off mentally and while being genuinely themselves and showing off who they really are they'd also attract new fans. Just look at Harry. The more flamboyant he's on stage, the more people are drawn to him, and the more attention he gets. People are screaming for him to sing Medicine. For Louis i think it actually would be easier to come out, beause most his fans already knows he's gay. And if he's genuine enough, maybe he'd gain back the fans he lost during bbg. Would he lose the alt. chavs he's targeting by coming out? Maybe, but then again he don't have them now so... lol.
