I want to put together a guide to drawing fishes that is geared specifically at artists. I see a lot of common mistakes in gorgeous art pieces that are just because the artist doesn't know fish anatomy well enough to catch them. And that's understandable! But I both have an in depth understanding of fish anatomy and am an artist myself, so I could absolutely make a useful reference. 🤔

#imagine if morphological experts in all sorts of taxa did this kind of thing #theres lots of useful guides for drawing humans but artists typically just have to look at a fish and wing it #and if they dont know fish anatomy they dont realize how jarring it looks when they overlook the pectoral fins #i dont know if other taxa get this treatment so commonly #fishes also get treated like the word fish only refers to one or two things #when fishes are the largest group of vertebrates #i mean theyre not a taxonomically valid group but nonetheless #way more organisms we typically call fishes than there are any other group of vertebrates #i wish more people would make beautiful fish art and actually reference individual species #and preferably do so without mixing fresh and marine species because thats a pet peeve
