Hi Em! I haven’t had a lot of eggnog but I have fairly decent memories of it. However I was thinking of picking some up at the store a few weeks back so now I’ll have to give it another shot! Also I would definitely want reputation merch too: I dream of the snake ring and the end game peach hoodie.

For today, fun little game idea: if you had to make a christmas ep with five of your favorite (or most tolerated) holiday songs and five favorite artists to cover them, which songs would you match with which artists? As an example, here’s what I’d do:

1. Last Christmas - Rina Sawayama (she’d absolutely sell this)

2. Sleigh Ride - boygenius (I can’t explain this one but it’d be so sweet)

3. Silent Night - Stevie Nicks (just came to me but I need it now)

4. Rockin Around the Christmas Tree - Beyoncé! (I feel like her riffs would be awesome)

5. All I Want for Christmas is You - Taylor (obviously she is not making a Mariah remake but I think she could put a really warm country spin on this! Imagine the earnestness of Timeless/Emma Falls in Love and the sounds of Debut)

i can't remember if we actually covered this in the class but my final paper was GOING to be on how melancholy affected john dowland's gender presentation, how that was perceived by his contemporaries vs how it's perceived today, and then my prof was like 'that is not an 8-10 page final paper that is a dissertation. let me know if you do want to write a dissertation tho' and then i had to narrow it down to gender perception of in darkness let me dwell and u know what? he was right i did easily fill 8-10 pages just talking about one (not very long) song

dw about rina's album (that tweet isn't actually a line from the song btw it's just because of how annoying she's acting on social media w the egregious use of aave) like it's different from her usual direction of sound but it has a thematic effect sawayama didn't. it's def weaker than her previous album but it is more cohesive in its narrative about generational trauma and healing your inner child

oh thank GOD 😫 bc when i read that i thought they were referring to her songwriting on the new album and i was scared lol. i would've been so disappointed if we lost rina to this mediocrity epidemic that seems to be on the rise. we nearly lost lorde to it (though i like to think she's in remission after solar power, at least i hope so 😔) and losing rina too would've been too much. and yess, i did have a feeling that this album was going to be weaker when i heard this hell and esp when it was picked as the lead single too bc if we're being honest, while i can recognise that it's a fun song, this hell has got nothing on her previous lead singles like XS or Cherry (though i haven't listened to any of the other lead singles that she's released for this album, so i might be looking like a fool rn 😳) but the aave use is so utterly annoying and irritating. i just saw how she's been talking on twitter and it grinds my gears like she's bri'ish!!!! imagine her saying "that's so MOTHA" "this song is peak motha" whilst sounding as white as can be sjdhksdfhgfd like girl SHUT UP!!!!!!! be quiet log out of twitter and just switch off your damn phone!! definitely not surprised tho bc if i remember correctly, she had an issue with her last album as well when she covered the 1975's song with that weird ass tone deaf lyric about police brutality and its like girl....you're way too old to be acting this stupidly and thoughtlessly! like there are absolutely no excuses. anyways, at least its a fun time. and as a pee oh cee i can always appreciate a narrative about generational trauma, so yay!! thank you for the info tho!! 💖 i'll be listening to it soon (you'll know when i reblog the songs teehee)

Hold the girl: Album review

Hello this is my personal review of Rina Sawayama's new album, Hold the girl! I just wanted to do this for funsies so if you disagree I will not argue as this is just my opinion and I also just wanna see what I can do with my art classes lmao

anyway! I'll be doing a review of the whole album and not reviewing the individual songs!

first look:

A very surrealistic vibe and not exactly out of line with what I know of Rina's aesthetic. I like the roundness of the dress (?) and the contrast, very eyecatching!

As always there are a few songs with elements of electro/techno pop in these songs which is very different from what I normally listen to so it's interesting to hear it! I first got introduced to techno/electro through an artist I admire and then I listened to the spotify generated playlist hehe

I think Sawayama's music style and sound is very unique and refreshing as I have never heard anything like it before, mixing a lot of good vocals with awesome percussion. Her music also reminds me of the more Asian Pop genre though the themes she explores - motherhood, feminism, queerness, healing, forgiveness - are quite unusual for this genre (not saying it doesn't exist tho) and also hard to adress in this/my community. Nevertheless, Sawayama introduces these topics to her (mainly Western) audience with a lot of grace, but also never treading around it lightly and directly saying what she wants to say instead of vaguely alluding to it. This gives her music a lot of authenticity and also manages to convey a personal yet universal message of what I think is the human condition: loving, getting hurt, healing, dreaming, hoping...

When listening to Sawayama's discography you'll find that this isn't her first time covering these topics as they are also featured on her 2020 album, SAWAYAMA.

In general, the album has a futuristic look and as such is focused on the future, by letting go and maturing and is quite optimistic, but the 11th song, Send my love to John, is nostalgic and full of apologies for the past that hurts. Here her voice works very soothing though the listener also knows who was ultimately at fault, we feel sympathy. Send my love to John shows not the femme fatale side of Sawayama which is very much present in the other songs, but more that of a mother, which is also what the song is about, so she took that role onto herself very well. We know it is not necessarily Sawayama herself in this song but we still feel fully captivated by the story.

All in all, this album is definitely worth the listen and can introduce you nicely to the techno/electro pop music. This album gave Sawayama the chance to showcase and develop her writing, as a storyteller, even more and it sure paid off. In her songs she has fully captured the sound of letting go, healing, forgiving and holding out for someone but also not taking any fucks.

Rating: 8/10

maggie rogers - surrender / this has just kinda been a mood all year. like messy and melodramatic and bombastic and honest

lady gaga - the fame monster / got pulled to revisit this, and i'm sorry but she served so fucking hard. this is the deluxe w the fame included btw

ariana grande - dangerous woman / idk i just felt like i needed to revisit it after spending a lot of time away and unfortunately it's still a really good pop album

mitski - the land is inhospitable and so are we / underrated as fuck healing album. easily her best

beabadoobee - beatopia / been revisiting a lot of summer 2022 stuff and this one has held up so well. really good album and great cover

hitsujibungaku - 12 hugs (like butterflies) / i love their previous album and this is their new release! it's not my favorite but it's rly good and i wanna give it more time to grow on me

marina - electra heart / been pulled back to the melodramatic pop of my teen years (see tfm and dw above) and they're all just really good? been humming hypocrates all month

yeule - softscars / been an album for processing shit and letting it go and being unabashedly, cringedly myself

boygenius - the record & the rest / [ tries not to cry ] ok but actually tho just cool about it & afraid of heights. that is all

alvvays - blue rev / dash rly likes after the earthquake and the album is so good :)

charli xcx - crash / missed this album a bit! still rly good imo like it fills the niche of pop to turn your brain off to

food house - food house / my fav hyperpop project still, wanted earnestness and simple tried-and-true tactics rather than gimmicks and frost childrens' hyperpop albums have been on heavy rotation all year so i figured i'd revisit this instead

olivia rodrigo - guts / the stranglehold this has on my teenager arc...

pinkpantheress - heaven knows / REALLY good in a surprising way. thought her debut project was good-but-not-great but this has some BANGERS and a stunning cover. women win

yola - stand for myself / revisiting summer 2022 stuff again, but this is like the most meaningful album of that era to me and i have been just thinking about a lot

lucy dacus - home video / [ starts crying ] top 3 of all time for me. thumbs only hits harder as more time passes unfortunately

courtney barnett - tell me how you really feel / dash really likes it, and i've been in the mood for some courtney anyways. ttttt is also rly good but it's a healing album and i am not exactly healing rn lmao

hayley williams - flower for vases (descansos) / continuing right from where ^ left off, this has been my comfort during rough times for going on 3 years now. such a flawless album

rina sawayama - hold the girl / ok now HERE'S a healing album. this one is still so good idgaf if it's not experimental genre fusions. the girls that get it get it and the ones that don't dont

corinne bailey rae - black rainbows / can i be real i listened to this on a whim this month bc of mic the snare and wow it's so good. been on my mind ever since

sigrid - the hype / honestly a bit of a sleeper hit on this chart? borderline has been slowly becoming one of my all time fav pop songs, and i forgot how good wanted it to be you was

frost children - hearth room / my fav hyperpoppers really went and made an indie record... it's fun tbh it's silly and lighthearted and i love frost park in particular :)

carly rae jepsen - the loneliest time & the loveliest time / both of these are stunningly good but i've been fixating on talking to yourself all month

ethel cain - preacher's daughter / [ continues crying ] girlie is emotionally crafting things to be here specifically for me during my lowest points and we love that for me

Born & raised in Chatham, England there’s no other place like it to him. Sure when he went on holiday to the villa, it was quite nice but nothing ever beats home. He genuinely believes that he’s meant to be in this place since it’s all he’s ever known & doesn’t think he’ll live anywhere else

Raised by his nan & is an only child. Was at risk of being placed in foster care until his paternal nan came forth to raise him

His father and nan did not have the best relationship due to the way he chose to live his life and Gary was kept away from his nan until he was about 10 years of age

Does not like to talk about his birth parents due to the trauma, which is why he feels like his nan is his everything. His savior and why she means so much to him

His nan once told him that he favors his mother, Gail. He never had the chance to really know her, but was aware that she was very unhappy with herself &, “chose to be with the stars” just before his 5th birthday

That’s one of the reasons why he finds himself always looking up at the stars, usually when he’s drunk out at the docks by himself, he’ll try to talk to his mom, to know her better

I feel like he’s either a cancer or a Libra?

Went to uni for a semester and thought about architecture as a profession but ultimately felt like uni was NOT for him and eventually juggled around with jobs until he landed into the crane operator field which he found himself to be great at

For as long as he and his nan can remember, he always loved playing with cars, ships, building Legos, (I’m American idk if this is a thing there too or it’s something different/similar so my apologies lol) and putting things together. He never cared for reading instructions, Gary’s a hands on type of guy/learner and it’s how he best communicates

He likes heights, so this job wasn’t an issue it was just getting through the program for 2-3 years that was a pain in his ass but he was determined + knew this was what he was good at and stuck with it.

It was tiring working 40 sometimes over 40 hrs a week but he’s passionate about his work so he’d never dare change it

Due to this job being a lot physically, he would use muscle cream to help his pain or pay to see a masseuse whenever he could or wasn’t being cheap about it + often buys epsom salt to bathe in 3 or so times a week

Total penny pincher! I can see him being so, his dad told him all about how to hold onto what he’s got and always look for a bargain but with a gambler for a father, you can only imagine how that worked in his favor

Lives with his nan and doesn’t see an issue with it. His mates definitely tease him about it but know how much the woman means to him but still think it’s a major c*ck block for him but it’s a two for one package deal and anyone who doesn’t understand that doesn’t deserve him

Will probably still live in her house once IF she p*sses

Nan is a big fan of wallpaper and has one room in the flat that has squeaky plastic covering most of her furniture ( she loves furniture shopping) & only takes it off once her lady friends come over with consists of a huge cleaning routine which Gary secretly hates but pushes through it while she plays some old tunes on her jukebox

He finds himself singing those exact songs when he’s getting ready for work and actually enjoys them...but don’t ever tell his mates that!

His nan taught him basic household care & he finds himself scolding his mates for not knowing how to wash their underwear & always taking it to their mum’s or having their girlfriends do it for them

Loves washing clothes on a Sunday in the backyard + hanging them on the clothes line. His nan doesn’t believe in washer machines & makes her own detergent

He’s always down for a rooftop hangout, whether drunk or not. To be up almost as high as the stars is such a feeling or hang out with his mates laughing it up

Occasionally smokes cigarettes when he’s really stressed, he’s not proud of the nasty habit and tries his hardest to hide it from his nan & Lottie but they both know

Is in a on and off again relationship with Lottie. She’s met his nan, they both like each other. And that makes Gary extremely happy

Gary is the laid back one out of the two and Lottie is firey and needs constant reminding from Gary that he wants to be with her whereas Gary feels like that’s something she should already know and he’s told her a couple of times before, he’s sure of it. He doesn’t get why she doesn’t get that

Which results in arguments. Lottie chose to live in England for half of the year and goes back to Australia for the other half. Nan encouraged Lottie to live with the two of them until she decided to get her own place in England, or rather the two of them together. Nan doesn’t believe Gary will leave in fear of her being lonely, which she’s not! By all means, nan keeps busy! But Lottie desperately wants to have her own space with Gary away from nan, even tho she adores the spunky lady.

When they don’t see eye to eye she does what she does best and leaves, which is exhausting to Gary

They’ll go days without speaking until the other cracks. At first it would be Gary but since it’s been a year into their relationship, he’s gotten used to it and let’s her come back to him when she’s ready

He cares for Lottie, he really does. And wants this to work but he just wishes they could be more secure in their relationship.

Was a f*ckboy way back when from 18-20 and rarely there’s his old flings who show up just to cause drama knowing that Gary’s got a new girl in his life that LIVES with him, which Gary dreads that this small town knows his business. He hates confrontation but there’s one thing about Lottie, she’s never going to bite her tongue. So whenever those girls do try it with not only her but Gary she goes off.

Gary is protective too so when those messy girls start shit at the pub, he’s instantly trying to get Lottie away from the issue. Then there’s drinks flying and slap fights happening + hair pulling & they’re getting kicked out of the club/pub or even cops called on them.

“This blows. I thought you said you were trying to be better than this, Lottie.” “Me? What about those slags?! They attack not only me but your character too!” Which adds to a list of the reasons they fight.

Nonetheless they do have their fun moments together, getting drunk by the docks, getting random tattoos, hanging with his friends & their significant others, + going to the theatre

Lottie still thinks this town is very slow-pace, sleepy, cloudy and hardly has sun— which is okay to her some days but other day’s it can be dreadful and much different from her fast-pace life but she finds the little things like spending time with Gary to encourage her to stay

Gary likes playing games when he has his free time, like fortnite, red dead redemption, Final fantasy, & SUPER SMASH BROS & almost always plays with Ibrahim who informs him about new games which makes Lottie want to slam her head against the wall since that can take hours

Keeps in touch with all of the boys in villa and makes sure they have zoom meetings as much as they can because he cares about those boys. Noah tries to schedule them but usually it’s happens at random which annoys him but he gets over it. Gary spent month(s) with them. They’re basically his extended family & that’s saying a lot since he views his home to a high standard and has friends here but they’re nothing like his villa brother’s

Also into woodwork. He didn’t think he’d enjoy it but he likes to do it more when the weather gets crisp and he battles with that over cigarettes to ease his worries in life, then goes and have his daily dose of tea

Finally stopped dying his hair that awful yellow and stuck with it. Marisol was the first to see it, after an accidental FaceTime call which was supposed to be just a regular phone call but whatever? They’d all eventually see it if he EVER decided to post to his IG stories!

She compliments him in Spanish yanking her glasses off leaving him highly confused, “is that good?” “If Lottie doesn’t sit on your— which leaves Gary very wide eyed opposed to his raised brows but Marisol is cut off by Graham clearing his throat

Lottie does indeed like it & shows him how much and later asks his option on what color she should dye her hair next. 3 out of the 13 look the exact same to Gary. But he helps her dye her hair which comes out patchy but there’s no way in hell she’s letting anyone else touch her hair. She’s been doing this all on her own for some time now. Gary’s lucky she even allowed him to help her! So she dyes it back to blonde, all of it, and waits a few weeks to dye it all blue

Gary’s definitely into old boy bands especially LFO & serenades, “girl on tv” to Lottie all the time, likes 98 degrees, Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC, Boys II men, & Dru Hill

As for modern day music, he LOVES to work out to tame impala which never makes sense to his mates but he usually works out the next day after getting shit-faced, he’s also in love with lizzo’s music, laundry day, brockhampton, & rina sawayama

in agreement with your sentiment towards rina's heartfelt ballads *cough* chosen family *cough*. I appreciate the message and the lyrics, sure, but not everyone is equipped for the delivery or writing of such. it's very easy to make balladry campy & laughable in execution.

her dance music has me by the metaphorical balls tho, Alterlife and 10-20-40 off RINA still throttle me like a boss to an underleveled RPG character with a masochistic streak.

rina's eye for aesthetic is immaculate and her songs productions are fantastic it's just that she's not a particularly talented lyricist. all of her song lyrics tend to be extremely on the nose in ways that work most of the time when you're doing campy dance pop but a ballad is a very specific art form that requires more skill. she has the voice for it! her delivery rn isn't the best but she could work on it! i would like to see an excellent stylish ballad from her!

one of my fave rina songs is the heartfelt ballad adjacent track cherry that has extremely shallow kind of clunky lyrics but it's so earnest about gay experience that it works 90% of the time. but even tho it has a ballad chorus (which is what i love about it tbh in korean i'm a sucker for ballads) it has that polished pop production and verses that cover the gaps. "with your girl gaze" is. not a pretty phrase. flicker also rides that line a little bit and has v obvious lyrics but i still like the song a lot.

her dance music tho..... XS was perfect and needed commes des garcons was a v simple girl power song but it was fuckin GREAT (i needed key on a remix but he was in the military :')) i much prefer rina to sawayama its a fantastic album like i had take me as i am and 10-20-40 and alterlife on REPEAT she's absolutely perfect at that y2k pop sound she's SO GOOD at britney vibes christina vibes it's incredible.

it's a case where the american belief that all singers should write their own songs just makes the overall quality of the work drop, if she had a capable lyricist to collaborate with a lot of the problems would be solved.
