That Thing With The Ogre pt 1
Matty let out a heavy sigh as she stared up at the night sky, taking in the heavy post storm smell of the forest around her. The back of her pick up wasn’t the most comfortable place to relax at, but she wanted to be anywhere but on base at the moment. In subtle ways the base commander was making her life hell, like having the rest of the security forces search the block of dorms she was in on an  “anonymous tip” that someone on base was dealing ecstasy. A two in the morning raid had managed to catch a few people with illegal items, but all it was for her was an inconvenience, a way to be harassed by the powers that be without actually being harassed. So, off base and out into the woods it was. A good way to relax at 3 in the morning on a Thursday, and being on leave meant she didn’t have to work again until next week.
“Hey, kid, nice work knocking out that punk in the bar. Yer dads real proud o’ya” A slightly squeaky voice said from behind and above her. Matty jerked into a sitting position, her hand reaching for a gun at her hip that wasn’t there.  “Did I spook ya kid? I’d apologize if it wasn’t so damn funny watching you flail around like that.” The speaker revealed itself as it dropped from a tree and onto the top of her truck with a heavy thunk, and Matty couldn’t believe her eyes. It was a squirrel, but not a regular teeny tiny run of the mill squirrel. This one was the size of a labrador retriever, with glowing green eyes and red and black fur.  “Names Ratatoskr kid. Your dad sent me.”
Matty’s heart beat faster in her chest. As far as she knew her dad was an accountant, and her mom was a nurse. Neither of them had any link to any of the supernatural powers of the world.  “My dad?” She said slowly, meeting the creatures eyes to try to play down her nerves.
For his part, Ratatoskr scratched behind his ears.  “Yeah, your dad. Your real dad. Not the mortal that adopted you.”
“I’m adopted?” Matty almost whispered, her throat feeling dry.
“They never told you huh? Ouch, having to hear that from the greatest squirrel in all the 9 realms.” The squirrel shook its head.  “Do you even know who I am kid?”
Matty closed her eyes and took a breath, trying to think. Ratatoskr, the name seemed familiar. Then it clicked  “You’re the squirrel that runs up and down the tree of life, Yggdrasil, which means that my father is one of the Aesir.” She let out a long slow breath.  “Who?”
“Well, you aren’t a complete waste. There’s a reason he sent me here on his name day. C’mon kid, follow me, he sent me with gifts for ya and yer gonna need’em.”
Matty jumped down from the bed of her truck, grabbed   her flashlight, and followed Ratatoskr deeper into the woods.  “Thor?” She called out to the squirrel.  “Are you telling me I’m a daughter of Thor?” The squirrel didn’t reply except with a chitter that sounded somewhat like a laugh. They followed a beaten path between the trees until her guide leapt up into the branches of a massive oak and then spun around and perched on the trunk of the tree. At the foot of tree, nestled in its roots, were 2 large gift   boxes.
“There you go. Open the smaller one first.”
Matty wiped her hands on her jeans and took a deep breath, kneeling down in the soft damp leaves littering the  forest floor. The ribbons came off the box easily, and her eyes lit up as she lifted up the thick leather vest and studied it. It felt light, but strong, and its back had a runic knot image of Mjolnir, Thor's – no, her father's – hammer. There were 2 leather gloves, or more accurately, bracers, in the box as well. “The leathers from a wild boar, as big as your truck, slain by one of your mortal kin and gifted to the Aesir in sacrifice. There's a lot of other stuff I could tell you about how it was made but what you need to know is it will offer some protection, and unlike most leather sets like that it's bulletproof.” Ratatoskr chittered. Matty nodded, slipping the vest and bracers on. They fit easily, and she could feel the magic of them seeping into her and making her feel safe. “Go on, open the other box kid.”
Matty picked up the other box and grunted, it was unexpectedly weighty. She worked the ribbons off and lifted the lid. Inside was a thick headed sledge hammer, she guessed it to be twenty or twenty five pounds at least, and both the haft and head of it was engraved with runes. “This is Skallebryter.” The squirrel chittered. “Yer dad figured you'd need a weapon, with what's coming.”
“A weapon. For a warrior...” The words trailed off as Matty lifted the hammer slowly, studying the craftsmanship, the intricacies of the carvings on it. “What's coming that would require me to have something like this?”
