Okay guys so I need help brainstorming a fantasy medieval wedding ceremony. It needs to be EXTRA.
Like, in context, this is an old tradition most people don’t really do anymore outside of royal weddings because it’s just too much, and also somewhat dangerous.
So, both partners show up with a prop, yeah? I have the dude’s side all figured out, which is that he has a knife. And then he makes some speech about “may the blade of our union be used to protect not harm” or whatever and he does three actions:
The first is he cuts a ribbon that’s around the bride’s neck. This symbolizes like, trusting someone to have a blade at your throat but use it to help / free you or whatever.
Then he cuts a piece of fruit and feeds it to her. This is about providing for her.
Then he says some bit about “may my blade rest easy in your care” and then he slides it in a sheath she’s carrying at her waist. This is an innuendo.
Anyway so now I need to figure out the part of the bride, and I’m mostly thinking about maybe she could be carrying a candle?
(It would then be called like, the sword and flame ritual or whatever)
And one action could be to use her candle to light the candles carried by the bridal party, with some words about sharing the light of their unions to guide others
But I’m totally blanking on what else could be involved. Something about warmth???
Since part of the ritual is also, like, about giving both the bride and groom several opportunities to kill eachother and them symbolically not taking it, I thought maybe she could also light a drink on fire and offer it to him lmao
She’s from fantasy!manitoba so it would absolutely 100% be a grain alcohol
But idk what the third thing could be. Something extra and dangerous that totally ended up with someone’s clothes on fire a few times before lol
