#i don't resent this really—her own parents were 100x worse and she was trying to reject that even though she didn't succeed

I know it’s easy to believe that people never change, but ... my mother was pretty homophobic while I was growing up (not realizing I was a lesbian), and she ended up completely reversing course as she got older (despite still not realizing this about me specifically for a very long time).
Today she called me to be like “oh, so my childhood friend is gay and lonely, and he never had anything to do with the LGBT community because he lived in such a dreadfully conservative area and was scared of the consequences. He’s never been to Pride or anything, and he’s moving to our area ... so maybe you could help him???”
It’s like—damn, I would not have expected “hey, can you take my middle-aged gay friend under your wing so he can find love” when I was 17.
