running down your stairs, cheeks flushed with embarrassment for the scolding you’re going to get from your neighbors in the morning and the amount of effort your best friend put into this. despite almost sliding to your death on the final step, you fumble and quickly slip your slippers on and bolt out your front door.

haechan was standing in your front yard with the boombox still over his head, a small white dog holding a sunflower in its mouth and a sign hanging around haechan’s neck that had a big red heart drawn on it. ‘are you fucking inane? it’s past midnight right now!’ you say in a hushed whisper, walking over to the boy who was gleaming at you. his shaky arms lower as he maneuvers the box and turns down the music before lowering it to his side. ‘insanely down bad for you, pretty girl.’ rolling your eyes, you give his shoulder a slight shove before reaching down to pet the sweet little dog.

‘again whose dog is this?’ haechan ignores your words, grabbing your hips to pull you against his chest. he’s already nuzzled his face into the crook of your neck before you can question his sudden affection. ‘just say you’ll be my valentine this year.’ he mumbled against your skin, bringing warmth throughout your entire body. ‘what about the following years, hyuckie?’he laughs against your neck, wrapping his arms around your waist. ‘we’ll worry about that next year, this year you’re mine.’

Papers spread out all across the desk, the lamp shining down in the far back corner barely lit up the space enough for you to even attempt to regain focus on all the work that you have yet to get done. With your fingers gripping the sides of your hair, you groaned with what felt like your entire being. School was becoming too much, life was becoming too stressful and you wish the world would open beneath you and swallow you hole if it meant you could escape the demons that were chasing you in your dreams.

Just as you were about to swipe every book and pen off your desk, the door to your bedroom opens and you already knew who it was. Haechan peaked his head through the crack, looking over to see you hunched over at the desk. Your body was visibly tense, frustration emitting from your stance alone. Quietly, he made his way into the room with a few of your favorite snacks in hand. Taking in slow and shallow breaths, you pulled your hands from the grip they had on the strands of your hair and lifted your head towards his direction.

“Break time?” The playful look on his face brought a smile to your lips, he always knew when you were overwhelmed and what to do to save you from yourself. “I’m almost done, I just gotta find—“ His hands meet your shoulders once he found a spot to set everything down on the bed. Gently massaging the muscles underneath, he let out a breath as he leaned down to place a kiss on your crown. “Shh, no talking, it’s time to relax a bit.” Without fighting, you leaned back into the chair till your head rested against his abdomen.

“Thank you hyuck.” Although you mumbled it, he knew you wanted him to hear it and his heart couldn’t help, but swell. The two of you stay in this moment till you break yourself free from your own thoughts and Haechan somehow convinces you to come eat with him. Instead of going back to your work that was how abandoned, he pulled you to the couch where you two laid with your legs tangled within another and watched mindless tv for background noise. As he combed his fingers through your hair, you listened to the sound of his heart beating in his chest. Nothing was said for the next few hours, but the actions you two carried out exactly what both of your hearts were screaming. I love you.
