There's a certain tragedy regarding the simplicity of lemonade and the frequency of people fucking it up.

#hyperbole but w/e #like making good lemonade isnt that hard to the point that having good lemonade isnt really an accomplishment #however the amount of bad lemonades out there in the world makes the lemon lover in me cry. #anyways: how to improve your lemonade. 1st taste along the way. 2nd instead of adding sugar directly to water instead make simple syrup #simple syrup is 1 part sugar to 1 part water. boiling the water speeds up the solution. #2:1 sugar:water makes it shelf stable if you want to use the syrup for cocktails #anyways after you dissolve the sugar and heat the water turn off the stove and put the zest from your lemons youre using in the syrup #this will steep and draw out the oils (which have a lot of lemon flavor). this lets you strengthen the taste of your lemonade w/o the sour #but still use the juice for the tartness because tart lemonades are great #in fact you can actually throw other stuff into the syrup to steep if theres a lot of flavor in the oil #i sometimes put chopped mint and green chilies. thats makes good lemonades #you can also do ginger; cardamom; anise; honestly any spice #just fucking treat the hot syrup like it was tea. hell put tea in the syrup #as long as you strain the solids out of the syrup you just use it in place of the sugar when combining it and the juice and water #How To Drink youtube channel has a vid all about making syrups; both conventional and not #you can also make more fruity syrups by throwing fruits in a pot like strawberries with a bit of water; heat it; and just smash the bastards #strain the solids once again; reduce and you have syrups that you can then add to your lemonade #add sugar too to your fruit syrups theres not enough natural sugars to make the quantity you want #if you keep these syrups in little bottles you can honestly mix and match for all kinds of drinks #like club soda + these syrups and this is just normal soda but with funky flavors #you want to drink a god damn black pepper soda you cam #i think this escaped me #the power of syrups is potent

Ran 15 miles yesterday, 10 of which were Pittock Mansion climb repeats (mostly hiking on the way up because: average of 9% grade for 1.3 miles at a time, repeated four times). Averaged a 13-minute mile on what turned out to be my second-climbingest run ever--about 3,300 feet of elevation gain. Motherfucker Unlimited tbh

I don't often use tone indicators but I find people complaining about them specifically with "ugh why should I have to learn and remember all these things??" deeply disingenuous. do you also complain about tbh, omg, lol, lmao, imo, ime, ofc, tl;dr, wyd, tfw, lmk, afaik, fyi, idk, ikr, nbd, omw, smh, wtf, tmi, etc. etc. etc.? or do you use them regularly and have no problem with them?

if you do in fact have problems with these and complain about them then like. carry on! yea so anyway mob/vigilante justice is always a bad idea. the people likely to get the brunt of that are always the most marginalized, the easiest targets, the ones no one will miss. we like to talk about csa a lot on this blog (and by we i mean i) and that includes a lot of you sending me very graphic and hyperbolic descriptions of violence you wanna commit against my abusive characters. which is fine (I mean it would have been better if you'd all asked before doing that but lucky for you I enjoy gore so w/e)

but if you like, actually genuinely want to "kill all rapists" or something then you are an untrustworthy person. that kind of lust for genuine violence is really reactionary and disconcerting. it doesn't come from a place of care and it kinda just makes it seem like you really want to hurt and/or murder someone but you're waiting for a good excuse (as in, a "bad enough" person) to do it.

even if you set aside the wave of queerphobia we're living through which asserts that all queer people, and especially openly queer people, are sexual predators (which im only setting aside because i dont have the energy to get into it right now) it's still wholly unhelpful to the actual victims of these crimes cause like. you're not supporting them. you're not giving them resources, you're just satiating your lust for violence and revenge on their behalf. and worst of all you're making accusations of sexual abuse a life or death scenario (even more than they already are for some people)

how is a kid supposed to feel comfortable telling you their parent is abusing them if they think you'll KILL that parent for it? Kids usually love their parents, or at least know that without them they'll have to fend for themselves. (I personally would be afraid that whatever adult i ended up with would be worse, and seeing how the foster care system in the USA is I don't think that fear is unfounded) and tbh a lot of rape & sexual abuse is weird and complicated. I certainly don't want my siblings killed for what they did to me.

you can say "oh that's different" all you want, and I won't even argue that there are some things people do that I personally think make them deserving of death, but it is not my right to go out and kill them. I refuse to acknowledge that anyone, any government or group of people have the right to just decide to murder people. because we all know the people they'll be murdering first and foremost aren't the powerful people who traffic children.

According to Myah Ward and Brakkton Booker of Politico, this was Biden’s fifth trip to the Philadelphia area and his seventh to Pennsylvania this year. As he tries to win the state in 2024, the campaign has opened 24 field offices and outspent Trump there by a ratio of more than 4 to 1.   

Harris and Biden’s appearance in Philadelphia looked pretty much like a normal day in a normal presidential campaign season.

The same was not true of the presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, who was in a courtroom in Manhattan as Judge Juan Merchan instructed the jury in the criminal case against Trump for falsifying business records to hide a $130,000 payment to adult film actress Stephanie Clifford, also known as Stormy Daniels, to stop her account of their sexual encounter from becoming public in the days before the 2016 election.  

Legal analyst Joyce White Vance explained that to find Trump guilty, “[t]he jury must find unanimously that Trump created fraudulent business records and that he did it with the intent to influence an election through unlawful means.”

Trump and his supporters immediately took to the media to misrepresent the court system. Trump appeared to sleep through the jury instructions but later posted on social media: “I DON’T EVEN KNOW WHAT THE CHARGES ARE IN THIS RIGGED CASE…. THERE IS NO CRIME.” (He had told the judge on April 4, 2023, that he understood the charges against him.) Trump insisted that he had been railroaded by the fact that “a lot of key witnesses were not called,” although his own defense did not call them and he declined to testify himself. He called the judge “conflicted” and “corrupt,” and said “Mother Teresa could not beat these charges,” a reference to the Albanian-Indian Catholic nun canonized by the Catholic Church in 2016. 

Fox News host John Roberts misrepresented the judge’s instructions, launching a wave of fury on right-wing media stations and prompting Florida senator Marco Rubio to write: “This is exactly the kind of sham trial used against political opponents of the regime in the old Soviet Union.” Utah senator Mike Lee chimed in with his own attacks on Judge Merchan. Roberts later corrected his tweet, but it was too late to change the narrative.

Tonight, those two themes reappeared again and again on social media in both Trump’s feed and those of his supporters. Their frenzy suggested they are concerned about the jury’s verdict. Newsmax host Todd Starnes tweeted: “President Trump needs to get out of New York City RIGHT NOW! Fly back to Mar-a-Lago or another state that will provide him safe harbor.”

Indeed, it seems we are seeing the fear of accountability that has been missing from the top levels of American politics since President Gerald Ford pardoned President Richard M. Nixon in 1974. While Ford believed Nixon’s accepting the pardon was an admission of guilt for his participation in the coverup of the break-in at the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee in the Watergate Hotel before the 1972 election and anything else he might have done, Nixon never admitted such guilt.

Yesterday, Jodi Kantor of the New York Times reported that Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito’s story that his wife flew the upside down flag of distress favored by the January 6th rioters as a response to a hostile neighbor did not line up with accounts given by neighbors and a police report. 

Because of that distress flag, as well as the “Appeal to Heaven” flag that flew over his beach house, Alito is under increasing pressure to recuse himself from considering cases related to the events of January 6, including whether Trump is immune from prosecution for his actions surrounding the attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. Today Alito refused to recuse himself, blaming his wife for flying the flags—“My wife is fond of flying flags. I am not,” he wrote—and suggesting that anyone who thinks he should recuse himself is “motivated by political or ideological considerations.” 

And in what should almost certainly be read as trolling those who disagree with him, Alito, the author of the 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision taking away from American women the right to make their own decisions about their healthcare, wrote: “[M]y wife is an independently minded private citizen. She makes her own decisions, and I honor her right to do so.”  

Trump promptly congratulated Alito “for showing the INTELLIGENCE, COURAGE, and ‘GUTS’ to refuse stepping aside from making a decision on anything January 6th related.”

Yesterday, Jodi Kantor of the New York Times reported that Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito’s story that his wife flew the upside down flag of distress favored by the January 6th rioters as a response to a hostile neighbor did not line up with accounts given by neighbors and a police report. 

Because of that distress flag, as well as the “Appeal to Heaven” flag that flew over his beach house, Alito is under increasing pressure to recuse himself from considering cases related to the events of January 6, including whether Trump is immune from prosecution for his actions surrounding the attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. Today Alito refused to recuse himself, blaming his wife for flying the flags—“My wife is fond of flying flags. I am not,” he wrote—and suggesting that anyone who thinks he should recuse himself is “motivated by political or ideological considerations.” 

And in what should almost certainly be read as trolling those who disagree with him, Alito, the author of the 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision taking away from American women the right to make their own decisions about their healthcare, wrote: “[M]y wife is an independently minded private citizen. She makes her own decisions, and I honor her right to do so.”  

Trump promptly congratulated Alito “for showing the INTELLIGENCE, COURAGE, and ‘GUTS’ to refuse stepping aside from making a decision on anything January 6th related.” 

MAGA attacks on the rule of law affect real people’s lives. Ryan J. Reilly of NBC News reported today that after former Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Police officer Michael Fanone called Trump “authoritarian” with a “violence fetish” in front of the Manhattan courthouse yesterday, Fanone’s 78-year-old mother was swatted, with officers showing up at her home after reports of a murder there. Fanone protected the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, and went into cardiac arrest after a rioter assaulted him with a stun gun. “This is the reality of going up against or challenging Donald Trump…. These swatting calls are incredibly f---ing dangerous, especially when the target is somebody like my mom.”

ooh good question, that’s a tough one lol. I did actually think about Hawkeye’s speech in Chief Surgeon Who about how they’re all probably closer to each other than anyone else except their families when writing that, but I forgot that bit in WtK.

And like... lol it feels pretty damn nitpicky to criticize it, but honestly yeah if I was writing it I’d def at least phrase it a little differently. I don’t mind the Chief Surgeon Who line because Hawkeye says their closeness is a result of the “cruddy situation” and is just heartfeltly acknowledging it, whereas in Welcome to Korea the line is “Crazy thing is, hell though it is, I think I feel closer to the people in this hospital... than I've ever been to anybody else in my life... or ever expect to.”

Which frames their closeness as more of a silver lining of hell and even arguably a bit of a selling point lol, like sure the war sucks but I made the best relationships of my life here soooo. So I guess yeah I’d say it’s a misstep in that vein, but like, tbf it’s pretty minor all things considered. And in a sitcom about a bunch of friends in hell it’s probably a pretty tricky line not to cross, to celebrate those friendships while never incidentally referring to them as a ‘well at least we got this out of the war’ kinda thing. The fact that the show doesn’t do it more often and more directly is legit pretty impressive imo.

Honestly I’m not even sure where that line necessarily falls, like it’s kind of hard phrasing all this lol. I mean it’s true and fair and realistic that the friendships are a positive aspect of their being there, but imo they shouldn’t be something that justifies it or makes it feel worth it or that they’d value more than going home or that gives them mixed feelings about the war ending or something that makes them miss the war afterwards. It’s like, BJ missing Hawkeye and going to Maine? I’m cool with that. BJ thinking that he’s glad he got drafted because it brought him and Hawkeye together? Too far for me, at least if it’s meant to be positive or heartwarming or romantic or whatever. The 4077 getting super close in large part because of trauma bonding and trying to find ways to keep sane in the middle of horror? Great! The 4077 getting super close framed as a way the war enriched their lives? Not so great! Like, I know it’s basically the same sentiment, but it’s just about what aspect the narrative (of the show or fanfic or w/e) chooses to emphasize, I guess, for me.

But also I guess this is why I personally like to read negative stuff into the show’s relationships sometimes too lol, especially the later seasons when defying the army is less of a bonding activity. That’s just a me thing, not something I think everyone should do ofc.

And to that line in WtK’s credit (and a few others, like Hawkeye’s “there’s nothing here I’m gonna miss except you” in GFA) they are always pretty consistent about emphasizing how much being there sucks while acknowledging the friendships, so at least that’s something they never lose sight of and tend to add in juxtaposition.

ALSO all that aside I agree with you that it’s kind of a jarring line lol, imo it’s a very exaggerated statement. I mean he’s closer to them than his dad? Than he was with Carlye? But considering Trapper just vanished on him and Henry died I guess it’s a pretty understandable exaggeration. Plus I do kind of think/headcanon that Hawkeye has a tendency to overemphasize his immediate feelings with hyperbole. Like it’s what I thought when he told Carlye that everyone since her has been a pale imitation eg lol, like I truly don't think he's been sadly pining ever since and comparing everyone else he dates to her, but I think it feels that way when he's right in front of her again. And same when he’s reflecting on his war friendships after losing the two closest, maybe.

Like idt that’s necessarily a strong interpretatation of the text lol but as a headcanon it helps it work for me.

I read some stories with banging too, but it was never as explicit as some of the explicit romance stories I read either. Like I read a few YA's where yeah there was sex, but it was pretty tame when put next to an actual 18+ romance novel. "18+" Nobody would stop you buying them even if you were a fresh faced 11 yo. (The unicorn no fuck stories and magical fuck stories was hyperbole.)

Idk the one I remember from a YA I read back then was that it was kinda fumble fucking, or some throwaway sex line "she gave Blorbo a blowjob behind the school", while the 18+ story went into detail about how the dude bent her over a table, and what lingerie she was wearing, and other inside and outside details, and all the slippery slimy nitty gritty.

I main point is kinda around the idea that Heartstopper is somehow an outlier in YA for not having sex, when it really isn't, and there are a lot of (romantic) coming of age stories that don't feature sex on the page, or at all. Just noticed that a lot of people try to claim that people who don't like the author don't like her because "You don't like her bc she's the only one who doesn't write sex into her YA" when that just isn't the case.

And people called her out for being so aggressive towards a teen fan bc the fan asked about it, and she then defended herself and said it was bc she's aroace. And how she puts herself above other cis woman BL writers even tho she's also a cis woman writing BL like the people she's looking down on.

Maybe shoulda made it more clear, bc I honestly wrote that last paragraph like an idiot, I meant that it's just that she has a very weird persona as an author and it just makes her look weird with how she deflects criticism "I was so mean bc I'm aroace (and btw sex repulsed) so don't question me being rude abt it." or w/e while she herself constantly dishes out criticisms, even she does the same thing.
