what does it mean when you attach the suffix ' -gate' to words? like 'petgate', 'selfiegate', 'cupcakegate' etc?? i've seen them around the past couple of years and i still have no idea what it means, and googling it gives unclear/completely unrelated results

i never told anyone about this (until now ig lol) but a while ago i anonymously gifted one of my fav writers the lunar badge (bc if anyone should have it, it should be her since she writes about werewolves and vampires and all sorts of cool stuff! also she updates every full moon which i think is a really cool gimmick)

it's kinda dumb but whenever she posts i'll see the lil badge beside her handle and it always puts a smile on my face :)
