As a hopeful spiritual yet acutely logical realist, there is a definitive internal conflict with the idea of, "meant to be". On one hand I love the idea of letting go of control and seeing where the universe guides you, following dharma. On the other side, the thought of a bunch of particles, the unknown, guiding me anywhere is absurd and I realize the only thing guiding me is my choices. The realist in me practices, learns, and prepares so that when a situation presents itself I am equipped to handle it. Continuously trying to put myself in places and opportunities to gain growth and knowledge. This can feel overwhelming at times, because the weight of everything that happens is squarely on your shoulders. The spiritual part of me follows my internal dialogue and various empathetic signs of the universe(god), that I entertain loosely as guidance. Following the idea that my path should be the one of least resistance, that if I just tune out the noise I will find the flow I am meant to be in. This has allowed me to; overcome fears of being alone, find myself in places just because, learn to be extremely free flowing and observant, trust that I am where I am supposed to be. Often one side wins out over the other, and on this night, I answered the spiritual call to the mountains. I drove through pouring rain wondering what I was going to photograph besides a dreary fog that seemed to be everywhere. As I drove around listening to music with no plans of anywhere specific, the clouds began to break up and I thought of this spot, wondering if the fog would clear in time for sunset. It did and it was beautiful. Perhaps it was meant to be? RENEWING THE “COURAGE” INSTINCT!

Last week in the Northern California mountain vacation setting of Strawberry...pop. 86...nestled in a curve on mountain Hwy108 that winds its way over the Summit to connect to Hwy 395 on the Eastern Sierras...a momentous Williams Clan Family Moment occurred, just exactly as it did in the same rented mountain cabin.   Triumphantly and joyously our almost-one-year-old grandson, Ira, took his first steps exactly as his Uncle Brett, my son, did in 1983.

Yes, after trials and stumbles, little Ira achieved the status of an Upright Human,  joyously displaying his new life skill to the cheers of onlooking family members.

How often do we become discouraged...pushed down...empty...of the innate human story of triumph-born-of struggle. And the result? We settle on mediocrity, rather than soar toward life success.

Van Gogh’s statement captures the energy of what it means to choose soaring.  Soaring demands courage.  Soaring believes that Our Yesterday does not define Our Today. Soaring says Yes to New Possibilities or solving old problems. 

Life Renewal is the courage to not look back...and choose to look forward...in spite of yesterday’s hardships.

At the upcoming Olympic Games we are going to hear inspirational stories of how Olympic Champions like Simone Biles has shaped a life of triumph overcoming treacherous life challenges.

But, let’s know...Olympic Champions are not the only individuals who harness the story of courage to look expectantly forward...Today...and not wallow in the stumbles of Yesterday ! 

My young grandson, Ira, just like you...instinctively knew that adversity was not an enemy...but an opportunity.  Ira didn’t think falling down was failure in his quest to walk upright. Neither was  Ira being denied achieving his goal by falling down! Instead, he was gaining neuro-muscular skills.  He was challenged to learn and practice and acquire new skills to reach his goal of an upright human being!

Every courageous challenge you and I face...physical, emotional, relational, professional, spiritual...is an invitation to grow our life skills...to re-new, re-vitalize, re-envision, re-create LIFE. 

Courage is born on the wings of recreating our LIFE. Examples?  Challenging hip replacement demands the courage to seek uncomfortable physical therapy.  Creating new job skills demands the courage to redefine time to acquire new abilities. Every addiction demands the courage to seek help.  Overweight demands the courage to redefine health priorities.  A troubled marriage demands the courage to pursue the emotional discomfort of counseling.  End-of-life fears, doubts, unresolved life issues opens the door to reconcile the Past and invite conversations that have been held tightly away in our mind.  

Van Gogh’s quote is right on!  It is never, ever too late to courageously renew one’s life.  And, Yes, absolutely so...taking courageous action on any expression of life renewal is a challenge.

Our courage...yours and mine...everyone’s...demands compelling motivation. It’s a Get up & Go Decision because the time to re-create...act boldly moves on the impulse of NOW.

Moments like this, from this past fall, remind me about being prepared. From having the right gear, to anticipating the weather, each piece contributes to the captured image. But no matter how well I prep, no matter what I think I know, the anxiety of getting out there is still going to be there. For example, a classic worry for me is chapstick. Ya, I know it seems ridiculous, but when I am out waiting for the right light, the wind blowing, the cold drying out my skin...chapstick is an amazing comfort. Sometimes I even go as far as to think a whole trip will be ruined by chapped lips! So I overthink, overanalyze, and by the groans in my stomach I can tell I need to just find a gas station in the middle of nowhere and buy a $5 stick of moisture to calm my frazzled nerves. What is my point here? Maybe nothing much...but when I look back at these photos, I cant remember if I had a tube of lip lube or not. A view from #hwy108 of the small Douglas fire burning the underbrush near #sonorapass. As the sun light dimmed, the eery glow lit up the smoke filled sky. They say this lightning caused fire is acting much like a prescribed burn. Let's hope it stays small and beneficial. #emformdesign

Driving the gorgeous #hwy108 in the sierra nevada mountains in a #wrx is such a pleasure. We rounded a corner to look out over the valley, to our surprise, the fog was quickly flowing up into the mountains from below. The light, the fog, the car...perfect. I pointed the camera directly at the sun and let the lens flare do its magic!
