The boiling mud pots of the Námafjall or Hverir geothermal area near Mývatn Lake in northern Iceland formed when groundwater seeped down to magma intrusions where it was converted into acidic steam and fumerole gas.

Other Worlds of Iceland
Other Worlds of Iceland
Significant geothermal zones and volcanic landscapes throughout Iceland may give the impression of a primordial, preternatural planet. Yet, Icelanders have prevailed, despite the harsh and ever-challenging environment of their homeland. Such is the case of Möðrudalur, a remote farm settlement in Eastern Iceland protected by Mount Herðubreið, the “Queen of Icelandic Mountains.” Möðrudalur ranks…

Gunnuhver hverir, Ísland, 2023.
This amazing hot spring is about 15km from the potential site of a volcanic eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula in extreme SW ísland. The video only hints at the scene with a powerful plume of superheated steam erupting laterally. The steam is well above the boiling point of water. The site is noisy, and and it is damp as the cool air causes quick condensation of the steam. For anyone who, like me, is in fascinated awe of geologic processes, the scene is not to be missed!

Night on a Spooky Planet Image Credit & Copyright: Stéphane Vetter (Nuits sacrées)
Explanation: What spooky planet is this? Planet Earth of course, on a dark and stormy night in 2013 at Hverir, a geothermally active area along the volcanic landscape in northeastern Iceland. Triggered by solar activity, geomagnetic storms produced the auroral display in the starry night sky. The ghostly towers of steam and gas are venting from fumaroles and danced against the eerie greenish light. For now, auroral apparitions are increasing as our Sun approaches a maximum in its 11 year solar activity cycle. And pretty soon, ghostly shapes may dance in your neighborhood too.
