As both and empath and a rather paranoid individual at heart, Hriob has always made sure every aspect of his appearance and countenance is carefully maintained in its symbolism and meaning - his choice in weaponry is no exception.
Hriob is competent with a sword and hand-to-hand, especially Savate and Grappling techniques, but his favored/most skilled martial art revolves around the use of Polearms. He was taught by his adoptive mother as a pre-teen and teenager how to fight and survive when it became clear he would never be able to live a life of peace and quiet given his heritage and fate.
While he was first taught on the Halberd, he grew to prefer and eventually forge his own Glaive, a weapon similar to both the oft-simpler Fauchard and its far more improvised cousin, the War-Scythe. The latter was historically made not by practiced warriors in Europe, so much as peasants and farmers who had reason to fight back and, in this instance, rework their harvest scythes into something more combat-oriented. Even if his self-made weapon is indeed purpose-made for combat, reforged from dozens of far smaller spearheads smelted together, the sentiment remains that his is a weapon of a man who will fight for himself and those he cares about, but it in and of itself is not truly a weapon of War.
…if ever that changes, if he truly decides to make a weapon specifically for battlefields, he would probably make a polearm with a far straighter, double-sided blade such as a 'sword-spear' - with the lack of a blunted edge showing that he has decided to forego mercy as an option for the fighting ahead...
Tumblr media
Once Upon a Time, in a long-past lifetime, he made such a war-forged weapon for a young warrior named Hector during a conflict that would later be known as the Trojan war... said blade survived its owner and several centuries untarnished, even if it lost most of its pole, eventually being recovered by a wandering knight and restored to legend as the sword Durandal.

Gimme a brown for the meme with coloured dots I can't copy because phone LOL
🟤 Brown - What is a headcannon you are particularly proud of?
Tumblr media
[[...that's a surprisingly hard one. I've had this OC for years now, carefully added and tweaked things as I went. Literally everything about this guy is headcanon in one form or another... buuuuuut if I had to pick just one for now it'd be the headcanon that Hriob passively gains 'health' from being around trees.
Its such a simple thing on the surface, and its certainly fitting for a 'nature magic user' sorta vibe, but its the hows and whys of it all that make the most impact. Based off that single little 'factoid' came so many facets of what he can and can't do, everything from 'knows just enough 'healing magic' to basically just brute-force natural energies into wounds to try and get them to heal themselves faster' to 'has immunity to poisons and increased resistance to damage overall when around lots of foliage or a potent ambient magic source'... where specifically that last one technically includes alcohol in its list of 'poisons', which not only proved a strong turning point in one of his earlier character arcs with a certain long-lost Tengu, but also a current staple of his more 'silly' interactions.
Its a good example, at least for me, how one 'good' or 'random' idea can cement itself and branch out in many different directions, if only it can be discovered and used by a creative writer.]]

[ Well yes, sometimes what might be a good hiding spot ends up being a potential death trap. Blanket forts are protective & are v. comfortable. It helps that there’s something much more dangerous being who is there. ]
[Which is why even to this day he makes an exception for Blanket Forts. Hell, he’ll make the biggest and best ones he can for anyone and everyone he’s comfortable with, children being most of them of course.]

Mischief
Hriob typically is very good at acting ‘normal’ when he’s actually pulling off a prank or trick, but… thinking about it and/or setting up the dastardly deed? Witnessing his genius stupidity come to fruition? Expect him to have the widest, most irritably cocky and mirthful of shit-eating grins on his face, ear-to-ear at times, with or without his annoying brand of chuckling.

♘- fall outfit♟- winter outfit
Fall: Base outfit [including cloak] includes Wraps, pants, boots, separate wraps for ‘gloves’ and ‘socks’, sleeveless leather vest, and cloak. For when the cloak isn’t a good option [urban attire] it’s either a suit in dull autumn colors, or a hoodie in his size with a thin T-shirt underneath, jeans, hiking boots, and possibly a scarf.
Winter: Base outfit [including cloak] includes all of the above for fall, plus a long-sleeved shirt, second layer of pants for insulation, and a scarf tucked/incorporated into his cloak and hood. ‘Urban attire’ is still a suit though in dull ‘winter’ colors other than grey, or a weatherproof jacket over a hoodie with jeans, boots, and finger-less gloves, scarf still depending on local conditions.

Teenage Years: Hriob as a teenager gave off more of a ‘creepy/ominous’ vibe than Hriob typically does on occasion in present-day, though of course no more purposefully than he does now either… Then again, being partially possessed by the ghost of an inhuman power that is still in the process of re-incarnating into you tends to give off that sort of vibe, in retrospect.

Death: …his future is not set in stone, but taking current path and trends into consideration, Hriob will eventually become quasi-immortal… effectively slowing as he ages and eventually hitting a healthy and still relatively youthful ~50 years of physical age… after he passes a ripe old age of 150 or so. From that point on, he will continue to exist as such unless some other outside force ends his existence.
Either something kills him now, or something kills him far further down the road... the likelyhood of something ending him somewhere between is next to nil.

Childhood: You’d never have guessed it by how huge and beefy, and generally sociable he is now, but as a child Hriob typically was tiny, scrappy, relatively malnourished and shy… the kind to be withdrawn, not speak, and basically stay away from most people. Lyth was a rare, almost sole, exception to this.
Teenage Years: Also as a contrast to Hriob as a younger adult, as a teenager Hriob was also not easily associated with what we currently see him as… he was taller, perhaps, but still lanky and malnourished… he also was still far more silent than present-day Hirob, and took a habit of stalking people from a safe distance out of a turbulent inner conflict between paranoia, self-worth issues, and sociopathic tendencies, and his desperate need for human contact and social interaction.

Drinking headcanon for- Who am I kidding! What's the best thing that Hriob has brewed yet so far?
[It depends on what you qualify as ‘best’… He’s made experimental craft brews of a few interesting varieties using hops-alternatives, he’s recreated sake and vodka independently, he’s used alchemy to boost texture, aroma, flavor, and ludicrous alcohol content to incredible extremes on all counts simultaneously even if he’s yet to crack the ‘Oni-grade’ marker, and he’s even made the coffee equivalent, a.k.a. ‘The Midnight Oil’ and is looking into herbal teas…
…however, his best is still his original classic: alchemically enhanced mead made using hand-grown wheat and other grains, yeast carefully cultivated for the blend, a subtle blend of spices, and honey produced under the supervision of a powerful and agriculturally-minded insect youkai. The recipe itself has only changed so much, but the quality and potency since his first batch has improved more than tenfold, according to local critics.]

Favorite book? He can’t decide.
They find a genie and are granted three wishes, what do they wish for, and why? 1) To have a barrel of the strongest, most flavorful and perfect booze in existence. 2) To gain the wisdom necessary to sort out his own personal problems and help others with theirs that much better. 3) to set the genie free for a holiday, minimum, of their choosing.
What’s a quote (not from their universe), that you associate them with? “I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I intended to be.” -Douglas Adams
What is their most prized possession? His memory… what he still has, at least.
How do they celebrate their birthday? He… really doesn’t. Once a year sometime before the winter solstice he randomly gets a cake from Lyth, but he doesn’t know when he was born.

Grief, Destiny, Torture.
[Grief is something that would affect Hriob like a double-edged sword… any sufficiently damaging enough source of Grief would utterly break him, his confidence, his positivity, his appreciation for life and the world at large… but by the same token, it would be the biggest motivation to push him into maddening, unspeakable vengeance of the most nihilistic, merciless, and utterly complete and total sort. Woe betides any who thinks that hurting him where it hurts most is a good idea…
Destiny is again a funny topic to try and discuss concerning Hriob… he doesn’t seem to have a fixed fate in regards to what and how he grows or what that entails or accomplishes… if anything, he’s the sort of person that instead either amplifies or breaks the destinies of those around him. What his future will hold in store for him is anyone’s guess, and no whiff of prophecy is going to stick to him anytime soon.
Torture is… a touchy subject. He’s withstood a lot of what others would consider torture, some of it self-inflicted and some of it withstood from without, some of it leaving no impact and some of it scarring body and psyche alike. While it would take extreme circumstances to make him consider putting others into what he considers ‘torture’, at least any serious sort, he can very easily do so when brought to a state of rage and vengeful hatred towards someone… especially since making someone wish they were dead is a questionable, yet clearly superior alternative to actually killing them.]

Loss. Memory. Childhood
[The thought of losing someone, anyone, is something Hriob has a hard time accepting… and fears greatly. However, with other things, he is a stoic and accepting individual what takes other forms of loss, such as time wasted, pain endured, and other setbacks, in stride. In his own Utilitarian way of thinking, expecting perfection is a fallacy in any regard, and shouldering the bad in life is the only way to not only appreciate the good, but to get it in the first place… while this sort of mentality has led him to extremes of self-isolation and overexertion many times in the past when it comes to working on his skills and abilities, the results are still hard to argue with.
Memory is a finicky thing with Hriob… currently, he could be said to have an eidactic, or nearly photographic memory when he applies himself, not only in regards to what he sees, but what he hears and what his sixth sense for aura sensing tells him. He has been known not only to identify spells and individuals based on their auras alone, but to deconstruct and learn spells simply by remembering how they ‘looked’ to him, and track people by the auras he ‘remembers’ them giving off… However, he still has moments of tunnel-vision where he forgets minor details that can throw off the end result of any given task or responsibility he is dealing with, and due to Post-traumatic stress he still cannot remember 90% of his own childhood…
As for his Childhood itself, Hriob’s was… scary. He took sanctuary with his adoptive mother Lyth off and on, learning much from her and growing a taste for quality baked goods during that time, but also learning how to fight and brawl like his life depended on it from her as well… which ultimately served him well. Most of his childhood beyond that was spent in various forests, usually under attack from woodland creatures natural and supernatural alike, Goblins most prominently.]

abandon
[Being abandoned is one of Hriob’s greatest fears… second only to being betrayed by those he cares about. This was actually a large part of what shaped his childhood… he stayed distant, watching from afar and keeping to himself, not only because he didn’t want to be found by those he knew hated and hunted him, but because he didn’t want to get attached to someone, only to lose them or have them stab him in the back…
…to say he has trust issues is an understatement, even now. He’s done a lot to work past his fears, given how many friends he now has, but… even then, a part of him keeps preparing for the day when that all falls down around him.]

Dream
[Dreams are a funny thing, yet again for Hriob… He has a powerful imagination, that while normally shackled into his creative process and analytical mindset during the day, is given free reign during the night. Taking into account how varied his experience are, and how much he truly restrains his emotional response half of the time, his dreams can be chaotic, explicit, nonsensical, violent, or any number of things… even vaguely prophetic. However, 99% of the time he never remembers any of his ‘night visions’.]

Aspiration, yes. Why not throw in Forgive there as well?
[Aspiration is a tricky thing for Hriob… he technically has very simple, basic aspirations if anything. Most of his long-term goals tend to be something like ‘be a better person’, or ‘help those I care about’… simple goals that have no clear beginning and end. It’s the specific goals with him that you need to py attention to… things like ‘make something to help this person with this problem’, ‘offer advice to this person on this issue’, or ‘protect this person from this threat as preemptively as possible’.
Forgiveness is… also tricky for him, mostly due to one of the dualities of his nature. On the one hand, he tries to be a calm, understanding individual that can forgive and let slide a lot of little things, and his personal philosophy stresses to him that letting the minor things go is in everyone’s best interest most of the time… but, on the other hand, his core personality is untrusting, paranoid, and can easily be angered by the actions and attitudes of others that irritate him. At his best, he will always forgive even if he never forgets or truly lets it go that the other hurt him someohow… at his worst, he is obsessive about holding grudges, vindictive to an incredible degree until the other party has either guaranteed somehow that it won’t happen again… or is dead.]

12- How does their education and intelligence – or lack thereof - reflect in their speech pattern, vocabulary, and pronunciations? Hriob, despite being self-taught, is a very intelligent individual, and it shows plainly in his diction. Granted, he can control how ‘educated’ his word-choice is, but his speech patterns typically show it anyways… especially when discussing high-end skill-focused items and the like, areas where he excels or has studied.
32- How does your character react to stress situations? Defensively? Aggressively? Evasively? Hriob deals with stress in stages… first he evades, then he defends, and if it gets bad or insistent enough where he cannot simply endure or evade, he turns aggressive… He does, however, often deal with a ridiculous amount of stress, so if you see him when he isn’t smiling naturally it’s almost a given that he’s at one of the first two stages already for one reason or another.
[41- Already answered]
