The Inn on the Park: Four Seasons makes its mark in The Jet Age

Quick, when you think of 'The Jet Age', what images come to your mind?  Bond flicks with Sean Connery?  The Rat Pack?  Jet-setting to exotic locales around the world?  Well, as far as I'm concerned, one of the most vivid local images that comes to my mind is a luxury resort located just a couple of miles south of my childhood home.

The Inn on the Park was a luxury resort complex built in suburban Toronto in the early 60s which seem to embody all the images of that era in one 16-acre package.  A recent piece in Torontoist nicely encapsulates the story of the hotel which effectively launched the Four Seasons chain and the luxury brand that emerged from it.

Like most things in life, resorts such as this are very much a function of a particular time and place.  Built initially as a resort in a quasi-rural setting, the city of Toronto grew up around it, eventually rendering the hotel obsolete.  Of course now the business model of Four Seasons (as it is for other high end hospitality brands) is not to own real estate, but to manage it, a process that includes placing its brand on the bricks and mortar.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to dust off my old Fly Me to the Moon LP and hear Frank belt out optimistic tunes from a by-gone era.
