Bats and Killing
Something that I think bat fandom doesn't separate well enough is the difference between someone dying in a fight, and killing someone as a punishment.
When Dick beat the Joker to death in Last Laugh, he wasn't upset because the Joker died while he was trying to save Tim. He was upset with himself because he though Tim was already dead; the violence was pure anger. Pure punishment. He wasn't protecting anyone.
Same with Blockbuster. Blockbuster was making threats, yes, but Dick wasn't pushing someone out of the way of the bullet. Catalina killed Blockbuster executioner style in Nightwing (1996) #93. He's unarmed, laying on the floor, already had the shit beaten out of him....and he dies from a bullet to the back of the head.
On the other hand, the much discussed issue of Nightwing (1996) #146, where Dick lets a man get electrocuted in order to save a baby, doesn't effect him very much. Because they were literally in the air, and he had to hurt that guy so he could pluck an infant out of the air.
Like, people have always died in comic. Heroes watch bad guys die pretty often in the course of an active fight. But they're supposed to be the best of the best; killing someone who is unarmed and not actively threatening anyone is so different.
It's the difference between Bruce leaving Joker to die in the helicopter in Death in the Family because he doesn't have time to save him, and Jason demanding Bruce not lift a finger as the Joker is shot in the head. Regardless of whether you think the character deserves to die, or whether they were right to do it, not acknowledging just how different these things are makes the whole conversation pointless.

After the German embargo on Eurofighters, Saudis now target Rafale fighters

Saudi Arabia has its eye on the French-made Rafale fighter, after its long wait for the Eurofighter proved to be useless due to Germany's reluctance to export weapons to the country.
According to French media reports, the kingdom is considering acquiring 100 to 200 Rafale combat jets.
According to the French newspaper "La Tribune", in addition to acquiring the 100-200 Rafale fighters, Saudi Arabia wants to participate in the joint European program to develop a new FCAS fighter.
However, the French newspaper reports that "the signing of a contract is still very hypothetical".
Germany announced in July that it would not allow the delivery of new Eurofighter Typhoon jets to Saudi Arabia. The 72 Eurofighters of the Saudi Air Force are the second most numerous type of fighter, behind the Boeing F-15 manufactured in the USA.
The largest fleet of fighters in Saudi Arabia is the F-15.
The change could have irritated the United Kingdom, which hoped to deliver 48 jets of the type to Saudi Arabia, whose contract was awarded to BAE Systems five years ago.
The export of weapons to Saudi Arabia was blocked by Germany after the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey, in 2018, taking a much tougher approach than the main allies such as the US, France and Great Britain.
Saudi Arabia's participation in the Yemen war was also cited as the reason for the blockade. The pressure from the business-friendly Free Democratic Party (FDP) has been increasing to reconsider the position after Saudi Arabia reached a ceasefire with the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen last year.

Still on the FCAS, the Saudis are not interested in a contract, but in a partnership. In addition, according to La Tribune, Saudi Arabia would consider participating in the European aircraft project of the future if the agreement with Germany failed.

Catalina Island - Airport Loop
7 February 2023
Today’s ride was only 5 miles longer than my ride three days ago in Long Beach (30 miles away and visible from here), but what a completely different ride! Lots of climbing. Remote gravel roads with no vehicles and spectacular views of the ocean. And the touristy charm of Avalon itself.
There were two big climbs, and two big descents. The climb out of Avalon on Stage Road was tough, but amazing. It took about an hour for me to climb the three steep miles to the 1500’ crest. The paved road to the airport was rolling with great views back towards LA and the snow-capped San Gabriels and San Bernardinos. I made it to the airport in about two hours and stopped at the little cafe to recover and top off my water bottle.
The descent down Rancho Escondido towards the ocean was wonderful, though the road was washboarded in places and there were rutted sections from January’s rains. The long climb up Middle Ranch Road was gradual, except for a steep pitch at the top before regaining the divide. And then it was an incredible downhill back into Avalon, with hands on the brakes the whole way.
Along the way I saw a fox, a couple of jeep tours, and one small bison herd. Fortunately, they were well off the road. Apparently (I haven’t been able to confirm this story), a cyclist encountered a bison a couple of weeks ago and had to get helicoptered to the mainland!
There was plenty of evidence of the heavy rains in January. Running water, including some streams flowing across the road. Washouts and ruts and debris and recently cleared roads. And everything was green!
I rode out of Avalon a little after 7:30. I was back in town by 1:00. This was a great ride, but required some work! It would be fun to turn this into a multi-day bikepacking trip - camping at Little Harbor and maybe adding a trip out to Two Harbors. There are some good accounts online, including this one at Gravelstoke.
Yesterday, I rode a much shorter loop out of Avalon. It’s sort of a standard golf cart loop, but was a great introduction on a bike.

in other news!! I learned today that there is a pair of bald eagles in the mountains nearby that has been nesting there since 2016. it's the first known pair in those mountains in over 70 years. they've hatched multiple chicks there, and their nesting area has its own tiny protected area set by the Forest Service.
From what I read, it's believed that the pair are children of eagles from Catalina Island, where an aggressive rehabilitation campaign was carried out after the DDT crisis -
In the 1980s, scientists began to reintroduce bald eagles to the Channel Islands by helicoptering into the nests, dangling from a 100-foot cable, rescuing the fragile eggs and substituting them with fake ones. The eggs were incubated in a lab, and the chicks returned to the nest as soon as they hatched.
Today, more than 60 eagles live on the Channel Islands and Santa Catalina Island, where 24 chicks have fledged from nests this year, making for the most successful breeding season since recovery began over 35 years ago.
so eagles reintroduced on Catalina have raised chicks that are repopulating areas of the mainland - woo! - but I was wondering: what about before the DDT crisis? why no eagles then?
because there aren't natural lakes in the San Gabriels. duh. there weren't bodies of fresh water for the eagles to hunt in before the rivers were dammed! the construction of dams aligns pretty well with the precipitous decline of the eagle population due to hunting and DDT, so eagles and fresh water in the San Gabriels essentially haven't coexisted until now.

Hardest GTA Missions
Disclaimer: These are specifically based on “general consensus” opinion. Some of these missions do not give me too much trouble these days. Sure, I’ve had to repeat these several times as a kid, but as a 27-year-old, I kind of know how to complete these missions. NOTE: I will NOT be counting the “Definitive Edition versions, mainly because the missions got a little too simplified. Plus, let’s be real, that version sucks ass!
1. “Wrong Side of the Tracks” (San Andreas) - “All we had to do was follow the damn train, CJ!” The most infamous of all “Mission Failed” cutscenes. This mission has you and Big Smoke hop into a dirt bike and well, follow a damn train, while Smoke has to shoot at some Vagos gang members on top of the locomotive. Only thing is, his aim is worse than an Imperial Stormtrooper. My advice, stay just on the right side of the opposite track, and when you get out of the first tunnel, despite Smoke’s advice, do NOT take the high road on the right! You will, at no point, be in any good position for Smoke to be able to actually hit his shots. And the Vagos have a few more hit points than the average NPC. Now this mission does not give me trouble these days.
2. “Demolition Man” (Vice City) - Hot take time: I ave always completed this mission in my first try. I guess the reason this game can give people trouble because they’re not used to helicopter controls. This is the first mission to introduce flight controls in any GTA game, minus the Dodo plane in GTA II, but that’s impossible to control. Tommy is tasked with controlling an RC Goblin to plant bombs on a nearby construction sight. There is a time limit, and any construction workers will try to destroy the Goblin on sight. Just chop them up with the rotors. Also, there are rent-a-cops that will shoot at it too, but their aim can be compared to that of an Imperial Stormtrooper.
3. “Bomb Da Base, Act II” (GTA III) - What makes this mission so difficult is the sensitive sniper rifle controls, on top of the fact that 8-Ball is defenseless and will make a beeline to his destination on the cargo ship where he will plant his explosives. And it doesn’t matter whether or not you kill any Cartel members in his way, as he will not stop to take cover. Pick up an adrenaline pill before getting to the vantage point, and this mission will be simpler.
4. “The Exchange” (GTA III) - The final mission in GTA III, and boy is it a doozy! For starters, you are stripped of all your weapons and armor, and you gotta high-tail it to the garage to pick up an armor pickup. Then you gotta chase Catalina’s chopper all the way to Cochran Dam, and fight through countless Cartel members. Make sure you pick up their weapons and ammo. Finally, once you get to the helipad, you must shoot down Catalina’s chopper, and it can fire explosives at you.
5. “Keep Your Friends Close…” (Vice City) - The final mission of Vice City, and they sure saved on of the hardest parts for last. You must defend you safe from endless waves of Sonny’s goons, then you must chase down and kill that back-stabbing prick Lance. He’s packing a Kruger assault rifle with pinpoint accuracy, and it doesn’t help you get countless others shooting at you. After you give Lance Vance his last dance, you’ll need to go down to the lower levels to replenish your health and armor, before returning to your safe to dispose of Mafiosi stealing your money. Finally, you have the ultimate showdown against Sonny, who sics many of his goons against you. He and Lance have more hit points than the average NPC. My advice, pack enough MP5 ammo, complete the pizza delivery and vigilante missions for a permanent health and armor increase respectively.
6. “Espresso-2-Go!” (GTA III) - Here’s a mission that has you driving around the ENTIRE city, on a time limit! Claude is tasked with smashing 9 coffee stands that the Cartel is using as fronts for their SPANK distribution. There are 5 coffee stands in Staunton Island, 2 in Portland, and 2 in Shoreside Vale. The Definitive Edition version is just way too easy, due to having a GPS route that’s unlocked once you find a coffee stand. Oh, did I mention the timer doesn’t actually start until you smash the first stand? And it also doesn’t help that one of the coffee stands is in Mafia territory, aka “Shotgun Hell.” Rockstar actually changed the mission in later versions of the game so that instead of overpowered pump-action shotguns that can blow you up in one shot, they instead are packing Uzis. Complete “Marked Man” before starting this mission, that way you’d have Ray’s bulletproof Patriot to use.
7. “Death Row” (Vice City) - Here is a mission that doesn’t personally give me too much trouble nowadays. Tommy is tasked to rescue Lance at the dump, all the way across the city from the mission starting point, from Diaz’s men who are torturing him. You are given a time limit in the first half of the mission via Lance’s health bar that’s deteriorating. As long as you know the best route to take, you should be fine. Once you get to the dump, you’ll need to deal with a couple handfuls of Diaz’s men. Just keep locking and shooting with an SMG. Once you rescue Lance, you’ll have to drive him to the hospital. On your way, you have more of Diaz’s goons chasing you down, like cops if you have a high wanted level. My advice, take the dump truck to the hospital, provided it doesn’t despawn after the firefight.
8. “Supply Lines…” (San Andreas) - As I mentioned in my “Worst Characters” post, this is a mission you actually do NOT have to complete in order to complete the story. It is, however, required for 100% completion. And this mission is TERRIBLE. CJ is tasked in controlling an RC Baron to destroy Berkley’s courier service. The Baron is damn near impossible to control, the couriers are spread out throughout San Fierro, and they’re packing Uzis, and WILL shoot your plane on sight! To make matters worse, you’re on a time limit via a fuel meter. This mission is so bad, even David Cross, the voice behind Zero, HATED hearing his voice in this mission!
9. “The Driver” (Vice City) - Ok, I’ll admit, it actually took me maybe two or three tries to complete this mission. Tommy is tasked in recruiting Hillary King as a getaway driver for an upcoming bank heist. But here’s the catch: Hillary will only drive for you if you can beat him in a street race. I’m not heist planner, but shouldn’t it be the other way around? Never mind. What’s really blazes my balls is the fact that he drives a Sabre Turbo, whilst you are stuck driving a Sentinal sedan. His car is programmed to stay glued to the road, and the cherry on top is the fact you get a 2-star wanted level. The only way to complete this mission is a Deus Ex Machina…
10. “Three Leaf Clover” (GTA IV) - Ever seen the 1995 film “Heat?” That’s exactly what this highly action-packed mission is. Niko is tasked in helping Packie McReary pull a bank heist. The escape from the cops is the hardest part. Niko, Packie, and his brother Derrick must shoot through several N.O.O.S.E. agents on foot, packing M4 carbine rifles, and even shooting their way through the subway. Losing your wanted level in the end can be tough, as the cops are remorseless. The past few times I’ve played through GTA IV, I was able to pass this mission in one try. Just make sure you got enough body armor, and keep using cover every time you can find it! One of the best missions in my favorite GTA game!

USAF tests the ARRW hypersonic weapon five months after a test that did not work

The U.S. Air Force (USAF) on Saturday tested a prototype of the AGM-183A Air-lanced Rapid Response Weapon (ARRW) hypersonic weapon after a hiatus since a failure occurred during a test in March.
The service said in an August 21 statement that a B-52H Stratofortress launched a full operational prototype of ARRW, known as the full round, off the coast of Southern California.
The USAF said it obtained new "valuable" insights into the capabilities of the missile, but did not say if it considered the test a success.
"Although we did not discuss the specific objectives of the test, this test acquired valuable and unique data and was intended to promote a series of programs such as ARRW and Hypersonic Attack Cruise Missile (HACM)," the statement said. "We also validate and improve our testing and evaluation capabilities for the continuous development of advanced hypersonic systems."
The ARRW was supposed to be the first hypersonic weapon of the U.S. military to achieve operational status. A successful test took place in December, with a peak speed five times the speed of sound, after several failed attempts.
USAF Secretary Frank Kendall said the service will not buy ARRW after the failed March test. The U.S. Air Force said it will still finish the last two full test flights of the program to collect data to help in future hypersonic programs.

“What the hell are you doing back there?” Swerving through the streets, trying as best she could to avoid running into the chimera that seemed to be everywhere.
“Don’t worry about it, just get us to the university!” Currently in the back of the van, pulling out pieces of armor that she had brought with her in a large bag. Several weapons as well. Piece by piece she started fitting the silver armor over herself.
“We’re almost there, just have whatever the hell that is ready when we arrive. I don’t think we’re gonna have a warm welcome..” typing furiously on his laptop.
Equiping his own gear before cracking his neck. “We’ll handle the welcome wagon, you just get to the Dean’s office and start doing your thing. I just hope you actually know what you’re doing for once..”
“I know what I’m doing..I can fix this, at least part of it. Trust me.”
The van finally swerved and screeched to a halt near the overgrown jungle section of the university..
Getting out of the van and pulling both her revolvers from their holsters. “If anyone in close range can hear this, our team just arrived at the university. It looks like someone beat us to the punch, we’re gonna need as much backup as we can get.”
She flipped out of the way of a boulder suddenly thrown her way from the entrance.
“Donovan, get to the dean’s office now!”
“On it! Just be careful, whatever the hell is in there isn’t taking any prisoners..” Unfolding his scythe and heading off in the direction of where the dean’s office hopefully still was.
Rushing through the entrance and dodging a few vines that swung at him, punching one away and watching it burn up. “Oh fuck..it’s a massacre in here..but I don’t see any hostiles..”
“Are they..” Just managing to avoid a barrage of stone shards flung at her. “I’m picking up vitals!”
“Attention, this is Laurel Liddell! We need evac at the university, we need evac and medical attention immediately!”
Picking up just enough of the garbled transmission to realize where he had to go. “This is Doctor Hadrian Ves, I’m going to need evac at the university, meet me there..” Turning and kicking on the boosters to his flight suit, blasting off toward the university.
“I’ve got one out, there’s one in the mud! Hurry!” She had managed to get Shani, what was left of her away from the area as Blaine rushed to grab Nilah.
Clicking a button on his mask to filter out any of the toxin that he might have breathed in. The cestus weapons he used, combined with brute strength were enough to crack through the mud, dragging out Nilah.”
“I got the other one!” Recognizing the woman who technically worked for them as she pulled Iris out to safety. “You’ll be alright, just hold on.”
“Last one!” Running back out with Arvinda and laying her next to the others. “Where is the damn..”
“Right here..” Landing and immediately going to work on the four women. He had brought a small bag with him and knew he could keep them alive. “Can you move a little quicker with that helicopter?” Glancing in the distance as a navy medic helicopter approached. “Where’s the hostile?”
Struggling to get by all the chimera on his way to the office, finally forcing his way in and shutting the door behind him..”Oh great it’s a fucking mess..” Plugging his laptop into the Dean’s control desk. “Ok..you can do this...just have to get past a war era ai’s security..oh boy..”
“We don’t know..she should be here right..where would she have...” Her words were interrupted as a vine shot out and wrapped around her body, dragging her back into the chamber. She managed to fire enough shots at it to break it apart but found herself looking up at a few boulders about to fall and crush her. A green haired figure standing behind them.
An instant before it happened one of the boulders was suddenly shattered by a rocket fired from Catalina’s wrist. She stepped through the entrance way, fully covered in a rather unique silver armor. Several weapons strapped to her sides and across her back.
She fired another rocket, blasting the second boulder back to the green haired figured who swatted it away.
“Go help with the wounded, I’ll buy you some time.”
“Alright bitch..let’s go..”
Her helmet started displaying various statistics as she scanned the room, the weapons on her wrist switching to flamethrowers and burning away the vines that reached for her. “Donovan you better be working on something up there!”
