You need to learn how to fall 6/10
Hangster (and IceMav) - Bradley is too tall to be a naval aviator and instead becomes a sky diver, specialising in spin recovery. He is a civilian contractor to the military to teach pilots how to survive parachute spins from ejections. A more in-depth version of this post.

~30 months Later…
                “Dr Bradshaw!”
                “Ah. Lieutenant Seresin.”
                “You remember me.”
“You name and rank are on your uniform.”
                “Think you still remember me.”
                “You’re very sure of that.”
                “I like to be memorable.”
“Hmm. I’m sure you do. Can I help you?”
“Just wanted to see if you’d be interested in that drink.”
“We’re in Corpus Christi. This isn’t my home. I believe I told you to look me up if you were ever in North Island.”
“So you do remember me. And this is my home base, so halfway there right?”
Bradley sighs, it feels like a bad idea for so many different reasons, but he could do one drink. It’s not like he has any other plans for the evening before returning to the base accommodations he’s been put up in for this training stint and even if it does end up a one-night stand he’s kind of horny enough that he’d go for it right now. He hasn’t had sex in a few months, which isn’t actually a problem, he’s not
“Sure, okay. We can go for a drink. As long as it’s not on base.”
                “Deal.”
One drink turns into dinner, turns into another drink and then coffee. They end up talking for a couple of hours, before they realize it’s after ten and they both have early starts. He hadn’t expected to enjoy Jake’s company quite this much, his sense of humor biting, but intelligent conversation, engaged and invested conversationalist. He’s pleasantly surprised. Jake, and he is Jake now, walks him to his car, parked in the far end of the lot under the shade of a tree in the hopes it’ll keep in cooler in the Texas heat.
“Thanks for agreeing to have that drink with me…”
Bradley pulls a slightly depreciating face, knows he’s maybe acted a little like a jerk.
“Thanks for inviting me. Again. I enjoyed myself.”
The kiss is soft, dry and gentle, nothing more than a brush of lips and he’s too stunned to do anything more about it, to chase his lips for a deeper taste. Instead Jake tips an imaginary hat at him and walks away and he wonders what the hell just happened. That’s not the way he thought their evening would end.
…             …             …
The next day his phone vibrates with a new message and it’s not from a number he recognizes.
>>When I’m in North Island I’m looking you up.
                Huh.
He’s not sure if that’s a threat or a promise.
He carefully saves Jake’s contact details in his phone.
…             …             …
Despite their conversation over dinner he hadn’t really put two and two together and realized that Jake was in Corpus Christi to also be an instructor. He should have thought about it, realized when Jake was talking about instructing he was referring to right then and now. Their paths cross on multiple occasions but Jake doesn’t ask him out again. He’s nothing but professional, courteous and friendly. His eyes and lips seem flirty, but Bradley’s pretty sure he’s projecting now, completely imagining it. Neither of them mention the message, and he finds himself staring at it simply to remind himself that he didn’t imagine receiving it.
Maybe he thought Bradley was interesting or attractive, but since their dinner, since they’re working together, there’s nothing actually there. Despite the text message he’d received, which he’d carefully saved into his contacts, Jake hasn’t asked Bradley out again, and he’s not sure whether he’s disappointed or relieved. He’s only there for two weeks, the training short and intensive, he’ll be back in nine months to cover other things, reiterate what he’s already covered (and in five months for a new intake of students). By then they will have had more experience, better understanding of what he’s trying to teach them. He does the rounds of goodbyes before heading for the airstrip and the plane he’s catching back to North Island.
“It’s been nice working with you. Thank you for making your expertise available,” Jake says, shaking his hand and Bradley nods and smiles, the formality of Jake’s tone not matching the intensity of his gaze. It’s a sharp contrast to the more antagonistic man he met a couple of years ago, contrasting further with the charming and flirty guy he ended up having dinner with and he wonders which one is truly Jake Seresin.
…             …             …
Days later, working on a research paper and he feels like he’s going to vibrate out of his skin. He really needs to fucking jump out a plane, confused and frustrated for no reason he can pin down and he wants the clarity that falling through the air gives him. He redoes all his pack jobs. Unrolls and checks, realizes he’s maybe a little distracted and asks Mav to check them for him as well, before he does it again, his mind finally settling into the familiar rhythm. He convinces Ice to take him up for a jump, specifically a hop and pop, wants to spend as much time floating down as possible, Mav on pick up within the drop zone.
It’s a textbook landing, he times the flares out perfectly, the velocity of approach slowing and he still prepares for impact but there’s almost none, jumping down a step would have been worse and he almost bounces up simply with the amount he’s bent his legs. He pulls in the toggles, tugging on the lines to stop them from gusting and begins pulling it all in.
“Nice, you look almost blasé about the whole thing.”
“Yeah, it was nice and smooth.”
“You look like you belong up there… something one of your instructors said to us once, about you being a natural. You do look like you born to it.”
“It’s my safe space, which I know seems weird to you, but it’s just….”
“Everything comes into pinpoint focus and you can’t imagine being anywhere else,” Mav provides and Bradley catches his eye and nods.
“Yeah. Also it’s where I feel the most alive. Nothing else matters.”
“Hmm…” Mav agrees, and he slaps Bradley on the shoulder, helps him unclip and roll. “You know that’s how I feel about flying. Seeing you just… step back onto earth, reminded me of how I feel about when I step out of a plane.”
“Like you immediately want to get back up there?”
                “Yeah.”
“Well, I have you to thank, you know. I know this probably isn’t what you imagined for me. I know you always wanted to keep me safe. But when I decided on this, I thought I’d have to fight you on it, that I’d have to fight both of you. Instead you both just… supported me. I know that can’t have always been easy.”
“Loving you, supporting you? Easiest thing we’ve ever done in our lives. Trust me. Stopping ourselves from protecting you, wrapping you in bubble wrap and stopping you from making mistakes… that’s been the hardest, especially when it was in direct conflict with the first. You’re happy. Do you know how happy that makes me?”
“Really happy?” Bradley jokes, although he knows it’s going to miss the mark, the expression on Mav’s face far too serious. Apparently they’re having this heart-to-heart, out here in the middle of tussocky almost desert.
“I mean, it does but also… I could die tomorrow and would feel content that I had done the best job I could. That we could. We knew we would never replace your dad, never wanted to. But we’ve always wanted to be there for you.”
He doesn’t say anything, just grabs for him and hugs tight. Mav doesn’t mention his dad very often, and Bradley’s pretty sure there’s shit there he’s likely never dealt with, is aware that Mav has nightmares but has never asked about them and realizes in that moment that he might in fact have nightmares about Bradley himself. Fuck. He hugs him tight again.
“You’ve done a great job Mav, you and Ice have both done a great job.”
“Well, you know Ice. He can’t be anything but excellent at everything he does.”
Bradley laughs, and the moment eases from the somberness back to their usual banter but he gives Ice an extra tight hug when they pick him up from the hangar and he just laughs at the quirked eyebrow he gets in response.
…             …             …
>>You have any idea how hard it was to keep my hands to myself?
Bradley stares down at the message. It’s from the contact number he has marked for Jake Seresin but there’s just the other message he never responded to and now this. He’s on the other side of the country, hell, he went on a fucking date two nights ago… and now he’s staring at his phone and wondering what the fuck is going on. First off he needs to make sure this is actually Jake.
>>Jake?
>>Yep. Thought I better show you that I can be professional before I started talking about how I love watching you walk. Your legs are fucking gorgeous, want to get my hands all over them.
He swallows, skin feeling tight and hot from a single fucking message and okay, he hadn’t been reading things wrong, Jake clearly just felt like he needed to prove something. He
>>I’d let you.
>>Got to get myself to North Island first. I want to date you.
Oh. He hadn’t been expecting that. Hadn’t expected Jake Seresin to challenge him, to be this persistent, to still want… well, him. It’s been nearly three years since he met him at Top Gun, about two weeks since he saw him in Corpus Christi… He’d sort of thought Jake would pass him by, had been okay with that.
                Before.
Hadn’t ever seriously thought he’d be in this position. This guy has either being playing a long game, or he’s definitely more interested in Bradley than Bradley ever though.
                So.
                Now?
He doesn’t know. Doesn’t want to let him pass him by at the very least. Not without at least trying.
The sound of laughter has him looking up, Mav giggling because he’s just provoked Ice enough into rapping him across the knuckles while cooking dinner. Fuck. He realizes then that for Jake his tiny little family could be a deal breaker. Ice the recently promoted COMPACFLT, Mav a captain, both of them pretty legendary and intimidating apparently. Never to him of course, but to someone else in the service… he doesn’t know. Jake could take one look at his family and just… turn around and walk away. Jake’s waited this long though, but it feels weird now, having Jake not know this part of his background when he already knows so much else.
He wants to tell him, in person, so he can read his reaction. He’ll be seeing him in five months. If he’s serious about dating then they’re always going to have periods of time apart…
>>You have anything again long-distance dating?
>>Just the inability to touch. You letting up on the whole North Island thing?
>>Yeah. Think I am.

Dreaming Reality
cw: Darkrai Cyrus, pokemkn hybrid au, slightly possessive Cyrus (very subtle)
pairing: Cyrus/Reader
Newmoon Island was desolate. Mostly rocky with only a small area of greenery that held a grotto inside it. You found it difficult at times to call it home. There were no pokemon that lived on the island, excluding a specific one. The nearest store required a long boat ride back to the main land. Then you needed to fret over what to bring with you. It was always messy.
Your home had become something more… functional than the tent you had originally pitched on it. The pain of hiring contractors to build out here remained fresh on your mind, especially with local rumours making it harder. Though, they absolutely did not have to worry about the nightmare being doing anything to them. He was too busy hiding in said grotto from earlier to avoid all of them. Fascinatingly, that was the first time you saw him express any form of jealousy, too, as he had wanted you to hide with him in the shade of the trees.
The next time came when you decided that more supplies were needed to live somewhat comfortably again. Heading out to meet the boat after scheduling for a pickup, you had watched the Darkrai's face shift from the area of the small cabin that he had claimed. “You are leaving again?” Cyrus's voice was strange, hypnotic – It was something impossibly calming and deep. You feared that if you listened too long, you would fall into slumber while doing something. He walked towards you, eerie shadows seemingly swirling as he moved.
“I'm running low on some bathroom essentials,” you mumbled, trying to fight the odd stupor that had begun to claim your mind. How much you had slept since coming to this island would likely concern any doctor, but such was the fate of being Darkrai's lover, you supposed. At least the dreams you had were often pleasant and comforting. Any nightmares ended quickly, and you found yourself being comforted by Cyrus when they happened.
“Do you truly need them?” his voice sounder like it was coming from everywhere as he grasped your hand and brought it to his lips, “Just stay here… I don't want to give you back to them right now…” You wanted to argue back, but the familiarity of his words sent shivers down your spine. The room around you seemed to suddenly fade to a complete void as you felt alone and terrified. Confusion rushed through your mind. Had you not been awake? Where was this?
You did not dare move.
Arms softly came around you from the darkness behind to gently embrace you.
“Beloved…” you could feel the heat of his breath on your ear, “Awaken.”
You shot awake in your bed, taken aback from the sheer lack of light in the room.
“Cyrus…” you whined, turning to see the man in bed beside you, “… Can't you just cuddle me here instead of messing with my dreams? You made me think I was out of toilet paper.”
He stared at you before clicking his tongue. “… I find it easier to express myself there… I apologise,” the blue-haired man sounded genuine. A hand came to grasp yours. He was being affectionate, something unfortunately uncommon. “Your mind is a comforting place for me to be…” he mumbled while leaning you back down against the sheets, “It's easy for me to lose myself there… Perhaps you hold a perfect world inside your mind…”
You suddenly grabbed his hand tighter than he held your own. It truly had become harder to distinguish reality from dreams. Only one thing was glaringly obvious, and it was Cyrus. No matter the place you were, he was always present in some form. Quite different from his initial reaction to you moving onto his island and deciding to keep him company. “That's almost sweet of you to say, Cy,” you told him sweetly, “… But I do need to be awake for things, too. How am I supposed to eat like that?”
“Do not be foolish,” his voice was strong as he spoke, “I allow you more than enough conscious periods to tend to your human needs. I don't want you to perish.” You sighed. The offence was clear on his face at the thought that he would allow harm to befall you from his actions. Pressing a kiss to his cheek, you then pulled away to stretch and get up from bed.
“Well, I'm going to the mainland for a while, for real this time,” you told him, “… I'll be back, you know. I live here and love to see my cute Cy working away on his projects in his little area.” The Darkrai almost looked more upset by those words than he did by your previous ones.
“I am not cute.”
“Oh, but you haven't seen your focused face. When you figure something out, you smile a little.”
The dark-type felt mortified endlessly by how you viewed him. It definitely bought you time to get away, though.

“it’s an existential thing”
a story where the return of north island's resident player leaves a girl with a lot of influence in a predicament.
trigger warning for harassment and a little bit of violence in this chapter.
chapter 1 - series masterlist - full masterlist
----
when i was younger we would go to church every sunday. it wasn’t because we were religious or anything but carole thought it was good idea to force me and bradley to make friends. afterwards we would have brunch with the kazanskys and, depending on our behavior that day, bradley and i would get to pick out something sweet from the store before returning home. after she died i stopped going, but my sunday routine would stay relatively the same. instead of going to the store for a candy bar, i would go to the bakery for something sweet. church started at 10, but sarah liked being early so she arrived at 9:30, and ended at 11 so i had an hour and a half to drop off the contraband treats at iceman's house.
tom was like my dad when i was growing up. i didn’t have maverick and bradley didn’t have goose so he was there to teach us everything we needed to know. when i was 13 he taught me how to play football, and when i was 16 he let me play with the navy boys. when i was 15 and carole was too scared to get in the car with a “reckless teenager”, he taught me and bradley how to drive. everyone knew he didn’t have much time left, but a lot of us were in denial. i saw how much pain carole was in during her last weeks, and i wouldn’t wish that on anyone else, so i was trying my best to make iceman’s final moments semi-enjoyable.
when i arrived he was in his office. he was too weak and in too much pain to deal with anyone so he handed me an envelope and motioned towards his computer. “deliver this before please, it’s important” on the monitor. the words “captain pete “maverick” mitchell” were written on the front, each letter with a slight shake.
----
business around the base always slowed down around sundown. day shift contractors switching with their night shift counterparts, everyone else getting ready to go home, the heat radiating off of the planes distorting the sunset. i figured the top gun pilots would be debriefing so i headed towards cyclone’s office.
“mitchell.” he said as i entered the room. he sounded annoyed, and he had the pissed off old man eyebrow thing going on.
“cyclone.” i replied, trying not to smile. i respected authority but it was always funny to see him get all worked up. i was definitely mavericks daughter, no doubt about it. sassiness was in my dna. “i just wanted to pop in before i delivered this to maverick” i said while pulling the letter out of my bag.
“how’s iceman?” he asked.
“could be better, he’s trying his best.” cyclone nodded, silently acknowledging me. both of us knew he didn’t have much time left, and both of us knew without iceman there was no one to keep my father in the navy. “this is urgent so i’ve got to go, but it was good seeing you.” i said as i quickly left the room. i respected cyclone, but i couldn’t agree with his distaste for maverick. being around him too long always lead to us getting into an argument about one of pete’s rash decisions.
i was used to the stares from top gun pilots whenever i visited the base. tom frequently had me deliver documents and other things from his house and the attention was fun. i never got involved with the navymen, though it was fun to see how far they would go to get me to notice them, but this time was different. the blonde “cowboy” from the night before had been in my brain for the last 24 hours. something about him drew me towards him. like how the moon was drawn towards earth.
when i arrived at the hanger they were meeting in the debriefing was nearly over. stepping into the “room” (if you could even call an open hanger a room) i could feel the tension between my father and bradley. i could also feel a pair of blue eyes drilling holes into the back of my head as i walked towards the makeshift platform maverick was on. “that’s all for now, you are dismissed.” he said, mouth slowly shifting into a smile as he saw me.
“dad!” i squealed, running to hug him.
“mallory!” he replied, lifting me up and spinning around. “you’re so big now.”
“god i’m not a teenager anymore.” i joked. “i haven't grown since i was like 16.”
“i’ll never get used to you being old.”
“you’re the old one, grandpa.” i said as my father dramatically clutched his chest.
“am i really that old” he cried out, pretending to break down in tears. time could change a lot, but it would never stop pete from his theatrics. we quickly caught up and i handed him ice’s letter. our conversation was cut short by him remembering the overdraft from the other night, and he quickly left to pay his long overdue tab. as i stood there i flirted with the idea of visiting the blonde pilot and the rest of the aviators in the ready room.
is it worth it? i thought. i knew how navymen could be, especially pilots. i couldn’t put myself through months of no contact, which was only one of the worries that came with being with an active duty pilot. i must’ve taken too long thinking because by the time i got to the game room everyone was gone. boys are a headache.
the secret teenage girl in me must have taken over because i somehow ended up at the hard deck, for something other than work this time. i walked into the bar, the cloud of sweat and desperation immediately hitting me, and began walking towards the pool table. that corner of the bar was usually frequented by regulars instead of the top gun pilots that were currently inhabiting the area. Natasha was the first person to notice me.
i met her years ago when Bradley was at top gun. i was finished with college so i was back at home taking care of carole. she wanted me to leave southern california, earn a bunch of money and be successful, but nothing could keep me from north island. it was my home, and nothing could change that. maybe i was so attached to the island because it was the one place i knew my father would always be able to return, we’ll never know. it didn’t matter if i didn’t know where he was, he knew i was here.
Phoenix shouted my name as she ran to hug me. “oh my god it’s so good to see you!” i exclaimed. “it’s been forever.”
“last time i was here you were blonde.” she remarked, “and you had a boyfriend.”
“well i grew out the blonde, and we broke up a couple years back.” i replied.
“called it!” she shouted, reaching her hand behind her head to grab money from bradley. “no one in a relationship would be in a bar, alone, with a bunch of pilots on a sunday of all days.”
“you guys bet on me!?”
“hell yeah we did. i knew that guy was bad news the moment i met him, i caught a vibe.”
“remind me to have you meet all of my future boyfriends, i need to see if your bad news detector is accurate.”
“oh it’s accurate all right, the girl bagman used to be with ended up being totally insane. i knew it from the beginning.”
“bagman? what’s the story behind that one.” i questioned. my mention of him must have caught his attention because there was suddenly a very tall (very captivating) pilot eyeing us from across the pool table.
“it’s hangman actually, and you can find out the story if you give me a chance. what d’ya say? save a horse ride a cowboy?” his southern accent coming out, especially during that last sentence. normally lines like that would leave me repulsed, but there was something about the pilot that made his stupid pickup lines work. his shit eating grin was quickly wiped off his face by Bradley “accidentally” hitting him in the hip with the cue in his hands.
“next time you try to get with mal you should remember who she’s related too, bagman.” bradley spat out. he was obviously annoyed. my father was probably the source of that annoyance but i wasn’t here to play therapist. i wasn’t really sure why i was here, but listening to bradley complain about my dad wasn’t the reason.
“oh i can handle maverick, what’s he gonna do? make me do extra push up’s because i’m an incredible pilot?” hangman shot back, cockiness oozing out of him as if he was a slug.
“my father is the least of your problems. unless you’re totally confident that you can face uncle tom.” i joked. it didn’t matter how cocky he was, none of my boyfriends made it past iceman. hearing i was related to tom kazansky was like a punch in the gut for any aviator that tried to get my number, but hangman was doing surprisingly well at keeping his defeat hidden. “i’m heading to the bar does anyone want anything?”, the pilots all responded with various head shakes and no’s. i pulled up to the bar and ordered a vodka cran, feeling a pressure against my lower back.
“hey baby, i saw you walk in earlier. can i buy you a drink?” the mysterious man asked.
“no thanks, i’m not interested.” i replied, pushing his hand off of my back.
“what’s wrong? don’t you like me? i saw the way you were looking at me when you came in.” he said while grabbing my wrist.
“whatever you thought you saw was bullshit, now leave me alone.” i tried to release myself from his grip, to which he retaliated by squeezing even harder. “i’m asking you nicely, please let go of me.”
“why would i let go? i bet you like this huh.”
“totally love it. do you do this to every girl you try to take home? harass them until they give in and go home with you?”
“god why do you have to be such a bitch.” he complained. letting go of my wrist to take a sip of his beer.
“i prefer the term army brat, dick.” i spat at him, stomping on his foot with my heel. my sudden attack startled him giving me a chance to get up from the bar and head towards the exit. oh my god how fucking hard is it to be decent, i thought. as soon as i was outside i ran for my car, fumbling with my bag to try and find my keys. why is there so much shit in here? everytime i thought i found it i just pulled out a lip gloss or a hair tie. anything but my keys. i was freaking out, plain and simple.
“you know if you were a little nicer maybe you’d have a boyfriend!” the creep shouted, hobbling out of the bar. “maybe that’s why you’re a bitter cunt! cause you can’t get fucking laid!”
“fuck.” i whispered. he was getting very close, very fast. “you really don’t wanna do this” i tried to sound assertive but i was fucking terrified.
“what’re you gonna do? slap me?”
“next time, maybe don’t use your shitty moves on a girl from north island.” i said, kneeing the creep in the balls. “that’s for ruining my night.” he bent over, grabbing his crotch. looking up for a split second before i punched him in the face. “and that’s for putting your hands on me.” i reached into my pocket, finally finding my keys.
“that was badass.” hangman shouted from the side of the parking lot, walking towards me. “you gotta teach me some of your moves sometime.”
“how much of that did you see?” i shouted back.
“enough.”
“i’m not doing this tonight bagman, i’m tired and i’ve sworn off navymen.”
“it’s jake.” he was 2 feet away at this point, and still getting closer. “jake seresin.”
“well,” i paused, “jake.” he was very very close now. “you can get my number when you prove you deserve it.” closing the gap between us and pulling him into a kiss.
“i can do that, yeah” he whispered as i pulled away. i could feel his stare lingering as i got into my car.
“goodnight jake. i’m looking forward to seeing you soon.”

On the Run chapter 40
Summary: A lesson
AO3 Portal
Waylon wakes up and goes downstairs, finding Eddie and Jess already up and making breakfast side by side, as usual. Trevor is sitting at the island and Waylon joins him.
"They don't let you help either, huh," Trevor asks.
Waylon laughs. "They say I just get in the way."
Breakfast is done soon and then they eat. Waylon washes dishes with Trevor, the man drying the plates Waylon hands him.
When they're finished, Trevor sits on the couch and scrolls through his phone. Waylon joins him and picks up a book. Jess' laptop makes her push notification sound and he looks up to watch her react. Her face turns from interested to grim.
Eddie and Waylon look at each other, uneasy. "What do you have," Eddie asks, making his spot and putting his book aside.
"VIRALeaks got back to me about the team in town," Jess says.
"Do you want me to go upstairs," Trevor asks. "So y'all can talk freely?"
"No. You need the information too."
Trevor nods. "Barnabas Barnes, Hendrix Thorpe, Jay Clifton, Dorean Wescott, Eve Warwick, Chet Breckenridge, Adrian Levett, Chantal Victors, Russ Summers, Anabelle Blackburn, and Hector Georgeson," Jess lists off names.
"Eleven people," Waylon demands, flabbergasted. Jess nods. He looks at Eddie, who looks pained. "That's way too many."
"Nothing we can do about the number," Jess points out. "Let's see. Most of them are trained military, the rest are military contractors."
"This is awful," Waylon says. Eddie puts his hand on his shoulder and squeezes gently.
"You three'll get through this," Trevor nods. "I believe in you. Plus, we'll help."
"Thanks, Trevor," Jess smiles a little. "But we need a plan."
"Jess, they're former military," Waylon exclaims, throwing his arms up and dislodging Eddie's hand. "And probably just as ruthless as Murkoff usually is, if not more so. What could we possibly do?"
"Kill them," Eddie offers. The other three just look at him. "Joking. Mostly."
"Look, we can just avoid them," Jess says. "Trevor's here now, that keeps the house safe with the buddy system. What I did with Jerome should keep them off our backs surveillance-wise. He'll recruit some people to scan the town, make sure we find out where the bugs and cameras are."
"You think they put bugs and cameras up," Waylon asks. "Bugs are recording devices," he explains to Eddie, who nods his thanks.
"I would if I were them. But when they find them, I'll tell them not to take them down."
"Why not," Eddie asks before Waylon can.
"We can feed them misinformation. Plus, I don't want them to know that we know what's going on. Playing dumb is our best bet."
Waylon exhales slowly. He knows Jess is probably right. Murkoff is tech-savvy, even more so than he originally thought. They had caught him when he sent them email for starters. But Jess knows how to hack and avoid detection.
"How do you know all this," Eddie asks.
"Lots and lots of movies," Jess replies. "Plus when I was a kid I read a lot of spy books. Never thought the information would actually come in handy," she smiles ruefully. "That's all I can think of for right now. We can always change our plan as time goes on. As for right now," she says, and looks at Eddie. "We should teach Way how to fight."
Eddie nods and walks to the backyard. Waylon follows him, leaving Jess and Trevor inside.
"This is useless," Waylon says. "Didn't you hear Jess? They're military," he stresses again.
Eddie looks at him. "The cops who came to arrest me were trained, too," he points out.
"Eddie, they caught you."
"Yes, but I held them off for a bit."
"How long is 'a bit,'" Waylon asks, eyebrow raised. Eddie's face heats up. "That's what I thought."
"This is still important," Eddie says. "If you can manage to hold them off, even for minutes, then we have extra time to come get you."
"I'm never going to be alone! I'll always be with you or Jess," Waylon throws his hands up.
But you'll leave eventually. "Knowing how to fight is a life skill," Eddie says instead of voicing his thoughts. "Even if you never use it, it's good to have in the back of your brain."
"Fine," Waylon gives in. "What are you going to teach me?"
"Nothing formal," Eddie says. "No martial arts, I don't know them. I think Trevor called it 'bar brawling.' I always called it 'street fighting.'"
"Meaning," Waylon prods.
Eddie smiles. "I'm going to teach you how to make someone regret ever having touched you."
"That sounds...ominous."
Eddie chuckles. He looks up when he hears the glass door slide open. Jess comes out, sitting on the step. Trevor is watching TV. "After you go, I'm teaching him what I know," she tells him.
"Good idea."
"Oh God, what did I get myself into," Waylon groans.
"Ok," Eddie says, walking more into their backyard. He looks behind him to where the coop is, and the chickens are pecking at the door to their run. He doesn't want them in the way, so they'll have to put up with it for a bit. Waylon follows him and Eddie turns to face him. "The first thing you have to think before you start doing anything is 'this doesn't have to be a fair fight.'"
"What does that mean," Waylon asks.
"It means do whatever you can to get away," Jess says. "Claw at their eyes, bite their ears, kick them between their legs." Eddie nods.
"Jess will teach you more about that, I think she's more suited for teaching someone your size. All I'll teach you is how to throw a punch."
"I've never thrown a punch before," Waylon admits.
"No, really," Eddie asks. Waylon laughs.
"Ok, ok. I get it."
Eddie chuckles. "When you do throw a punch, you have to keep your wrist straight and make contact with your center knuckle." He makes a fist and points at it. "See how it sticks out the most?" Waylon makes a fist of his own and examines it before he nods. "You don't have to be my size to make it really hurt," Eddie assures him. "You're gonna have to put your whole body into it."
"How do you know so much about teaching someone to fight," Waylon asks.
"No so much teaching but I do remember learning to fight. I didn't have someone to teach me, just trial and error. I broke a few of my own bones before I figured it out."
"You can break your own bones?" Waylon sounds horrified.
"Wrist, fingers, forearm," Jess says. She shrugs when Waylon turns his astonished gaze on her. "Hey, punching takes a shit-ton of force. I went to a self-defense class when I was in high school as a requirement to fill out my gym training. They never taught us how to punch, so when I tried I broke a few fingers."
"Jesus," Waylon mutters.
"But you won't have to worry about that," Eddie says, drawing his attention again. "Because we're going to teach you. Can I see your arm," he asks, extending his hand. Waylon puts the back of his hand in Eddie's waiting one. Eddie lifts them like they're going to arm-wrestle. "Make a fist." Waylon does so. Eddie feels along his forearm. "Hmm. A little weak," Eddie mutters to himself. "So your punches might not be as effective. But you can still target areas that will hurt your opponent."
Waylon nods and Eddie lets go of his arm.
"Next thing you need to learn is to keep your wrists aligned with your forearm when you punch," Eddie continues. "That goes for straight and swinging punches." He turns his side to Waylon and throws a slow-motion punch both ways. "Jabs are great from a distance, swinging body blows are more for close contact."
"Got it."
"You also have to know where to punch someone," Eddie says. "Do not, under any circumstances, try to punch their skull. That's a surefire way to break your wrist and take yourself out of the fight. There are a few places on the face to punch, but not the forehead so don't miss. The nose is a great target. You can also try a swinging punch to their jaw. Right here, too," Eddie points ar a point directly below his breastbone.
"Solar plexus," Jess says from behind Waylon.
"The throat, too. It'll knock the wind out of them. And- I'm sure this will make you wince in sympathy but you have to avoid that during a fight- their groin."
"What if it's a woman," Waylon challenges.
"Still a good place to punch and kick," Jess says, standing up and joining them at last. "It hurts like a motherfucker, I can tell you from experience."
"Now you need to know how to stand," Eddie says.
"Stand," Waylon asks. "Really?"
"To protect yourself from getting hit in the same places you're aiming for," Eddie explains. "You're gonna have to angle your head and chin down a little." He demonstrates and Waylon mimics him.
“A little too much,” Eddie says, reaching out and lifting his chin slightly. He drops Waylon’s face after a second, clearing his throat. “Also, breathe out when you punch,” Eddie says after a moment. He gets into a punching position and looks at Waylon. “Try it.”
Waylon tries, but Eddie has to adjust him a little.
 “There, that’s better.”
Waylon relaxes into his normal standing position.
“Ok, now show me,” Eddie says, extending his hand.
 “Won’t I hurt you?”
 “I’ve taken worse beatings.”
Waylon shrugs, focuses on his palm, get into position, and throws a punch. He misses by a mile, only succeeding in spinning himself out from the force he put in.
“Ok,” Eddie says, catching him. “Good start.”
“‘Good start’?! I didn’t even hit you,” Waylon exclaims, face red.
“But you put your body behind the attempt,” Eddie says, righting him. “Try again.”
This time, Waylon aims a little to the right of Eddie’s hand, and his fist makes contact. He shrinks back at the last second, not wanting to hurt his friend.
“No, see, you’re pulling back when you make contact,” Eddie says.
“I don’t want to hurt you.”
 “You won’t,” Eddie assures him.
“Edster, why don’t we just see if there’s a gym in town, or if we can borrow someone’s personal one?”
 “Good idea,” Waylon answers instead.
They go inside. “Trevor,” Jess calls, and he looks over. “Is there a gym in town?”
 “No,” he admits.
“Does anyone have a personal one?”
Trevor thinks. “Maybe Jason,” he muses. “I’ll see.” Trevor takes out his phone and sends a text. When he gets the answer, he looks up. “I was right. He’s coming to get y’all now.”
When Jason arrives, Eddie and Waylon get into his car.
“So, why do y’all need my gym,” Jason asks.
“Teaching Sam how to fight,” Eddie explains, switching easily to his fake name.
“Sounds like a good idea.” The drive is short, thankfully, and Jason leads them to his basement. There’s a heavy bag and some weights.
 “Thanks, Jason,” Eddie nods.
“No problem. Yell if you need me,” Jason smiles, walking back upstairs.
Waylon looks at the hanging bag with trepidation. He walks forward and gently pushes it, and it barely moves. “What am I supposed to do with this,” he bemoans.
“You don’t have to- and shouldn’t- punch with everything you have at first,” Eddie says. “Start slow and gentle. Your arms are a little weak, so this should strengthen them, too.”
“How slow and gentle,” Waylon asks, soothed.
Eddie demonstrates- his punch moves the bag only slightly more than Waylon’s push had. Waylon nods and gets into the stance Eddie had shown him. “Remember to breathe out,” Eddie says and stands back.
Jess gets the computer and takes up residence on an armchair, queuing up videos and articles teaching Waylon how to fight.
Waylon and Eddie catch a ride back home and it’s nearly dark. Eddie and Jess make dinner for the four of them and then unwind for a bit. Jess keeps seeing Waylon shake his hand out and flex it and smiles privately. That’s a good sign- it means that Eddie really worked with him. They go to bed.

Commercial Flat Roofing
Tumblr media
Exploring the Benefits and Considerations of Commercial Flat Roofing In the realm of commercial buildings, the choice of roofing plays a pivotal role in ensuring longevity, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness. Among the various options available, commercial flat roofing stands out as a popular choice for many property owners. Its practicality, versatility, and durability make it a compelling option for a wide range of applications. In this comprehensive guide, we delve into the intricacies of commercial flat roofing, exploring its benefits, considerations, and why CDR Construction & Roofing is your ideal partner in ensuring quality installation and maintenance. Understanding Commercial Flat Roofing Commercial flat roofing, as the name suggests, features a horizontal or nearly horizontal surface. Unlike pitched roofs, which have a noticeable slope, flat roofs have a minimal incline, often imperceptible to the naked eye. This design characteristic offers several advantages, making it a preferred choice for commercial buildings:
Cost-Effectiveness: Flat roofs typically require fewer materials and less labor compared to pitched roofs, resulting in lower installation costs. Moreover, their simple design facilitates easier maintenance and repair, reducing long-term expenses.
Space Utilization: The flat surface of these roofs provides additional usable space, allowing for the installation of HVAC units, solar panels, or even rooftop gardens. This utilization of space is particularly advantageous for businesses seeking to maximize their property's functionality.
Accessibility: Maintenance and inspections are more accessible on flat roofs, as technicians can walk across the surface without facing the safety challenges posed by steep slopes. This accessibility facilitates regular upkeep, prolonging the roof's lifespan and minimizing the risk of damage.
Energy Efficiency: Flat roofs offer opportunities for incorporating energy-efficient features such as cool roofs or reflective coatings. These measures help regulate indoor temperatures, reduce the heat island effect, and lower energy consumption, resulting in cost savings and environmental benefits. Considerations for Commercial Flat Roofing While the benefits of flat roofing are compelling, it's essential to consider several factors before making a decision:
Drainage: Proper drainage is critical for flat roofs to prevent water ponding, which can lead to leaks and structural damage. Design considerations such as internal drains, scuppers, and tapered insulation are necessary to ensure efficient water runoff.
Materials: Various materials are suitable for flat roofing, including built-up roofing (BUR), modified bitumen, single-ply membranes (such as TPO and EPDM), and spray foam roofing. Each material has its unique characteristics in terms of durability, cost, and maintenance requirements, so careful evaluation is necessary to choose the most suitable option for your building.
Maintenance: While flat roofs are relatively low-maintenance compared to pitched roofs, regular inspections and proactive maintenance are essential to identify and address issues promptly. Partnering with a reputable roofing contractor like CDR Construction & Roofing ensures that maintenance tasks are performed effectively, extending the lifespan of your roof.
Weather Resistance: Flat roofs are susceptible to certain weather conditions, such as heavy rain, snow accumulation, and UV exposure. Proper insulation, robust membrane systems, and routine inspections help mitigate these risks and enhance the roof's weather resistance. Why Choose CDR Construction & Roofing When it comes to installing, repairing, or maintaining commercial flat roofs, partnering with a trusted and experienced contractor is paramount. CDR Construction & Roofing offers unparalleled expertise, reliability, and customer service, making us the ideal choice for all your roofing needs. Here's why you should choose us:

Improving Property Security: TPO Material Administrations in Ottawa
Elevating Durability and Efficiency for Ottawa's Buildings
When it comes to safeguarding your property against the unpredictable elements of nature, having a robust roofing system is paramount. In Ottawa, where extreme weather conditions can pose a threat to buildings year-round, opting for a reliable roofing solution becomes imperative. Among the various roofing options available, Thermoplastic Olefin (TPO) roofing stands out as a popular choice for its durability, energy efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. In this article, we delve into the significance of TPO roofing services in Ottawa and why they are a wise investment for property owners in the region.
Tumblr media
Understanding TPO Roofing
TPO roofing is a single-ply roofing membrane constructed from a blend of rubber and thermoplastics. This combination results in a roofing material that offers exceptional strength, flexibility, and resistance to UV radiation, punctures, tears, and chemical exposure. TPO roofing is also known for its reflective properties, which contribute to energy efficiency by reducing cooling costs during hot summers.
Why Choose TPO Roofing in Ottawa?
1. Weather Resistance
Ottawa experiences a range of weather conditions throughout the year, from harsh winters with heavy snowfall to hot summers with intense sunlight. TPO roofing's ability to withstand extreme temperatures, as well as its resistance to moisture and wind uplift, makes it an ideal choice for Ottawa's climate.
2. Energy Efficiency
TPO roofing is available in various light colors that reflect sunlight, rather than absorbing it like traditional dark-colored roofs. This reflective property helps in reducing the heat island effect in urban areas and lowers cooling costs by maintaining lower indoor temperatures during summer months.
3. Durability and Low Maintenance
TPO roofing membranes are highly durable and have a long service life, often lasting 20-30 years or more with proper installation and maintenance. Additionally, TPO roofs require minimal maintenance, saving property owners both time and money over the life of the roof.
4. Cost-Effectiveness
Compared to other roofing materials such as EPDM or PVC, TPO roofing is relatively more affordable, making it a cost-effective option for both residential and commercial properties in Ottawa. Its long-term durability and energy-saving benefits further enhance its cost-effectiveness.
Professional TPO Roofing Services in Ottawa
For property owners considering TPO roofing installation or repair in Ottawa, entrusting the job to professional roofing contractors is crucial. Experienced roofing companies in Ottawa offer comprehensive TPO roofing services, including installation, maintenance, and repair, using high-quality materials and industry-standard techniques to ensure optimal performance and longevity of the roofing system.
Conclusion
In a city like Ottawa, where weather conditions can be harsh and unpredictable, investing in a reliable roofing solution is essential to protect your property and ensure its longevity. TPO roofing emerges as a top choice for its exceptional durability, energy efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. By opting for professional TPO roofing services in Ottawa, property owners can enhance the resilience and efficiency of their buildings, safeguarding them against the elements for years to come.

Energy-Efficient Roofing Options
Tumblr media
In an era where energy conservation and environmental sustainability are increasingly important, homeowners are seeking ways to reduce their energy consumption and lower their carbon footprint. One often overlooked aspect is the roof, which can significantly impact a home's energy efficiency. In this article, we will explore some energy-efficient roofing options that can help you create a more sustainable and cost-effective home.
Cool Roofs
Cool roofs are designed to reflect more sunlight and absorb less heat compared to traditional roofs. They are typically made of materials with high solar reflectance and thermal emittance properties. Cool roofs can reduce the amount of heat transferred into your home, keeping it cooler during hot summer months. This, in turn, lowers your cooling costs and reduces the strain on your air conditioning system. Common cool roofing materials include cool asphalt shingles, metal roofs, and specially coated tiles.
Metal Roofing
Metal roofing is an excellent choice for energy efficiency. It reflects solar heat instead of absorbing it, keeping your home cooler. Metal roofs are durable, long-lasting, and recyclable, making them an environmentally friendly option. Additionally, they are often made from recycled materials and can be installed over existing roofs, reducing waste generated during the installation process.
Green Roofs
Green roofs, also known as living roofs, are gaining popularity as an eco-friendly option. They consist of a layer of vegetation and soil planted on top of a waterproof membrane. Green roofs provide insulation, reduce stormwater runoff, and help mitigate the urban heat island effect. They can effectively reduce energy consumption by providing natural insulation, keeping your home cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Green roofs also improve air quality and provide habitat for birds and insects.
Solar Roofing
Solar roofing systems harness the power of the sun to generate electricity for your home. Photovoltaic (PV) panels are integrated into the roof, converting sunlight into usable energy. Solar roofing not only reduces your reliance on traditional energy sources but also allows you to generate your own clean, renewable energy. Depending on your location and energy needs, solar roofing systems can significantly reduce your electricity bills and even provide you with a surplus of energy that can be sold back to the grid.
Insulated Roofing
Proper insulation is crucial for energy efficiency. Insulated roofing systems, such as spray foam or rigid foam insulation, can prevent heat transfer and reduce energy consumption for both heating and cooling. Insulation helps maintain a consistent indoor temperature, minimizing the need for excessive heating or cooling. This results in lower energy bills and a reduced environmental impact.
Energy-Efficient Roof Coatings
Roof coatings can improve the energy efficiency of your existing roof. Reflective coatings, such as elastomeric coatings, can be applied to roofs to increase solar reflectance and thermal emittance. These coatings help reduce heat absorption and keep the interior of your home cooler. They can be applied to various roofing materials, including asphalt shingles, metal roofs, and concrete tiles.
Conclusion
Investing in an energy-efficient roofing company in Irondequoit options not only benefits the environment but also saves you money in the long run. By choosing materials and technologies that enhance energy efficiency, you can significantly reduce your home's energy consumption and decrease your carbon footprint. Whether it's through cool roofs, metal roofing, green roofs, solar roofing, insulated roofing, or energy-efficient roof coatings, there are numerous options available to suit your needs and preferences. Consult with a professional roofing contractor to explore the best energy-efficient roofing solution for your home, and enjoy the long-term benefits of sustainability and energy savings.

Terrace Tiles in chennai
Terrace tiles play a crucial role in the construction of buildings, especially in urban areas like Chennai, where extreme temperatures can take a toll on the comfort and energy efficiency of homes and buildings. Among various types of terrace tiles available, Insulla Cool Roof Tiles stand out for their innovative design and exceptional benefits. In this article, we'll explore why Insulla Cool Roof Tiles are gaining popularity and why they are a smart choice for homeowners and builders in Chennai.
Importance of Terrace Tiles
Terrace tiles serve as protective layers for rooftops, shielding buildings from harsh weather conditions such as rain, heat, and UV radiation. In cities like Chennai, where summers are scorching hot, traditional roofing materials can absorb a significant amount of heat, leading to discomfort indoors and increased energy consumption for cooling purposes. Terrace tiles, particularly Insulla Cool Roof Tiles, address these issues effectively.
Benefits of Insulla Cool Roof Tiles
Reflective Properties
Insulla Cool Roof Tiles are designed with reflective properties that help to bounce off a large portion of the solar radiation they receive. This reduces the amount of heat absorbed by the building, keeping the indoor temperature cooler and more comfortable, even during peak summer months.
Energy Efficiency
By reducing the heat absorbed by the building, Insulla Cool Roof Tiles contribute to lower energy consumption for air conditioning. This results in significant cost savings on electricity bills while also reducing the carbon footprint of the building.
Durability
Insulla Cool Roof Tiles are made from high-quality materials that are resistant to weathering, UV radiation, and corrosion. This ensures long-term durability and minimal maintenance requirements, making them a cost-effective roofing solution in the long run.
How Insulla Cool Roof Tiles Work
Insulla Cool Roof Tiles incorporate advanced technology that enables them to reflect a large portion of solar heat away from the building. This is achieved through the use of reflective pigments and coatings that enhance the tiles' ability to reflect sunlight.
Installation Process of Insulla Cool Roof Tiles
The installation process of Insulla Cool Roof Tiles is straightforward and can be carried out by experienced roofing contractors. It involves preparing the rooftop surface, applying an adhesive layer, and then laying the tiles in a systematic manner to ensure proper coverage and alignment.
Maintenance Tips for Terrace Tiles
Maintaining Insulla Cool Roof Tiles is relatively simple and requires periodic cleaning to remove dirt, debris, and any organic matter that may accumulate on the surface. Regular inspections should also be conducted to check for any signs of damage or wear and tear.
Cost Comparison with Traditional Roofing Materials
While the initial cost of Insulla Cool Roof Tiles may be slightly higher than traditional roofing materials, the long-term savings in energy costs and maintenance expenses make them a more economical choice over time. Additionally, government incentives and rebates may be available for installing energy-efficient roofing materials.
Environmental Impact of Insulla Cool Roof Tiles
Insulla Cool Roof Tiles are environmentally friendly as they help to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions associated with air conditioning. By keeping buildings cooler naturally, they also contribute to mitigating the urban heat island effect, thereby improving overall air quality and comfort in urban areas like Chennai.
Customer Testimonials
Many homeowners and builders in Chennai have praised the performance and benefits of Insulla Cool Roof Tiles. They have reported significant reductions in indoor temperatures, lower energy bills, and enhanced comfort levels since installing these innovative terrace tiles.
Conclusion
Insulla Cool Roof Tiles offer a sustainable and cost-effective solution for protecting buildings from heat and UV radiation in hot and humid climates like Chennai. With their reflective properties, energy efficiency, and durability, they provide long-term benefits for homeowners, builders, and the environment alike.

From Fireplace to Backyard: Enhancing Your Home with Decorative Stonework
Tumblr media
In the world of architecture and home design, few materials are as timeless and versatile as stone. Long-lasting and aesthetically bold, decorative stonework can transform an ordinary space into a showcase of elegance and rugged beauty. In the Phoenix area, where the desert landscape offers a unique palette of earthy tones, integrating masonry into your home's design not only adds value but also serves as a nod to the region's history and natural bounty.
The Desert Aesthetic: How Stonework Complements Phoenix Homes
The desert environment presents a unique challenge and opportunity in home design. The blistering heat and sparse foliage mean that structures must be built to withstand extreme conditions. Stonework not only provides that durability but also complements the natural backdrop, allowing a home to blend seamlessly with the desert surroundings.
In Phoenix, a city where Southwestern and modern architectural styles often converge, stonework brings a warmth and groundedness to a design. From adobe-style homes to sleek, contemporary villas, incorporating local sandstone, flagstone, and even volcanic rock, can create a visual association with the land that's both comforting and awe-inspiring.
Bringing the Outdoors In: Stone Fireplaces as Focal Points
The fireplace has long served as the heart of the home, a gathering place for families and a source of both literal and metaphorical warmth. A stone fireplace, particularly one crafted to reflect the geology of the region, becomes a focal point that draws the eye and grounds the entire living space.
Imagine a floor-to-ceiling hearth made of Sedona Red sandstone, with its rich burgundy hues, or a more contemporary design featuring angular blocks of black basalt. These fireplaces provide a link to the natural world just beyond your door, inviting tranquility and reflection into your everyday life.
Crafting a Sanctuary: The Modern Stone-Clad Bathroom
The modern bathroom has evolved from a utilitarian space to a luxurious sanctuary — and stone has played a significant role in this metamorphosis. Stonework in a bathroom embodies luxury and durability, turning an everyday activity like bathing into a spa-like experience.
For a contemporary touch in your Phoenix home, consider white marble tiling or quartzite vanity countertops — materials that not only look exquisite but are also resistant to the dry, hot climate. With the right masonry contractors in Phoenix, you can create a custom-designed retreat that celebrates the desert's subtle beauty while providing a cool, soothing escape.
The Pleasures of Al Fresco Living: Backyard Stonework and Outdoor Kitchens
Phoenix's famously clear skies and mild winters make outdoor living a year-round delight. Stonework enhances this outdoor experience, offering an opportunity to create a functional yet elegant space for entertaining, cooking, and relaxing.
An outdoor kitchen with a granite countertop and a stacked stone island can become the centerpiece of your backyard, while a trail of flagstone pavers leading to a secluded patio or a tiered fountain evokes a sense of exploration and tranquility. Each installation of stonework in your outdoor area not only accentuates the beauty of your home but also ensures longevity against the harsh desert conditions.
Choosing a Masonry Contractor: Craftsmanship and Local Expertise
While the beauty of stonework is timeless, the art of masonry is as much about the craft as it is about the material itself. It is essential to select a contractor who understands the local environment, building codes, and architectural styles prevalent in the Phoenix area.
When hiring a masonry contractors in Phoenix, look for a portfolio that reflects a range of styles and a deep appreciation for the natural materials at play. Ask for references, inquire about the contractor's process and experience, and discuss your project in detail to ensure that your vision can be realized with the skill and precision that stonework demands.
The Value of Stonework: A Lasting Home Investment
Stonework is an investment that pays dividends both in the immediate value it adds to your home and in the lasting beauty it provides for years to come. In an age where many homes are constructed quickly and with an eye on cost, the permanence and undeniable allure of stone set your home apart.
Whether you are considering a full exterior renovation or a simple interior refresh, incorporating decorative stonework can redefine your dwelling as a work of art. Phoenix residents are spoiled for choice when it comes to masonry materials and design, and the only limitation is your imagination — and perhaps the skill of the mason you choose.
In the end, the process of enhancing your home with stonework is a journey into the very foundations of architectural expression. Each piece of stone, cut and placed with care, is a testament to the enduring partnership between human creativity and the raw materials of the earth. In Phoenix, this partnership yields not just shelter but a deeper connection to the landscape and to the timeless traditions of desert building.
