Howl Jenkins Pendragon (ハウル・ジェンキンス・ペンドラゴン, Hauru Jenkinsu Pendoragon) is a powerful wizard living in the land of Ingary. Howl Jenkins was born to an ordinary family in modern-day Wales. However, he himself was anything but ordinary. Gifted with a natural talent for magic, he began studying it. Even in college, he wrote his thesis on magical spells and charms, and joined a group of other gifted magicians on Earth.

It is during one of his outings to find a young woman that he first meets Sophie. Howl first meets Sophie on May Day in Market Chipping before the Witch of The Waste casts an aging spell on her. Days later he returns to the Castle and is surprised to find an old woman cooking bacon on Calcifer.

Howl is known by the residents of the small town Market Chipping to be very wicked, stealing and eating girls’ hearts. But he is commissioned by all sorts of people to do less frightening magic, like ensuring good wind for a fishing boat.

Howl is incredibly vain, and spends plenty of time in the morning putting on vanity spells and fixing his glamorous outfits. His cleaning lady, Sophie, once interfered with his beauty potions, and he threw a fit that involved summoning the spirits of darkness and dripping green slime.

Howl appears suave and cool when you first meet him, but as Sophie discovers, there’s a much less appealing side to him. To put it bluntly, he shirks responsibility, slithers away from things he doesn’t like, and pretends he’s not doing anything wrong. He’s not a bad guy, but as he tells Sophie, “Only way I can do something this frightening is to tell my self I’m not doing it!”
