I know we've all had a pretty rough few years by now, but thinking of Tim Drake helps keep it all in perspective. For instance, if you were 17-year-old Pre52 Tim this year, it means that Bruce died in 2022. Steph, Connor, Bart, Dad all died and Bludhaven had gotten nuked with Dana in it in 2021. No Man's Land happened in 2020, Knightfall in 2019 and your Mum died in 2018, before you'd even properly got the job. And you still can't vote.

in lieu of a long weekend

10pm, sunday, oct 8, 2023

it's canadian turkey-day tomorrow ~ it's windy and grey outside ~ there is pumpkin pie in the fridge and i'm wearing an extremely pleasing wooly sweater my housemate was going to give away. we've turned the heat on for the first time this season. the cozy season of the year has arrived.

reading finished victoria goddard's whiskeyjack, book 3 in the greenwing & dart series! reading this series for me is an exercise in noticing the easter eggs that tell me it was written by a medievalist, and an academic, and a medievalist academic with a degree from the program i'm currently in. there's so much in this particular volume about poetry analysis. she came so close to using the word 'semiotic' and actually did use the phrase 'exoteric.' while i might have quibbled about things like pacing and plot and how i still don't always think first-person is a good fit in the hands of most authors, these books are like tailor-made for me. i can't not enjoy them.

and then on the other hand, i spent some extremely happy hours this past week with patrick o'brian's post captain. when i first read the aubrey books, i was probably in high school, fresh out of racing through the hornblower series. because the aubreyad is-- i'll be honest-- better writing, but also demands more of you as a reader, i fully didn't appreciate like 80% of this book. i knew the series, as much by osmosis as by actual time spent reading, and reading it now? felt like coming home. especially since i now have the attention, and the ability, to read between the lines. to pick up on the irony, the allusions, the humor, the misdirection! the women oh my god how did i not appreciate sophie, diana, or mrs. williams before now. i didn't mind before how little of the larger world and society made it into the movie, but i actually understand the griping now. but even more than that, i found the ship action and actual, like, battle extremely tense and interesting this time; i was up well into the night at one point just to see what would happen next, because i was nervous for my dear boys.

watching friday night double-feature with @hematiterings where we enjoyed the first three new episodes of Our Flag Means Death and finished with another two of netflix's Arcane: League of Legends, which we're probably going to finish fairly soon so i'll focus on that one. just quickly though, had a great time with the first new ofmd episode, just extremely good work from all involved, and then was weirdly not as into the second two-- though the end of ep 3 was back to grand. i think in general i like where the season is going, and i'm going to withhold further comment until we've seen some more.

i was not expecting to like arcane as much as i have been. didn't have a clue what it was when we started, but the art style has absolutely blown me away. here's a quick run-down of the animation, which is a mix of hand-painted digital, 2D, and absolutely gorgeous. it looks like a video game and a painting at the same time-- not in the same way spiderverse combines animation and illustration, but with some familiar elements. people's eyes have this amazing jewel-like depth and clarity? scenery that made us go 'oh, paris looks so nice!' and 'man i love cyberpunk' and other such witticisms. but seriously, if you like good animation and also art nouveau-inspired steam-punk aesthetics, there's a lot here. plus a good (dare I? could league of legends be good, actually?) tragic story-line, and enough twists that i haven't seen coming, to really get me curious about what comes next.

listening a long time ago, probably back in 2021 around the time of the most recent album, i think @mankillercalledbunny was sharing playlists or links that featured The Amazing Devil, and at roughly the same time i had a spotify playlist include a track or two for me, and now here we are. had their two albums "ruin" and "the horror and the wild" on all week, which made it a bit hard to read at times because i would get caught in the lyrics. this is exactly the kind of music two people who met at the RSC would make, it is dramatic, sort of gothic, sort of folky, sort of theater. the contrary motion, the interweaving voices, esp. in the chorus of "marbles", is where i've been living recently. i like knowing this about joey batey, i like that he has this extra dimension now when i see him as jaskier! i hope he can find a way to come back to it again, whenever.

playing i finally (after how long!) got the wizard's ink well - witch's pendant - goblins (??) quest in stardew! not a hard one at all, but so satisfying to be able to use that hint that had been hovering there in the library for the past, oh, real-world year or so. i'm like 50 pieces of hardwood away from getting the ferry up and running too, and i'm excited to move off of the plateau i've been on and open up the next level of the world.

making i mentioned the pumpkin pie up top, and it did turn out well this year despite a distracted me happening to leave out the butter when mixing the filling-- i noticed before it got into the oven, luckily, and was able to add it in! but...while it was in the pie crust, which was kind of sloppy. no nicely pinched or braided crust for me this year. and then, since the size of can of pumpkin you buy here is always a little too big for the recipe, i tried out the smitten kitchen pumpkin bread that many friends have recommended before, and that has been a delight. moist without being dense or heavy, but still very substantial? a little bit less sugar than the recipe called for, and no freshly ground nutmeg, but we did have fresh ginger and overall it is very nice. it also rose architecturally, which was maybe a function of it being on a higher rack? or of me miss-counting scoops of baking soda? anyway, hilarious.

working on working on consistency. working on momentum. working on not getting in my own way. draft of this conference paper due 10/26, slides and notes for this guest lecture due 10/25, and the chapter abides. the conference paper serves it directly, however, which i feel good about. i keep finding new things to read about, and keep being glad i've continued researching, since i'm coming up with excellent (it feels) material to work with, but i can't let that get in the way of actually. writing.

Following his debut, Evans was cast in the action and thriller films Immortals (2011), The Raven (2012), and the re-imagined The Three Musketeers (2011).

In 2013, Evans starred as the antagonist Owen Shaw in Fast & Furious 6, and also played Bard the Bowman in Peter Jackson's three-part adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit.

Evans also portrayed the vampire Dracula in the character's 2014 film origin story Dracula Untold.

Evans then portrayed Gaston in Disney's live-action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast (2017), psychologist William Moulton Marston in the biographical drama Professor Marston and the Wonder Women (2017), and the Coachman in Disney's live-action remake of Pinocchio (2022). He released his debut album, At Last, on 22 November 2019. In 2020, he starred in a three-part miniseries The Pembrokeshire Murders. In 2021, he had a main role in the Hulu drama miniseries Nine Perfect Strangers. He then starred in the black ops military series Echo 3 (2022).

Stuff I'm Looking Forward To in March

Wow, somehow it's already month 3 of 2024. In addition to Daylight Savings Time (March 10 - Spring ahead), Ramadan (March 10-April 9), St. Patrick's Day (March 17), first day of Spring (March 19), Palm Sunday (March 24), Holi (March 25), Good Friday (March 29), and Easter (March 31) here is what's on my radar this month:

Movies:

Dune: Part Two

Denis Villeneuve has become one of the great visual stylists of recent years thanks to films like Arrival and Blade Runner 2049. I named his film Dune Part One, one of my Best Movies of 2021. How good Part One really was depends on Part Two, which drops 3/1.

Knox Goes Away

Michael Keaton has always been a tremendous actor and now he's back in the director's chair for the second time with a starring role about a contract killer who has a form of dementia and he attempts to connect with his estranged son. Oh and Al Pacino co-stars! Opens 3/15.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire

A Ghostbusters sequel is a tall order. Jason Reitman's 2021 sequel Ghostbusters Afterlife actually had its moments and it had a lot to say about living up to a legacy, in the film it's the grandchildren of Egon, but it could also be Jason Reitman about the fear and honor of continuing a film series that his dad Ivan began. The new sequel is directed by Gil Kenan, who co-wrote this with Jason. The fact that original Ghostbuster cast members are back gives me hope. Sequel drops 3/22.

Sheer Mag Playing Favorites

I was lucky enough to see Philly rockers Sheer Mag at House of Blues in May 2022. After two solid albums, they are finally back with their third, dropping on 3/1. (Review to come)

Liam Gallagher & John Squire Liam Gallagher John Squire

Former Oasis singer Liam Gallagher's solo career has been a mixed back, but his album As You Were was one of my Best Albums of the 2010s. As shown in the 2019 documentary Liam Gallagher: As It Was, he doesn't need to play music for money or fame, he has plenty. He plays because he loves music. Now he's doing a new album with John Squire, former guitarist for The Stone Roses. Sounds like a serious meeting of musical minds! Album drops 3/1.

The Black Crowes Happiness Bastards

The first new studio album from The Black Crowes since 2009 is cause for celebration. After a bitter break-up in 2015, the brothers Chris and Rich Robinson announced they were reuniting in 2019. In early 2020, I caught an acoustic live show from Brothers of a Feather (my last concert before the pandemic lockdowns) and since that show, The Black Crowes have had some reunion tours (NOTE: by reunion - I mean Chris and Rich, not the original lineup). They've released some anniversary albums, but this marks the group's first studio album in 15 years. Looking forward to it when it drops on 3/15.

The Dandy Warhols Rockmaker

I've always loved Portlandia's The Dandy Warhols. Through this blog, I've had the pleasure of interviewing lead Dandy Courtney Taylor-Taylor and keyboardist / bassist Zia McCabe, the band's 2019 Boston concert, and their excellent 2019 album Why You So Crazy. Now the band is back with a new album dropping on 3/15! (Review to come)

Film Festivals:

Boston Underground Film Festival

Boston's fun genre film festival for horror, fantasy and bizarre is back. I've had the pleasure of covering this fest from 2016 to 2019 and returning last year. The fest returns to The Brattle Theatre (Cambridge, MA) from 3/20 to 3/24!

Conventions:

Northeast Comic Con

I've had a blast covering the Northeast Comic Con for years now (read my coverage here) and the Spring 2024 edition returns with guests like Kevin Chapman (who I worked with on Monument Ave), a Growing Pains reunion of Tracey Gold, Jeremy Miller and Julie McCullough, The Go-Go's drummer Gina Schock and more! Convention is at the Boxborough Regency (Boxborough, MA) from 3/8-3/10. (Coverage to come).

Awards Season:

The awards season for the best of 2023 continues on with the Razzie Awards, actually the Worst of 2023 (3/9) and the Academy Awards (3/10).

God this is gonna make me sound so old, but Achy Breaky Heart. I was like 4 or 5 years old and it was EVERYWHERE so I guess it's no surprise.

The first band I specifically being into would be Foreigner because my parents liked them.

CDs and vinyls. I love collecting physical media. I love having something I can pick up and say "this has my favorite sounds on it"

Ooooh man, I think I gotta go with the handwritten thank you note I got from Frank Iero when I bought Barriers on vinyl.

Boke Pieces Storytime

I have realized that I have only written this in my diary; The first night I stayed up until sunrise by accident and had a forty minute trance because of it.

This story begins with an old habit that I acquired during the Easter holidays of this year 2023, which was basically reading frerard fanfics and staying there until three or four in the morning, it was entertaining, on the second of those nights I found a fic which I started reading and I didn't like it, but there was another version that was something similar to a "good ending" of that fic. On April 8, Holy Saturday, my curiosity got the better of me and I sat in my desk chair, recharged the computer in my oil paint case so it wouldn't explode, and started reading that "good ending" called BROKEN PIECES. I started reading it around four in the afternoon, so I thought I would finish reading it early, we know that didn't happen, I got so deep into the story, I was so into it, it seemed like I was hypnotized by how good was that fanfic, so that when I finished reading it I didn't even see the time, I looked up from the computer screen and looked at the window, witnessing one of the most beautiful sunrises I have ever seen in my life.

I clarify at this point that my happiness for this happening was because since 2021 I have a kind of goal of being awake as long as possible, if it was possible not to sleep at all.

At that time I was taking a treatment to strengthen my immune system, it was something called "transferon" or something similar; When I finished reading the fanfic and saw the sunrise, I waited a few minutes to go down to the main room of my house, I went out to the patio to process what had happened. And there I was, walking in circles (or I would say in a line back and forth) remembering and internally commenting on the fanfic. The story was great, everything that surrounded the fanfic.

A long time later I had breakfast, because I had to remain fasting for up to an hour after drinking the dose of the treatment that I mentioned, and as I mentioned, when I started reading the fanfic it was Holy Saturday, therefore at this point it was already Easter Sunday and Since I have a religious family, I was forced to listen to the Easter mass (which by the way was longer than the conventional ones) trying not to fall asleep. When I finished mass, I went out to the patio for a few minutes again and fell asleep for a very short time on the grass. It was clear that it was my first time without sleeping a full night, so my body was melted and I decided to finally take a short nap. in my room. I remember that I played mcr's boy division out of alarm XD.

After waking up, my brother called me to eat, and since I was downstairs I took the opportunity to go to the bathroom, so I took off my bracelets for hygiene, I went back up to my room with the bracelets in my hand even without them. Put them on and when I got to my room I closed the door and sat on the edge of my bed to put on my bracelets. I was looking at the floor, and while I was putting on a bracelet I think I fell asleep, but what scared me was that I saw three weeks of my life go by, lived, every day, every hour, every minute, every second and when I woke up suddenly, I was quite disconcerted to see that he was still sitting on the edge of my bed with my hands in the position that i was, putting on my bracelet. I looked at the time on my cell phone and only forty minutes had passed. Still quite dazed, I went down to the first floor, wet my face so as not to fall asleep again, and again went out to the patio to reflect on what had happened. To deal with the feeling I started cooking rice pudding, I made myself some coffee and when I finished cooking I went back up to my room. I remembered that that day (April 9th) was Gee's birthday and I made a drawing about it. After that, and to keep my mind busy, I dedicated myself to drawing ghosts for the rest of the afternoon.

These two events have been extremely relevant in my life for several reasons, and I can even say that I am quite fond of them. Anyway. I hope this anecdote was at least entertaining :D

The latter folks will mark the Resurrection on PASCHA, next Sunday – and then observe Bright Week, their annual homage to the Risen Christ; so for us, these delightfully edifying festivities will last until April 23.
