With Heartland as its last destination, it was finally the last day of the school’s world tour as well. Since Leo Duel School was the world’s market-leading duel school, and she the most successful graduate, it was a common task to accompany her father’s school for exhibition duels with local branches as well as other local duel schools. It was exhausting, even more draining than any big tournament she might participate in, but she was more fitting as LDS’ figurehead than her younger brother Reiji. He was born to lead so it was only natural for him to follow their father’s footsteps. But she wouldn’t want him to deal with the frenzy media or some of her really eager fans either. Because even if being successful and popular had its advantages, it also had its ugly and dark downsides. The one thing she probably missed the most out of everything she had to sacrifice for a life in public was privacy. She had to learn the hard way to make the most of these rare times. Rumours – true or false just for the damn sake of writing something about her – and that the world knew almost everything about her were taking a toll on her, too. This profession wasn’t easy, far from it. She already had experienced many difficult situations with all of them – the rainbow press, her fans and those who loathed her – but they still weren’t enough to capitulate with her profession. She was not only holding an important and responsible task as a role model for especially young and aspiring duelists. She also had the possibility to meet and duel so many people than before. So many encounters she wouldn’t be able to have if she would have chosen any other career. In all her life, she never had been an extroverted person so these meetings with a very big crowd weren’t her biggest strength. But she thrived on all encounters with few people around her. With them, she learned the most. Every time she came to this conclusion, she couldn’t help but smile. She would have never met him if she wouldn’t have become an Idol Duelist. It was so ironic. The media, her fans and those who disliked her were so obsessed with her and her public role, and even if recently all of them were slowly seeing through her game, none of them was aware of her best kept secret. And she was still determined enough to keep it that way. She could imagine that this would be a hot topic for a good amount of time, and all of them would do much to scramble to get her for an interview or a paparazzi shot. Everyone would want to know his name. But there was no way she would ever share him with any of them. “Ray, dear, would you mind attending the last exhibition duels and the after party without me?,” her stepmother asked who was also her manager. She turned off her tablet with a heavy sigh. “I’m not over the jet lag yet... ” “No, of course not, Himika. Could you just remember me what time we’ll be leaving tomorrow again, please?” “Tomorrow evening, eight o’clock.” “Thank you! So I’ll see you tomorrow morning, then?,” Ray assumed. Himika smiled and nodded. The car stopped behind the Heartland Duel School. A teacher of the Clover Branch – but Ray had already forgotten her name – opened the door. Ray wished her stepmother to get well soon before saying her goodbye and following the teacher inside the school. They talked a little, and after a short while, they reached the exclusive area for all the invited special guests where they could watch all scheduled exhibition duels. One of the other special guests was Sakaki Yusho, the pioneer and retired Dueling Champion of Action Dueling and the current headmaster of an other local duel school in Maiami City. Not to mention an old and close friend of her parents and one of the very few people who knew about her secret. Seeing him made her feel giddy inside but she held herself back. Once the other two special guests arrived – the current Dueling Champion Strong Ishijima and a second Idol Duelist she forgot the name as well –, the exhibition duels began. Ray watched them with particular interest. Not only because the young duelists reminded her of herself at that age. She was rooting for all duelists but she would be lying if she wouldn’t be a little bit biased for the LDS students. But no one disappointed her. Shijima Hokuto, the best student from the Xyz-Summon course, wasn’t able to win his duel. The same was with Todo Yaiba, the representative of the Synchro-Summon course. Only Kotsu Masumi, the best student from the Fusion-Summon course, could achieve a draw. The selected students from both branches, Clover and Spade, were good, even though all of them lacked precision. She was itching to challenge them, especially Todo’s opponent Kurosaki Shun. It was crazy to watch him pull out high rank monsters seemingly out of nowhere. But she hadn’t had time to admire his rough dueling style. The teacher who led her to this secluded area asked her unexpectedly for a few words to conclude the exhibition duels and to announce the after party. Ray was never fond of those unplanned situations but she accustomed herself to it thanks to being an Idol Duelist. The fleeting, grumpy look on the other Idol Duelist was enough for her to take her along. She even let her speak first. The shimmer in her eyes made this unusual offensive worth it. Once she finished her speech, the other Idol Duelist passed the microphone to Ray. “Thanks, dear. And thank you both – all duelists who participated in today’s exhibition duels as well as all spectators!,” she began. After that, she stepped forward. “I know that a defeat always leaves a bitter feeling behind, and even a draw doesn’t feel good enough – but these results are much more important than any wins! They give you the best and right opportunities to learn, to grow – to become a better duelist than before! Working for the win is much sweeter, more satisfying than a given one. But you’ll have plenty of time thinking about it, starting tomorrow. Let’s call it a day because tonight, we’re all winners!” The teenagers cheered while the adults applauded her. With the after party starting, her interview marathon as well as the meet and greet began. Even if she liked taking center stage once in a while, she was getting more and more exhausted, feeling the jet lag draining her as well. She dragged herself through the last interviews and was just about to call a cab when she felt a gloved hand on her bare left shoulder. She turned around to see Sakaki Yusho smiling down at her. “Wasn’t there a saying along those lines ‘always leave them wanting more’?” He winked knowingly. So she did interpret his coming right. With this, the giddy feeling inside her returned. They left the after party before the media got wind of it. “What about you?,” Ray wanted to know once they were in his car and on their way back to their hotel. “I don’t think Himika-san is already sleeping, right?,” Sakaki replied. “I brought a fine wine with me, and it’s been a while since I hung out with Himika-san!” Luckily, the car ride back didn’t take long. In the lobby, Sakaki handed her his key card with another knowing wink before he took out his mobile phone. The exhaustion from earlier long forgotten, Ray rushed to the stairs. It was a nice coincidence that his hotel room was on the same floor as hers, only four doors down the hallway. At first, she thought to change into other clothes, more fitting for this, but her longing was too strong so she headed for his hotel room instead. But no one was in there. Confused, Ray checked every room inside just to be sure but she came to the same conclusion as before. She sighed disappointed and locked it up again. It was then that a thought crossed her mind. She hurried back to her own room and opened it. Just as she thought – a young man with silver white hair and green strands was sitting at the window with the curtains drawn together behind the king sized bed. And just as usual, he was having a late night snack. “Oi, babe!,” he greeted her with his mouth full. “You’re back early!” Ray closed the door behind her, dropped her clutch and both key cards before running towards him. He didn’t have much time to push forward his plate with the omurice but he managed to catch her without her knocking down the food. Ray didn’t waste any more time and pressed her lips on his mouth. It was only then that the adrenaline slowed down. They deepened the kiss. She only let got him due to lack of air. After that, she took a seat on his lap. “Woah, someone missed me!” “Very,” Ray confirmed and gave him a nose kiss. She grinned. “Yummy!” “Oi! It’s mine!” But Ray turned around and took a bite from his omurice. “How did you sneak in anyway, Zarc?” The recipient clicked his tongue with a cheeky smirk: “I have some tricks up my sleeve.” Probably flirting with one of the maids. Not that she was jealous. But she was up for something different. She returned his cheeky smile and leaned in closer. “Wanna undress me?,” she tempted him with a hushed voice. “Hmm... ,” Zarc mumbled and placed a soft kiss on her free shoulder. “Would love to but I didn’t finish my omurice yet!” He drew his plate back to him. “Hungry?” “Aww, you dare to make me wait?!,” Ray complained and started to caress his right ear with her lips. She felt him wavering but he managed to shake her off right away. “Yes, missy, because it’s totally not cool to waste any food!,” he explained and continued to eat. “If you’re too cool to eat – your loss!” Ray blinked for a moment. Then she giggled. Being an Idol Duelist made her a little too much spoiled so she wasn’t used to not get what she wanted right away anymore. It felt good to have someone by her side who was still so down-to-earth in this hectic chaos with the frenzy media, her fans and the ones who disliked her. And there was definitely no way she would ever share him with any of them.
