I was honored to talk to my friend and long-time instructor, Grandmaster Scot Conway, on the most recent episode of my podcast. It was August 17, 2005 that I first walked into Grandmaster Scot’s dojo. I have trained with several masters, coaches, and instructors, but none of their instruction, mentorship, and friendship has been as meaningful or impactful to me as much as that of this man. I am most certainly imperfect.. In the areas where I do well, I owe much of my accomplishment and character to the investment of Grandmaster Scot. Of course, my most significant appreciation of his help is the application of his teaching in repairing the core of what was broken in mine and Andrea’s marriage. Early into our marriage we separated for about a year and a half. We reunited in December of 2009 with tools to continually make our relationship stronger and more meaningful for each of us. On October 19, I was promoted to 3rd degree blackbelt in Tekio Jutsu, the adaptive martial arts program @aloya319 and I teach at the Blind Community Center of San Diego. (Free classes each Thursday and Saturday at 9:00 AM) (Andrea was also promoted to 3rd degree black belt, and she has now been named our program’s cheif instructor.) In these 2 clips, I demonstrate dynamic movement as part of my self-defense and pressure tested response with Sifu Harinder Singh, President and CEO of the Jeet Kune Do Athletic Association. It was an honor to have Sifu Singh as my partner. For my blind friends out there, the zapping sound you here is a shock knife that I am defending entirely by feel. Don’t worry. Last Wednesday, while we were in Las Vegas, @aloya319 and I got to train in a seminar taught by the @pit_master ... Mr. John Hackleman himself. He’s a total badass, but he’s also got a great sense of humor. While we were getting in position for this picture, he said, “You guys are kempo with an m. I like kempo with an m more than kenpo with an n. I’m kempo with an m too.” As I understand it, Mr. Hackleman started with kanukenbo, and used it for the foundation to his art of Hawaiian Kempo. Kajukenbo heavily influenced Guardian Kempo, the art that Andrea and I teach and have studied for the last 14 years.
