otis driftwood x reader (polaroid photos)
bonus content, bonus content !! written for @lucifers-horror-harem because i forgot a whole half of the summer prompt she sent me 👀 what can i say, the spirit compelled me in such a way and now i get to deliver another little drabble for y'all !! WARNING for talk of murder but other than that, surprisingly fluffy. 💗 also it weirdly feels very mama firefly centric but i swear it is still technically otis x reader.
[☀ requests for summer prompts are still open, and will be all month ☀]
Mama loved taking photos.
She loved a lot of things that helped her keep the family together, or to keep mementos of them, anyway. Cooking dinners, keeping scrap books, taking photos. Family bonding.
Mama may have been a lot of things, but she was always best at being a mother.
You'd fitted into the family just perfectly; joined her precious hoard of children. Kept Baby occupied and pulled your weight around the house with RJ, you always found time for Tiny and you made Otis happier than Mama thinks she might of ever seen him.
Mama's scrapbooks usually lean towards the more grotesque side. Blood and skins and anguish and pain. A real horror show held within leather bound pages and pasted in polaroids.
But there was one she kept, had been keeping since long before her any of her babies were born. In this scrapbook she kept the other parts of her life, of all your lives.
Baby pictures, locks of hair, candid shots on sunny days and posed pictures on special occasions. Mama, with a sash across her chest and a tiara on her head. Baby, with a gap still between her teeth, and Otis give a smile around a birthday cake. RJ poses bashfully by one of the first cars he fixed up proper. Long before the fire ever touched him, Tiny half-smiles at the camera.
Nowadays, Baby is usually the only one receptive enough for these types of pictures. She poses and smiles while her brothers grumble and snap "get that away, mama". Even you're not too fond of the camera, shying away unless Baby can convince you otherwise.
That doesn't mean that the photographs with you in them aren't mama's favourite. Quite the contrary, actually. Because where you are, Otis is sure to be close by.
There are several pictures, mostly candid, of you and Otis, pasted proudly in this album. Photographs where Otis doesn't have that cold, cutthroat look in his eyes. Instead he looks fond. Fond of you tucked against his side. Fond of the way you smile self-consciously at the camera, or at least Mama, who is holding it. In almost every picture he looks fond of you. Nothing more, nothing less. That's how mama likes him best, though she'd rather be dead than the day ever come that she had tell him so.
But even so, here in these pages, with their polaroid memories, Mama can see what could have been and what always is, somewhere below the surface but there all the same.
