MGI Transforms Plastic Waste Into Floating Farms for Landless Farmers

Bangladesh is a country that faces multiple challenges due to climate change and environmental degradation. One of the most pressing issues is the loss of agricultural land due to rising water levels and floods. According to the Dhaka Tribune, there are over 4 million landless farmers in the country, who struggle to find livelihoods and food security. Moreover, the rivers of Bangladesh are heavily polluted with plastic waste, which carries 73,000 tons of plastic waste every day, as reported by The Daily Star. This not only harms aquatic life, but also contributes to global warming.

MGI, a conglomerate that has products that contribute to plastic pollution, felt it was their responsibility to help change this situation. After two years of research with agricultural scientists, they invented a new farming process that uses plastic waste as a resource. They created Plastic Farming, an initiative to turn plastic waste into floating farms.

MGI Plastic Farming To spread the project, they partnered up with Bidyanondo, a voluntary organization that brought the landless farmers together, and the local government’s agriculture officers who taught them the process of Plastic Farming. Together, they taught farmers how to collect plastic from water bodies and use simple bamboo frames, the collected bottles, water hyacinth, and crop seeds to begin Plastic Farming.

Initially over 500 farmers around Pirojpur and Gopalganj were taught about Plastic Farming. Then nationwide activations, a free website, video tutorials and manuals attached to MGI products were released to help other farmers. To take care of any potential microplastic, the farmers were shown how to release fungi around the sites.

The project had a positive impact on the lives of the farmers and the environment. It created 247,1054 acres of potential farmland, provided land to 750 landless farmers, formed the habit of collecting plastic among the farmers, collected 25 tons of plastic from the rivers, and reverted 750 climate refugees to farmers. The project also increased the nation’s productivity, strengthened food security and changed agricultural norms.

MGI’s Plastic Farming is an example of how a brand can take responsibility for its environmental impact and create a solution that benefits both the people and the planet. It is a testament to the power of innovation and collaboration to tackle the challenges of the 21st century.

Kishan moved to Jharkhand while Mukesh found his path to Bengal as the environment outside Bihar seemed more conducive for their cricketing careers, forcing them to leave their homeland behind.The latest episode in this unpleasant sequence panned on Friday at Patna when two teams turned up to play the Ranji Trophy Elite B group match against Mumbai at the Moin-ul-Haq stadium.One team was selected by Bihar Cricket Association Secretary Amit Kumar and another outfit came with the blessings of BCA President Rakesh Tiwary.Eventually, the side that had the backing of Tiwary and captained by veteran left-arm spinner Ashuthosh Aman played the match against the 41-time champions."First of all, why should they select the Moin-ul-Haq stadium for this match? There are better facilities at the Urja Stadium in Rajbansi Nagar which is in Patna itself."Such episodes will only cause damage to Bihar cricket as we have a lot of talented cricketers,” Aditya Verma, a former BCA official and the original petitioner during the 2013 IPL spot-fixing case, told PTI.The squabbling in the BCA dates back to 2002 when the BCCI under its then president Jagmohan Dalmiya suspended the association run by former Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav.The Dalmiya regime gave recognition to the faction led by Amitabh Choudhary, who later rose to become the acting secretary of the BCCI.In between, the pool turned murkier after former India all-rounder Kirti Azad also formed the Association of Bihar Cricket, while Verma and Prem Ranjan Patel constituted the Cricket Association of Bihar."At one time, there were four (cricket) associations in Bihar. 1, Supreme Court to hear plea challenging premature release of Anand Mohan on May 8

Today, the Supreme Court of India agreed to hear a petition on May 8, 2023, challenging the Bihar Government’s decision to grant pre-mature release to former Bihar MP Anand Mohan. He was accused of the mob lynching of Gopalganj District Magistrate G Krishnaiah in 1994. The matter was presented before the Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud by the Advocate Tanya Shree (Petitioner’s counsel) for urgent listing. CJI agreed to list the matter for hearing on May 8, 2023. The petition to be addressed by the top Court was filed by the widow of District Magistrate, Uma Krishnaiah. The District Magistrate was killed after an attack led by Mohan through a mob. As a result of this, Mohan was sentenced to life imprisonment whereas on 24th April he came out of jail after serving 14 years on the grounds of remission of a sentence given by the Bihar Government. According to the remission policy of Bihar state, a murder convict of an on-duty public servant was not eligible for premature release. This Bar was eliminated after amending the remission policy in April. Therefore, Uma Krishnaiah approached the Supreme Court challenging the circular issued on April 10 by the Bihar Home Department amending Rule 481(1)(a) of the Bihar Prison Manual 2012. She also challenged Anand Mohan’s premature release. Hearing all these issues, CJI ordered to list the matter for hearing on May 8.
