Conageddon: Luisa d’Oliveira’s Panel + associated stuff
So it’s just my luck that immediately after posting my Richard/Luisa recap, a whole bunch of the Conageddon panels including that one became available online! I definitely encourage people to check them out!
Unfortunately the people who taped them missed Luisa’s solo panel and Richard’s solo panel. So I will still recap those to the best of my ability like I was planning to.
PANEL
- As with all the panels, it was introduced with a fan video - it was this one that had an angsty/uplifting focus on Emori finding acceptance with spacekru. <3 Luisa said afterwards that she loves watching videos that fans cut together because it’s seeing her character's journey through their eyes.
Tumblr media
- She talked about the backstories she’s come up with for Emori. She had different ideas and then the stuff with Baylis filled in some gaps but left a lot open. (Some of this came up at Unity Days also btw! I just don't think I wrote it up then because I didn’t have time. *hides*) She thinks the real Baylis was someone who collected outcast/mutated children and basically raised her, in an abusive and psychologically manipulative way. Her headcanon is that Otan was not her biological brother, but that she bonded with him during that time and they’d gotten out together.
- Going into season five, she said she had two ideas about what could happen with Emori in space -- she would either end up friends with everyone, or she'd not know how to deal with it and become more antagonistic. Which is basically what happened to John Murphy, so she was like “I nailed it” for both of them, hee.
- She has a project coming up but it’s on a new show/pilot and can’t say anything about it. [Note from Nicole: To be clear it might just be a minor role and not necessarily a big 100-affecting deal.]
- I asked her a question about her video game role in "Far Cry 5" -- she did the motion capture as well as voice acting for the game! So she talked about what that was like, wearing the suit with the beads and moving around a room reacting to people who weren’t there. The hardest part was knowing how much to act with her face, because on TV you would try to use subtle expressions, but the animation might not catch it and just look blank.
Tumblr media
- In season 4 it was interesting having scenes with a lot of new characters and she’d think about what Murphy would have told her about them. A moment that didn't make it onscreen is when they're planning to go up in the rocket, John says something snarky and Bellamy gives him a "Shut up, Murphy" or something like that, and on one of the takes she just immediately GLARED at Bellamy like how dare you talk to him like that. *G*
- An audience member asked how she would want Emori to die. She says "happy", she would like an ending like Monty and Harper had, either that or in a "blaze of glory." Emori would not go down quietly.
- Moderator Jo followed this up with asking if she would lay down her life for John Murphy. Luisa says absolutely, he would for her and she would also, that's been established many times. Pointed to the scene in God Complex when she was trying to convince him not to fight for her. (She started cutely “reenacting” it like noooo save yourself and joked that was the original version before she helped them rewrite it.)
- Luisa’s Book Club recs: "The Brain That Changes Itself" by Norman Doidge and "Man's Search for Meaning" by Viktor Frankl. She also loves Jane Austen and a book character she wishes she could transport into The 100 is Elizabeth Bennet.
- A character she would like to do more with is Indra. She never had any real female mentor relationships, at least before space.
- There were two really moving comments/questions in a row about her portrayal of Emori from people with diabilities, one said it was so important especially to see disabled love on TV, the other talking about the humanity and poise she gives her like few other disabled characters. She acknowledged she comes to it as someone who doesn’t have that experience in real life and wants to be respectful. She always just tried to ground it in something real and draw from the times she’s felt judged and isolated in her life, the feeling of walking into a room where everyone else is part of a family and she didn't belong there. :..( Authentic without it being the only thing that defines her.
Tumblr media
- Toward the end she was trying out her English (Cockney) and Irish acccents. Not bad at them! She said she once talked to a drunk man in Ireland and he believed her fake accent, just thought she was from some other town. But she thinks it wouldn't have worked if he was sober. *g*
- Her favorite hot snack on set is pierogies. She was definitely also asked about her love of Italian food and what she likes to cook but I forgot! There was one audience guy who said he also has his friends over for dinner to watch the 100 and she was like “we were probably cooking at the same time.”
- Asked to describe Emori in season six with one emoji. She eventually went with “the one that's a straight line mouth and big eyes” -- which is actually the "Neutral Face". LOL clever.
- HI I GOT BACK UP ON THE MIC AND ASKED ABOUT THE "JOHN MURPHY I FELL IN LOVE WITH" SCENE and when (or if) Emori's feelings changed between that and the finale. Luisa says: Emori's feelings never changed, that wasn't the problem. To her that scene was about her trying to be logical and think with her head. When he was injured, her heart took over and everything else went out the window.
- What Emori now (or at the end of S5) would tell herself in her first episode: "There are people worth trusting even if they don't seem that way at first."
- Luisa’s advice to her own younger self (I’m pulling this from a livetweet): Don’t be so afraid of taking chances, saying or doing the wrong thing. Just keep paying attention and keep your mind open. Be kind. Be confident. You're good.
OTHER LUISA STUFF
- While her VIP and panel were criminally under-attended compared to some of the guests, I was really happy to see a ton of people did visit her in the autograph room and she had a good line throughout. She even got an Emori Pop! from the same person who’d made mine.
- I should also mention that when I interrupted her and Richard’s beer pong tournament in my party dress Friday night, she immediately recognized me as the one who always dresses at Emori and told Richard that was me. *blush* So I decided to go to her auto table on the day when I was in the outfit and my friend captured a shot of her hugging me.
Tumblr media
- Whew, the other big thing was that I gave both her and Richard the mixtapes I made for their characters. Hers is basically the same as the one I posted for Emori Appreciation Week... She seemed genuinely touched and happy and was like “I’ll probably put these into my workbook” and I was like ohhh no haha I hope you just like *one* of them. She already knows “Creep” is on it, was saying it’s a big Emori song for her and describes exactly how she felt in vulnerable moments.
Tumblr media
- I also brought up something she said on one of the early panels (with all the girls) about how Emori carries stress in her body and I did notice that in the scene she was talking about. I also noticed that when she's scared she usually reacts with anger like she's trying to cover it. She said she definitely did that intentionally, it’s an animal-like instinct Emori has -- when some animals are threatened, they try to go “I’M SCARY!!” (aww) Another way she’s like a cat.
- Also on Sunday toward the end, I ran into some of the cast near the VIP hallway and Luisa grabbed me and thanked me for my questions at her panel. ;___; This woman.

Note
How do you feel about the radio calls being addressed in the premiere? It bums me out a bit. I wanted them to be a turning point for Bellarke, but we know s6 starts out becho centric.
No. We don’t know that s6 starts out b/e centric. Who told you that? Where did you get that impression? We know that they’re still together because they haven’t dealt with the repercussions of the last 2 weeks on the ground, and bellamy spent most of that time with Clarke rather than Echo. But that is not the same thing as being b/e centric. Having a relationship be canon does NOT mean that the relationship is central to the story or endgame or that it is important for itself. Clarke and Bellamy have been “canon,” in one form or another, with other people multiple times. Satisfied girl, Roma and Bree, Finn, Raven, Niylah, Gina, Lxa, and now Echo. Are we SURE being a canon ship means they are central? I think this is a failure with shipping analysis, when you only accept kiss/confess/sex as canon. Because it only works as REAL proof when the story has magical genitals, and having sex mystically makes them forever tied as soulmates, true loves and happily ever after endgame.
I mean. There ARE actual stories out there like that, and quite a few. So I’m not saying that this can’t be correct. In Disney stories, for instance, we get a lot of that (no sex because G rated, though.) And Disney is pretty widespread and influential. And I believe this “purity culture” also presents this concept of love and romance. It doesn’t make it true irl, and it doesn’t make it an accurate interpretation of stories that are NOT telling a magical genitals story. Oh sorry. There’s probably some other name for that kind of romance, but I don’t know what it is, since it’s not my jam. In this story, sex, romance and love is a PART of the characters’ lives, and it doesn’t dictate their narrative or character arcs. (Every time I mention this, though, I start getting anons calling, particularly, Clarke a slut. But also Bellamy. Because they think that since Bellarke is/should be endgame, they should be unable to love or have sex with anyone else. And that’s not how this story or life works.)
Don’t get confused between a plot device and what the story is about. B/E is a plot device to get Bellamy, Clarke, Octavia, the blake siblings and bellarke where they need to go in the narrative. The story is ABOUT, Clarke and Bellamy. It is not, nor has it ever been, nor will it ever be, B/E centric. Because there is no story there for the narrative to hang on. B/E is NOT the story they are telling. COULD it be the story if the story were something different? It most certainly could!!! MANY stories in The 100 could be the main story if you wrote it from that direction. Every single romance could be told as the main ship of their own love story. Every single antagonist could be the hero of their own story. All of the side characters have their own narrative arc that could be expanded to be their own book or show. That means they are well written and not cardboard. It’s a good thing. But that doesn’t mean they are the main story. The main story is Clarke. Bellamy, Octavia, Bellarke, the Blakes, and The salvation of the human race/their people. If you follow those stories, the likelihood that you get off base is lower. Because those ARE at the center of this show.
There is no point in s5 where b/e, the canon ship, was central to the narrative IF it did not ALSO involve either Clarke OR Octavia. It was Bellamy centric. It was not, however about b/e. It was about both Bellarke and the Blake siblings. Those were the conflicts. Those were the main relationships. It was about how they all had changed and how Bellamy had to choose. He chose Octavia over Echo. He chose Clarke over Octavia. And now he’s got the decision to be made in season 6. Does he choose Clarke or does he choose Echo. (funny, that’s the question Chelsey joke/asked at Conageddon.)
I am sorry if this does not work for a b/e shipping centric interpretation, but shipping interpretations can be wrong if you pick a ship that the story is not about. Because you’re not JUST enjoying a ship you love, you’re also trying to make sense of the main story THROUGH the ship. If you pick a side ship to enlighten the main story, you’d better hope it’s central enough to help you follow the story or you’ll get lost. And if you’re hoping for your ship to be the central story when it’s not, you ARE going to be disappointed. Loving your ship is not ever wrong. But using your ship to interpret a story that is not ABOUT your ship? That can be wrong. Not morally wrong, just incorrect. I mean, every ship is going to shed SOME light on the narrative, I think, but sometimes, it’s in a supportive role, not main. It SUPPORTS the main story. B/E is a supportive ship, not a main ship and not central to the plot. It just isn’t. It supports Bellamy’s development and the reunion of Bellarke and dissolution (and eventual repair) of the Blakes.
The story of b/e is about loyalty, family and…this is not from a shipping perspective, but from a narrative one… Bellamy choosing between Clarke and Echo. That. HAS. To. Happen.
And it’s going to become an imperative sooner rather than later.
We saw one pic with b/e together. And Clarke was in the scene, looking visibly uncomfortable. That is not b/e centric. If anything it’s c/b/e centric. It’s a love triangle. It’s the choice. Clarke or Echo. Choose Echo and you leave Clarke on the outside to suffer, even when she pretends it’s fine. (It is an echo of how he left her on earth and took spacekru to safety. THAT is intense.)
We can’t have an informed choice here unless Bellamy knows about the 2199 calls. Which he now knows. HOWEVER, unless he talks to her, it’s just his assumptions. He needs to talk to her.
Therefore? How do I feel about them talking about it right away? GREAT!
It’s a plot point that appeared AT THE END OF SEASON 4!!!! And it left us hanging for ALL OF SEASON 5!!!! And it became a turning point for Bellamy in the season finale!!!!
At the end of season 4, I said that was a cliffhanger and we’d need to address it before we could move on. Then, instead of addressing it right away, they dragged it out, referenced it and had Clarke REFUSE to tell him, which told me it was 100% presented as romantic, because non-romantic partners don’t need to keep secrets about non-romantic feelings for their non-romantic partners, but non-romantic partners DO need to keep secrets about ROMANTIC feelings for said partners. And then, season 5 became about how Clarke and Bellamy needed to RECONNECT. Their reunion ended up being more than one scene. Or one episode. It was a continual process throughout the season UNTIL the finale where Madi played parent trap and exposed her secret feelings and devotion.
ANNND it brought them back to where they were at the end of season 4. With an about face on Bellamy’s anger at her betrayal almost exactly like what happened in the rover. “wait, you care for me that much? ok i’m not mad anymore. i was mad because i thought you didn’t care about me.” Except NOW they have a love triangle in the way, which gives them a ROMANTIC obstacle instead of a survival or a political obstacle.
It’s not like the politics or survival is going to go away. But the romantic obstacle needs to be sorted out. Because these two now NOT non-romantic partners will be working together closely, while he ALSO has a canon romantic partner. That gives him, yes, two romantic partners. And Clarke will not pursue him because that’s who she is. So it’s up to Bellamy. Except Echo gets a say, TOO. Does she want to be with a man who is in love with someone else? Was she or was she not CORRECT when she said everything would change between them when they got to the ground. Because they were there for like 30 seconds before Bellamy’s true love and soulmate came back to life. Echo is not his true love or his soulmate. Echo is his family, he loves her and cares for her, and is loyal to her, though. So this is a sticky pickle!
Damn right I want them to talk about the 2199 calls in ep 1. I want it to be canon and explicit and I want them both to go about being “non-romantically” partnered knowing that Clarke is in love with him and Bellamy returns the feelings. And I want Bellamy to be with Echo KNOWING that he loves Echo, but he is IN LOVE with Clarke.
I want the whole fandom to realize that their feelings for each other are NOT platonic, and that messes everything up.
YES.
PLEASE.
GIVE US THE GLORIOUS MESS.
Let’s talk about 2199 days apart, but never letting go of each other.
:)

Conageddon 2 VIP Party - My Experience
Finally home from Boston after an incredible time at Conageddon 2. Wanted to write down my thoughts so I can remember as much as possible. I’ll put it under the cut because I’m sure it’s going to be long. Going to recap each day individually.
Tumblr media
Friday was probably the most anticipated night of the convention. As soon as Tarra, Anna, and I scored VIP tickets I had been counting down the days. Holy cow was this night better than I could ever have imagined. Met some awesome people before the cast arrived and quickly started making friends. Once the cast got there is when the magic really kicked in.
There were several times I came close to Bob, Zach, and Tasya. Didn’t see Eliza or Chelsey for a while, and Richard and Luisa went straight for beer pong. As you can imagine there were lots of people asking for selfies and trying to get their attention. So we all kind of hung back and just enjoyed the party. Finally we managed to make our way over by Bob. The poor guy was already drenched in sweat, which since I can relate hardcore (#alwayssweaty) that is what we ended up talking about. He mentioned that he wanted to make his way over to play beer pong with Richard so I was like okay let’s go! I tried to clear a path for him to follow but about midway over he got stopped a few more times.
So at this point I’m over by the beer pong table by Luisa and Richard. Which was a total blast. Richard was so into playing it was like we were just hanging out at a college party. When Bob finally made it over we ended up standing by each other at one point. He looked over at me and I kid you not just put his arm around my shoulder. It wasn’t like I had even asked for a hug or to take a photo with him. He just PUT HIS ARM AROUND ME UNPROMPTED, like we were old friends. Anna said my eyes grew 3 sizes. Also the most on brand thing ever happened to me. When Bob was over by the beer pong table with us, Sucker by the Jonas Brothers came on. So I basically lost my shit.
Eventually Anna, Tarra, and I saw that the group of people by Eliza was diminishing so we went over to talk with her. She was so sweet to us and our conversation is one I’ll never forget. Once again we commented on how dang warm it was. The poor girl was like I don’t know what I was thinking I’m wearing wool. Then she just casually goes my boobs are sweating so bad. So yep, stoop and talked to Eliza Taylor about boob sweat. #relatable.
Tumblr media
A little while later when Bob was back over near us I finally was able to ask him to take a selfie with us. We’d probably interacted 4 or 5 times during the party at this point. I didn’t want to take up too much of his time trying to take individual photos, so I figured the three of us would just take one big one with him. It was funny because Bob and I are so tall in comparison to Tarra and Anna. That led to some funny moments because Tarra was like hiding out behind my shoulder. I was trying to get her to come more into the frame. Bob’s reaction (as eventual pose in the photo) was priceless.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I spent a good chunk of the night on the dance floor. Zach and Chelsey were crazy absolutely tearing it up. If you’ve seen the photos Conageddon shared you’ll see me in the background of SEVERAL dancing pics. Cupid shuffled with Chelsey and she was getting soooo into it. At one point they played Dropkick Murphys and Zach led us all in an Irish jig. Anna and Tarra were over by beer pong when Eliza and Bob finally got to play against Richard and Luisa. However it got so crowded that they ducked out. So we spent the majority of that time dancing with Chelsey and Zach.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Towards the end of the night we all went over and were just hanging out by the beer pong table again. Richard and Luisa were still playing (and still winning). We were able to finally get a photo with Richard and Luisa. After we were sitting near the beer pong table and Luisa looks over and goes, oh my gosh I didn’t even realize you guys were wearing matching outfits. “It’s like you came from the stars!” We ended the party watching them secure victory in their final game.
Tumblr media
The VIP party was hands down the coolest night of my life. Getting to hang with the cast in such a casual setting. Luisa commented to Anna that she really liked how it just felt like we all were at a real party. Can’t wait to do it again (hopefully) next year!
