kara_merica_bear What a day. I have spent the past few days reliving the highs and lows of big boat Olympic selection.

This morning I got to witness the flood of emotion as the 8+, 4-, and 4X were named to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Team. Complete joy and relief mixed with the exhaustion from the last few weeks of seat racing almost every day. For some, this is their first, second, or third (@megmus 😉) Olympic team. For some, they have tried and failed multiple times to make a Senior National Team but today made their dream a reality and found themselves on the Olympic Team.

The big boat naming date is BRUTAL. Inevitably you have to watch teammates, or BE the teammates, who have worked just as long and hard as you, who have pushed you to be better than you ever thought possible, fall just short of the Olympic dream. We train for so many hours a day for so many years for so little in return. When the time comes and you fall on the wrong side it is devastating, and can feel like it was all for nothing.

After I was cut from the 2016 Olympic Team I remember feeling so lost and angry at myself. I wrongly assumed I had reached my potential in the sport and was so overwhelmed because I was 25 years old, had zero income or savings and felt like I had no skills to get a job. Let's just say it was a rough ride figuring out how to spend my time while I was deciding whether or not it was worth it for me to continue rowing.

Instead of dwelling on my shortcoming or hard feelings for the selection process I eventually decided it would serve me best to focus on all the great improvements I had made and then identify and work on my weaknesses. For me, part of that meant seeking out new experiences. While difficult at the time, change really is a powerful thing. It gave me some incredibly valuable perspective that I am so grateful for today.

Cheers to all my teammates whose dream came true today. It has been a long road to reach this first step of the Olympic dream. You inspire me daily to show up and perform to the best of my ability. And to my teammates who will not be heading to Tokyo next month - thank you for inspiring me daily to show up and perform to the best of my ability

#sculling #rowing #kara kohler #im so pumped #also I recognize carnegie lake in the first black and white image 👀 #also I have been following the rowing trials since the 2016 selection and I notice that almost no one gets usw1x on their first try? #like gevvie went up for it in 2008 but didn’t make it so she went to med school but got it in 2012 and 2016 #unfortunately I am not aware of the stats of usw1x selection in 2004 or earlier haha #I always get Olympic fever when the Olympics roll around and start training harder #I haven’t rowed in a while but I’ve actually started running for the last 2 weeks which is a huge step for me #my body isn’t built to be a runner yet here I am. running. (my body is more suited to rowing bc I’m tall. muscular. obsessed with technique) #I miss rowing but I have so much emotional baggage with the sport and idk if I’ll ever row at a competitive level again lol... o well

how is gevvy doing?

aww you are so sweet to ask. i finished my superstar pop princess gevvy the bard’s campaign a while back i was so emotional about it.

i think in the period immediately after defeating the netherbrain she had a rough time because her girlfriend flew off on a dragon to liberate her people through revolution and then her label immediately pinged her and was like “so you ARE contractually obligated to play the last leg of your tour that you missed because you got abducted by aliens and then were busy saving the world. and also you have to produce one more album with us during.”

they had her in a bit of a bind because she DID break into one of the board member’s houses rob him and then kill him which the record company knows but cannot prove. (it was raphael. her girlfriend wanted that hammer. what was gevvy supposed to do.) so Gevvy just had to lock in and get on the road. saving the world did make her the most popular and beloved she has ever been in her career so it all went pretty well aside from a few minor diplomatic incidents in menzoberranzan (almost having to talk to her mom.)

she managed to convince gale she was actually famous when she showed to guest lecture for his students. big accomplishment. her album semi-inspired by her experiences sold like crazy enough for her to consider starting her own label partially to make sure she has enough silly nepo jobs to give out to her friends. astarion was her costume consultant for 6 weeks. never resolved her beef with halsin but donated the proceeds from the lead single to his dumb orphanage anyways. they all got copies of the album also. and a visit. she wants those kids to like her more.

she never managed to convince lae’zel she was a celebrity before saving the world. Lae’zel’s people are so confused why the Great Liberator is dating a random istik who sings for money and Gevvy’s fans are so confused as to why the most famous pop princess in faerun is linked to an insurgent githyanki warlord. love wins <3
