PA’s first professional sales and marketing degree program ready to grow
Bloomsburg University has been granted approval by the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education to offer a Bachelor of Science degree in professional sales and marketing effective immediately, becoming the only one of its kind in Pennsylvania.
“There is a need within Pennsylvania that this program will address,” said Monica Favia, chair of the Department of Marketing and Professional Sales. “The addition of the major along with BU's membership in the University Sales Center Alliance represents a distinctive advantage for Bloomsburg University and its students. This fall the first three students will graduate with the major.”
Todd Shawver, dean of the Zeigler College of Business, feels the new major is going to be impactful. “The Professional Sales major is a unique and innovative program within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania,” said Shawver. “The program will have a big impact on regional, national, and global economies and will provide our students with boundless and lucrative career opportunities.”
Professional selling is one of the most common jobs for students graduating with a sales degree. Recent research suggests that 60 percent of all business majors and 88 percent of all marketing majors begin their professional careers in a sales-related role.
BU was first named among the top North American schools in 2015 by the Sales Education Foundation’s (SEF) listing of the best universities offering professional sales education. BU is one of only five Pennsylvania institutions included in the listing.
Favia said SEF recognizes institutions for elevating the sales profession through university education. “This recognition will help our students to secure professional sales positions,” she said.
Course requirements for the professional sales and marketing major and its minor are similar. Students also have the opportunity to test their skills at various national sales competitions and internally at the annual on-campus competition. In addition, one of the program requirements is to engage in real-world selling. BU sales students have had great success in the sales profession securing positions with a number of corporations.

Trustees approve professional sales and marketing major
Bloomsburg University’s Council of Trustees approved a new major in professional sales and marketing at its recent quarterly meeting.
The new major in the Zeigler College of Business will need approval from the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education Board of Governors before it’s offered. The professional sales and marketing major builds upon BU’s professional sales specialization in the marketing major.
The sales program — the only one offered in the State System — prepares students in the art and science of professional selling so upon graduation they may be an immediate contributor toward the improvement of shareholder value of any and all organizations that invite them aboard.
“If you want to be the top applicant for any job and have a competitive mindset, this program would be perfect for you.” says Britny Keyes ‘19, who graduated in May with a degree in business administration marketing and won the annual Bloomsburg University/UPS Sales Competition after finishing second the year before. “If you apply yourself through this program you’ll be given the opportunity to succeed and network with professionals from all over the country to find highly rewarding sales careers and opportunities.”
Last fall, BU was admitted as an associate member to the University Sales Center Alliance (USCA) — a consortium of sales centers connecting university faculty members with many different backgrounds and areas of expertise.
Together, these educators advocate for the continuing advancement of the sales profession through teaching, research and outreach. Associate membership is meant to serve as a mentoring period during which full members assist a university as it works towards full membership.
BU is the 51st university to have membership and only the second university in Pennsylvania. In order to qualify as a member, a sales program must meet specific criteria including a specified curriculum, a sales lab, a director, an active sales advisory board, and participation in sales competitions.
What does this membership for mean for BU students?
“Students have the opportunity to earn certification under the USCA as a Certified Professional Sales Student,” says Monica Favia, associate professor and chair of marketing and professional sales. “This sends a signal to potential employers that the student has met the rigorous criteria as set forth by the USCA. So far five BU students have earned the certification. In addition, corporations often seek out USCA universities, for recruiting.”

SCM program named tops by Study.com
Bloomsburg University's supply chain management program has been recognized by Study.com as one of the top schools in the country for the major. BU offers a B.S.B.A. in supply chain management, as well as a minor.
SCM makes graduates competitive in the workforce with training in SAP, Salesforce, and Block Chain. BU’s undergraduate program, combining principles of technology and business, offers a virtual business world where students and faculty interact, brainstorm ideas and make decisions. SCM concepts and principles learned in the classroom come to life through visits to manufacturing facilities and guest lectures from industry leaders.
“My favorite part about this major is there are so many different things you can do,” says Jennifer Stolz, a senior supply chain management major. “For example, you can do procurement, operations and production, and logistics and distribution. If you think about it every company needs supply chain management to run smoothly, so it will always be in high demand.”
BU's program is AACSB-accredited and prepares students for Six Sigma, SAP, project management and security certifications. Training includes courses in supply chain operations, logistics, enterprise systems, and more. Students can expand their SCM knowledge through membership in the university's chapter of APICS and build relationships with industry leaders through internships, networking opportunities, and business partnerships.
“I’d recommend this major to someone because of the opportunities this university offers with clubs, projects, and also the opportunities it offers after graduation,” says John Evangelist, a senior supply chain management major.
Among a few of the unique features of the BU program noted by Study.com were the job fairs and alumni conference hosted each fall at the school, students having access to software used by corporations with well-established supply chains and the school paying for SCM students' certification fees.
Also part of the BU program is the Nicholas J. Giuffre Center for Supply Chain Management which provides new resources, relationships, and opportunities for students in the Zeigler College of Business who are interested in supply chain management and information technology. The Giuffre Center for Supply Chain Management provides students and executives with superior leadership training and education in supply chain management through innovative teaching; experiential learning; industry collaboration and talent development.
Stolz says, “There are an unlimited amount of benefits for my future career in this major. Any job in the business world there is room to grow. With supply chain management being so broad, you can get into many different parts of supply chain and see which you’d like best.”
  — Annie Pitts, communication studies major

$2 million in scholarships allocated for first-generation students
BLOOMSBURG – Bloomsburg University and the Bloomsburg University Foundation (BUF) announces that the BUF Board has voted to commit $2 million in scholarships as a need-based award to first-generation college students from Pennsylvania.
The university will award the scholarships starting immediately for first-time students who enroll at BU for the fall 2021 semester. The initial award of $500,000 per year will become an annual renewable scholarship for students in the Class of 2025 who maintain successful academic standing.
"We are so thankful to the BUF Board and our donors for committing to provide such much-needed scholarships," said BU President Bashar W. Hanna. "They are leading our Husky Pack by example, and I can't thank them enough for the work they've done to make this happen."
BU's commitment to making a four-year degree more attainable for first-generation students was recently recognized when the university was named a First-gen Forward Institution by The Center for First-generation Student Success, an initiative of NASPA (Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education) and The Suder Foundation. The First-gen Forward designation recognizes higher education institutions that have demonstrated a commitment to improving experiences and advancing first-generation college students' outcomes.
"One of the biggest challenges for current and incoming students is the harsh reality that they may have to postpone their education due to financial obstacles, especially during these uncertain times," said BUF Board President Drew Hostetter. "That's what we're here for, to help support students and advance the success of this university. Right now, this is the best way for us to do that."
To qualify for the scholarships, recipients must be first-generation, full-time students. They must also be Pennsylvania residents with demonstrated financial need or meeting the criteria to receive Pell Grant assistance.
"This effort by our Foundation is going to make all the difference for many students enrolling this fall," said BU Vice President for Student Success and Enrollment Services Tom Fletcher. "What's so important is the renewable component, which shows prospective students that the BU community is here to provide the back-up they need to not only help them enroll but also to stay on track for timely completion of their degrees."
