The sculptor François Rude created the sculpture of the Baptism of Christ which is one of this artist's most famous works after his well know "Volunteers Leaving" or “La Marseillaise”, on the Arc de Triomph. This baptism work was commissioned in 1835 and placed in the Church of the Madeleine in 1843. The sculptor made some modification to the gesture of the figure of John, because his arm may have been hiding Christ's face. There is a drawing of the original idea for the composition that shows this. The artist references and found inspirations from the Italian Renaissance in artist’s works like Andrea Sansovino's baptistry figures in Florence. There are a number of beautiful figures of angels throughout the Madeleine church; his kneeling angel is a beautiful addition. This has always been a favorite of mine in Paris. . . . #paris #madeleinechurch #francoisrude #parisjetaime #parislife #parisart #parismonamour #parismaville #parislove #pariscity #villedeparis #iloveparis #parisfind (at Église de la Madeleine) https://www.instagram.com/p/CXZARK7t62P/?utm_medium=tumblr

Looking up at the #face of Marshal Ney. He had fought along side Napoleon who called him “the bravest of the braves.” The statue by artist #FrancoisRude located on Avenue de l’Observatoire in #Paris. This is roughly on the spot where Marshal Ney was executed, today in front of Closerie des Lilas. In "A Moveable Feast", Hemingway drank a toast to Ney at the Closerie des Lilas. He looked at Ney, “with his sword out and the shadows of the trees on the bronze” and thought of his friend Gertrude Stein, who lived nearby. Thinking of Ney’s loyalty to Napoleon, he vowed to “Do my best to serve her and see she gets justice for the good work she had done as long as I can, so help me God and Mike Ney. But the hell with her lost-generation talk and all the dirty, easy labels." (at Avenue de l'Observatoire)
