unexpected twist in the the evil boathouse project (link to previous post kvetching): a nearby park in a whiter, wealthier part of the neighbourhood is unexpectedly getting artificial turf laid down and the surrounding parents are freaking the FUCK out. I emailed them after the 3-hour committee board meeting like '🥺🥺🥺 they're trying to drown the ducklings in the river with artificial turf microplastic and PFAS and no one care about the poor people living in NYCHA and they're stomped on the community engagement here the same way they did at your park' and it's whipping them UP. the person I've been emailing thinks they are literally a Jedi knight, like 'Rohan calls for aid and Gondor will answer' type shit. all these straight, married parents of 2.5 kids are in A FRENZY and I am MILKING IT. I got added last minute to a private meeting with the borough and deputy first commissioners of Parks (one of the neighbourhood attendees was an actor in The Color Purple) and invited to a meeting with THE WALL STREET JOURNAL??? (can't make it because of work but they're gonna plug the evil boathouse project so whooooo). at the meeting with the commissioner I brought up the legacy of environmental racism in NY and specifically in the boathouse area where illegal dumping and power plants were practically de rigueur and the asthma rate in children of colour and then said 'and maybe that's why the city government thinks a project like this would be acceptable here when it would be a nonstarter in Midtown' and everyone sat up a little straighter. Evil Rachel, your ass is in danger girl.
