YOGA
Benefits of Yoga In our Life
Tumblr media
It’s time to roll out your yoga mat and discover the combination of physical and mental exercises that for thousands of years have hooked yoga practitioners around the globe. The beauty of yoga is that you don’t have to be a yogi or yogini to reap the benefits. Whether you are young or old, overweight or fit, yoga has the power to calm the mind and strengthen the body. Don’t be intimidated by yoga terminology, fancy yoga studios and complicated poses. Yoga is for everyone.
Tumblr media
1. Improves your flexibility
Improved flexibility is one of the first and most obvious benefits of yoga. During your first class, you probably won't be able to touch your toes, never mind do a backbend. But if you stick with it, you'll notice a gradual loosening, and eventually, seemingly impossible poses will become possible. You'll also probably notice that aches and pains start to disappear. That's no coincidence. Tight hips can strain the knee joint due to improper alignment of the thigh and shinbones. Tight hamstrings can lead to a flattening of the lumbar spine, which can cause back pain. And inflexibility in muscles and connective tissue, such as fascia and ligaments, can cause poor posture.
2. Builds muscle strength
Strong muscles do more than look good. They also protect us from conditions like arthritis and back pain, and help prevent falls in elderly people. And when you build strength through yoga, you balance it with flexibility. If you just went to the gym and lifted weights, you might build strength at the expense of flexibilit
3. Perfects your posture
Your head is like a bowling ball—big, round, and heavy. When it's balanced directly over an erect spine, it takes much less work for your neck and back muscles to support it. Move it several inches forward, however, and you start to strain those muscles. Hold up that forward-leaning bowling ball for eight or 12 hours a day and it's no wonder you're tired. And fatigue might not be your only problem. Poor posture can cause back, neck, and other muscle and joint problems. As you slump, your body may compensate by flattening the normal inward curves in your neck and lower back. This can cause pain and degenerative arthritis of the spine.
4. Prevents cartilage and joint breakdown
Each time you practice yoga, you take your joints through their full range of motion. This can help prevent degenerative arthritis or mitigate disability by "squeezing and soaking" areas of cartilage that normally aren't used. Joint cartilage is like a sponge; it receives fresh nutrients only when its fluid is squeezed out and a new supply can be soaked up. Without proper sustenance, neglected areas of cartilage can eventually wear out, exposing the underlying bone like worn-out brake pads.
5. Protects your spine
Spinal disks—the shock absorbers between the vertebrae that can herniate and compress nerves—crave movement. That's the only way they get their nutrients. If you've got a well-balanced asana practice with plenty of backbends, forward bends, and twists, you'll help keep your disks supple.
6. Betters your bone health
It's well documented that weight-bearing exercise strengthens bones and helps ward off osteoporosis. Many postures in yoga require that you lift your own weight. And some, like Downward- and Upward-Facing Dog, help strengthen the arm bones, which are particularly vulnerable to osteoporotic fractures. In an unpublished study conducted at California State University, Los Angeles, yoga practice increased bone density in the vertebrae. Yoga's ability to lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol (see Number 11) may help keep calcium in the bones.
7. Increases your blood flow
Yoga gets your blood flowing. More specifically, the relaxation exercises you learn in yoga can help your circulation, especially in your hands and feet. Yoga also gets more oxygen to your cells, which function better as a result. Twisting poses are thought to wring out venous blood from internal organs and allow oxygenated blood to flow in once the twist is released. Inverted poses, such as Headstand, Handstand, and Shoulderstand, encourage venous blood from the legs and pelvis to flow back to the heart, where it can be pumped to the lungs to be freshly oxygenated. This can help if you have swelling in your legs from heart or kidney problems. Yoga also boosts levels of hemoglobin and red blood cells, which carry oxygen to the tissues. And it thins the blood by making platelets less sticky and by cutting the level of clot-promoting proteins in the blood. This can lead to a decrease in heart attacks and strokes since blood clots are often the cause of these killers.
8. Drains your lymphs and boosts immunity
When you contract and stretch muscles, move organs around, and come in and out of yoga postures, you increase the drainage of lymph (a viscous fluid rich in immune cells). This helps the lymphatic system fight infection, destroy cancerous cells, and dispose of the toxic waste products of cellular functioning.
9. Ups your heart rate
When you regularly get your heart rate into the aerobic range, you lower your risk of heart attack and can relieve depression. While not all yoga is aerobic, if you do it vigorously or take flow or Ashtanga classes, it can boost your heart rate into the aerobic range. But even yoga exercises that don't get your heart rate up that high can improve cardiovascular conditioning. Studies have found that yoga practice lowers the resting heart rate, increases endurance, and can improve your maximum uptake of oxygen during exercise—all reflections of improved aerobic conditioning. One study found that subjects who were taught only pranayama could do more exercise with less oxygen.
10. Drops your blood pressure
If you've got high blood pressure, you might benefit from yoga. Two studies of people with hypertension, published in the British medical journal The Lancet, compared the effects of Savasana (Corpse Pose) with simply lying on a couch. After three months, Savasana was associated with a 26-point drop in systolic blood pressure (the top number) and a 15-point drop in diastolic blood pressure (the bottom number—and the higher the initial blood pressure, the bigger the drop.
11. Regulates your adrenal glands
Yoga lowers cortisol levels. If that doesn't sound like much, consider this. Normally, the adrenal glands secrete cortisol in response to an acute crisis, which temporarily boosts immune function. If your cortisol levels stay high even after the crisis, they can compromise the immune system. Temporary boosts of cortisol help with long-term memory, but chronically high levels undermine memory and may lead to permanent changes in the brain. Additionally, excessive cortisol has been linked with major depression, osteoporosis (it extracts calcium and other minerals from bones and interferes with the laying down of new bone), high blood pressure, and insulin resistance. In rats, high cortisol levels lead to what researchers call "food-seeking behavior" (the kind that drives you to eat when you're upset, angry, or stressed). The body takes those extra calories and distributes them as fat in the abdomen, contributing to weight gain and the risk of diabetes and heart attack.
12. Makes you happier
Feeling sad? Sit in Lotus. Better yet, rise up into a backbend or soar royally into King Dancer Pose. While it's not as simple as that, one study found that a consistent yoga practice improved depression and led to a significant increase in serotonin levels and a decrease in the levels of monoamine oxidase (an enzyme that breaks down neurotransmitters) and cortisol. At the University of Wisconsin, Richard Davidson, Ph.D., found that the left prefrontal cortex showed heightened activity in meditators, a finding that has been correlated with greater levels of happiness and better immune function. More dramatic left-sided activation was found in dedicated, long-term practitioners.
13. Founds a healthy lifestyle
Move more, eat less—that's the adage of many a dieter. Yoga can help on both fronts. A regular practice gets you moving and burns calories, and the spiritual and emotional dimensions of your practice may encourage you to address any eating and weight problems on a deeper level. Yoga may also inspire you to become a more conscious eater.
14. Lowers blood sugar
Yoga lowers blood sugar and LDL ("bad") cholesterol and boosts HDL ("good") cholesterol. In people with diabetes, yoga has been found to lower blood sugar in several ways: by lowering cortisol and adrenaline levels, encouraging weight loss, and improving sensitivity to the effects of insulin. Get your blood sugar levels down, and you decrease your risk of diabetic complications such as heart attack, kidney failure, and blindness.
15. Helps you focus
An important component of yoga is focusing on the present. Studies have found that regular yoga practice improves coordination, reaction time, memory, and even IQ scores. People who practice Transcendental Meditation demonstrate the ability to solve problems and acquire and recall information better—probably because they're less distracted by their thoughts, which can play over and over like an endless tape loop.
16. Relaxes your system
Yoga encourages you to relax, slow your breath, and focus on the present, shifting the balance from the sympathetic nervous system (or the fight-or-flight response) to the parasympathetic nervous system. The latter is calming and restorative; it lowers breathing and heart rates, decreases blood pressure, and increases blood flow to the intestines and reproductive organs—comprising what Herbert Benson, M.D., calls the relaxation response.
17. Improves your balance
Regularly practicing yoga increases proprioception (the ability to feel what your body is doing and where it is in space) and improves balance. People with bad posture or dysfunctional movement patterns usually have poor proprioception, which has been linked to knee problems and back pain. Better balance could mean fewer falls. For the elderly, this translates into more independence and delayed admission to a nursing home or never entering one at all. For the rest of us, postures like Tree Pose can make us feel less wobbly on and off the mat.
18. Maintains your nervous system
Some advanced yogis can control their bodies in extraordinary ways, many of which are mediated by the nervous system. Scientists have monitored yogis who could induce unusual heart rhythms, generate specific brain-wave patterns, and, using a meditation technique, raise the temperature of their hands by 15 degrees Fahrenheit. If they can use yoga to do that, perhaps you could learn to improve blood flow to your pelvis if you're trying to get pregnant or induce relaxation when you're having trouble falling asleep.
19. Releases tension in your limbs
Do you ever notice yourself holding the telephone or a steering wheel with a death grip or scrunching your face when staring at a computer screen? These unconscious habits can lead to chronic tension, muscle fatigue, and soreness in the wrists, arms, shoulders, neck, and face, which can increase stress and worsen your mood. As you practice yoga, you begin to notice where you hold tension: It might be in your tongue, your eyes, or the muscles of your face and neck. If you simply tune in, you may be able to release some tension in the tongue and eyes. With bigger muscles like the quadriceps, trapezius, and buttocks, it may take years of practice to learn how to relax them.
20. Helps you sleep deeper
Stimulation is good, but too much of it taxes the nervous system. Yoga can provide relief from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Restorative asana, yoga nidra (a form of guided relaxation), Savasana, pranayama, and meditation encourage pratyahara, a turning inward of the senses, which provides downtime for the nervous system. Another by-product of a regular yoga practice, studies suggest, is better sleep—which means you'll be less tired and stressed and less likely to have accidents.

What Does Kennel Cough Sound Like In a Shih Tzu?
What does kennel cough sound like in a Shih Tzu? A Shih Tzu who has kennel cough sounds like it has a persistent heart honking cough, a sudden dry hacking cough, sneezing, snorting, retching, gagging or vomiting. Watch our short video so see and hear what it sounds like.
youtube
Kennel Cough also called infectious trachea bronchi and is a very common respiratory infection in dogs. If your canine family never seems to be coughing or making a choking sound he may have kennel Cough, especially if recently he spent time at an animal shelter or boarding facility or dog park where he was exposed to a lot of other dogs.
Kennel Cough is a form of bronchitis and is similar to a chest cold in humans, and has a number of different causes. The most common of which is the bordetella bronchiseptica bacteria.
Many people think bordetella bronchiseptica bacteria alone causes Kennel Cough, but that’s technically not accurate. In fact, dogs who acquire Bordetella bacteria usually also have a virus such as Aabno virus, distemper, herpes or parrot influenza that makes them more vulnerable to infection.
How Long is Kennel Cough Contagious For?
Kennel Cough is very contagious and dogs can remain infectious for six to fourteen weeks after symptoms resolved. Dog to dog exposure occurs when an infected dog coughs or sneezes and a healthy dog inhales the aerosolized respiratory secretions.
The canine respiratory tract is coated with a protective lining of mucous, but if this lining is compromised an infection can take hold from the inhaled particles.
The result is inflammation of the larynx and trachea and it’s the inflammation that causes coughing. If the healthy dog’s respiratory tract is compromised by stressors such as travel, being housed, in a crowded environment, cold temperatures, environmental pollutants or infectious viruses that could be floating around then bordetella bronchiseptica bacteria
This bacterial defect the chief bacterial agents in kennel cough can enter the respiratory tract.
Bordetella bronchiseptica bacteria are usually accompanied by at least one other infectious agent, usually a virus, so kennel cough is actually multiple infections occurring at once and not just a single infection. This is one of the reasons that the vaccine is oftentimes not effective.
A small percent of cases kennel cough can progress to pneumonia requiring antibiotics in heart disease some type of treatment is needed to reduce the size of the heart and reduce the fluid in the airways.
Humidifier adding humidity to the air will calm and irritated airway, you can put on a humidifier in your pets room or put your pet in the bathroom and turn on the shower.
Remove the dog collar off any irritated airway will benefit from having less pressure put on it. Remove your dog’s collar and use a harness for restraint, avoid putting any pressure on your dog’s throat especially in chronic coughing cases such as in tracheal collapse herbal.
Kennel Cough Symptoms
There’s a number of different herbs that can help with coughing dogs. Stimulating the immune system can speed recovery due to herbs, I like echinacea and goldenseal and they both have antiviral and antibacterial properties.
Tinks are doshas are one drop or pound of bodyweight, twice daily. Licorice root is an effective cost suppressant but it’s something you don’t want to use any longer than five days and don’t use it long-term or cautiously.
Especially if there’s underlying liver kidney or heart disease the licorice root takes your dose is one drop per pound of body weight twice daily dandelion it’s a wonderful overlooked herb to be beneficial for a number of things including fluid and coughing in the Airways the leaves act as a diuretic helping to remove the excess.
Where Does Your Shih Tzu Get Kennel Cough From?
Most cases of kennel Cough occur in areas where dogs are super crowded with adequate ventilation and lots of warm air and a stressed immune system.
A dog good examples of these are boarding kennels, grooming shops and shelters. The universal symptom of bordetella infection is a persistent heart honking cough, a sudden dry hacking cough, sneezing, snorting, retching, gagging or vomiting.
In fact coughing to the point that dogs vomit in response to very light pressure to the trachea, or spasmodic cough when a dog is excited or exercising, are all really common symptoms of kennel cough.
If your dog has a totally healthy cough and then instantly has the spasmodic coughing, you need to be thinking about Kennel Cough. Your dog may also cough up foaming white phlegm or nasal or ocular secretions.
Occasionally there will be other signs of illness such as a runny nose, sneezing, depression, maybe a mild fever. Just like humans that have cold symptoms the duration of infection can be incredibly variable between dogs.
Kennel cough rarely causes appetite loss or lethargy ,so if your dog is showing these symptoms as well, there could be something else going on.
Can Dogs Die From Kennel Cough?
Symptoms usually occur 2 to 14 days after exposure and mild cases of kennel cough. Dogs usually continue to eat and they remain alert. When the condition is more serious there can be lethargy, loss of appetite, and the cold can actually migrate into life-threatening pneumonia.
Just like humans that have colds most of the time it doesn’t require hospitalization, but occasionally things colds can morph into other things like pneumonia.
And while most colds don’t require any type of hospitalization sometimes the infection progresses to a point where that is required. Most of the time severe cases of kennel cough primarily occurred Immunol-compromised dogs are in very young puppies.
Diagnosis of Kennel Cough
Diagnosis of kennel cough include taking a history of the symptoms of the dog in terms of what he’s physically experiencing but also any history of time spent at a boarding kennel, doggy daycare or other facility where there’s lots of dogs.
Bacterial cultures, viral isolation and blood work may be performed to identify the specific pathogens that’s causing the exact type of kennel cough. if the dog has symptoms that are really profound, like requiring hospitalization, which is actually quite rare.
Sometimes x-rays are done to check for pneumonia or bronchitis. kennel cough symptoms usually lasts between 10 and 20 days and can sometimes recur if there’s periods of stress.
most cases resolve on their own without any medical intervention so I don’t automatically recommend that you have to zip off to the veterinarian, especially for unnecessary antibiotics because antibiotics don’t address the viral component of this infection.
I always prefer to let the dog’s body heal itself naturally, during the acute phase of the illness I strongly recommend using a harness to prevent your dog’s collar from aggravating the situation, especially if they tend to pull a lot on their leash when they walk.
If your dog is coughing where he’s gagging and then seemingly he’s retching something up such as cuffing up a hairball, but that’s more typical of tracheal collapse. If the coughing is more prolonged similar to that but even more forceful that going throughout the day and it happened and started all of a sudden then we’re we’re dealing with something like kennel cough.
Where as in if it’s more of a wet sounding cough and it happens when your dog lays down, or at night and in the morning that’s much more common with the cough that we see in heart disease,
You can also try humidifying the air. I personally add a few drops of pure lavender oil to help soothe the dog’s throat, and also with humidification you can also help decrease coughing spells.
Complete recovery from kennel cough can usually take up to three weeks in healthy dogs and twice as long in older patients, or those with underlying immunosuppressive conditions.
Puppies can also take a little bit longer to recover because their immune systems are not yet fully developed.
Since a serious episode of kennel cough can result in pneumonia, if your dog doesn’t start to improve on her own within about a week, or if the coughing becomes progressively worse, or if your dog sparks the fever, or stops eating those are all really important reasons to make an appointment with your veterinarian.
I also recommend seeing a veterinarian if you have a puppy with symptoms that go beyond typical symptoms of kennel cough. For example, if you see a change in breathing pattern, if your puppy has difficulty breathing, if there’s a loss of appetite or markedly diminished energy level are all reasons to visit your vet.
What Can I Give My Shih Tzu For A Cough?
There are some awesome natural remedies that I use for many many years to speed a dog to recover from kennel cough and reduce the severity of symptoms, including a special brand of echinacea.
You can buy at any human health food store called esperan tox, I also add in Manuka honey. Manuka comes from the tea tree plant, you can buy that at the health food store as well. I use raw garlic as an herb called olive leaf.
Slippery elm can be very beneficial at soothing the throat and I actually used throat code tea which is a brand of human tea which contains licorice which is also great for sore throats.
Added vitamin C can help boost your dog’s immune system and diffusing the essential oils of eucalyptus, lavender and tea tree. You can diffuse those oils that can also help shorten the duration of infection.
Homeopathic kennel cough nodes can also be very beneficial but they’re buying prescription only so you’ll need to work with your integrative veterinarian to secure those.
Many veterinarians recommend Bordetella vaccines, either by injection or by intranasal delivery. Many boarding kennels, doggie day care facilities, groomers and other similar businesses require that dogs be vaccinated for kennel cough.
The reason behind this requirement is to remove liability from those businesses, it bounces liability away from those businesses. the truth is, immunologist Dr. Ron schultz states that Bordetella is an unvaccinated disease and that vaccines are generally ineffective and will not prevent your dog from getting kennel cough.
The infection of course is caused by a wide variety of bacterial and viral agents, so no single vaccine is going to provide protection from all of those sources, nor will the vaccine treat an active infection.
In addition whatever protection the vaccine might be offering wears off very quickly, usually in less than a year. This means your pet will need to be revaccinated every six months.
If you are patronizing businesses that demand this vaccine, on the rare occasion where I must provide a Bordetella vaccine for a doctor travel or to be boarded I always use the nose drop variety. It’s much less toxic, it doesn’t contain the strong edge events that the injectable version has and it has few if any side effects.
Remember your dog can still acquire kennel cough infection, even if she’s been vaccinated.
Related Questions
Is Kennel Cough Contagious To Humans?
Kennel Cough is a respiratory infection that can be transmitted very easily from dog to dog but not from dog to humans. Humans can carry the virus but cannot get a cough from the virus
Can Humans Pass Kennel Cough From Dog To Dog?
The simple answer is yes because kennel cough can be transmitted from a human to another dog from their hands or face, let me explain. The only way a dog can transfer kennel cough to a human is by coughing or sneezing around a human.
he droplets can attach to the human skin and then be transferred to another dog very easily. This is why you should always wash your hands after handling a dog.
Can My Dog Still Get Kennel Cough if Vaccinated?
According to the American Kennel Club KC Bordetella vaccine is just one of the infections that can cause kennel cough so having your dog vaccinated for Bordetella vaccine doesn’t mean your dog won’t catch kennel cough from one of the other viruses like para-influenza virus.

Brittany Boolos (BSN 15) was in the hospital for two months, unable to talk, walk or feed herself. Decades later, she turned that situation into a defining moment.
“I was born at 27 weeks … three months early,” Boolos says. “I spent two months in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. My passion for neonatal nursing was rooted in that. I tried to give every (career) a fair shot, but I wanted to give back for the care I got.”
The care Boolos received as a newborn helped give her a start with very few of the complications that premature babies typically encounter. Now as a registered nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Wiser Hospital for Women and Infants at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Boolos can name those common preemie complications from both work experience and her education foundation.

Preemies often have a low birth weight, and many suffer respiratory problems due to underdeveloped lungs. Sometimes they struggle with feeding issues. To help both preemies and full-term babies in a NICU, daily teamwork takes place at facilities throughout the country. Doctors, registered nurses, nurse practitioners, residents and a host of other hospital staff members must come up with care plans.
Birth of Neonatology
That big team is a far cry from the years when NICUs were in their infancy. Until the mid-to-late ’70s, an established blueprint for specific preemie care did not exist. The full development of neonatology as a specialty was still years away.
Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston was the rst hospital to treat pediatric respiratory failure with home mechanical ventilation. That development enabled at-home treatment instead of prolonged hospital care. The beginning of neonatology service followed.
“Back then is not that far back,” says Dr. Michael Speer, a neonatologist at Texas Children’s Hospital and a professor of pediatrics and medical ethics at Baylor College of Medicine. “The modern neonatology program was not established until about 1973. We didn’t have a ventilator for babies with lung disease until 1972. If a baby had lung disease, we had to use an incubator, and we didn’t have a ventilator to breathe for the baby.”
Some high-profile cases highlighted preemie health care needs, which contributed to care advances on a large scale. President John F. Kennedy’s son Patrick, who had been born premature, died in August 1963, just a few months before his father was assassinated. Patrick’s death put a spotlight on respiratory distress syndrome and other conditions common among premature babies. That spectrum includes babies born many weeks early and those who are nearly carried full term.
“The death of JFK’s baby Patrick … that baby was only about five weeks premature,” says Annie Rohan, an assistant professor and director of pediatric research at Stony Brook University’s School of Nursing in Stony Brook, New York. “There wasn’t a specialty of neonatology at that time. We learned that the use of oxygen is not always a good thing. (Musician) Stevie Wonder was exposed to too much oxygen.”
As funding for research and development increased, doctors gradually gained ground in the effort to improve preemie outcomes. The late Dr. Mary Ellen Avery’s pioneering research found that preemies often struggled with breathing due to lacking a lung protein called surfactant. Being able to supply that artificially in a NICU setting became a huge step forward. Other vital tools came into play as facilities were able to devote additional resources to address the nutritional needs of preemies.
“We had no formulas on hand in the early ’70s designed for premature babies,” Speer says. “We had no breast milk banking. We had primitive forms of nutrition [programs]. The mid-’70s was a hotbed of innovation and acquisition of knowledge.”
Whole New World
Boolos now works as a registered nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Wiser Hospital for Women and Infants at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
While doctors and nurses were making progress, another group still had plenty of catching up to do to become familiar with a typical NICU setting: the parents who were anxiously waiting to hear good news about their respective sons and daughters. Boolos has experienced the environment as a patient and as a nurse. She knows the visual aspects and the sounds of the NICU can be jarring for many new parents.
“One of the big things for me is to help the parents,” Boolos says. “For a lot of them, this is their first child. It can be very scary for them. There are a lot of cords and alarms in the NICU. Then teaching them how to care for a preemie — everything is so different.”
Boolos says her own parents, Todd and Tammy, were in that sort of situation when she was born in Vicksburg. The absence of a local NICU meant that 2-pound, 7-ounce Brittany had to be transferred to Methodist Medical Center in Jackson (now Merit Health Central).
“I always ask my parents questions about that NICU,” Boolos says. “My parents had hardly known about the NICU. Every baby is different. Babies of the same gestational age can have two totally different journeys.”
Prior cases and pattern recognition give doctors tools to recognize the illness process and the rigid science behind it. Sometimes the journey does not end as every patient and parent wants. Often, complications occur, and short-or long-term mental or physical impairments are possibilities.
“We have some babies who have medical conditions that we can address but not cure,” Speer says. “We sometimes are not able to do wondrous things.”
Sometimes the outcome is death.
“It is very gratifying to have the medical tools that we have,” Speer says. “But just because we can do something does not mean that we always should do something. Sometimes the best medicine is to say we cannot do anything for the baby, and we have to allow the baby to die with dignity and without suffering.”
Boolos witnesses many of the ups and downs experienced by babies and parents. Her reward often comes from seeing a baby that “you don’t think will make it through the night” hang in there and move closer to survival. When a patient is able to do things like switch to bottle feeding or start wearing clothes, those moments may not seem like a big deal on the surface. However, they are major milestones for preemies.
“It’s all part of it when you work in the NICU,” Boolos says. “It’s hard to see them fight for their lives. When you see their parents, it’s one of the hardest things.”
Answering the Call
Boolos witnesses many of the ups and downs experienced by babies and parents. Her reward o en comes from unexpected improvements in her patients. Seemingly minor advancements such as switching to bottle feeding are major milestones for preemies.
It is difficult logistically for organizations such as the National Association of Neonatal Nurses to track an exact figure representing the number of preemies who grow up to become medical professionals who work in a NICU. Rohan at Stony Brook estimates hundreds if not thousands of people have made that transition from being a patient to becoming a care provider.
“People have choices when they get out of a general nursing program,” Rohan says. “If you have emotional connections to that environment … preemies who have listened to stories about the NICU go into it.”
Once that decision is made, the process of getting accustomed to the ins and outs of a NICU begins. Students who are exposed to the new environment face linguistic challenges.
“There is a lot of new language at the NICU, and getting around the language is tricky,” Rohan says. “Sometimes younger students could be intimidated by the skills of a neonatal nurse practitioner, and they are challenged by the conversations. Sometimes the news is not interpreted by a family the way you want it to be.”
Preemies make up a fairly large portion of a NICU patient population, but many other full-term babies also are there who are dealing with setbacks such as infections or kidney issues. Many of those babies will have a few days or maybe a week on antibiotics and a relatively short-term hospital stay before heading home.
For those parents of preemies who face a longer path, they can find many examples of success, stretching from New York to Jackson to Houston. Rohan has some advice for them.
“Try to take your fear and sadness that this wasn’t the original plan, and put it on the back burner,” she says. “Try to hear what the care providers are telling you. There are a lot of resources in the NICU. Embrace those resources. Don’t be afraid to ask the same question to two different people. Sometimes an issue will be unclear. Be part of the care team for your infant.”
Video monitoring of preemies is a way to supplement cell phone calls and verbal communication.
“We don’t have the ability to transmit bedside monitoring to parents, but we can set up a TV monitor and Skype,” Speer says. “There is not the technology to transmit minute to minute, so we are still dependent on cell technology if parents can’t be at the hospital.”
The tense moments are not only part of the parents’ routine.
“When I started nursing school, I had no idea what I was getting into,” Boolos says. “I never thought about how attached you can get to a patient. When you realize how fragile these babies are, it’s a lot of emotional investment. I catch myself thinking about patients, and sometimes it’s hard to leave work at work.”
Boolos always sort of knew that she wanted to do something in the medical field, and the NICU allows her to experience a wide variety of cases.
“The NICU is a whole di erent world from the rest of the floors,” she says. “Most of what people know about hospital settings is dealing with other adults. We take care of very small preemies from 23 weeks up to older babies with chronic conditions.”
As treatment tools have improved, so have the odds of a good outcome for those smaller babies.
“We have technology that allows smaller and smaller babies to survive, go home and become contributing members of society,” Speer says. “Unless we have a major malformation or major catastrophic illness, more than 90 percent of babies should be very normal at 1,000 grams and 27 to 28 weeks of gestation. If you get down to 23, 24 or 25 weeks, a significant portion of those babies will not survive, or the survivors will have major disabilities in learning, vision or hearing that may last their entire lives.”
Boolos is in a unique position to keep the lines of communication open with parents who are anxious and looking for progress.
“If it’s appropriate, I tell them about my journey to give them hope.”

There was a time when were told to eat a lot of carbs, now the trend is to eat a low carbs diet. There was a time when egg was shunned as a food that gives you high cholesterol. Now you are encouraged to eat eggs because apparently egg doesn’t have bad cholesterol. New research is always changing our perception about food. The diet trends are also changing also changing all the time. You need to make sure that the dietary guidelines you are following are in line with what nutritionists say, and not just a fad diet. A classic example of this is the gluten diet. Now, gluten diet is only recommended for people with the celiac disease. But, a lot of people have jumped on the bandwagon. Going gluten-free when you don’t need to can have health repercussions like heart diseases and diabetes for you. We have compiled a list of seemingly bad health habits.
Bad Health Habits
Alternative Natural Sugars
As we all know by now, sugar consumption is harmful to your overall well being. But, that doesn’t make alternative sweeteners like agave any better. In fact, they are just as bad. A large number of patients think that alternative sweeteners are more advantageous than sugar since they are apparently natural. Agave, nectar, and maple syrup still contain calories. Agave, for instance, contains marginally more calories per teaspoon, 21, than sugar!” Studies have found that the levels of fructose in agave, nectar, and other “characteristic” sweeteners are no more secure for your wellbeing. Whatever sweetener you pick, the American Heart Association suggests close to six teaspoons of sugar for every day for ladies and nine for men.

Avoiding Dairy
Another bad health habit is quitting dairy. The latest health trend is to ditch the dairy. The theory is that you do not need to drink milk past infancy. The evidence presented is that 65 percent of the world population is lactose intolerant. While it is true that humans are the only animals who drink milk after reaching adulthood too, we have evolved genetically to adapt to milk. Milk is vital for your health. Dairy has important nutrients like calcium, whey protein, and conjugated linoleic acid. Some old research has reported that low-fat dairy can help lower blood pressure. The new research says that full-fat dairy has this capability too. A recent research has discovered that eating full-fat dairy make you gain less weight, maybe because it keeps you full for longer. Dairy can even help reduce the risk of heart diseases and diabetes. Milk has calcium which is vital for healthy bones and teeth. It also helps to maintain bone mass. It also has protein which acts as a source of energy for your body. It also helps repair muscle tissues. Milk also helps potassium which helps regulate blood pressure. It also has phosphorous which is required for strong bones and generating energy. Milk is often fortified with vitamin D. A lot of people are deficient in vitamin D. Drinking milk can complete your daily vitamin D requirements too. Milk also has vitamin B 12 which helps red blood cells and nerve tissue. It also has vitamin A, which is great for skin and vision. It also has B 2 which helps convert food into energy. Milk is also a good source of niacin which helps metabolize sugar and fatty acids. In short, milk has a lot of wonderful benefits. You will miss out if you ditch milk. Even as little as one glass of milk can be very healthy for you. The nutrients found in milk contribute to your overall health and wellness. If you drink milk after exercise, it will help you gain muscles. Milk deficiency can lead to anemia and osteoporosis. You can add fruits like bananas and mangoes to milk to make a healthy smoothie. Unless you really are lactose intolerant, do not ditch dairy just because a person who isn’t even qualified to give you such advice said so.

Low Sodium
If you’ve ever suffered from high blood pressure, chances are you were told to limit or stop consuming sodium. A new research from Boston University which followed 2,600 people for a period of16 years has found that a low-sodium diet does not really lower blood pressure. So, maybe salt is not the bad guy. A little salt should be a part of healthy diet. The research also discovered that people with the lowest consumption of sodium (and those with the highest) were at a greater risk for heart disease than the people who consumed salt in a moderate amount. This does not imply that you should go overboard with the consumption of processed foods that are high in sodium.  Instead of going crazy with processed foods that are full of sodium, add more whole foods in your diet. Whole foods are great for heart health. Sodium is a very important electrolyte and it is a vital ion in the extracellular fluid (ECF). Sodium is required for muscle contraction and enzyme operations. It is also required for osmoregulation and fluid maintenance in the body. Sodium also improves heart health, nervous system and the absorption of glucose. Sodium is also needed for blood regulation. The absence of sodium can impair bodily functions. As an electrolyte, sodium regulates the bodily fluids. It also transmits electrical impulses. Heat has no effect on sodium. People who have kidney problems or edema should limit their intake of sodium. To sum it up, sodium is an important component of the human diet. It regulates cellular activity and also the nervous system function. The recommended daily intake of sodium is 2400mg per day. A sodium deficiency can lead to health problems. Going low sodium is a bad health habit in fact.

Not Consuming Fat
Just like dairy, fat is not a bad thing. The debate is still on about saturated fats, but other fats are good for you when consumed in moderation. Plant-based fats like monounsaturated fats which are found in foods such as avocado and almonds and omega-3 fatty acids that are found in fish have many health benefits. These fats may help calm down inflammation, improve blood lipid levels, and might even help maintain a lower body weight. A lot of processed foods with labels claiming to have reduced fat actually have a lot of sugar and additives. This makes them very unhealthy. Do not be afraid of fats! You can eat good fats in moderation. Good fats come from animals, fishes, and plants. Avocado, nuts, olives, and nuts are good sources of fat. They have a high proportion of monosaturated fats and are high in omega 3s. Our ancestors had a diet consisted of 75 percent fat, 20 percent protein and 5 percent carbs compared to our diet of  60 percent carbs, 20 percent protein and 20 percent fat. Some studies have shown that obesity epidemic, which has nearly doubled in the last fifty years, is not because we eat too much fat but because we eat a lot of carbs and sugar. Brain tissue is made up of 60 percent fat. A diet that is low in fat will affect your brain functions. Vital vitamins like A, D, and E are not water soluble. To get transported around the body, they need fat. They are very important for our brain and overall health. Your lungs are covered with a substance made entirely of saturated fat. Premature infants who are lack this substance are usually given “surfactant” to ensure their lungs are working properly. Your lungs will be compromised if there is not enough saturated fat. Your lungs can be compromised without a sufficient amount of good fats The breakdown of the fatty layer can cause health problems. Saturated fats present in butter and coconut oil are great for immune health.  The loss of enough saturated fatty acids in the white blood cells can mess with their ability to identify and destroy bacteria, viruses, and fungi. The cellular membrane is largely made up of fats. Your skin is made up of many cells. Without the proper intake of fat, your skin can become dry and look chapped, which can make it easier for infections to enter our body.

Cholesterol In Food
Being afraid of egg yolks is also one of the bad health habits you need to get rid of. If you think you are healthy because you eat egg whites, think again. Egg yolks are high in dietary cholesterol, which can be healthy. People thought that dietary cholesterol affected blood cholesterol levels and that cholesterol-rich foods like eggs should be avoided. We now know that dietary cholesterol has a very little effect on blood cholesterol levels. Blood cholesterol isn’t so simple. There is good cholesterol which helps heart health. Then there is bad cholesterol. Egg yolks are full of vitamin E and carotenoids.

So-Called Healthy Processed Foods
You might think diet products like salad dressings are healthy for you but they are not. Foods like these used to be popular but all they did was remove fats and add sugars. A lot of sugar in your diet is way more harmful than added fats for your health. People who consume a lot of sugar increase their chances of dying from heart diseases.  When you buy the so-called healthy foods, check the ingredients to ensure that fats have in fact not been replaced by sugar. Some healthy foods like energy bars are full of additives. Sometimes even prepackaged vegetarian or vegan foods can be harmful. Just because something is vegan doesn’t mean it is healthy. Food items like these can be very high in calories. Always read food labels before buying such foods.

Gluten Free When You Don’t Have Celiac Disease
Gluten, found in grains like wheat, grain, and rye, has gotten criticism of late, and a few people believe it’s more beneficial to abandon it. Be the inverse may be valid. Unless you are genuinely hypersensitive to gluten, there is no compelling reason to keep away from it. A review from Spain really demonstrated that going sans gluten prompted diminished gut microscopic organisms, which influences immune function. Another review from the University of Illinois likewise found that individuals who were without gluten had larger amounts of arsenic, presumably in light of the fact that they have a tendency to eat a great deal of rice. Likewise, some people avoid gluten abstains from food as an approach to reduce body weight, however, gluten-free food may actually make you gain weight. Choose whole grains if you go gluten free to ensure you are consuming enough fiber. Going gluten free when you do not need to isone of the bad health habits you need to get rid of.

Eating Whole Grains
When looking for whole grains, one mistake that people often make is not reading the labels properly. If a food is labeled whole grain or multi grain, there is a chance that it is not 100% whole grain. 100-percent whole grains can bring down your danger of stroke, coronary illness, and diabetes. Multi-grains can sometimes just be a blend of different grains, which can be refined and whole both. Do not be fooled by labels that say multi-grain. Read the whole ingredient list to make sure you are buying 100 percent whole grain.

Drinking Alternative Milk
There is nothing really wrong about alternative sources of milk, they won’t give you the supplements you believe you’re getting. Almond doesn’t have enough protein.—it contains just two grams of protein for every serving contrasted with eight grams in cow’s milk. In spite of the fact that you consider nuts high in protein, the milk is mostly water, so the supplements get lost. What’s more, be cautious in case you’re trading cow milk for infants—a review from France demonstrated this can bring about dietary inadequacies. The dairy business has even propelled a battle to avoid almond and other plant-based milks from being called milk so shoppers won’t believe they’re nutritiously comparable. If you still drink nuts milk, make sure they are unsweetened.

Thaks to self-proclaimed fitness experts, it is hard to know what is healthy and what is not these days. It is easy to get lured into the promises of fads like gluten free (for those who do not have the celiac disease). Whenever you read about a health trend and feel like adopting it, do a proper research on it. Find out if that particular trend/diet suits you. Do not blindly follow health trends because some of them are just bad habits. The best example is perhaps the gluten free diet. A lot of celebrities and fitness bloggers advocated gluten free diet, even for people who did not have the celiac disease. Research has now found that going gluten free if you don’t need to can cause health problems. Similarly, there is a lot of hype about nuts milk these days which is basically just nuts blended with water! If someone is lactose intolerant, it is understandable if they drink lactose milk. But if you are not, do not deprive your body of milk. Milk is one of the best sources of calcium. Avoid these bad health habits if you care about your health and well-being.
