Buy Munnar Teas Online in India | 1868 by Tata Tea
As part of his efforts to resolve a border dispute between the neighbouring state of Madras and the Kingdom of Travancore in 1877, British Resident John Daniel Munro paid a visit to Munnar.
Munro immediately leased the Kannan Devan hills in Munnar from the august Rohini Thirunal Kerala Varma Valiya Raja after determining that they would make excellent plantation property. Tea was first planted in the Munnar region in 1880 by a European planter by the name of A.H. Sharp, and it quickly became the most lucrative crop in the area.

Finlay Muir & Company acquired 137,000 acres of Munnar tea estates in the late 1890s, and to oversee them, it established the Kannan Devan Hills Produce Company. Tata Tea discontinued operations in Munnar in 2005 and transferred its tea business to the recently founded Kannan Devan Hills Plantations Company (KDHP), which is mostly owned by its plantation workers.
