Emu
We all know of the Emu War… and if you don’t I would highly recommend looking it up. Back when Australia was first being used as a place to send prisoners, some farmers were having a hard time settling down due to the population of Emus already there. So began the emu wars. Armed with a shitty truck and a couple of guns, a few men went out to demolish the Emus. And of course… the Emu won! With their tough hides and the bumpy terrain, they were easily able to stand up against their attackers and take gunshot wounds in stride. Soon, with more Australians coming to the side of the emu, they eventually gave up their battle and the Emu lived on in their habitat. Learn More!
Flame Bowerbird
Ah, the wonderful bowerbird. Creator of “bowers”, a structure made from sticks that is akin to an upside down archway. These guys are the ones who collect many objects, not the magpie! They decorate their bowerbird territory with trinkets that they will sometimes use as part of their dance. The flame bowerbird is also known for alternating the dilation of his pupils during courtship. Learn More!

A Flame Bowerbird inspired by Dancing with the Birds. Very cool movie. It took me SO LONG to make. Definitely the most work I've put into a piece in a long time. Why I chose to do all the painting on one layer I'll never know but I mostly like it. I don't love the back and upper tail coverts.

Kindlwing, the Branch Burning Bird Monstar, swoops in
Tumblr media
Description:
"Highly intelligent, they learned how to use sticks as crude tools to manipulate other objects. They store sticks in the thick scruff of their tail, which ignite as they pull them out quickly. Despite having well-developed wings, they choose not to fly unless necessary for travel."
Kindlwing's name is made out of KINDLING and WING. Kindling is the term used for a type of wood fuel used for starting a fire, usually small sticks, twigs, or branches. Kindlwing's primary design is based off of two birds: the cardinal;

This 10-inch long bird of the New Guinea rainforest comes by its name honestly, for it resembles a torchlight. Its head down to its neck plumes and shoulders is brilliant red-orange, cooling down to orange then bright flame yellow on its back and wings. The tail and wings are tipped with black. Like other bowerbirds, it builds a structure, or bower made out of sticks and decorates it with all kinds of bright and shiny objects such as stones, shells, bits of glass, and even lost coins and jewelry. The bowerbird’s eyes are also golden, and he can expand and contract his pupils during his courtship dance, which is crazy.

More Melerem Design, I haven't found a final Lvl 20 design for him that embraces all the ideas I want to incorporate but I have really enjoyed mixing and matching a lot of these.

Moa
The giant moa bird, a bird that lived on the island of New Zealand. They were the main food source for the Haast’s Eagle, a huge bird of prey. But, they are also a cryptid as well… even though they were extinct long before Europeans arrived, there have been many tales and “sightings” of this mysterious and large bird. It’s probable that the Moa bird went extinct within 100 years of contact with humans, and so too did the Haast’s Eagle go extinct when it’s main source of food died out. Learn More!

"oh grian's a parrot oh grian's X-bird oh the hermits are blah blah blah" shut up. They're all Bowerbirds. Grian's specially a flame Bowerbird. Guys, they BUILD THINGS. sometimes they can spend YEARS on their projects. Incredible build projects, range of appearances, they imitate different things to not only keep away predators but also impress each other (they can imitate CHILDREN! wood chopping! Dogs!), And they play hide and seek with each other!!! Oh my god.
EDIT: coming back to add that bowerbirds will literally break each other's bowers--basically for fun! (Ignoring the fact it's to sabotage chance of finding a mate cause I'm not bringing hermitshipping into this.) They just. Tear things apart or litter their "yards" like. Does this not fit perfectly for them???
