Making a new year post while it's still technically old year in my timezone because I am, simply put, sleepy.
2023 has been a year. In terms of things that I have actually accomplished this year, Runway Runway is definitely the most significant, the one I'm proudest of, and the one I'm most excited to bring into 2024. I know that the new year is largely an arbitrary distinction (I literally have to go to work tomorrow morning like any other day) but I find it helpful to allow myself to buy into the idea of it being some sort of fresh start on the condition I don't fool myself into thinking it makes the last year go away. 2023 was a pretty bad year for me in a lot of ways, and for some reason it's always December specifically that doesn't let me catch a break, but the saving grace of it is that tomorrow it won't be December anymore.
Obviously, do not expect a post tomorrow. Probably not next week either because the fifth is my birthday and if I know myself I'll be making a sincere attempt to enjoy it by any means necessary. But my current estimate is that on Monday the 15th I'll be releasing a British Airways post, and from there I will probably continue with weekly Monday installments until I've caught my breath a bit and can increase the frequency. I have quite a few airlines I've been excited to review for probably months now, and I don't see myself getting less excited about any of them. And hopefully, now that I'm no longer going to be flattened by the experience of working winter holidays in a store which gets the majority of its revenue from people buying gifts for their family, I'll have a lot more time to look at pictures of airplanes.
I want to sincerely thank everyone who has followed this blog, read my posts, liked them, reblogged them, replied to them, sent asks, requested airlines, submitted pictures, and in any way given me incentive to write a self-indulgent blog which makes me very happy. Happy new year, and I hope you'll stick around to see me get to 1% the age of Finnair.
The only extant airline turning 100 in 2024 is Tajik Air, by the way, so expect to see that one at some point.

The Joensuu-based daily Karjalainen writes that it is already evident that talks called for Friday by Prime Minister Petteri Orpo (NCP) bringing together key labour and employer organisations to discuss the future of Finland's labour market model will not settle disputes between the government and the trade union movement.
The discussions are intended to review a government move to ensure that future proposals by the National Conciliator's Office do not exceed the wage increases agreed to within the export sector.
Karjalainen notes that on Tuesday, Jarkko Eloranta, who heads the Confederation of Finnish Trade Unions (SAK), said his organisation will not enter into talks with the government on this alone, but rather that discussions must also include issues related to the right to political strikes and rules on local labour contracts.
Employment Minister Arto Satonen (NCP) immediately commented that Friday's negotiations would focus on the government's labour market model and that the government would not agree to the SAK's demand to bring other issues to the negotiating table.
The paper writes that further clashes seem inevitable, with new strikes looming in the wings.
On Monday, it was reported that if negotiations break down, SAK affiliates will organise up to four days of political strikes. On Tuesday, the SAK said that it would announce future industrial action on Wednesday.
Karjalainen adds that Danske Bank on Tuesday downgraded its already gloomy economic forecast for Finland this year. It is clear, writes the paper, that strikes will have a negative impact on the direction of the economy and employment.
Reviewing a Tuesday evening televised discussion on Yle, Iltalehti considered Employment Minister Satonen as being enthusiastic about the upcoming talks on the government's export-driven labour market model, but also aware that that issues such as earnings-related unemployment benefits and local agreements still needed to be worked out.
"If I understood what the SAK put forward today, it is not too far from the proposal on industrial peace that has been tabled in Parliament. As for local agreements, there is a round of consultations in progress, and on income-related unemployment benefits, there is a government proposal that has already made progress," said Satonen.
No confidence motion
Helsingin Sanomat is among the papers reporting that the opposition Social Democratic Party on Tuesday filed a motion of no confidence in Satonen.
According to SDP vice-chair Matias Mäkynen, Satonen has repeatedly given Parliament incorrect information about the terms of labour market legislation in Finland's peer countries, such as Sweden.
Satonen has said several times in public that in Sweden, political strikes may only last for a few hours. A top Swedish labour official has told HS that there is no such restriction.
"Satonen has presented false information to Parliament and later repeated this false statement instead of correcting it or apologising. Therefore, the Social Democratic parliamentary group considers that Minister Satonen is not worthy of Parliament's trust," Mäkynen said.
Prime Minister Orpo announced that Satonen has his full support.
Finnair done weighing passengers, for now
Hufvudstadsbladet writes that Finnair has wrapped up a project of voluntary weigh-ins of passengers and their hand luggage that began in early February.
Finnair announced the weigh-ins earlier this year, saying that it would be collecting data on the weight of passengers and hand luggage for a few weeks.
"The weigh-ins were carried out at the departure gates. There was a point near the gates where customers could step onto a scale with their hand luggage and belongings. The weigh-ins have been anonymous and customers have participated in them on a voluntary basis," Pauliina Palttala from Finnair's Communications Department explained to the paper.
Finnair has previously conducted similar data collection during the winter season of 2017 and the spring of 2018. Data on passenger and hand luggage weighs was collected not only for air traffic within Europe, but also Asia and North America.
The first round of the current project has now been completed and it went smoothly, according to Palttala.
"Customers were positive and happy to participate. So many customers wanted to take part that the data collection was completed early," she said.
The next round of voluntary weigh-in will be carried out in April-May as part of the shift from winter to summer flight schedules.
The airline is using the data calculate average loads.
"Airlines can either use their own data or values set by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency. Finnair uses its own data for the calculations," Palttala told Hufvudstadsbladet.
Q&A about scabies
Media outlets in Finland have recently reported a surge in scabies cases across the country, and Helsinki University Hospital (HUS) has said the capital region is in the midst of a scabies epidemic.
Helsingin Uutiset spoke with Chief Physician Sanna Isosomppi from the City of Helsinki's Epidemiologic operations unit, asking her what the current situation is in the capital.
"There are no precise statistics on the prevalence of scabies. However, 360 contacts in Helsinki had been registered in the THL statistical database by mid-February this year due to scabies. For the whole of 2023, the corresponding number was just over 4,000 contacts. There are no recent institutional outbreaks of scabies known. During the early part of the year, a few daycare centres detected several cases of scabies in the same group, and we advised treatment of the entire group," Isosomppi told the local daily.
How is scabies transmitted?
"Scabies usually requires repeated or otherwise close contact in order to be transmitted. Scabies is transmitted by skin-to-skin contact. It can also be transmitted through clothing and bedding, for example, between members of the same household or through other prolonged contact. It is very unlikely that scabies would be contracted through transient contact, such as by shaking hands."
Can you get a scabies in the fitting room when trying on clothes? What about on the bus or train? Or if you leave your jacket on a coat rack?
"In these situations, it is very unlikely that you will get scabies."
According to the city, outside the human body, the scabies mite dies within 48-72 hours. For home scabies cleaning, the city recommends washing clothes at 60 degrees Celsius or freezing them for 24 hours. What to do if you can't wash your clothes such hot water or don't have a big freezer?
"Alternatively, you can put your clothes in a plastic bag for seven days, air them outside for three days or, with extreme care for fire safety, heat them in a sauna at 60-80ºC for a few hours. Furniture, carpets and the like should be vacuumed," said Isosomppi.
Helsingin Uutiset notes that the City of Helsinki has issued online instructions for the self-treatment of scabies.

Saddle your reindeer and keep your eyes open for the northern lights: you're about to ride with Finnair USA in the finnair seat selection. This Helsinki-based airline does not theoretically hire Rudolph to guide its sleighs, better known as airplanes, but there is always plenty of awesomeness to go around in the Arctic Circle. First of all, it's the fifth oldest airline in the country, which means Santa Claus may have begun his career there. Second, the airlines are among the top airlines worldwide, so that you may take flights from Finnair in Asia, Europe and North America to more than 100 foreign locations without merely contemplating turbulence. Only shut your eyes and think of Finland as stunning. Oh, is that the Borealis aurora?
About Finnair Plus
With a plus in the tag, we're suckers for something, but this frequent-flyer package lives up to the hype. Even the Helsinki hipsters will be impressed; not only do the basic ranks have access to rewards such as virtual check-in facilities, special assistance lines, and priority protection lanes, but with Finnair business-class enhancements, mile incentives, and additional baggage allowances, the upper echelon of earners can also flex their standing. As if that's not enough, the curriculum only has a special tier for children aged 12 and 18 years of age: finnair booking Plus Junior. Finally, your daughter will use her mile balance to rate that she's been bugging you around for months with the Angry Birds mug. Let both of us rejoice.
For you, we'd switch glaciers
We metaphorically say that. Did you see the stuff up close? They're huge. Now, if anything could make a towering mound of ice turn, it would be the force of Flights.com's inexpensive flights, first-class fares, and bargain offers. To book your Finnair Airlines reservations, use our customized reviews and exclusive specials and you'll see what we're blabbering about. If we do not get Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, and Vixen to come along for the ride, just try not to be upset. Finland can be only a stone's throw from their home base, but they are booked months in advance for those reindeers. Blitzen is sending out his apology.

Weekly Review: March 6, 2021
Hope everyone has a great weekend so far!
In terms of points and travel, Amex added cell phone coverage this week to select premium cards, a Fly Armenia Airways 737 that has been mysteriously rerouted to Iran. Surinam Airways got rid of the new 777. Frontier Airlines narrowly avoided a catastrophic de-icing incident, an Air France, 777 was destroyed by Greenpeace and much more.
Here is a recap from this week on the blog:

12 best credit card deals March 2021
Every month I write a post with what I think is the best credit card deals, with a particular focus on the best travel credit cards.
It’s 2021 and there is a sense of hope for many of us. People will be vaccinated, and hopefully parts of the world will go back to normal (at least) sometime this year. This is a great reason to put your points-earning strategy in order so that you can plan your dream trip when the time is right.
While there are several excellent long-term credit card offers, the specifics of the top offers are constantly changing (be it the annual fee, minimum spend, or even the size of the welcome bonus).
Delta Pay With Miles: Everything You Need To Know
While Delta SkyMiles is not my preferred mileage currency, one of the things I like about SkyMiles is that the program has a higher “floor” value for miles than American and United.
This means you may be able to “cash out” SkyMiles for the cost of a ticket at a cheaper rate than AAdvantage and MileagePlus.
All of this is thanks to Delta’s “Pay with Miles” feature, with which you can redeem miles for the cost of a Delta purchase at the cost of one cent each. In this post I wanted to see how that works.
Yes, airline contracts of carriage are completely unfair
I can’t think of any other industry that has contracts with customers that are as one-sided as we see it in the aviation industry … but it’s been like that for a long time.

Helsingin Sanomat is among the papers reporting that the Finnish branch of Extinction Rebellion (known in Finnish as Elokapina) has announced that it will be holding a week of protests in Helsinki and Tampere starting Monday, 9 October.
According to the groups, the marches will disrupt traffic in both cities.
"The purpose of the slow-moving processions is to slow traffic to a near standstill. With these slow marches, demonstrators are demanding that the use of forests in Finland be restored to a sustainable level," Elokapina stated in a press release quoted by the paper.
The marches are part of an autumn campaign by Elokapina pushing for the prioritization of the natural environment and diversity, and the ending of state subsidies that are destructive to the environment.
Finnair suspends flights to Israel
Finland's national airline Finnair has cancelled its regularly scheduled flights between Helsinki and Tel Aviv for the period of 9-14 October, due to the conflict in the region, reports Ilta-Sanomat.
According to the paper, for the time being Finnair will not use Israeli airspace for any of its flights. The company added that it is closely monitoring the situation and following instructions from authorities.
Finnair also announced that passengers with reservations on this route between 15 and 31 October 2023 can make changes to their bookings, if they so wish, or cancel and request a refund.
Tackling street gangs
The Joensuu-based daily Karjalainen presented its readers on Monday morning with a review of some media comments by national officials on measures they suggest to deal with criminal activities by street gangs.
The paper notes that among the suggestions, Justice Minister Leena Meri (Finns) wants to use to address the problem is extending criminal liability to 14-year-olds.
In an interview with Iltalehti, Meri pointed out however that this change is not a part of the current government's programme, which means that moving forward would would require wider political support.
The change has come up for discussion as street gangs are known to try to recruit young people under the age of 15 to commit crimes because they cannot be prosecuted.
"Currently, arrest, imprisonment or travel bans cannot be imposed on anyone under the age of 15. The possibility of using coercive measures should be expanded," Meri told Iltalehti.
Karjalainen notes that the government is preparing several changes in legislation aimed at combating street gang crime. One change will bring stiffer sentences for crimes committed as a gang member. In addition, sentences for aggravated assault and carrying an illegal weapon are to be increased.
The paper also notes that Maria Ohisalo (Green), a former Minister of the Interior, told Helsingin Sanomat that the police did not tell decision-makers about their concerns related to street gangs until the middle of the government term in 2021.
Ohisalo said that she is ready to support many of the measures being pushed by the current government, such as tougher punishments, and that she believes they will easily be backed by a large majority in parliament.
Cabling the countryside
According to Maaseudun Tulevaisuus, there are still an estimated 1.4 million households in Finland without access to high-speed fibre optic cable services.
At the turn of last year, less than 60 percent of properties had fixed broadband access in South Savo, South Karelia, Kymenlaakso, North Karelia, Central Finland, South Ostrobothnia and Lapland.
An estimated one third of a 32 million euro grant from the EU to develop these services has still not been spent. The government target is to ensure a one-gigabit internet connection for all citizens in 2030.
The government has stipulated the level of the contributions that local authorities have to make to building broadband networks in areas where they are not commercially viable. Municipalities are divided into three groups, whose shares are either 8, 22 or 33 percent of the costs.
According to Elina Ussa, CEO of the IT sector interest group FiCom, this development now depends on municipal decision-makers and whether or not the required permits will finally be available from a "one-stop shop" as promised by the Orpo government.
"Permit processes now take too long. The country's 309 municipalities have very different practices, and the network is often built in the area of several municipalities. The various requirements for permits are a challenge, and shallow cable installation, for example, may be restricted in residential areas," Ussa pointed out.
Ussa also noted that choice is another issue slowing coverage.
"Broadband subsidies - which only apply to the fixed network - have made fibre connections available to a total of 130,000 households, but only a third have subscribed. You have to pay for the connection, even if the network was built and brought to the property for free. Not everyone wants to pay more if online services work in other ways," she told MT.
Slippery morning roads
Iltalehti writes that roads may be "deceptively slippery" after nighttime sleet in some places.
Sleet and slush has made driving potential hazardous in an area stretching along the northwestern coast.
Monday is starting out cloudy in most parts of the country, but will become sunnier during the day. The most persistent cloud cover is expected in Kainuu, North Karelia, and eastern Lapland.
There may be rain showers on the west coast, and some sleet in Ostrobothnia.

Flight Review: Finnair | Economy Class | Dublin - Helsinki | A319
New post: Flight Review: Finnair Economy Class Dublin - Helsinki A319
I can see the future.
I can see myself flying this route quite a few times in the next few years.
The Departure
Dublin Airport is a secret shame of mine being Irish. It’s just not the best airport in the world. Or Ireland. Far from it. Terminal 2 has tried to up DUB’s game but it all still comes back to the infrastructure of Terminal 1 and the whole airport. It’s just not the best. An express…
